I like listening to Dr John Pilsher. He seems levelheaded and up to date on current medical issues concerning WLS. Some of his videos seem to buck the system about things we thought to be true. Malabsorption with bypass for example is a myth according to him. What say you???

My story, a journey and an adventure. GP and GERD.
BabySpoons replied to KD in CT's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'd venture to say that gastric bypass surgery and hernia repair will not only resolve the GERD for you but also help with your breathing. I had both procedures back in April of this year. My doctor said 10% of my stomach was pushed up through my diaphragm. No wonder I couldn't breathe to do anything and had horrible acid reflux. I am so thankful for this surgery. It gave me my life back and hope repairing that hernia will free up your breathing along with curing the GERD like it did mine. Good luck. -

I had GERD and my surgeon said because of that I should at least consider bypass, although he'd do either surgery I wanted. Bypass usually improves if not outright cures GERD. My GERD completely went away for the first three years post-surgery. I have it again, although it's milder than it was before. I just take an over-the-counter antacid (like Rolaids) when it acts up, which is maybe a couple of times a week. no cautionary advice - I love my bypass and would do it again in a heartbeat. -
Multi Vita and Medic Alert bracelet
The Greater Fool replied to loras68's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'll pass on the Multi Vita question. I will say my surgeon wanted us getting our nutrition from food. If blood work revealed deficiencies, then use supplements to address those. Calcium and Iron were those he suggested prophylactically since they were common issues; On the medic alert: No, not everyone get's one. I would say those that do get them are in the minority. My surgeon didn't feel they were necessary, and on my own research I amazingly came to the same conclusion as my surgeon. Imagine that! Common medic alert items: NG Stomach tube: There are standard practices for NG stomach tubes none of which require gastric bypass folks to warn anyone. First, NG stomach tubes are used for feeding which would not be done when you are unconscious in an emergency, once it would come to this point they will know your history or be able to see if it would be an issue; Even if this weren't the case, folks are trained to stop NG tube insertion when the slightest resistance is encountered, so the only time it would be an issue is when someone is doing it wrong already, so warning them not to do it wrong won't help; No NSAIDS: Folks won't be forcing NSAIDs on us when we are unconscious; If we are encountering a cardiac situation they may want to do a low dose aspirin, to which you want to say yes to avert heart issues. Low dose for cardiac care won't harm our tummies, I take saving my heart over saving my tummy any day of the week; Many folks take low dose aspirin daily; Dumping on Sugars: Again, they're not in the habit of forcing sugars on us if we are unconscious; Also, if in the extremely unlikely event that forcing sugar on us would be lifesaving, I'll take non-life threatening dumping over dying any day. Heck, I'll be asleep so dumping won't be a big deal. BTW, I dump and I'm still not scared; On a more philosophical level for me, I didn't want this surgery to rule my life. I was building a new normal here and I don't need special labelling to establish my new normal. Again, this is a me thing and is meaningless to the rest of the world which is why I'm not labeling myself for the rest of the world. Such medic alert bracelet's are an invitation for people to ask why, and I don't want to explain why to anyone. Hope this helps, Good luck, Tek -
Hi guys. I had my bypass yesterday. The pain is tolerable and it is especially nice to have this abdominal binder on. Hope it’s not TMI but I have been having trouble urinating. They actually had to straight cath me last night because I was retaining too much urine. I am still retaining but urinating enough that they were okay with sending me home. So now I’m home and trying to stay hydrated. They told me sometimes this happens and the bladder is the last thing to wake up. Hope it really wakes up soon.

Hi everyone, I am considering gastric bypass surgery and have narrowed the surgeon selection to Dr Kevin Krause affiliated with Beaumont Royal Oak Michigan and Dr John Pilcher affiliated with Sage Bariatric in Texas. would really appreciate if those who have had their surgery done by either of these doctors provide input on their experience and if they would recommend the doctors and their teams. Working on making the best decision so looking forward to hearing from some of you.

My story, a journey and an adventure. GP and GERD.
KD in CT posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am ready for my journey, I view it as an adventure. While I have struggled with weight my whole life, I was mostly ok with my appearance, even though I ideally need to loose 80-100 lbs.. I have been active in life and successful in my endeavors. I've had a good life. Recently, the stress of life, finances and emotional challenges have taken their toll on my overall health and well being. Chronic GERD has caused GERD asthma and I've had two bad exacerbations since April. This has been very, very difficult. GERD causes the asthma, medications make GERD worse. A vicious cycle. I am retired and teach swimming lessons to young and old and it gives me so much pleasure to share this skill with kids of all ages. I now find the pool chemicals are triggering the asthma and it is limiting my time in the water. I'm doing everything my doctors recommend and still having trouble controlling the asthma and GERD. I've done research to determine if Gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair will help with Gerd and loosing weight and it seems promising. I have a 90 minute education session on Monday and my first appointment with the surgeon on June 16th. Lots of questions, but very happy I started this process. My husband is supportive and I've discussed with my daughter. Is there anyone out there with similar GERD related issues that were helped or have cautionary advice about gastric bypass. I would love to hear your story and challenges.- 5 replies

Hi Fiery! I’m brand new here, and I see you’re not posting these days. I hope you’re doing well, and I hope you're still using your tool… if not, I think here’s a good place to chat and vent. I’m completely terrified of my upcoming bypass surgery. I only have this next month to take off work and take care of myself. It sounds like you’re a busy, on the go kinda girl ( so am I, very much so) … I guess I’d like to know how you’re doing these days… the reality of it all.. I hope to hear from you!😀

sharonwg replied to Mari3997's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Mari - I had the bypass on 1st June (two days ago) and im now home. I had no gas pain at all and had no need for pain killers post surgery. There is another thread here on this site called 'June buddies'. Why not join us there - its for those who are having their surgery this month but anyone can post a comment really. I don't regret a thing - just glad the surgery is over 😘 -

Been Reading Nightmare complications ?
Wrenna replied to stevechavez505's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I was pretty unlucky with the nightmare complications. Two weeks after my bypass, I needed emergency surgery because internal adhesions caused a complete blockage. Two days after that surgery, I was getting my second emergency surgery for the same issue. They also decided to place a g-tube in the bypassed part of my stomach for drainage, and I had to have that for three months. Right after that, I would experience random attacks of intense pain and we finally, finally think we figured out why (sphincter of oddi dysfunction). That being said.... ...I would do it all over again in a heart beat. At no point did I have any regrets. Yes, it sucked having to get two "bonus" surgeries, but it was a minor blip in the road. The random pain episodes sucked, but now that we know the issue, there are things I can do to prevent it from happening. Compared to how life was before my bypass, I feel SO MUCH BETTER. My blood pressure is normal, my joints don't hurt constantly, my energy levels are through the roof, I run and kayak and hike regularly... and then there's the 'vanity' aspects too - every store carries my size, I love shopping for clothes because they look good on me now, I'm not hyper-aware of my size constantly... the list goes on. I really did not release how miserable I was being obese until I wasn't. It's surgery! I don't think it's right for everyone, and I think people should be aware of the potential for complications... but those complications are pretty rare, and it's still the gold standard for long term weight loss. -
No pre surgery diet 😳 Is this normal?.. or ok?
Mari3997 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All! I’m a 58 year old female . My bypass is scheduled this month, and I’m beyond petrified. I’ve cancelled my surgery 3 times in the past 15 years ( mostly because my mom always scared me out of doing it)… I’ve since lost her and I feel I can no longer carry all this weight. I have so much inflammation / pain everywhere in my body ( ie joints) … But my surgeon does not require weight loss beforehand or at least the liver shrinking diet pre-op ( and I planned on starting it this week on my own, but didn’t! ! I don’t trust myself to be able to do what it takes to be successful ! I don’t feel I have the support to go through with it ! I’m afraid of rerouting my digestive system! Of complications! The bariatric center in my area is “ going thru changes” ( doctors words) … there is no support group… But I have back pain and I need to go to work everyday! …. I have this small window of time to recover as I have help to cover for me . But I am SCARED! I change my mind all the time! ( I haven’t told the doctor just in case on that day I feel I can go through with it! I know! I know! It’s crazy and I’m driving MYSELF crazy! -
There’s another thread at the moment that may be helpful at the moment about the use of patches. Seems there are mixed reviews. I know many surgeons recommend them at first until you can easily swallow your meds but it may be a case of whether they work for you. Were your team concerned with your blood work? What did they advise? May be try taking oral vitamins & see if there is an improvement? What as your blood work like before surgery? Maybe you need to be taking more of certain vitamins. Out of curiosity which surgery did you have? Malabsorption can be a concern with bypass so you may be experiencing a combination of not absorbing all the nutrients from your food, your current low calorie intake & not being on a high enough vitamin dose. PS. Some vitamins are available in liquid or oral spray formulations if you struggle to swallow meds. I take vitamin D/K2 as a spray - I love it.

May 2023 surgeries
Y. Hightower replied to WVJess2Less's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Surgery done on May 31st and it went good. My doctor was pleased. I took a nausea pill before surgery and a patch was placed behind my ear for nausea. So no nausea for me!! I stayed overnight and walked every 2 hours. I am able to keep liquids down with no problem but I get full quickly. I had revision surgery distal bypass. I am sore but I take the liquid Tylenol for that. I'm not hungry, but I am sipping on Premier Protein clear and the milky Protein Premier. -
Vitamin Patches
BabySpoons replied to KristaDickens95's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine told me that he didn't care if I took Flintstone vitamins just take them. LOL The nutritionist winced when I told her what he said. She told me the patches don't absorb as well and has me taking chewables. But then I had gastric bypass. Sometimes it's hard for me to get those 4 horse pills down everyday. I may try the patches at some point. -
Just a small note to alert you all too - the lady in the room next to mine also had a bypass and does not have any pain either xx

My weight loss surgery story
summerseeker replied to cmoore09's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello and please do not feel like a failure. Lots of people on here have not lost the weight they imagined they would. Some people think that the sleeve or bypass will do all the work and that they need to do none of the hard work. Could you tell us a little more, we really need to know - What you weighed, what you are eating, what you have tried to do to get back on track, etc. It does sound like you need counselling, body dysmorphia is a wicked cruel syndrome. Please get the help you need -
Anyone get a sleeve that has existing Nutcracker Esophagus? Mine is not caused by reflux but I fear the operation would cause reflux and trigger more spasms. I have spasms that last about 6 hours at a time and feel like a heart attack. Would a bypass be a better option even though my BMI is only 38?

Nervous about gastric sleeve
LindsayT replied to Breezy_'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I pondered that question for months. I have GERD and didn't want to risk it getting worse, so I chose the bypass. Because I knew I didn't want a revision surgery, it was easy for me to make the choice once got past the idea of dumping syndrome. Each surgery comes with its list of pros and cons, it comes down to what you're willing to live with. -
Nervous about gastric sleeve
Spinoza replied to Breezy_'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had nasty reflux for years before my sleeve. I knew that it had always improved at times when I had lost significant amounts of weight so I gambled on that happening again if I had sleeve as opposed to bypass. So far that gamble has paid off. 🤞 -
Nervous about gastric sleeve
BabySpoons replied to Breezy_'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had bad acid reflux before surgery, so I opted for the gastric bypass. Little did I know I had a hiatal hernia and 10% of my stomach was pushed up through my diaphragm. So I guess I'll never know if the sleeve would have been OK for me after the hernia was repaired. I'm just happy I am reflux/heartburn free now. I have read many sleeve patients suffer with it so I can see your dilemma. Good luck! -
Hi guys. Well…,. I’ve had the bypass and have been out of theatre for a few hours now. No gas pain at all and I can now get up to use the bathroom without the nurse providing I take it a little slower (anaesthetic still a little present). I’m doing good guys - just now going to watch Netflix on my iPad. I’m also going to now brave taking tiny sips of fluid for the first time 😘🤗

Muscular Weakness after Bypass?
Mygirl0226 replied to brownp16's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi thanks for sharing your story Phil. I’m 39, had bypass in 2020 and in 2023 I have leg mobility issues, numbness, tingling in my lower body, nerve pain and none of this can be explained. I’m also baffled at what is going on. I took all my vitamins, checked my levels and then suddenly my ast/alt shot through the roof, my vitamin B6 was toxic level (over 2000), my legs stopped working and I went by ambulance to hospital. Besides my blood work, all imaging is fine. Did you ever get diagnosed with anything? It’s been 6 months of hell for me. I lost and maintained 70-80 lbs from surgery and I thought I was doing great until this happened. I never read anything like this and now they’re suspecting the same nutritional deficiency as the issue even though I didn’t feel sick before and my levels were good until this “attack”. I hope to get my strength back soon, I’m working so hard to get my legs back and I have no answers of why this happened. -
Cat lady - did you say you too are having a bypass?
