  1. My husband is taking me to Cancun for our Anniversary in November. By that time I will be 6 months out from my VGS surgery. Just wondering if anyone went on an all inclusive vacation after bariatric surgery and how did you handle being surrounded by so much food and alcohol? July 2019

I dont know if anyone else feels this way, but i am so damn nervous and OVERTHINKING stuff. Im still getting this surgery no matter what, but i dont know why i feel like im not going to be ready when i walk through those doors for surgery. I still have 17 more days but im like freaking out. I start my pre op diet on the 8th so i told my friends that July 5th is my last day to eat my last "bad" meal and to have some alcohol and then its time for all this VSG stuff! Im so excited but i have never had surgery in my life and i feel this isnt real. I hope im explaining this right lol. Someone HELPPPPP pleaseeee.

I just want a dang cigarette

Absolutely! It's about sharing our experiences with each other We know we're not alone in our WL journey. Also...our overall road to health. I'm really sorry about your mom and sister. Proud of you for breaking that cycle and making a change. I never had an issue with alcohol. I really don't drink often so it was never a thought really before or after surgery. I've had a drink on occasion, but it's usually just one. I never learned moderation with my food intake. I constantly indulged. Re-training your brain is so hard! We can do this and change our lives for the better in every way. I wish you the BEST of luck on your journey. It's not easy and everyone takes a different path. In the end, we CAN change our stories!! ❤️

I just want a dang cigarette

Thank you for sharing. I am sure you are relating to those that have the same issue with smoking. Personally, my mother smoked for over 50 years. She stopped at age 62 and died at 68 from cancer. I watched my big sister eat and stess herself to death. I am just trying to change my story. We really have little control over so many things. I am just trying to control the things I can. I drink alcohol and that has slowed down. I understand addiction. I just want to end the cycle of premature death on my family. It's indeed hard. Anther protein DRINK question.....

some people become lactose intolerant - at least temporarily (although sometimes permanently) after WLS, and some people can't tolerate sugar alcohols (the artificial sweeteners they put in a lot of those things). SO maybe one of those??

    Drinking

My wife gets drunk super fast and can drink as much as her "friends " can pour down her throat . She's now an alcoholic because of the surgery and after losing 160 pounds she's starting to gain weight because of the drinking .

    Fruit juice-really the enemy?

I am presurgery and can honestly attest to the fact that majority of my extra caloric intake is from fruit juice! I have never finished a can of soda in my entire life, I don't drink alcoholic beverages regularly and other than liking baked products, my severe vice is fruit juice as I confess that water doesn't go down well in my throat especially after I moved to a state that the water is kinda hard no matter if I use water softeners and purifiers. I detest artificial sweeteners as well. So I love my juices. That said, since starting this process, I've cut out juices (probably the most difficult thing I ever gave up!). I've not made any other severe diet changes (though definitely doing the head work) and I find myself losing a few pounds here and there. If you are able to keep it at one juice a day, more power to you as that seems manageable (juice was my water previously and I imagine if I even give an inch, I fear I may backslide completely). My nutritionist recommended HINT water as well as the infusing fruit water bottle thingy and it helped me transition from drinking juice to liking the taste of water and now I drink more water than I previously did, even uninfused [emoji1] Best of luck in your journey[emoji106] Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    I can’t date overweight people

If you had a problem with Alcohol, you wouldn’t want to date someone who was a big drinker. Find someone who has the same priorities and life goals as you. That is not shallow, it’s smart.

    Drinking Post Op

I have a family member who fell apart so quickly after WLS it was mind boggling. Currently doing a 90 day rehab after 3, 28 day rehabs did not work. She was fired 9 months before being fully vested and eligible for retirement. She missed her daughter's prom, graduation, and basically the respect of the entire family. Her health was rapidly declining, vomiting blood, jaundice, etc....from a 38 year old woman. She rarely, if ever, drank before the surgery. I don't post often here and not on the "how soon can I drink alcohol forums" as this rapid addiction isn't going to happen to everyone. I quit drinking completely after watching her rapid descent. Comes back to us in mid-July....praying that she can find peace and embrace sobriety.

    Does Allulose cause dumping?

My nutritionist said no sugar alcohols at all but I think they tend to treat them all the same as maltitol that tends to be the worst when it comes to gastric distress. But xylitol and erythritol don’t cause gastric distress and I found neither did Allulose. The one thing about allulose is it’s derived from sugar. My nutritionist said stick to anything below 4 grams of sugar. Which I ate less sugar prior to surgery (low carb) I haven’t gotten up to eating protein bars again yet. I can’t say if the hero bars would cause dumping and every person is different in what causes dumping. I can only suggest to try a bite and see how your body reacts. For some people even if it’s a sugar alcohol their body sees it as sugar. I’m sorry if that’s not helpful.
  11. I so get this! Yes, Mexican food is the same for me...and alcohol..not like I drink a lot, but it has been a part of the 'kids are out of the house'..let's go to a winery, etc. type thing.. Basically what you said. Um, after hearing about your experience with trying Saki, while i hadn't planned on trying anything alcoholic under 6 months (I'd love to tell all of you that I'll wait until I have a year under my belt but I don't feel the internal conviction on that point yet)....I definitely will keep your story in mind if I start thinking about it. I DO NOT want to crave anything if i can help it, but especially NOT CARBS
  12. Oh I LOVE this thought. From now on, I’m going to imagine my surgeon sitting right across the table from me watching and judging what I would eat. Brilliant! Also, my biggest food tigger is Mexican food. I’ve been in a few restaurants, but no Mexican ones and my ex-fave is literally in the same strip mall as my Pilates studio. Mexican food is my kryptonite. As goooooood as the smells are coming out of that place, I always feel so empowered because I’m going there to that building to work out now instead of eat Mexican food. Another trigger of mine is alcohol. Hubs and I used to glory in selecting the perfect bottle of vino to complement whatever meals we were making. Our first 3 anniversaries we got hooked on wine country in Napa and I desperately miss the whole experience. Maybe some day I can go back to experimenting with the perfect wine pairing for my meals, but at this point in time I just don’t feel able to handle it. About 2.5 months post-surgery, I “allowed” myself a half glass of saki with my sashimi we were having out and I was battling carb/bad food cravings for the next 24 hours. It was awful and it scared me
  13. I looked for a "smacks sibling" emoticon but alas, there was none. I've made it clear to my family what foods I consider to be 'trigger' foods - ones that either tempt me...or for now, ones that are just hard to see someone else eating. I seriously have tried to assure my family they don't need to be sneaking their food into other rooms...LOL. We all have to have some version of a 'new normal' life together. If I AM the one having a bad day or whatever is going on in my head, then I will excuse myself prior to the meal and they are not to take it personally. THEY still need to eat. What I do draw the line on in my own house (kids are technically out of the house) is any foods that were not part of the keto way of life my husband & I were followed up until my pre-op. As he has stated he will continue on keto, that is fine. My family knows the things that do NOT tempt me like ice cream or pie. If any of the miscreants bring in cake or cookies, there will be a brawl but it's not because of this surgery, I'd have had an issue with it when I was doing keto. Most of the time even that stuff no longer bothers me but like someone new in recovery from let's say 'alcohol addiction', people who are near and dear should not be drinking around them, especially not when someone is new in recovery (the exception here is that my family needs to eat to live so I do not expect them to abstain, just to be thoughtful). I see the surgery and the first few months after that as being new to a different type of recovery. Recovering from food addiction but NEVER cured just like AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and NA (Narcotics Anonymous) treat addiction. Everyone is hopefully on some path of recovery but you are never considered 'cured' which keeps you on guard against relapsing although it can happen and you just get back on the proverbial horse. LOL, maybe next time you are presented with a temptation, imagine drinking or eating it in front of your doctor...I was going to say 'in front of a mirror' which is something I've used before when I was...eating WAY too much and that mirror thing has stopped me quite a few times. Whichever would deter you the most...LOL
  14. Oh wow, great to hear from you! Ironically...we are at the same point but I noticed today I was foggier than I expected (although yesterday I was LESS foggy than expected..LOL). I have had a bad headache all day today. I did not give up caffeine until..well, I guess since I had 1/2 cup this morning I haven't given it up yet. I'm used to 4 to 5 cups a day though...so that probably has something to do with the headache. I noticed my dr's list is different than the nutritionist he sent me too. They both had soft foods @ first start of the 7-10 days, but since I didn't start until 'Day 8.5', I went ahead and started full liquid diet today (regarding Day 8.5 - on the way out of my doc's office last week, I teased him about being grumpy about 10 days and he said "7"...um...ok, maybe he was kidding? When I realized I should clarify, it was already the weekend so I'm taking a day of soft foods out. I've noticed some interesting variations - there are a few ppl I've seen on here doing a full FOUR WEEKS PRE-OP....I just shudder..LOL. Guess it was good that I already had given up sugar/carbs/etc as I was doing keto. I did something similar last week - one night I went out for Mexican and one lunch at a Chinese place. But it was just 1 meal each day...not the entire days. I did have a drink '11 days' prior but I have not had any alcohol since the 10 days started even though I didn't do the pre-op diet until day 8.5 (that sounds so weird!). I feel the same..nervous..anxious..and right now...a bit hungry..lol. Best of luck to you as well! Stay in touch. I know we have lots of other early July peeps out there!

    Grilled cheese alternative?

Your cravings might be just because you are so limited in food choices right now and need more protein and a little more fat to be satisfied - add some avocado with your egg and/or sprinkle cheese on the egg. You miss chewing - I know I did, it will improve with time. Six months from now it will be a blur and it will all change. Be patient and be prepared, it's a trip. And Fluffy just sees all kinds of eejits on here asking if they can have pizza at one month or alcohol and actually doing really stupid chit all the time, so her squawking sometimes sounds like chicken-little... @FluffyChix
  16. I'm going in on July 1st too!! One week from today!! I'm 3 days into my required 10 day liquid diet; feeling a little bit in a "fog", but not as hungry or cranky as I expected to be. I had a couple "food funerals", but didn't go overboard with quantities when I did. I gave up caffeine, alcohol, and carbonation just a couple weeks ago, and have been cutting back on sugar but didn't fully cut it until I started the pre-surgery diet. Good luck to you! I'm feeling very nervous and hopeful too.

    July 2019

You just have to remember that our stomach will be tiny and although we can't absorb nutrients normally, the affects of alcohol are greater than before. I'm sure my sister wouldn't have died so young if she had not had the surgery...even with the same amount of drinking, it would have taken years longer to have the same affect. I'm also certain that if she hadn't had the surgery, she wouldn't have been an alcoholic at all. She wasn't mentally ready for the change and after being big her whole life(this was in the 80s when being a stick was the norm) she just didn't know how to handle the attention. Just make sure that you are mentally in the right place for this surgery and be mindful of the affects of alcohol.

Just please be very careful if you drink alcohol. My sister had gastric bypass when she was 19 and she went totally wild after losing the weight and was partying all the time and became an alcoholic. We buried her at the age of 39. I only say that because you are so young.

Sad news if you like to drink

They also talk about "abuse". Whatever that means in terms of alcohol. Is a glass of wine or two on weekends now and then "abuse"? Then there is also the big difference between lethal acute intoxication and chronic damage (same with drugs). Personally I'm more worried about accidental drug overdoses. What comes to my mind is e. g. paracetamol. OTC, especially for WLS patients a go-to for headaches and it metabolizes via the liver.

Sad news if you like to drink

After I got down to goal weight, I thought it would be ok to drink on weekends. I was aware of the higher risk of alcoholism after WLS, but not that there was any increased risk of damage to your liver or anything. Now there's this: https://www.webmd.com/mental-health/addiction/news/20190620/drug_alcohol_deaths_soar_after_weight-loss_surgery#1 What a bummer! Oh well, one more reason to avoid empty calories. I tracked down the original article. It turns out most of the reported deaths were from drug overdoses rather than alcohol. They also didn't delve into causation vs. correlation. Big title, but not much real information. If you're interested: https://www.soard.org/article/S1550-7289(19)30143-1/fulltext

    Just sleeved 6-17-19!!

Hey! Looking for a Sleeve Sister or even brother to talk back and forth with! Here's a short story about me- I was banded in 2005 when I was 15 in Tijuana by Dr. Ortiz. Over 13 years, I lost about 70 lbs but by 2018 I had gained it all back. I found Dr. Udelhofen in Cincinnati, Ohio (working under Trace Curry) and he determined my band was slipped. I had no idea, but I believe it. So he removed my band in July of 2018 and initially I wanted to get the sleeve done the same day but decided against it. I didn't want to quit smoking and quit drinking. March/April 2019 I decided I wanted to go forth with it. I stopped smoking and decided to put my alcohol consumption on hold and here I am - 2 days post-sleeve! So far- I'm really not in pain. I feel nauseous more than I feel pain. Last night was terrible - I was in the shower taking off my dressings and got 2 of the 5 off when I felt really sick and dizzy. Thankfully, I'm staying with my parents currently since I'm single and I was able to get my Mom to help me out. But today I feel great. The only time I get any pain is when I'm sitting up out of the chair or getting out of bed. Speaking of bed, anyone else not able to sleep through the night? I typically am a side sleeper but I can only sleep on my back right now. So I'm up practically all night until I go to the chair to sleep. How long will this last for?! Anyone get hunger pains? I typically take a muscle spasm pill when my hunger pains start. Drinking 2 oz of powerade zero / water / protein water every 30 mins. Oh, since I'm new - How do I get one of those little goal tracker things you guys have at the bottom of your posts?~?~?

    Carbonated drinks

Earlier on, I could only drink a few sips of sparkling water at at time. It made me burp like crazy and I swear I could feel it travel through my stomach and intestines. Now (almost 8 months post op) I can drink sparkling water just fine, and in pre-op quantities. I suspect I do have issues drinking carbonated alcoholic drinks, but that is probably more because of the sugar content than the carbonation (a lesson I learned the hard way )

    Bad habits

It comes and goes.. recently I went to a fund raiser and could only eat salad with no dressing... I was so crabby , next time I’ll bring what I can eat even if it’s just for me..these changes can make us feel resentful but I look at it this way.. at 55 I hit my quota on bad food like 20 years ago.Eating that food brought me to the most unhealthy place I could be and I view the stuff I can’t have like drugs or alcohol to other addicts and I focus on the people around me and not the food I don’t get to eat!
  25. Recidivist

    Alcohol

I was a moderate drinker before surgery (wine at home on the weekends and occasional happy hours or dinners out during the week). My surgeon said no alcohol for a year, and ideally never. I'm now almost four months out and have not had a drink yet--and I'm hoping to give up drinking permanently. I'm not judging anyone for their choices, but I don't think my life will be less fulfilling without drinking. For me, it was more of a social thing than actually loving wine.
