3000 is too many calories if you want to lose in my opinion. I am not as far out as you though. At close to 5months out my surgeon says 800-1000 but I never consume that much bc I’m just not that hungry. I usually get 550-700 and that’s with a very strict 6 days a week gym routine with cardio and strength training. Hope this helps!

How did your family and friends react?
SteveT74 replied to Queenbee34's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I guess I have been very lucky because everyone that I have told has been very supportive, family, friends, employer etc. My dad had some concerns at first, but it wasn't the "why can't you just stick to a diet!" type of BS. It was just concerns about the risks of surgery--which is understandable. I think the reaction you get from people is related in part to how you explain the surgery and your reason for getting the surgery. In my case, I told people that "I had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and I have a family history of heart disease. I having 'metabolic' surgery at the recommendation of my cardiologist because he thinks it will significantly improve my diabetes and reduce my risk of heart disease etc. The fact that I will lose a substantial amount of weight is great, but the real goal here is to become much healthier, live longer and have more time with my kids." First, I am calling it metabolic surgery, not weight loss surgery. Weight loss surgery makes it sound like this is just another form of cosmetic surgery, like lipo---and it's definitely NOT cosmetic surgery (not that I have a problem with cosmetic surgery). No one is going to be judgmental when you say you're having surgery to treat diabetes or some other co-morbidity (just like they wouldn't question someone having surgery to remove a tumor--who the hell would leave a tumor in place if they could have it safely removed??). Even if you don't have any co-morbidities, that only means you probably have a BMI over 40 which also puts you at risk for heart disease and orthopedic issues. In that case, I would still tell people that you are having the surgery at the recommendation of your cardiologist and/or orthopedist (since weight and joint issues go hand in hand) etc. Not many people are going to question you for following your doctor's advice. Again, the less you make this about appearance the less likely people are going to judge you negatively. More importantly, I am not suggesting anyone lie--only that they share information in a way that makes it easier for people that don't have understand this surgery to appreciate why you would choose those over just going on another pointless round of weight watchers or jenny craig. -
Why you should NOT work out after WLS
Bougieb replied to Bougieb's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks for actually watching and not just calling bs after reading the title. The video made so much sense to me. Doesn’t matter what type time he’s on now as far as making money what he said in the video was true. Your mindset has to now match your new body and often times being obese and losing the weight doesn’t always changes everyone’s frame of mind. Looking at the gym as punishment and not as a goal won’t help you in the long run. I know for me when my mind wasn’t in it or I was in the gym out of guilt or self pity I didn’t last long. -
Mouse's you said you would like a permanent IV in you? Be careful WHAT you wish for, I have had a PICC line in my upper left arm for 2 weeks tomorrow, not a barrel of giggles and laughs, oh it does have some sterling features but my feeding solution weighs close to 8-10 pounds, which is (surprise surprise) the amount you cannot safely exceed lifting with affected arm, so must remember to always puck bag apparatus up with right arm, yeah the one that has broken twice and had to be surgical repaired 8 years ago with a titanium plate and 12 screws. So both of this birdies wings have been wounded! Squawk squawk! Most of the time I wear it on my back, let my back muscles bear the strain, get fed for 14 out of the 24, so if I put it on at 9pm it isn't through until 11 am the next morning. And a story upon myself, last Friday I made a trek to. the BR, and 2500mp being fed in means frequent #1 trips. Took bag off, laid it on my shower bench to take a test from the weight. Got up and went to swing it back on, over balanced , staggered trying to regain my center of gravity, ended up hitting the bathroom door with my rump and sliding down it to the cold floor. And there I am, cradling the bag in my arms like a sick toddler. Tomkitten , hearing the commotion, comes trotting from the other end of the house. Now remember hes's all mine , even thinks like me, poor kid. " Are you all right?" Oh yeah, every 72 year old woman dreams of sitting on a cold slate floor on a Friday Night! " Shall I pick you up?" No Junior, any stress on THAT ARM you better have your Funeral suit found because if the catheter snaps inside me, it goes to my ❤, my lungs I might make it to local hospital but I'll die before I make Columbus! So I rolled to my least injured side and by bracing my feet and doing some fancy maneuvers managed to regain an upright position. TK wishes he had. made a video to post on YouTube, said he would earn MASSIVE👍 and it would be,popular. How much longer will I have this? End of year soonest, longest FOREVER? And since it is an open access to my innards it has to be kept very clean and sterile as possible. Monday was to be a blood draw day for me, went to my local Band Aid Station, derogatory term Columbus hospitals have for my county community hospital, and the access was clotted off, had to get order to declot and make the PICC line open again. It was accepting the saline flushes and TPN in, but like a little toilet flapper valve, it was flopping closed. So spent a couple- 3 hours having it rectified, and I actually got a small free dinner. I had about a third cup mashed potatoes, some gravy and a Tablespoon maybe Tablespoon and half very tender Turkey that I chewed, chewed and put gravy( one bari-pal called it meat lube) on it, swallowed and kept it down. Mousecat, that is the first MEAT I have had since September 5th that I could keep down. And I took it abysmally slow but it worked. I almost cried with joy. And now my TPN for the next couple days will be clear, they are stepping back on the fat content, since I kept some food down. I made myself some potato soup with skim milk and my lower fat cheese, celery and onion, and pureed it down smooth. Heat up about a 1/2cup in the microwave, sometimes I can get it all down, sometimes not but slowly. with baby spoonfuls I try. I want to get WELL so badly!

Nutrition Change HELP!! Gout is killing me with my protein intake
FluffyChix replied to jrmolina2006's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Wish I could help. If it was me, I'd get off the protein drinks ASAP to see if it resolves slightly? I think they can be really hard on your body if you have kidney/liver issues at all. I'd honestly take it back to about 80g per day. Here's the math I used and the chart per Dr. Google: Let's say you're a medium frame: at 6'2" your "ideal" dream dude weight is in a range of 164-178lbs. Most will never see it. It's a range made by archaic insurance charts. But nevertheless, it's considered your "dew weight". In kg it is 75-81kg. And the protein prescription for most "normal build men" in normal condition and normal age and activity is anywhere from 0.8g/kg of weight to somewhere around 1.2g/kg of weight, averaging out around 1g/kg of "ideal weight." That is often also expressed in LBM but since we don't know your's, let's just do the math using your theoretical "ideal" weight. So by this measurement, I'd say that 81g of protein per day is "about" what you could get away with eating right now, until you can get the gout cleared up. Here's a link for low purine foods: https://www.healthxchange.sg/food-nutrition/food-tips/gout-diet-uric-acid-check https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/gout-diet/art-20048524 https://www.healthline.com/health/tips-for-following-low-purine-diet A theoretical menu would be something like: B- Eggs + low fat Greek yogurt with 1oz of walnuts and maybe a couple of cherries, or blueberries, or a few segments of tangerine. L- Avocado with 2-3oz of chicken breast (rotisserie) or with a cooked veg like zucchini or well-cooked broccoli AS-1-2 HB Egg + 1/2oz of pecans D- Pacific Sockeye Salmon (2-3oz) with steamed green beans and a spritz of olive oil BS-1-2 mozzarella cheese sticks or 1/2c of 2% cottage cheese + a strawberry or a couple of blueberries. I didn't put all that in MFP to see how much protein is involved, it still might be high. I'd plug your protein in at each meal and see what you have. Then you know what to add for your snacks. Then fill in with any room you have remaining with other stuff--veggies and fruits and some nuts if you tolerate them right now. Congrats on the losses! Hope you feel better soon! -
Well Mr Viking you have gone from fat chubby Hagar the Horrible to Wulfgar the Wonderful. I was ahead of you,on high weight 365 to your 346.5, 319 on my surgery day 9/05/2018, I also cheered when I too broke 300 and last Wednesday 12/05/2018 I was 260 when dismissed from my Ohio State University-Wexner Medical Center after a weeks stay. I now have a PICC line in my upper left arm, get fed 14 out of 24 hours a TPN solution, but still am regarding it as an unexpected quicksand on my Bariatric Journey, I shall still dance in the sunlight☀ and claim a Final JOYOUS VICTORY!

I’m scheduled for a gastric sleeve December 11th. The biggest thing I’m freaked out about is how many people are saying they have had dry heaves or have been throwing up. Is it bc of the surgery itself? Or the Aneasthesia? And can that hurt ur stomach? I mean like do damage or anything ?

Post Op depression/Struggle with meds
Athira replied to Athira's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks so much for the tips. I'm trying to keep us both positive but when she gets helpless I feel like nothing I say will help. She is supposed to take 8 of the thyroid tablets a day and yes I definitely think it's the amount rather than actually taking them. I will definitely try the sneaking a go because I think any of them is better than none at this point. She's very fed up with her stomach hurting constantly and is not sleeping well either so all these things have added to her not feeling great. But I'm happy to hear that someone who couldn't manage to be excellent at all the things you have to do is doing well. Her surgeon is less than helpful at check ups which is quite frustrating. Thank you for your kind comment, I think I'll even recommend she goes on this forum for the support that I can't relate to. -
Stalls suck green balls. At any time. But most especially the dreaded "3 week stall" that happens any time within weeks 2-6. LOL. I wanted to sacrifice small animals. Cuz I was eating like 4-500 cals and thinking, this is BS!!!! LOL. But I swear it will break. Stay the course. Drink your water, maybe even add in decaf green tea. Walk. Walk. Walk!!!

Are you buying pre-made meals? I’m kind of in the same boat bc my fiancé travels a lot. I’ve done some snap kitchen meals. Not sure if you have in your area. I’m starting to want more flavor and need to get more creative. For a while I was just happy to be eating food again and that has worn off.

Is gastric bypass surgery reversible at all??
kimbers18 replied to iPixie's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I felt exactly like you for the first two months. I had zero energy. I was off work for six weeks bc I couldn’t stay awake for more than 3 hours at a time. I threw up everything. I told my husband repeatedly it was the biggest mistake ever. Fast forward and I’m nine months post op and it was the best thing I ever did. Those first two months were a bear for me to figure out. I felt sick all the time and was sad all the time. But I followed my doctor’s plan to the best of my ability, I found a rhythm, I figured out what worked for me. And today I have more energy than I ever imagined possible. It seems impossible when you’re in the middle of those first months, but it gets so much better as your body and brain adjusts to the change. -
That's good info. Every document I have, including a 191 page Anthem BC/Prudent Buyer EOC, says nothing about nutrition visits required, doctor letters, 3 years of diet history attempts, etc...which honestly means nothing. That stuff could be mentioned elsewhere in document I don't have that's exclusive to my employer's plan selections. The only thing mentioned is the requirement BDCSC facility and 40 BMI. We just went through open enrollment so I really just need a policy number so I can call Anthem myself and see what the stipulations of my particular policy are. Not knowing is driving me insane. Hopefully we'll get our cards in the next couple weeks. When did you have your surgery (or when is it scheduled)?

If you are post-baby making days, you could consider ablation....I had it done three years ago along with a tubal. I was getting pretty heavy periods as I got older and went back on BC and 9 months later got a DVT, so i was never allowed to take any type of BC again..not even a copper IUD (which my GP said causes heavier bleeding in many people.). Long story short.....I no longer get a period and no longer have any cramps. I am past the point of wanting more children which is why i chose that. If you want children, you can't do that though.

The "you are guaranteed to lose your hunger" bs surrounding the sleeve is exactly that, bs. No surgery is guaranteed to make someone lose their hunger sensation. All the Ghrelin "research" isn't solid fact, we still don't understand hunger, how it happens, what *actually* triggers it, etc. Currently the information around Ghrelin is "we believe" not "we know". The sad truth is, the majority of WLS patients, no matter the surgery, will retain some level of hunger sensation or will regain that sensation within a year of surgery. It's rare that someone loses the sensation permanently. And some, never lose it at all. So if someone promised you that the sleeve would kill your hunger because it "removes" ghrelin production... well, they didn't tell you all the facts.

SEPTEMBER 2018 SURGERIES AND SUCCESS
Frustr8 replied to Frustr8's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
well dismissal got slower, I am going home today (December 5th) at 1 PM- 13 weeks, my 3-month surgiversity and exactly 3 weeks until my Birthday, December 26th, when I shall turn 73 years old. I am now old enough to boast instead of hiding anymore. My NaySayers keep dying off and I don't! And I will be going home with my PICC line still in my upper. inner left arm, and being fed by TPN 12 hours every evening. Not the the present I asked Santa for this year, do you think my letter somehow got crossed up with surgical orders from Doctors Needleman and Noria? Anyway my next E.G.J. will be December 28th, do have an appointment on the 19th but only with Valerie, Doctor N head nurse-practitioner, so no commuting my sentence that soon! Oh Well, it still beats Death all hollow!😛🚩🎭😛!!!! -
Why do you thin this is BS? The surgeon is supposed to call me today. I should know more after talking to her.
-
Will that's BS to the highest degree. Did they say why they couldn't repair the hernia? Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

I didnt want to try them bc in my mind I thought only one leg would fit un them. Definitely just try our brains play tricks. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

AMAW/CAMAW - Let's do this thang!
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Hahahaha! IKR?!!!! You are more brave than I! No way will I tell my RD about this experiment! What this is telling me is that I can do Atkins (any version), I can LC, I can Keto/Paleo/Whole30, whatevs! LOL. But I'm not cut out to be a pure carnivore. I'm a straight up, mid-hedonist omnivore! And IIIIIIIIIIII LIKE IT! Ha! I swear, I was jonesing for any veg yesterday. ANY veg. And I about cried to eat that broccoli and it was gone so dang quickly! *snort* I think the reasoning for doing this AMAW/CAMAW thing is: 1. To get back to basics of protein first and fill your pouch with dense protein. 2. Eat less (calling BS on this, cuz it made me have a meat binge last night) 3. Dump fluid. 4. Quick weight loss 5. Losing cravings/control appetite (not so much) *sigh* So far it's not helping. But maybe I'm detoxing right now? I do better when I IF. Seriously! LOL, thanks for experimenting with us though. I hope you will stick it out for the whole week? The only thing I think would be worse is the pre-op liquid diet 5 day pouch reset. OMAGERD! That would be terrible terbs! -

UPDATE for Day 2 (day 1 for me bc I'm terrible at timing) Um,. this is the worst thing in the world. :c ALL YO GIRL WANTED YESTERDAY WAS A DAMN APPLE. I was walking past while grocery shopping, staring at them the way I used to stare at like the cannoli or something. I also had an appointment with my RD yesterday and told her about it, and she was like "WTF why are you doing this to yourself?" I told her it was all for the sake of experimentation. Before surgery, I was a vegetarian. I feel like I naturally feel more comfortable with a lot of vegetables in my diet, but we shall progress! Protein: 80 g Carbs: 20 g Fat: 18 g 600 calories My RD wasn't very happy with my calorie counts, she said she wants at LEAST 1,000 a day. Which feels impossible to me, I feel like I eat CONSTANTLY. I did "cheat" at the end of the night and eat an Enlightened ice cream bar. But I don't care, and it was good. lol. -
Lol. My 3 month follow up doc was grumpy. Blood work came back great. A1c back in normal ranges. Cholesterol back to normal range (1st time in 20yrs) blood pressure normal. My pcos symptoms....well still waiting to see. Had ablation in 2011. Last 3 months you'd never know it. Things have been heavy cycle wise. Will say pcos symptoms have gone opposite direction from no cycle to spotting etc last 2 months. Have follow up with gyn in couple weeks to either redo ablation or go on bc pills. Only 47 yr old I know with a tubal thinking about bc pills lol. Hair is just now starting to come out little faster but I've gone from 275 on 8/1 to 205 this morning so things are good!!

So I'm not sure if I'll be in this January group or not - here's to hoping. I started the whole process of tests, psychiatric review, and 6 mos of monitored weight loss, etc 9 mos ago. The nurse said she submitted the paperwork on Wednesday of this week to BC/BS and it takes 15 days for review/approval. The nurse says they (not sure if that's the doc or BC/BS of Mass) have a surgery date but just haven't told me? Is that unusual? You'd think they would try to coordinate with me to make sure I was available work wise, made arrangements with family, etc.

AMAW/CAMAW - Let's do this thang!
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Well, it's kinda like this..."Don't Ask/Don't Tell" bahahahaha! If that's what it takes to keep you with us, then I don't think that a couple of handfuls of raw spinach or super greens is gonna hairlip the Pope. But strictly speaking? There are supposed to be no veggies in AMAW and CAMAW. But I can assure you? I WILL be using a bit of condiment here and there. Hello Vlasic Dill Relish in my tuna salad...a green onion in my egg salad. You see? And, if my ketones get too high and start sparking a cortisol dump (which has happened to me on account of my BS metabolism and hyperinsulinemia), then I WILL be grabbing a handful or two of spinach to gently bring me into a more shallow ketotic state. (I just probably won't broadcast it here.) This is kinda doing "caveman" style or Atkins '72 style of low carb for 1 week only. Just to be cray and shake things up. I like to do that once in a while.
