  1. For me it was quite a journey, as I started this journey almost 10 years ago in 2012 with my old doctors and through changes with doctors, insurance and locations it took me that long. This time because my insurance was giving me a bit of a hard time with approval to get my surgery I had 18 months of diet before I got my approval and date. But then I got a bit anxious and switched my surgeon, a decision I don't regret, and got rescheduled. For my insurance they prefer 12 months with at least 6 months of consecutive weight loss.
  2. As everyone has said stick to your plan and try not to compare yourself to others. All surgeons have different plans, and you will see the most weight loss from those that were on a liquid diet for longer periods. For example, my sister had the sleeve done in April and I in November, her weight loss is higher than mine at 3 months post op even though she was 215 at the time of surgery and I was 268, but she was on liquids for a full month, pureed for 2 weeks and softs for 2 weeks. I was allowed pureed food 10 days post op. We can see how much weight someone has lost but everyone's journey is different. Know that if you do what you are supposed to be doing and put the effort in, you will lose the weight.
  3. if you've been following your clinic's recommendations, then it's likely water retention from the IV fluids. That's basically salt water, and a lot of people retain that. There are some people on here who've even weighed 10 lbs more when they left the hospital than when they arrived! It can take a week or occasionally longer to work its way out of your system. stick to your plan and the weight will come off. Everyone is different due to different factors, many of which you have little to no control over (like age, gender, starting BMI, metabolic level, how much weight you lost prior to surgery, etc). The two things you DO have control over is how closely you stick to your plan and your activity level. If you do well with those, the weight will come off, whether fast or slow. also, the 20 lb loss you said you think you should have lost in the first two weeks - banish that thought. If you started out at 600+ lbs, then yes - maybe - but for us more "normal" WLS patients, losing 20 lbs in two weeks just doesn't happen. Most of us lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first MONTH. Yes of course you will find people who've lost more or less than that the first month, but they're outliers. You're probably doing just fine. Give it more time and remember to stick to your plan! I thought i was a terribly slow loser - and I WAS a bit behind others with similar statistics (starting weight, etc), but I ended up losing over 200 lbs.

    When to up calories?

Keep doing what you are doing. It's not uncommon to have frequently plateaus and then drop 5-10 pounds. also if you are lifting weights you will gain muscle mass as well and may not show a loss but that is fine. I had my surgery Nov 2021 and I am still losing and go up and down 3-5 lbs depending on the month. :) I have surpassed my goal weight and don't focus so much on the scale. I may weigh once a month if that. Just be mindful of your water and protein and the rest will follow.

    What should I expect?

I was definitely in the high pain camp after my bypass, but I also had a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time which likely made post-op pain worse. That said, even with the hernia pain, I've dealt with far worse (hi tibial plateau fracture! You were definitely a level 10!), and the post-op pain relief kept it all manageable. Took a good two weeks for the "hit by a truck" or "gut punched by a team of heavyweights" feeling to subside, but I was pretty zen about it because I knew it would eventually improve. I had some nausea post-op, but the drugs kept it in check. Everyone's experience is their own, however, so you'll never know until you're there how much or how little pain/nausea you'll have. Best thing to remember is it's temporary. As Catwoman said, the bypass post-op food plan is pretty similar to the sleeve, with the exception of the supplements. I hope it sorts out your Gastroparesis! Amazing transformation, BTW!

    January 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I had a VSG on 01/06/23. I loss 38 lbs since the pre-op liquid phase. I consume 800-1000 calories a day and aim for 80+ grams of protein a day. I feel good. I haven't had any issues with any foods. Well except that I cannot tolerate protein shakes at all so I rely on protein rich foods. I can also tolerate unflavored Genepro in my Crystal Light and some protein bars.

    Eating too fast!

I have not stuck to this rule at all and I think I've just been lucky. Since a few months after my sleeve once I know I can eat a certain amount then I have just it at a normal (quick) pace. I remember asking a question here about 6 months in about why I needed to eat one egg slowly if I already knew my stomach could comfortably accommodate one egg. I should say I have been, and I think will always be, very careful with portion sizes. So I'm not in the business of pushing it even a bit - if anything I will quickly eat something that I know is less than my stomach will hold in preference to sitting at a meal for half an hour to find out when I might feel satisfied. If I need a little top up of something 10 or 15 minutes later because I'm still hungry I just have a little piece of cheese or some deli meat. It has worked for me because I'm busy (and impatient). Not advocating it for everyone - everyone above has given very considered advice and experience - just saying what has worked so far for me.

Am I the only miserable one?

I’m struggling right now too. I’m not regretting but wishing there was a fast forward. Like you I take adderall for adhd and had similar eating pattern before starting this process with not eating much during the day but then a huge meal in evening -often a take away when the adderall wears off. I’m having a bit of the opposite problem. I’m finding food really unappealing right now. Just looking at a piece of meat (especially grilled chicken and Turkey meatballs)or smelling it is enough to turn me off. I’m struggling to tolerate vegetables, I’m still experiencing nausea semi regularly. Worse than all of those things I have really low energy. I may be 60lbs lighter than I was 6 months ago when I had my first consultation with my surgeon but I the tiredness I feel 10 weeks out from surgery is as if I was still dragging that weight around. I try to be very active and truly enjoy excercise esp swimming and weightlifting which I do in the mornings but by 4pm the exhaustion strikes and by 6p it’s like the thought of getting out of bed let alone preparing dinner feels like a gargantuan task. I’m exceeding my Protein and hydration targets and feel like I’m following all the rules, the weight loss feels controlled and stable, but I now seem to dread eating and am dreaming of the days I’ll see my pre surgery energy level. So even know I remain positive about the outlook overall in future, real time feelings in the present moment are like you somewhat miserable. And you know what, I think it’s okay to feel that way and not pretend everything is great. The reality is change comes from struggle and rewriting a lifetime of psychologically treating food as a comfort or enemy, or indulgence rather than what it truly is - the fuel for our bodies - at least for me probably requires this misery to reset. Wishing you some comfort to cravings. One food joy I was able to find was creating a Greek yogurt topping bar, having previously never liked Greek yogurt this now is a bright spot in my food day. I hope can find at least one comfort like me. Early on I did also have mental craving for egg rolls and other normal foods so I think what you experiencing is probably normal - since you mentioned Chinese I’m linking to a recipe that satisfied that craving for me. You should be able to have it as soon as you are allowed veg. https://stylishcravings.com/low-carb-easy-make-egg-roll-bowl/ Again hoping you find comfort soon and if you ever need to vent feel free to message me.

    Eating too fast!

Physical concerns aside, mindful eating is important in the success of the surgery. It’s difficult when our lives are so busy but it’s important to take meal time for you. Sometimes I divide my meal into thirds to pace myself and watch the clock for the 10 minute markers. I know for me eating something “quick” was part of my problem. I know plating my food is very important for me and often when I’m rushing to get a meal in that won’t happen. So in those times I know I’ll be in the car or out running errands, I bring a shake with me and take my time with it. These habits are meant to be long term changes and eating meals should take about 20-30 minutes. It’s also much better for digestion!

    Dealing with gastroparesis

I was sleeved in 2019 and developed Gastroparesis. I went from 240 to 125 but the vomiting is relentless. Now I am scheduled for a complete bypass 4/24 in hopes that it will relieve the symptoms. Would love to hear if revision had helped anyone else with Gastroparesis. My upcoming surgery is not for weight loss and strictly to relieve the vomiting and reflux but a tiny part of me is scared that I’ll gain weight once I heal.
  11. I can walk, upping it daily, and do some minor exercises like my arms up to week 10. From week 10 free to explore what I want to do. I will follow this but I’m keen to see how different it was for everyone. When were you cleared?

Am I the only miserable one?

I’m nearly three weeks and have been on an emotional roller coaster but I’m already getting better through talking honestly with my surgeon, asking questions of him, reminding myself of my why and just accepting it’s done! Get on with it haha I will be seeing a therapist though but after 10 days of tears I had enough of myself. One thing I don’t do now is google or check historical threads. I’m keen to live for now and the future, what will be will be.

    Hair loss and extensions?

It's funny. I was just contemplating extensions as well. My naturally curly hair got super dry around 10 weeks and my hair was bypassing tangles and becoming knots. Out of frustration and a little bit of post-VSG depression I gave myself a big chop. I'm going to get consult with my hairdresser to assess the strength of my hair.
  14. I’m losing quite a bit of hair and I’m 10 weeks post op. Has anybody here gotten extensions to help with hair volume? How did it work out?

  16. Just joined this site thanks to my mom who had Bypass about 10 years ago and found this place really helpful during her journey 🤗 I had my Sleeve surgery Jan 23rd. I feel like I'm doing okay but my body is SO tired all the time and I just really want to down water like nobody's business. I really miss being able to drink as much of it as I want

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hello everyone, long time no see. I am stable at around 120lbs as well for the last few months now. Seems like this is it for me. I do wanna lose 10 more. Not sure if it'll be possible. Got may be another 5 months or so before 18 months mark. Let's see if I can lose some more. But I feel my body likes it just about here. I am okay with it except not happy with the abdominal area so will be getting tummy tuck this year sometime and I am good to go I suppose. Congrats and good luck everyone! 🥳🥳
  18. im 4+ years out. I only followed the "dont drink 30 mins BEFORE meals" rule like the first 3 months. I discovered that drinking right up to the moment i put solids into my mouth had zero effect on me. so yeah. BUT...the "don't drink 30 mins AFTER you eat" rule, i still follow religiously. if I dont follow this rule, i will 10 times out of 10 feel super-uncomfortably full. And 7 times out of 10 i will eventually barf. Dumping: Im a sleeve and unfortunately, a dumper. If i have too much sugar (esp on an empty stomach) i will get some sort of symptom(s) within 20 mins. As in: heart racing, lethargy, lower stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, or just passing out. I could get one, some or all symptoms at once. *shudder* P.S. when the diarrhea and vomiting come together, its the WORST. luckily haven't had one of these particular episodes in years, but the memory is still branded on my brain. *double shudder*

    Russian Roulette

I had my sleeve revised to RNY 11/10/22 due to GERD. I stayed on fluids/purées/soft foods advancing very slowly. I didn’t start solid foods until end of December (about 6 weeks). Since then I feel like I’m playing Russian Roulette every time I eat. Sometimes I eat and feel fine without pain or restriction. Other times I will eat the same exact thing, same amount and be doubled over in pain until 4-8 hours later when I finally throw up and the food comes up not even partially digested. Every time I freak that I have an obstruction. Nutritionists say it’s too much fiber or too much fat, but it’s not necessarily associated with diarrhea and why, then, can I tolerate it sometimes and others not? Surgeon is sending me in for an upper GI barium study next week. I’m so stressed that I have stretched my pouch somehow but I can sometimes eat far more volume without issue compared to some of these episodes. Has anyone else experienced this? TMI, I’m also noticing pale colored stools but the pain is on the left, not on the right with my gallbladder. He said my gallbladder looked fine during surgery. I just need this to work so I feel better and can get on with my life.
  21. Hello, I unfortunately broke my 9th rib on the left side Saturday night. I went to the emergency room and made sure that they checked my stomach. Everything was ok there. But I was wondering if anyone else has broken any bones post op? Tomorrow will be 10 weeks postop for me. And did this have any negative impact on your progress? Thanks

    Zero alcohol beer

whats the point? Get use to drinking water and zero sugar/carb, no carbonated drinks. I am 10+ months post op i think. The only carbonated drink i have been able to have without issue is redbull and its because its lightly carbonated. and that was like 6+ months after surgery. I have yet to even attempt alcohol. I took a few sips of a pepsi and it was not too pleasant.
  23. I would think it is normal, food in food out, even if liquid. I had to do a bowel cleanse the night before surgery. Only clear liquids the night before starting at 6pm and a bowel cleanse between 8-10 pm. I was STILL pooping the next morning and was convinced I was going to poop on the operating table. I don't know if I did because I don't think they commonly share that information but I would bet i did. LOL Embarrassing! But, I am sure they are used to it and worse has happened. hahaha
