    Frustrated and Discouraged

I had my bypass surgery 9/19 also and going through the same thing. I read about the 3 week stall, but hoped it wouldn't happen to me it's been 2 weeks without any loss. I haven't read anything on how long it usually lasts. I'm hoping it will be over soon and I can get back on track. I am trying different things to jump start the weight loss. I have made a conscious effort to increase calories and this weekend I tried increasing carbs (from 20 grams to 30). Who knows how to get it to kick in again other then patience... which I have never been good at Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

THE SLOW LOSERS CLUB SUPPORT THREAD

For a young/fit person with no health issues who also takes no medication that can 'blur' the picture, I personally feel that 'calories in vs. calories out' can be much more easily tracked and trusted as an 'indicator'. That being said, after years of watching Dr. Now on my 600 Pound Life, I've seen him bust several people who were actually NOT tracking/weighing/truly accounting what their 'in' vs their 'out' was. I remember he didn't even really get into it with most of them on what their 'calories out' calculation was - he just focused on the 'in part' but I am in NO WAY comparing these patients that we could EASILY see for ourselves were sabotaging their weight loss efforts by simply continuing their food addiction that they were still choosing to NOT address. I am also a slow loser. I've hit that magical age...went into menopause at 40, take meds that interfere with weight loss, etc. etc. etc. I cannot remember if you posted about this, but when I went back to the nutritionist and my surgeon complaining about slow weight loss, I was shocked when they told me to UP my carbs and my calories. I was like 'say what??"...I'm hardly losing right now why would I want to INCREASE anything. I think I even vented on a thread and ppl like Fluffychix, etc. pointed out that maybe I should listen to my surgeon/nutritionist and gave it a try. I up'd my numbers and within a week while I was not losing much more quickly than I had been, my body was given a bit of a shake up...and my numbers picked up weekly for me. Just seeing ANY improvement, whether I was losing maybe 1 lb more a week or really....since my body likes to do a 3 week stall followed by a 3 to 5..sometimes 6 lb weight loss...my overall 'monthly number of pounds lost" did start improving. It was NOTHING that would make me one of the fast losers...but the fact that I actually increased my calories from 600-700 a day to be 800 instead...and increased my carbs from LESS THAN 30 (usually hit 20 grams or less) to 60 (YES SIXTY)....my body basically..needed to be shaken up. There is much written about 'set points' and a whole bunch of other physiological data that proves there is science behind these set points we get stuck at. I think Dr. Weiner's videos address some of these....I'd have to get Fluffychix's thoughts on this but I know she has a wealth of knowledge accumulated in that beautiful head of hers. Because I'm now 6 months out and my weight loss is still slow...I know I have one thing in my control that has been set aside this past week - exercise....but I'm going to start exploring IF. I think you mentioned that prior to surgery you were doing intermittent fasting and maybe something else (can't remember) and your weight loss was more back then (although the more we lose/have lost overall, it seems.the harder it is to get the remainder off) . I know Fluffy mentioned a couple of months ago that I was still a bit early out to be thinking about IF...or maybe another poster mentioned, but that is the next thing I'm looking at as my body, for DECADES has ALWAYS managed to adapt to whatever method I was using to lose weight and in my mind, it went into survival mode and decided "thou shalt not lose any more weight". So I know I need to adjust/shake things up when I truly KNOW and can document I am doing the right things...but nothing is happening. I also know I need to wait until nothing has literally happened for at least 3 to 4 weeks before I concern myself with a 'shake up' in what I'm doing. Keep staying the course...and maybe ignore the peeps talking about in vs. out as there are SO many variables that can cloud this..whether there are things we are missing or actual variables like health, age, medical conditions, medication, body set points, metabolic resistance, etc. - and talk with your nutritionist about what are some changes they might recommend based on your personal history and where you are at...

    I guess I’m regretting a little...

Ugh. While I do sympathize and validate the feelings expressed here, someone has just GOT to talk about the elephant in the living room with the pink tutu on! Reality check here guys...your brains are totes SCREWED up! I don't know what does it. Maybe it's all the fault of My 600lb Life? Dunno... But OP you've lost 14lbs in ONE WEEK (by your words Aug 21 thru Aug 28--that's 7 days if math serves me). Let me repeat that and shout it out for you: YOU'VE LOST 14 LBS IN ONE FREAKIN' WEEK! Instead of being busted and down, you should want to turn cartwheels. That's amazing! Congrats! Turn that frown upside down and get ready for the very common "3 week stall" that happens somewhere between weeks 2 and 4. You will likely average anywhere from 2-4lbs/week. This is not magic surgery. And WL will never be linear. It's the best thing that's ever happened to most of us. (And for the record? I've NEVER lost 14lbs in one week. EVS.) . I honestly want to ask if you're pullin' our chain? Cuz let's do some more basic math: August 21 - Sept. 4 = 13days. In 13 days you've lost 20lbs. That is WELL over 1lb per day. LOL. That's phenomenal and you can't possibly hope to keep that up. It won't happen. Please read above at the 3week stall phenomenon. You ladies, need to reality check your brains and reframe how you look at this surgical intervention. This is usually about slow steady progress--not huge losses overnight. But some DO experience those dramatic losses. Hell. You are both experiencing it right now. Dig in. Sit back. Do the work and enjoy the ride. Cuz the weight loss WILL happen unless you screw the pooch. And nobody wants to screw the pooch. Congrats to you both. I'd trade places with either of you in a heart beat.

    Stalled at two weeks out..

I am 3 weeks post op and have not lost a single pound over the last few days but I'm not worried. I was prepared for the 3 week stall so I am just sticking to the plan and enjoying the changes that I am noticing in my body. We will both move past this stage and continue losing. Stay positive and follow ur plan and you will do great!

I've been in a 3+ week stall that normally would have me off the wagon (before the sleeve on a regular diet, I would give up at the 3 week mark with no movement!) Crushed by today's weigh-in

Most doctors aim for 2 lbs of weight loss per week on their reduced calorie diets. Following low carb, you can expect a loss of Water and inflammation during the first 2 week since equalling about 10% of total weight to lose, then slowing to about 2 lbs a week after that. There are hundreds, nay, thousands of posts about the 3 week stall on here. Many people will experience a stall on weight loss during that time frame, and periodically thereafter. A monthly cycle will affect scale weight, as will things like sodium intake and the time of day you weigh, wether you've had a bowel movement and stress levels.
  9. I don't know how anyone could be overweight when they just need to get on a scale. We all know mental and emotional distress cannot be detrimental in any way. I mean if you have a 3 week stall, you are just as happy as a 10lb loss. Nobody ever has dove head first into a pint of ice cream, crying themselves to sleep thinking no matter what you do, you will always be fat. I mean, if some articles say it, you must do it. I guess I should tell everyone on keto that they can never lose weight eating all that fat. Research has shown low calorie is the only way. Sent from my SM-G930P using the BariatricPal App

Lower-end BMI Sleeve Surgery. Any others?

I began with a lower BMI as well. Currently I am 4 weeks out. My surgery was Sept 8th. The 1st month was brutal. In the beginning I felt amazing! Then the exhaustion kicks into gear. Of course it didn't help that I also ended up with a horrible head cold 2 1/2 weeks post-op. But, I'm fully recovered from my cold now. I'm finally at the point where I feel like I can function like a normal person and am feeling amazing again! The dreaded 3 week stall is over, for now anyway. This has been the best thing that I have ever done for myself! It's me time! Time to get me healthy, happy and regain my self confidence again. Even on the hardest days, I never once regretted my decision to get the sleeve. I'm so excited for what's a head!!! Good luck to you on your journey as well!

    Plateau at 2 weeks?

It's completely normal. Happens around 3 weeks to 99% of us. Do a search for the "Dreaded 3 Week Stall" in the search engine for this site. Keep getting your fluids and protein and it will pass Take it a little easy on the excersising. You can't eat enough calories yet to compensate for it.

    The Stall From Hell

It's just the 3 week stall. You're not doing anything wrong. It happens to 99% of us, and you just really have to let it pass. You can try a few things to feel proactive, but it's gonna happen, and yes, it's gonna pass. Not one person I know has stopped losing weight at 3 weeks out! Stalls further out? Heck yeah you should be able to tweak some things to get the scale moving again. But this one is going to happen and not pass until your body is good and ready. Could be a week....could be 2. Could be 3. I know it feels like it, but it's not the end of the world. Work your program and stay off the scale and stop stressing! You know the stress hormone causes weight to hold on, also. Someone wise once said "Stalls are like lovers. Your first probably won't be your last"
  13. I think 10,000 is a reasonable goal. I walk my two 15 minute breaks at work and half my lunch break and get those steps in before I even leave work. Breaks it up and makes it easier to obtain. Then I hit the gym for weight training or another 30 minute workout like the elliptical at least 3 times a week. I'm 7 weeks out and had the 3 week stall myself..actually 3-4 week stall. Lol Lower BMIs don't lose as quick either. I'm losing super slow but I'm losing and that's what counts. Just keep with it and it'll break through. It did for me.. 14. Don't get discouraged! The 3 week stall is a bummer, but you will get past it. Just continue following your diet. RNY 15 weeks out--83 lbs. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  15. You're not doing anything wrong. A stall early out is so common, it even has a name (The Dreaded 3 Week Stall). The body is just adjusting to the fast weight loss and lack of calories. Right now your job is to worry about hydration and protien, not calories. That will come a little later out. Give yourself time to heal, stay hydrated and get that protien in and the stalls will pass.
  16. I must say I'm a little taken aback by the number of posts I've read on this forum recently by people who seem genuinely surprised that you can gain weight after having surgery. Whether it be Water retention during that first month (3 week stall) or simply 9 months down the line and someone is eating crappy foods and not following their plan anymore....it is most certainly possible. In fact, no matter what type of WLS you have, a person who is determined can eat around it. This is why most of us are forced to have a psych eval and see a NUT several times before surgery...so we understand this is not fool proof. This is not meant to be a criticism of anyone here. My real concern is why aren't your doctors and NUTs driving these points home with you before surgery? My surgeon made me sign a document stating I understood I had to eat right and exercise for the rest of my life or the surgery wasn't going to help me. If I could say one thing to everyone it would simply be that the surgery will not do everything for you. You have to eat the right things, and you need to exercise. The sleeve helps initially. But as time goes by the sleeve does less and less, and you have to do more. The people I've seen here who have been successful are those that embraced those changes and learned better eating habits while they were still in the honeymoon phase, so when their capacity to eat increased they made better, healthier choices and maintained their goal weight.
  17. How did you get past it? I know part of my issue is protein intake. I can't eat much at a time so it's hard to get it all in. I also am running out of ideas for breakfast. I just started some solids this week (fish, tuna, canned chicken, etc). I am not complaining at all...I am down 20 pounds which is amazing but I want to make sure I am doing everything I can to lose and still follow the plan! I didn't have the surgery just to find ways to cheat so any suggestions on the right way to kick start the weight loss again?
  18. I know people talk about stalls, and that they're a normal part of the process and I've heard about the dreaded '3 week stall' but I'm only 2 weeks post op (yesterday) and although I have lost weight since pre-op and surgey, the scale hasn't budged in 5 days. In fact, I gained a pound. I've just been on clear liquids... so what gives??!!? feeling pretty bummed.
  19. I don't know if I had the dreaded 3 week stall. I only weigh myself once a month unless I go to the doctors. The scale makes me crazy and I tend to lose focus. You do need to try and get your Water in or at least increase your water intake. Your body needs it for weight loss. Try adding maybe a ¼ cup to your Protein shakes or pouring them over a cup full of ice. Most importantly step away from the scale a focus on eating right and exercising. One month out your body is still adjusting and healing. Just continue doing the right things and the weight will come off.
  20. I started out weighing daily. But after hitting the 3 week stall, I started weighing weekly for my sanity. [emoji1] Since being on lockdown, I've starting weighing myself a couple of times a week to make sure I'm staying on track. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    ???????????? Fustration????????????

You hit the 3 week stall everyone talks about. I hit mine at about 4 weeks and it lasted 1 1/2 weeks then I lost about 5 lbs the next week. Happens to everyone:) I am 9 weeks out and I have started losing about 2-3 lbs average. Keep it up and you will get through.
  22. Well hang in there. I just broke my 3 week stall. It was really stressful but I tried not to worry about it.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hi there, My VSG was July 12. I have had hunger but not from the beginning. For me it seems to be associated with Carbs. Try to stay low on carbs. Drink lots of water (as much as you can). I am finally at my 3 week stall (Week 6) and it is frustrating. I'll try to be patient but this would be where I would normally decide screw it, I'm working hard and no progress. Luckily, I can't very well say that now cuz I can't eat much no matter what I feel like. I'll hang in there for the journey. I'm certain it gets better and I'm glad I can't say screw it this time.

    ESG post diet

Hi. I had my ESG on June 15th. I agree with you, it doesn’t make sense and mine was for 21 days. At day 15th, I was doing great and added sugar free pudding, Greek yogurt and hummus. No issues. I’m now a day past week 4. My weight loss has slowed tremendously, but everyone or majority slow down or have a 2 to 3 week stall. But it’s still about the calorie deficit. I’ve started with weights but I know I need more cardio. With the liquid diet I was too exhausted but now I’ve added other soft foods and energy is coming back. Unlike sleeve or bypass, my doctor has released me to do any workouts. We don’t have the staples or stomach cuts.
  25. Sleeves on Jan 3rd Starting weight 257 Current weight 197 Goal weight 165-175 I just came out of a 3 week stall and lost 5lbs this week. I’m still having some trouble with spasms and take meds before I eat. My vomiting after meals has finally gotten better. I’m lifting weights and trying to remember that my weight loss will be much slower now that I’m building back muscle. But being in a size 10/12 pants again is making me really happy. I’m 5’8 and was most happiest with my weight when I was 165, but now that I’m 40 years old, I think 175 would be a great goal also. My doctor thinks I should have a goal weight of 150. If it happens it happens.
