How do you take the vitamins?
Forsythia replied to yescobar's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Initially I was on a Centrum chewable. But two months out now, I've switched to a prenatal (I'm not pregnant, but my NUT recommended either one pre-natal or two normal Vitamins, so I opted for one pill rather than two). The prenatal Vitamin is huge. I swallow it fine. But I was on the chewables for months before my surgery and about 6 weeks after it. If you are worried, get a Flintstones kids chewable vitamin! -
Looking forward to my 2nd fill!
JustWatchMe replied to lcoolpix's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I can't tell if I need another fill or not. I can eat certain things like salads without a problem. I can eat about three ounces of solid protein like ground meat without a problem but then I feel a soft stop. Other foods like pork chops get stuck right away. I'm thinking I will wait until my scheduled appointment in July to decide, but I will probably stay put. Salads and bread may be sliders for me, so I want to start focusing on protein and veggies only right now. I've lost weight this month but it bounces up and down. I'm on my second fill and have 7 in a 14cc band. -
You need to poop! Once you do, weight yourself again and you'll be so shocked. Also, make sure that you are getting in your protein and water. I had a 3 lb gain at 3 weeks out and it was devastating. It was also time for my period, so I was bloated from that. You'll get over this hump sooner than you know.

I was sleeved on 3/22 and reached 21 lbs down three days ago. But now, I have gained three lbs back! I am so discouraged and upset, I just don't know why I haved gained 3 lbs. Maybe I am not getting enouch Protein. Or maybe its because I haven't had a bowel movement in a week. Anyone know what I should do? I am so discouraged. Please someone, tell me what to do. I have heard of the three week stall because at first before I was three weeks out I thought that is what had happened. But now, I get on the scales after two days and I have gained! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When will the weight come off?
donnalemaster replied to donnalemaster's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks to everyone who has offered advice!!!! I've actually LOST a few pounds. I think I was eating TOO MUCH! Since I've started keeping track of my food and exercise (fitday.com), I've come to find I was taking in too many calories for the activities I was doing. Not to mention- my husband likes to eat burgers and bad food every weekend so I think that was doing me in too! This weekend I told him to only go where I can get something healthy. Threw a wrench in his plans, but he's always telling me to increase my workouts so I can eat what I want- nevermind that that is what he does and he has high cholesterol and high uric acid. No thanks! Anyhow, I am increasing my workouts to 5 days from 3, staying at 30 minutes, but I'll be doing the treadclimber Tues/Thurs and the stationary bike M/W/F. PLUS watching my food intake- I think I will start dropping much faster very soon. I DEFINITELY need another fill! They are wanting me to eat 3oz. of meat and I am still easily at 6 oz. This is much smaller than before the band but still too much. I can still eat quite a bit. Anyhow- I will give you all another update in about a week! Thank you all so much again for your great advice!!!! -
Drink Water, often! I was admitted initially for dehydration. I was drinking enough, even though I knew I was getting what I was supposed to. Then we figured out it was my blood pressure medication Lisinipril. The water was absorbed differently. It doesn't happen to every one. Anyhow it turns out my kidneys were affected and there was no blood flow getting to my kidneys, my kidneys became to get really sluggish. They Bolis (two IV bags) me twice in a half an hour. After the first my output was only 30cc, and the second 17cc. They then put an emergency consult in for a nephrologist, and were considering putting me on an emergency dialysis. Thank the high heavens, after begging to walk, I was able to get things moving again. I drink more water now then I have to, and do not take the lisinipril any more. So three hospital visits in a month. Sucks! Not to mention all the fluids they gave me, made me gain some weight back. I was ticked off. The fluids are starting to flow away and am starting to lose again, but this has been outrageous. All because of a little pill. I still have to take blood pressure meds because my blood pressure is not under control still. I don't take as much as I did, which is good. I hopefully don't have to take them in the future, they just want to continue them until they think it is controlled. MY PSA for the day! LOL Drink your fluids! If something feels wrong, go to the hospital or call your surgeon. Thank you!

4 months post op, stopped by to say Hi
sandibly posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Having this Lapband was one of the BEST decisions i ever made. I am feeling great. and losing weight, I've dropped about 58 lbs to date. Haven't had any issues at all. sometimes if i eat too fast, i do get "stuck", i've even slimed for a few minutes. But it is teaching me to be more careful. i don't spend much time on the website anymore, and actually I don't spend much time on the Internet, I am too busy going to the gym, hiking in the woods, laughing and playing...... I am in the proccess of getting my body in enough shape so that next year at this time, i will be able to ride a bike to and from work (30 miles round trip) a few days a week. i am in NO hurry to lose this weight. I'll take what i get....... The band won't work on it's own........ but the Band and I make a pretty good team....... -
I know we all have them, but plateaus are hard to get through without advice and encouragement. So far I haven't had much problem with it - until NOW! Almost 3 weeks of no loss. I've been faithful and have been exercising. What are your thoughts on plateau. Need ENCOURAGEMENT!

Anthony, I like your post. I haven't had surgery yet (hopefully March) but it seems like too many people focus too much on Protein drinks. I am all for pureeing cottage cheese and greek yogurt with more skim milk to get the needed protein. My surgeon's office suggests dairy as our primary source of protein for the first 3 weeks. They also want us to eat/drink 100gr of carbs so that we are NOT in ketosis. Should be interesting how my progress compares to those who eat less carbs.

My name is Jenn and I'm 30 years old. I'm 5'1" and I weigh 226lbs. I'm scheduled for the sleeve on Feb 9th at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, NJ. I wasn't always overweight, but I have been for about the past 10 years. When I started college it was easier to stop at fast food places in between classes than it was to go home and eat. I didn't think it would be a problem as I never really had a problem being overweight. WRONG! I didn't know that I had an underlying thyroid condition until I really started gaining. Once I got my thyroid levels under control I thought that it would be easy to take the weight off...WRONG again! The past few years have been the worst with my weight. I've tried WW, low carb, low fat, counting calories, meds, and I even went to the Center for Medical Weight Loss. I was always able to lose the weight, but I'd be killing myself in the process. I'd wake up really early to exercise and follow the diets and by the time work was over I was ready to crash. I felt like I had to work 10x as ha d to lose half the weight a normal person would lose. I started thinking about WLS and was going to get the band, but then my sister who is a nurse came to a seminar with me. She said that if she was going to do surgery she would do the sleeve. I began doing more research and decided this was best for me. I had my first consult on Dec 11th. I've done all my required things for ins and was approved on Jan 6th. I have to do pre-admission testing within the next week or two. I'm scheduled for Feb 9th and I can't wait to get my life back! I have the best support system. My mom is excited for me, my boyfriend although very nervous couldn't be more supportive, and people who I thought would be negative surprisingly weren't. That definitely made this wait til surgery even easier.

What is the downside?
AvaFern replied to theskinnyone's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
For me the downsides would be that if I eat to quickly I barf, I can't sit down and eat a meal like a normal person, I can't have too much sugar or I get sick, and I can't chug Water. I also get randomly barfy over food that usually doesn't make me sick, I need to use a straw or I can't really drink a lot, and I am reminded everyday that I gave up 80% of my stomach so that I could be thin. I don't get to enjoy Nachos during football games, I have to be insanely careful about what I eat on dates (it is less than sexy to be puking in the parking lot) and despite all of this, I still have to watch what I eat and weigh myself every single day so that I don't gain weight. For the rest of my life I am going to have to be just as careful about what I ate as I used to be, I am never going to get to really sit down and pig out on a good meal again, and the hair I lost the first few months after surgery may never grow back to the thick lustrous mane of fantastic hair that it was before. Despite this, every single day of the year I would have the sleeve surgery all over again. The only thing I regret is that I didn't do it sooner. I read through all of these posts before surgery and I kept reading "I regret I didn't do it sooner" so the first few weeks after surgery when I was sick and miserable and couldn't eat anything I thought all of those jokers were lying. Nope, they weren't lying. My life has dramatically improved, and while there are major drawbacks, I wouldn't trade in my sleeve for any of them or all of them combined. It won't be a pleasant surgery, recovery won't be fun, you will feel like crap, you will be cranky, and you will miss your old pal food...but in the end, it will be worth it. Good luck! -
Hi Everyone My name is Sarah. I had my surgery on Thursday 1/22.. I'm 24 years old.. My preop weight was 240 and my surgery weight was 224 (2 week optifast liquid diet) & my current weight is 218! I've been reading everyone's experiences and I feel like I've had a pretty decent recovery so far, I haven't had to use pain meds at all, just a sleep aid (zquil). I have 5 incisions and only one really bothers me where there is a dent that I'm told will go away with time. It's pretty sore and hurts when I move and bend down but I guess it's better than having all of them hurt. I have the normal gas pain in my shoulders and back but every day it gets better, it kinda hurts when I breathe which is annoying. I haven't got much sleep but I'm grateful for the minimal pain. My big problem is it really hurts when I drink anything so I'm having a lot of trouble meeting my water and protein goals. Every sip I take feels like bricks. When does it get easier? When does that stop? All I want to do is drink a glass of water, I am SO thirsty & noticing that I'm pretty weak. Also, does anyone have any other suggestions in meeting protein goals besides the dreadful shakes? Is there any high protein soups out there? I'm feeling so frustrated today, I just want to feel normal again. I know it's still early & I need to be patient but I can't help but read people saying they can swallow normally after a few days & I'm still having so much trouble Thanks for any advice you can give me S

Foot Surgery 4 Days Post Lap Band Surgery
pugsx3 replied to twi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a similar situation last year with my insurance - I had to have bunion surgery on both feet last December - and I had them done 3 weeks apart. I then got my lap band in September. The only thing that may be tough for you, is you may have a harder time getting around. Activity will help with weight loss, and foot surgery will probably limit that for a while!! Good luck to you, and if I can offer any help - let me know! ps - The foot surgery was not bad - I found the pain I had was due to swelling. The Dr. gave me Vicodan for pain, and it did nothing for me. I had a prescription anti-inflammatory that I took instead of the Vicodan, and that resolved the pain issues completely. I know I should not have self prescribed - but I had them left over from a shoulder injury, and I figured it could not hurt. I told the dr, and he understood, and was glad I did that. If you're just out of lap band surgery - I'd check with both your lap band surgeon and your foot dr, as I do know that the anit-infammatories can cause problems with the stomach and the band. -
Hi My name is Gabby I'm 46yr old grandma from York UK, I've completed all pre-op testing my final re-op appointment was 2 weeks ago and my consent form has been signed. I'm sure i'm not alone when i say I hate waiting....the not knowing when i can start my pre-op diet is so frustrating not knowing if i should do another grocery shop or not....going to start phoning my surgeons secretary tomorrow to try and push things forward. I just want to get started it feels like i've been waiting forever.

I think they will find their mistake eventually. I did the 3month surgery prep thing. Once I did all the things they wanted they approved me. The approval process was a bit slow. Read my topic on "advocate for yourself." I am about 6 weeks out now and am very happy I did this. Khy

Yes, had the biopsy and mine are not bacterial, just good old fashioned ulcers. He said they have to be healed before surgery. N I'm trying to make the best of it but yeah I am BUMMED OUT big time !! My follow up endoscopy was pushed back 2 more weeks as my doc doesn't think they will be healed in 6 weeks. Also had my psych veal last week and the psych wants to see me again !? Anyhow, it seems like its never going to be the end of the road for me !! LOL Gotta laugh or I'd go crazy Good luck to you !

Looking For Help On My Journey!
Amanda 3.0 replied to lysh's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi, hopefully you will be able to get some good help here. What are you eating at two weeks out, and how much? Many of us did not eat solids for quite a few weeks. If you are eating solids and they hurt, perhaps back off and go to liquids. Did your doctor give you a schedule for incorporating types of foods back into your diet? For example, my doctor's plan is five weeks of liquids, then a soft foods for a few weeks. Then, solids as tolerated. Some solids are especially hard to deal with. Many people have a hard time with chicken, surprisingly. As far as pain, when I have any of that (rare) I stick my chest out a bit. It seems to alleviate that. -
Hi...thanks for responding. I am currently on a puree diet for the next 3 weeks. Even a puree diet when I swallow it hurts and I can only eat about 4-5 bites of anything. I am afraid because I just can not get the protein in and I am already starting to worry about hair loss if I do not get enough protein! I know it will get better, but it is quite the challenge eating right now!

Gastric Sleeve on 1-5-15: New Year, new me!
Aerohead21 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My name is Kristen. I am a 33 year old single mom in KS. I just had the gastric sleeve done on 1-5-15. They injured my spleen while in there so my recovery has been rough. I am lucky that my insurance covers the surgery and I have options in my area. A lot of people don't have insurance coverage and they have to drive far away just to find a surgeon. With that said, today is day three and I am pretty miserable. -
So I have attained my 1st NSV:) One of the things that happened when I hit my ultimate low and made the decision to get my lap band was when my wedding ring wouldn't fit:( I had to have my ring enlarged a few years back and at that time it was no big deal. But to have to do it again was really disheartening. I am 2 weeks post op and I have lost enough weight and water weight that my ring comfortably fits again. This is so motivational. It was hard when my husband asked why I wasn't wearing my band and I told him it was cutting off the circulation in my finger. I think this was the point when he realized how much I was struggling too. Oh well that is in the past. The ring fits now and I hope the next thing I have to do is get it made smaller.

No, I just weigh it before I pack it and/or bring portion controlled, single-serving items (I am very guilty of eating Lunchables and leaving the crackers behind in a pinch LOL). I actually pack both my breakfast AND lunch AND snacks when I go into the office, a 10 hr day that starts at 6:30 AM once a week. The way I figure it I need to take care of Future Me's needs so I don't feel tempted to go poking around in the vending machine. My lunch usually looks like this (I am 18m post op and am in maintenance, but my calories are low because I am a small person): Breakfast: Zero sugar Chobani, 1/4 oz of chopped walnuts or pecans, Super Coffee protein shake as a mid morning snack. (all in, about 200 calories and 25g of protein) Lunch: Veggies, some kind of dip (if you aren't making dips with greek yogurt what are you doing with your life?), usually a couple of "lunchmeat roll ups" that are each one slice of deli meat and half a slice of cheese, another 1/4 oz of nuts (usually pistachios this time), a couple pickle slices (usually somewhere around 250-ish calories and another 25g of protein) Snacks: Options include Babybel light and a couple triscuits, Campbell's Well Yes sippable soups, protein shakes, or half a protein bar (I usually end up with leftovers)(any of these would give another 10g or so of protein). I eat dinner at home with my husband on these days and it's usually something protein-heavy

I was unable to lift more than 20 lbs for the first two weeks...
-
Hi All! I've been lurking for almost a year and still don't know what to do. I'm a Mom of 4 oldest 11 youngest almost 2 and i'm FAT!! lol No surprise there then! I went for a consultation at the begining of the year and although I didn't meet the actual Dr (he had been called to an emergency) I did meet a nice Dr who said I could have lapband but thought I should give health and fitness a try again, she made me all sorts of promises of help and support including a lowcost personal trainer to come to my home three times a week. Well she never followed up.... I came out all fired up but I didn't hear from her again. So here I am fatter than ever as miserable about it as ever and wondering what to do next! I have only managed to lose 31lbs in the past (three times) and then I put it all and more back on. I lack the willpower to resist once I get a few lbs off as I am feeling better about myself and clothes are not looking soo bad. So if you have got this far have you any advice for me?? Thanks in advance. Gilly. 5'7" approx 245lbs.

You can expect a great change in your life:) Really expect some pain. But take your pain medication that the doctor gives to you. Don't over do it, but make sure that you walk as much as possible so the air comes out that they pump into you during surgery. You might want to get yourself some Gas-X strips for gas pains (which is from the air). Recliners are good to sit in after surgery. If you don't have one make sure you prop a pillow under your left side (If that is where your port is going) when you lie down. Body pillows are great too. It takes a good 2 weeks before you are totally back to normal. Make sure you drink your fluids. And don't cheat. Stick to the plan that the doctor gives to you. It's important for your body to heal. Most of all don't be upset if you don't lose much weight the first few weeks. It's all about the healing process. Get yourself some sugar free ice pops. Not only are they good but they help with the swelling too. Good luck to you and please keep us posted on your progress. CONGRATULATIONS!! Do you have a surgery date yet?
