Day 3 after surgery.
Jachut replied to Russian_BANDit_inNY's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, entirely normal when you're afraid of what might happen if you eat! I've only dim memories of the post surgical phase, it was over five years ago now, but I've recently had a bowel obstruction and that was pretty darn painful. I was 3 days of nil by mouth in the hosptial, then onto post procedural fluids. It took me 2 weeks to get up the courage to move off mushies, and only at the urging of my surgeon and oncologist who were threatening sustagen (urgh) because I'd dropped to 58 kgs which is well and truly in the underweight territory for me. I was really scared of a recurrence and felt quite sure I could live on mushies indefinitely, lol. But naturally everything was absolutely fine. Post lapband - you might find your weight does strange things as you move through phases. I mean you've done pre op - and probably had significant weight loss - then pre surgical fasting, then a while with no food and then liquids, move onto mushies or solids and your weightloss will most probably stop, that's if you dont actually gain a couple of pounds. Be logical - you CANT gain 3 lb of fat overnight, its physiologically impossible, you know its got to be Water weight. Dont let it get you down, try not to weigh yourself daily, stick with the progam and you will succeed at this, but know that weight doesnt drop steadily, logically or predictably week by week and prepare for that fact -
I have hypothyroidism and was diagnosed when I was 8 years old -- I've had it for 32 years now. I'm currently taking 200mcg of Synthroid. I am 3 weeks, 2 days post op and have had a good loss (30 lbs.) so far. I'm worried that the weight might end up coming off at a really slow rate, but we will see.

I'm a rules girl too! I completely understand paralysis by analysis. In the end, the time doing all the classes, bloodwork and tests proved to be very useful. I really understood what to expect and not much surprised me. There was no way I was going to put myself through major surgery only to break the rules and sabotage my success. It isn't always easy but being a "rules girl" sets you up for doing the diet correctly because one of the rules is to forgive yourself for days when you may not be perfect. If you slip, ya gotta get right back in the game. Don't wait and make a bad day, two or three or ....... I wish you much success in your journey!

First of all, I am a Family Nurse Practitioner. I have worked in the medical field since I turned 18 years old. I have struggled with obesity since my early 20's. When I found out my SIHO insurance would not pay for Gastric Sleeve or any other type of obesity surgery, I was very upset. My friend who is an RN started looking at surgery in other countries. I was not sure about trying surgery anywhere except in the US. We both did a lot of research and I finally settled on somewhere I had already visited before. Puerto Vallarta is where I visited on a Cruise. We arrived at the airport on June 8th, 2015, my best friend Sarah the RN and I were met by the cab service that Dr. Hidalgo and Jerald the p.t care coordinator set up. The very nice man took us to our hotel and told us when our driver would meet us the next day to take us to the Hospital. The hotel was beautiful, our room was very nice. The next day when we got to the CMQ Premier hospital I could not believe my eyes. It was so new and modern I was in shock. In the back of my mind I was scared that it would be some type of a sham. Dr. Hidalgo met us down in the lobby and welcomed us. English was never a problem anytime during my visit there. My surgery was excellent. The hospital was so clean and the staff so friendly I would go back there anytime. For you medical professionals. They even did a "time out" in surgery to make sure who I was, the surgery I was there for, reviewed all my medical HX, allergy's, and asked everyone in the surgery suite if they thought there was any reason the surgery should be canceled. After my surgery if I needed anything, my call light was answered in a minute or less and not by someone though and intercom, but my nurse in person. Never seen that in the US hospital. I was up an walking by late afternoon and did so well I was able to be discharged home the next day after I passed my leak test and ate my first liquids. I was back to work in 3 1/2 weeks. I am doing great and have lost weight at a safe pace. 37 lbs. so far. I eat a very small amount and I am full. Not like before when I tried to diet and always felt hungry. I am taking Vitamins as required after surgery and doing better now 2 mts. after surgery getting enough Protein down. My energy level is so much better. I had terrible GERD before surgery and coughed all the time. I blamed most of it on my Asthma. I am coughing about 75% less now and do now wake up in middle of night with acid in my throat. I believe if I had not had this surgery with a BMI of 49 I would of not been able to live a long life, my BMI is now 43 and I feel great. I have not had any problems at all. If you decide to do this, just make sure you read all their before and after surgery information pages. Try to find someone who also has had this surgery so they can be your surgery buddy you can talk to after. This always helps. I can just not say enough about the TEAM of Professionals, that took care of me. Thank you so much and God Bless You All.

7 months post op and ate a whole grilled cheese
Creekimp13 replied to cassjade's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I ate a whole grilled cheese yesterday. It was terrific. Had some tomato soup, too. Whole wheat bread with reduced fat cheese, and reduced sodium soup. For like a total of 300 calories. Big whoop. We're not birds. We do eventually eat again. Sensible, nutritious food. Oh, and I'm less than four months out...and my doctor and nutritionist are 100% in approval of my lunch. That said...my doctor and nutritionist wanted me eating 1000-1200 calories a day at 3 weeks...so schools of thought vary. I will say I've always felt like my doc has based his recommendations on empirical evidence supporting long term weight loss...rather than the fastest weight loss possible (though I admit, walking advertisements are a hell of a way to advertise your clinic). I'm losing weight and doing well. Horrors... LOL:) -
I stall like that all the time- for two to three weeks, nothing, then 5-6 lbs in a week. I think it's normal. I am 5 lbs from goal and sure as heck staying OFF the scale for awhile or I might go nuts! Great job so far!!!

Friends Questioning if this is the right surgery!
pnw218 replied to hockey66's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
For those who were actually familiar with the different WLS options, they supported the sleeve. I was originally considering the lapband, mainly because it was "reversible". Now I certainly have my doubts. The gal I knew locally who had the sleeve a year ago told me that the lapband was a waste of time. I am soooo glad I listened to her! It would have taken a couple hundred pounds for me to have the bypass. I never even considered it. I haven't seen many post that they have failed with the sleeve. Personally, I love it. Yes, I still miss food but love the sleeve and wouldn't change it at all. Make the decision that is right for you. And don't tell anyone else until afterwards. Who knows what your friends' motivation is. Many people just don't know about the sleeve. My primary dr didn't and I shared some materials with her describing the surgery and the post op diet. She has supported me 100% post-op and will be running labs at three months. Good Luck! -
I’m on day 5 after sleeve and I don’t feel like I’m losing much. How much did everyone lose their first 2 weeks?

Bruising arond incisions???
momcof3 replied to JULIEM81's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the same thing. The yellow bruising is a bruise that is healing. My bruises weren't all gone until about 2 1/2 weeks post op. -
I did a fill every two weeks for 6 weeks then once month . So 4 fills so far since my surgery 1.5.12. I still do not feel restriction. I have lost 39 lbs. Have now started to gain a couple of lbs. Back. My next fill isn't until 5.30.12. Wish it was sooner.

I'm still pre op but 85 pounds is great. When have you been able to lose that in your own? Everyone had stalls. Don't get on the scale every day. Try monthly.

I'm new here, I'm still a young lady who's been overweight since I was.. Mmm, I think 4, ALL MY LIFE, I 've been going through diets like forever, most of my friends are in shape and it feels horrible to be the OBESE one, I hate taking pictures with them, going to the beach, I hate being fat, I can't stand it any more. One really good friend of my mom, she's older than me, had the gastric sleeve surgery, I never knew till I saw her a couple of weeks ago, she looks amazing, I want to get it done too, I asked my mom to ask her about it, well, I already talked to her, she explained almost everything, she went to Mexico with Bariatric pal, well, I signed in right away, I see that they have a couple of doctors they advertise, but I need to hear from patients who have used them or if there's more good surgeons out here that you can recommend. I know I first have to speak with my prime doctor, but I want to bring him more info about this.

Definitely. I think my biggest challenge has been to stay away from those bad slider foods. I have done really well, so far, staying away from them. I don’t buy them for the house, because if I do I—we, meaning my family and I—will eat them. However, in the past couple of weeks an old family friend has returned (she is like a sister to me, an aunt to my children) and she is constantly buying and bringing junk food to the house since her return. I have stalled since she has arrived because I find it difficult to stop myself from eating them. They are so addicting and unfulfilling. I finally—this morning as a matter of fact—gathered them all up and threw them in the trash and I called her and said, “DO NOT bring any more junk, please!” Other than that, it has been smooth sailing. I MAKE time to exercise, even if I have to get up at 4 a.m. I buy healthy foods, stay away from bad carbs. I don’t miss the old greasy, unhealthy foods. Usually, when I eat something unhealthy, it is planned and accounted for and I don’t feel guilty about eating it. Post-op is difficult for anyone. You have to adjust to the restriction and you have more restriction because of the swelling due to surgery, but it will soon pass. You will adjust. You will discover there is a new, healthier you underneath, and you will love it! I truly hope and wish you the best. You can message me anytime if you have questions.

I would say yes. I think they celery is hard to digest because its stringy, but if its cooked and pureed it should be fine. I ate some celery in soup at about 3 weeks post op. It was cooked really soft, and I didn't have any problems.

I lost a total of 18 lbs pre-op, in a span of 6 weeks. After the first three weeks, the NUT asked me to increase my Protein and take it easy, because I had met my first half of the requirements.

What type of machine do you use to purée the tuna and picker juice? I'll need to be doing this in about 4/5 weeks.

I tried three : Calcet creamy bites - texture decent , taste decent but in the end the calorie count was higher than i wanted considering i need to take 2 or 3 a day. Celebrate - not bad but texture a little gritty Bariatric Advantage - I've stuck with these, less gritty than the Celebrate but same calorie, carb level as the Celebrate ones. Several flavors to choose from. I order mine off Amazon.

2 weeks post op and I gained 2lbs today... Im freaking out!
Ah0505 replied to Ana87's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 3 weeks out and I "gained" about 1.5 lbs and haven't lost anything in almost a week. It's not possible that I've gained any real weight, I'm not consuming more than 500 calories a day. I guess I'm just rolling with it, see what happens over time! -
I am three weeks post opp and am wondering how big of pill I can take. Am a little worried to try capsules for the first time post opp.

Humana Select Insurance
Derby replied to Linnielady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi there, I'm a teacher too...in Tampa. My surgeon is Dr. Jessee. She was wonderful. Humana has been great (and that is not something I would say lightly having dealt with them for years)! I had my surgery at Palms of Pasadena and they too were FANTASTIC! My surgery was outpatient and I took about a week to recover. I hope you can get a date during the break...I'll keep my fingers crossed. Good Luck, Deb -
Hurting on day 3
tabula replied to Miranda.Oil.Nurse's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you have any concern I'd definitely call your doctor. I assume you're taking your pain medication? There's a lot of discomfort but with meds shouldn't be intolerable pain, again I'd consult your physician. Important to get that water down in many many many small sips. Also, try to move around, helps get the gas in your system out. I was on a liquid diet the first week, so wasn't "eating" anything. Seems like everyone's recovery is very different. I able to get off pain meds after 3 days but there is definitely discomfort. -
Ok so I'm three days out and I'm always hungry ..... Wtf??? Also I started bleeding and I know it's not my time of the month.... Why?
