    6 Days Out!

Hi all! I had my sleeve done Wed 6/3. I guess it would be called a revision since I had the band in 2007 had problems from 2012-14 which led to an emergency removal surgery in March 2014 cuz the tubing to the port got freakishly entangled in my small intestine causing dr. to remove 20% of the intestines and I also had abdominal lesions. The dr had to cut me open down the middle to get all this fixed up. Fast forward a yr later I was 20 lbs heavier then before the band, swollen ankles, bad lower back and knee pain, and above all about 4 abdominal hernias! I only was able to lose weight if I practically starved myself! I told my dr I was ready to do the sleeve in Feb. He warned me that because of the other stomach surgeries the scar tissue may b too thick and hard to get thru to my stomach laparoscopically and might have to cut me open again! Well thank God my Dr is the best cuz he spent over 2hrs freeing up scar tissue to get to my stomach! Other doctors may have taken the easier route but he didn't! He took the delicate time and managed! I was nauseous the first 3 days, kept heaving and gaging up. I started feeling better got discharged fri Eve but they had to leave the drain coming out of my stomach to drain the bloods and fluids from reopening the scars inside me. I still have incision pain, can't bend, and obviously can't go much anywhere because of the blood bottle hanging from my side (did I mention it bleeds thru the gauze wen I move to much?) just wondering if anyone has left the hospital with a drain? Also wondering if anyone felt or feels hungry still? Good luck to everyone and answers and stories are greatly appreciated! Thanks!????

    4th of July Challenge

@stephh I seem to have dropped off the spreadsheet. My starting weight was 204, my goal is 194. Today I am 197. I guess I need to revise my goal. Let's make it 190. Thanks! Lclemur. How do you keep track of all of us? Were there this many on the last challenge?

    Bypass or sleeve

Yes, I am going through the revision process now. But they are still making me meet all requirements past the 2 year mark and even with it being medically necessary. My sleeve is twisted.... So frustrating

    Secret calories

I was challenged by my surgeon to go 1 month finding secret calories in my diet. I am revising from lap band, ( sorry to see it go) to gastric bypass or sleeve. He said that ppl that revise sometimes don't have success especially after having a lapband. so I am on the hunt. This will help those that have been having trouble with their wt. loss as well. I got out the measuring spoons and my scale. I have been finding secret calories hidden in most of what I eat. I eat healthy and prepare most of my food but weighing and measuring has kept me honest. I have been surprise about tomatoes being 50 calories, I won't go into avocados, perfectly healthy but between whole wheat bread and lite mayo, my oh my. my half and half in the morning. I still use it but measure serving size. salad drsg. I thought I was dieting. Hell no. I have already lost 9 pounds in a week and half. it takes a little more time but I challenge you to a find your secret calories.

    Scared..

Yes, weight loss surgery has some risks. Some of those risk are QUITE serious, including death. However, MOST people don't have those things happen. The "risk math" in my head when I decided to be sleeved was 1-5% chance of serious complication (I was a revision, so higher risk of leaks and bleeding) and very very low risk of death. I was 100% chance of early disability (it was happening already) and I would say very high chance of early death (morbidly obese father dropped dead at age 64 due to massive heart attack). For me, it was pretty obvious that the WLS risks were worth it because I had tried, tried and tried again and again to lose and maintain a weight loss without the sleeve and was not succesful.

    GS Girl, LB Boyfriend Advice?

@@parisshel I asked him about this just yesterday when he was once again complaining about how he couldn't eat any of the meat our friends cooked at a BBQ get-together so he instead made himself a container of popcorn to eat (plenty of nutritional value there ), and he responded with, "That costs money that I don't have right now either" as opposed to getting it removed or revised. I guess what I hate so much is his complaining. He got it done, but not so much by his choice. Now he's stuck with it, and feels in a position where he wants it removed but can't get it removed or loosened because of cost. But he's still not eating healthy and I think even replacing a meal with a Protein shake would benefit him. Yet he seems to have such an aversion to having any of his diet be liquid except Water and tea that he refuses to do that either. I can't make his choices for him. And I try to support and encourage him but he just keeps falling off the wagon. I want to get my own WLS, but I don't want to be around his constant hate of his own! I've already told him that if he wants to eat bad foods he's not going to be able to do so around me because I really want a strong support system. He's so good to me and sometimes I think he's complaining without realizing it. But I'm just not sure what to do on this one.

    Acid reflux/heart burn

My surgeon recommended bypass because sleeve can make reflux unbearable. He has some patients who still chose the sleeve and now he is doing revision to bypass on them a year later. I chose bypass after hearing that.

    Two years out and happy!

What procedure did you have? I'm also a teacher and my revision from band to RNY is on next Monday 15th. Have you ever exercised throughout this process?
  10. For revision I'm awaiting for insurance to give me a date but No I pd cash for the lapband 4 years ago. I went through TRUE RESULTS I do not recommend it better to find a bariatric dr near u. They will sit and take care of u very close than an agency pushin wt loss surgeries. They have no idea what they are talkin about.

    Hello newbie here

What's your MOTIVATION? Is it for your children.. Ur spouse why did u choose this.. Ur your only competition, you know yourself better than anyone else stop cheating on yourself and choose to treat yourself GREAT. Straight up. Real talk that stinkin thinkin is going to put u back to the wt you were before u got the surgery. stick to the instructions or fail. I FAILED. I chose easy foods anything that would go down. The fills got expensive and even then never had a perfect fill. I gained my wt back and more. I chose to have the lap band because I became all kinds of sick w diabetes and my dad had just passed away from diabetes. Now I'm getting a revision because i couldn't practice the instructions so I said so what just gonna slam a yogurt then a strawberry malt anything that would go down. U better not start cheating not even a little.. This first year u will need to learn self control better now than when u gain all ur wt back and more. So I'm gonna get this sleeve now and it will force me to only eat those portions. I'm just be real I was banded 4 years ago I pray y'all make the right choice to treat yourself to healthy instruction just take it one day at a time but don't ever cheat yourself
  12. Sleeve will make it worse i just had second revision i was babd sleeve now bypass. Also i find sleeve harder to recoup than bypass im on day 4 and doing well
  13. I revisioned to Sleeve. It worked well with the damage left from the band. I am doing well and happy with my choice. It would be unfair to compare your loss to mine... I have insulin resistance, PCOS, Menopausal, etc.... but I am still losing.
  14. Great advice! Do what you feel is best for you. I have chosen bypass revision after failed band because of the "head hunger" -- also, if one tends to suffer from reflux, I was told sleeve wouldn't be a wise choice. Just waiting now for my insurance appeal.
  15. I had band, and ended up being one of the high percentage that had complications with it. It really damaged my stomach after slipping and creating masses of scar tissue, and eventually I had to have it removed. I revised to Sleeve, and have been very happy with my choice. I was off work for one week, and had an easy recovery.
  16. Did anyone with band to sleeve revision have really low energy? I am on puree phase and getting at least 50g of protein, sometimes more and taking my multivitamin and B12, but feel very lethargic. I can't really exercise too much, because I just don't have the energy. Wanted to know if this was normal and when it ends.

    Sleeve to Bypass?

I mentioned in my other post about why I am sleeve to bypass. I still have to meet requirements by my insurance company, so you will want to check the revision requirements. There is several sleeve to bypass posts on here. I follow most of them :-) remember lilmissdiva- Irene she had a lapband, then sleeve and converted to bypass because of gerd. She was very active on the forums when we were prepping for surgery. Your dr is probably gonna want to do at EDG to see what is going on with your tummy...
  19. My revision to the sleeve is scheduled for September 7th I'm sure it will be here before we know it.

    GS Girl, LB Boyfriend Advice?

Hey all. I figured this would be the best place to post this and I hope it is, but I have a situation that I'm not sure how to handle. I wouldn't necessarily like any relationship advice, but rather...advice on how I should respond to or support my boyfriend. I am hoping to get the Gastric Sleeve surgery. I have talked to the various people in my life that I would tell about the surgery and sought their support; these include my parents, a very select few close friends, and my boyfriend. They are all willing to be supportive and I am grateful, but I seem to be encountering an issue with my boyfriend that I'm not sure how to handle. A brief history: he and I were high school sweethearts, together about 3.5 years before we broke up in college, then we didn't talk for 5 years, we reconnected about 2 years ago and were off and on due to a lot of history to get over, but we've been ON for over a year now. In the time that we weren't together or speaking, he had gotten the LAPBAND procedure, so when we renewed our friendship and relationship, I was really impressed with the weight that he had been able to get off. Back in high school he had gotten up to over 300 pounds and since I've been with him he's been in and out of the ~280 range. So. He's had his lap band for at least a few years. And he hates it. HATES IT. He longs to be able to eat a hamburger with a bun, or any meat at all! He wants to get the band completely removed. Not unfilled, not replaced with a different WLS, just removed. And since I've talked to him about wanting to get WLS myself, it makes me worry even more about him. The thing is, he got the band because weight wasn't coming off no matter what he ate, didn't eat, drank, didn't drink, or how much he exercised. But from how he's explained it, his doctor TOLD him he HAD to get the surgery. It wasn't his original thought and choice. So I've told him that I'm worried about him getting his band removed and it has caused quite the fight between us! He is upset with me for not having faith in him to be able to lose weight and keep it off without the band. A couple of our friends get mad at me too and hit me with the, "you wouldn't still love him if he got fat?" accusation. It's really upsetting. Of course I would love him if he were fatter, I have before! But even back in high school I had talks with him about his weight because I wanted to have a future and a family with him and I wanted him to be around for that and his health was a concern for me! If he gets his band out, that concern becomes alarmingly large in my mind. I've heard what he wants to eat when he gets his band out. And he might say he wouldn't eat a burger every day, but even once a week is too much when he doesn't put in the exercise to burn all of those calories even from one bad day a week. If the pounds weren't coming off before, I don't know what makes him think this time will be any different. Again, he's upset I don't have faith in him. But the thing is, I WANT to have faith in him, but I seriously CAN'T when I have nothing to base this on that he has been able to do it on his own before. His eating habits have always been terrible -- his family rarely ever cooks, then or now, and usually eats out for almost every meal, so he developed those habits. Even now, he'll get that large order of chili cheese tater tots with extra chili and extra cheese from Sonic and eat the whole thing. But now it takes him longer and some bites he has to re-chew and re-swallow two or three times or he'll throw the bite up completely and try again with a new bite. He uses the excuse that "bad food just goes down easier" and he can't eat most meats or even salads (something I've read as being an issue for many band patients), but if he "had the band out, he could actually be able to eat healthier, as in Proteins and salads as a meal". I asked him how I could really have faith in him to do it on his own when I have NEVER seen him do so and he said, "Just because I never choose to show people that I can do it, doesn't mean I can't." At this point in one of our fights, I told him he sounded like a total food addict. "I CAN STOP ANYTIME I WANT TO." But I'm worried that he can't. He's still paying off the band and wants it out. I've tried to talk to him about a revision instead, but he doesn't want to hear it. Since HE didn't choose the surgery, it feels pretty clear he didn't change him mental game and is still a "fat guy" in the brain. He wants the food he can't eat. He still cheats his band and eats bad food. It isn't that I wouldn't love him if he gained weight again, but now that I'm trying to turn my weight and my life around, I still want him to be in it with me. But I don't want him to learn the hard lesson... I don't want to see him fail with weight loss and get miserable if he gets super overweight again and struggle to pay for a third surgery to get a WLS that he should have just done during the second surgery as a revision. So what do I do? What can I say to him when he doesn't want to hear my suggestions? How can I have faith with him when I have such a high percentage in mind that he will fail...even when I wish that he could do it solo? Sorry this turned out so long, so thank you to anyone who actually reads it and replies... But with a big problem comes a big post!

    Acid reflux/heart burn

I had a very serious life long issue with bile and acid reflux. I was told by my GI dr that the sleeve was absolutely off limits for me and I had the bypass. I can honestly say that I have not had a single episode since surgery and went from taking 8 pills a day to control the GERD to ZERO pills the day after surgery. I do know people who have had mild reflux and had the sleeve with no issues but I know many more who have had no reflux and developed issues after the sleeve as well as people who had mild reflux that got significantly worse after the sleeve and ended up revising to bypass. My advice would be do as much research as possible and go with your gut instinct and surgeons suggestion.
  23. I just had a adjustment Friday bc I was having reflux so bad that it put me in the ER they did a ctscan and found that my esophagus was dilated. So my surgeon wants to do a revision and he said the sleeve is the best way to go.
  24. had my sleeve 10/2012 and since then gotten pregnant twice. before I got pregnant I lost 115lbs. now I seem to not have any restriction..i barely feel full. im barely loosing. my question is are drs very strict on switching patients over? do u have to have a good reason tow revise, is having no restriction good enough? how easy is it..i don't want them to deny me...my apt not til July 8th, that's when im gonna mention it. I got down to 185 before pregnancy and im at 239 right now. I just feel the sleeve doesn't like me anymore...and I have 130lbs to lose still...also if u have any info on the bypass, I appreciate it!
