Hi , I am almost a year out and down 135+lbs. I had a tough go as a sleever , but learned what to eat and how to adjust. Along with my sleeve I had a hiatal hernia operation. I thought this would solve my heartburn and acid reflux issue. Last few weeks heartburn has been creeping up again and rather painful. Any advice it thoughts? Zantac ? Milk? Tums? Help!!!

Brand new! Just had my surgery 04/23/13
KayCTheNewMe posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello everyone! My name is Kaila and I am brand new to this forum (actually any forum) and I am definitely looking for some help with this journey. I will start a little about myself. I grew up the majority of my life in New Hampshire, am currently a proud army wife and mom of an almost 3 year old boy. I work as an office assistant and also as a home sales consultant with Seacret. I've spent the majority of my life taking care of others that it wasn't hard to forget about myself, leading to my unhealthy diet and with stress and anxiety, an addiction to food. After moving to Colorado I gained a lot more weight in a short period of time because trying to breathe in this elevation was so difficult it took away my physical activity that I had in our other home. Within 3 months I became prediabetic, hypertensive, and had high cholesterol. I had my surgery and all my preop appointments at Evans Community Hospital at Fort Carson. My doctor was Dr. Mayfield. He was amazing. Very personable and straight forward. He didn't sugar coat anything, but definitely made you comfortable to talk to. I had a month of pre op appointments including mutliple nutrition appointments, wellness (metabolism testing), bariatric surgery group counseling and psychological evaluations. Going through the appointmetns were really important and informative. My doctor was very lenient on the pre op diet. I ate reasonably and cut my calories down by half, but I still enjoyed my cravings occasionally. The day before surgery I ate up to 1:30 pm (only 2 very small meals concidering my Vitamins definitely helped minimize my diet, so I definitely reccomend takin them before surgery for at least 2 weeks) and they provided me a magnesium drink that cleans out your system. At that point I could not have anymore solid food. Day of surgery was a bit tough phsycailly. I just remember waking up and all I could say was pain and shake my head. I spent 2 nights and 3 days admitted. They try to make you walk right away, but I didn't walk until the 2nd day. I was very much under the anestisia for a lot longer than I wanted to be. In order for me to go home I needed to drink 4 - 5 oz of clear Fluid within 1 hour. The first time I tried to drink it I became really sick. Eventually I was able to drink 8 oz. within 3 hours, so they let me go home. My problem right now is that I am on the full liquid diet, but I cannot injest more than 35 oz a day, and only clear fluids. Its painful to drink still ( 5 days post op) and I can't really drink any full fluids yet The first day I tried I ended up in the hospital again dehydrated. Has anyone else had such a hard time drinking after surgery? All I keep hearing is that the 1st week is the worst, but people I've read their information or seen youtube are drinking full liquids like champs the first week, so it makes me feel a little broken. Im also having a really hard time with commercials. If I see Little Caesars pizza one more time I may snap. I have also had such a heightened sense of smell. I could smell my grandmothers plain toast while she was upstairs. It seems like it's making it more difficult. Also, walking is increditbly difficult. There's always a sharp or dull (it changes) spot under my left breast where my stomach would be, but when I walk it becomes more painful. Should you push through it or take it easier? Any advice would be wonderful. I am definitely open to anything that would make my life a lot more comfortable right now! -
Pain beneath incision
roundisashape replied to Justoperated's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wasn't cleared to do anything abdominal until I was cleared to do weights at the 6 week mark, but for about the first 3-4 weeks I had pain in a similar spot. Freaked me out a bit, until the surgeon explained that they come in at an angle and the "inside hole" wasn't in the same place as the "outside hole". Still worth calling the doc and seeing what they say, just in case something weird is going on! Good luck to you -
Weight gain post surgery. Help!
jongetsfit replied to lauren66's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Totally normal, don't panic! I lost a quick 13 the first two weeks then was stuck for like 10 days and then started started seeing a few lbs come off. I literally had my 4 week check in with my surgeon today and he said he didn't even start looking for real loss until this point. It boils down to 3 things. 1) hit your hydration and Protein target. 2) stay off the scale 3) trust the process. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
August 2014 sleevers? Let's chat!
dreamgirl45 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, all! After about a month of waiting for my insurance company to sign off on my surgery, I finally got approved this week. I honestly cannot believe it. I've already competed psych counseling, nutrition counseling, blood tests, EKG, etc. I start my two-week pre-op liquid diet July 28 and get sleeved Aug. 11. For the most part, I have family support. At work, those closest to me have said things like, "You're not large enough. You don't need to do that. Please reconsider," to "How long will you be out? I better get in my vacation time in before you go." One co-worker looks at me in a sad, troubled, puzzled expression when she sees me and explained that her neighbor had WLS and it was a bad experience. So, it's quite a challenge to share my news with people who don't get "it." And that is okay. It is not for them to "get." This is for ME! Sorry, for that virtual self psych-analysis. I must admit that I am a little nervous about surgery (I don't like any kind of hospital procedures), but I'm eager to start living a healthier life. Would love to hear from anyone else getting sleeved in August, what your chief concerns are and where you're located. My surgeon is at UTSW in Dallas. -

5 Weeks post op incision bleeding
rebcal replied to kittykatja85's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Happened to me.. is it dark blood or sort of light and liquidy? Called surgeon right away and he told me it was normal and happened around the same time as you 4-5 weeks post op. Definitely call them tho! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I'm new to this group. This is my first post. I had my VSG done end of October last year and have lost a ton of weight. I started at 244 with the 2 week pre-op diet and I am now at 189. My problem is I've been having abdominal pain and diarrhea. The abdominal pain can be as bad a labor pains at times and can make me almost pass out. I'm not sure if this is the result of what I'm eating (or not eating since I feel like I'm not able to eat as much as I was a couple months ago, protein that is), or is it something else? I was at the ER a few weeks ago and they did a CT scan which said intestinal wall thickening, so they put me on Flagyl antibiotic. I'm a nurse so I know this is not normal. Any ideas on what might be going on? Melissa

Pre-Op Diet Effects & Questions
Heathermarie0407 replied to dljonline1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just hang in there guys! I seem to remmber that the pre op diet got much better on day five. I also drank 100 oz of water on my pre op diet. I think some of the reasons doctors torture us with this crazy pre op diet are... They take the guess work out of dieting. There is no room for mistakes, if you follow this diet you will be ready for surgery. The protien shakes are very low fat, important to shrink your liver. They want to make sure you can stick to it, after surgery you will have to stick to a liquid diet for weeks. They also want you stomach to be empty in the day of surgery. -
Too few calories
James Marusek replied to Kirbykendall06's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your calories are the total of the calories in your meals combined with the calories in your Protein shakes or other protein supplements. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. So generally forget about counting calories but make sure you meet the protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein Shakes. -
I am 3 days post op and today I started my full liquid diet. I have to say that the first day and a half was hard and after that I am feeling really well. I was able to get all my required water down, my clear protein and today I am eating exactly how much my nut told me to. I am not feeling stuffed...nor do i want to even try to overdo it and see what it feels like. I know that that the first month is important in keeping the band from slipping so i am not even going to try. I am trying not to get on the scale until my 2 week check up -but so far i feel really good. I am a little hungry and my stomach does curse me out for not eating - but i don't have that "oh my god! if i don't eat something, I am goign to die!!!" This has been a good experience so far and I am looking forward to the next step when I can start eating real food (not until a month from now) but like I said - I am following the instructons to the T and not even trying to cheat or "try it out". Just happy to be on this side finally and know that my healthy active life has begun

1 Day Post Op and feeling good!
Aries Twin replied to Aries Twin's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you all for your comments. I am almost a week out from surgery and I am down nearly 13lbs. I can't believe my eyes when I get on the scale. I am feeling great and my only regret is not doing this sooner! I am a little tired of the protein shakes but I still have about another week before I can progress to the next food stage so I am staying the course. If guy you guys have any suggestions on how to get around these overly sweet shakes please let me know. Thanks for the support everyone. So happy to be a part of this forum. -
I think you are so brave for taking such a big step so young in life! I'm 21 and just got sleeved 6 weeks ago. I've been fat my entire life and a major injury at age 12 put me in similar shoes you're in. Only you know what you need and what's right for you. One of the most common regrets I've seen is "I wish I had had WLS sooner". You won't have to worry about that. You're taking control NOW. good for you

I don't know what type of Tricare you have but my first appointment with my primary care doctor (addressing weight loss surgery possibilities) was August 19, 2013 and my surgery date is January 16, 2014. I have Tricare Prime. All I had to do was: (in no particular order) 3 dietician appointments, exercise physiologist, 5 documented support groups, information session, sleep study, psychological evaluation and I was approved two weeks after my initial doctor appointment. As far as showing failed attempts of weight loss programs, all I had to do was write them down. I hope all works out for you. I've been on a 20 year diet it seems and my weight loss surgery journey has taken me 4.5 months. Good luck to anyone who reads this!!!

GAAAH! I only have 8 weeks to prep!
happymama2014 replied to roundisashape's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That was exactly what I was feeling and I have specific Vitamin requirements through Kaiser, couldnt find everything, had a small health scare then had a small meltdown. Decided there was WAY to much going on to get my surgery 10/2 so I changed it to 11/6. Now I wish I had not changed it, that last week has gone by so SLOW...but I do have one month to finish up things. I need to get my house in order, will updated, life insurance in order, a few more supplements, a few more Protein shakes and 2 more Vitamins. I have plenty of clothes I just need to get out what will be comfy enough to come home in and walk around the hospital...I lost my mind when I was 2 weeks out. I am hoping for more peace this time:) -
I'm about 4 hours south of Nashville. It's sooo nice here now. But in another week or so, it's supposed to drop back down into the 20's so you are coming at the perfect time!! Have fun at the concert!

Help! Some lady told me I only have to pre op 3 day?
AvaFern replied to lealor's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Technically you don't need a 2 week pre-op diet. I only needed one week and my friend's dad wasn't even put on one at all. Three days of Fluid only is enough to make sure your liver isn't too large for surgery and realistically with a low BMI your liver is probably just fine with a healthy diet right before surgery. That being said, I'm glad I did the week long liquid diet beforehand purely because I read a story about how a woman went out and binge ate before her surgery and they ended up cracking her liver. That made an hour surgery 6 hours and had major health implications. I was sufficiently terrified to mostly not cheat during that week (I had one day where I had some Smart puffs and something else small). My friend's father though went out for a big Italian meal the night before his surgery because his surgeon didn't make him go on any kind of pre-op diet and he was just fine. Therefore, depending upon each place and the information the woman had on the phone, she may not have been as misinformed as it seems. All surgeons seems to have different rules. -
I had been hovering right around 250 for some time (since early December). 250 is an important "milestone" weight for me for a couple of reasons; first, I simply never thought I could get my weight down to 250 and keep it there (let alone lose MORE). Second, for adults the weight limit on a lot of things is 250 pounds; for instance, I had to buy an ultra-heavy duty office chair for my computer because at 330 lbs I literally destroyed Office Depot-type cheapo chairs too fast, so it made sense to invest in a heavy duty, high quality chair. But my weight "stuck" around 250 and wouldn't budge... at one point during the holidays it bounced back as high as 254. My gf tried to convince me that it was Water weight, but my glass half empty mind just "knew" that 250 was as low as I go and now I was going to start climbing again. Well, without any real change of diet or exercise habits, I've started losing again, and am now down to around 246. Hopefully this trend will continue to my Hawaii vacation at the end of February; I don't want to look COMPLETELY disgusting in swim trunks! Does anyone else have the same experience where your body seems to hold on to weight for a couple weeks, and then with no real change in diet or exercise habits, abruptly start losing again? I can't figure it out; in this case I know that it was literally NOTHING I changed in my diet and exercise habits (still moderate but not perfect with my diet, still utterly bad about exercise), so it must have been some internal, metabolic thing!

Another stall broken...
SouthernSleever replied to ouroborous's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
That's awesome that you are losing again and an encouraging post to read. My body seems to lose 5lbs or so in a week, stall stall, gain a little then start losing again. I'm not sure what our bodies are doing but sounds like things work out in the end. Btw I seriously doubt you look disgusting at all in your swim trunks. -
Is this Normal? Advice Please!
P.chan replied to P.chan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Tamie, thanks for your reply. But my doctor said to be on liquids and Soups are fine for the first week. For the first 5 days I was on very light soups...only last night, i made this sort of thick potato soup. I believe my Proteins are coming from my soymilk, milk and yogurt. I drink about 4-5 glasses of milk each day..plus 2-3 smoothies. Can you tellme what your eating time table looks like? thanks so much -
14 weeks... the 100 day mark in sight..the 3 mo. checkup...52 lbs gone..invincable!

b 12 was 1221. I was told to take it 2 less days a week if I wanted to continue drinking the enhanced waters (which is one of my treats seeing I cannot have carbonated beverages).
