    Any Regrets?

I got sleeved in early February 2015 and no regrets. However I have a feeling that people that had WLS and have regrets don't tend to frequent this board. I don't think that is the particular demographic that is represented here. My co-worker had the band 6 years ago. The sleeve was not an option then. She has lost the weight and kept it off but does not recommend the band to anybody. She gets stuff stuck and still vomits periodically. Her sister had by-pass 10 years ago and she wishes she had that instead. She would love to revise to the sleeve but has no band slippage so insurance won't cover. She is happy she had surgery just not that surgery. Her daughter had the band also 6 years ago and never lost weight. The doctor refused to do any more fills until she had a psych visit. She refused to have one. I bet she has gained another 50 or 75 pounds. She never should have had any weight loss surgery. She was not ready for it. She was also only 20 years old and very immature for her age. . She would eat, throw up, eat more. She never did the liquid diet pre-op and started eating solids too quick after surgery. She would eat slider foods and drink lots of alcohol. She did have a psych eval prior to surgery and "passed" it. Her cousin had the band 5 years ago and had the band removed a couple of years later since she never lost weight and then couldn't stand the thought of something foreign in her. Yes, most of the family has weight issues. It is a tool. Do your research, take your time and make sure that you are willing to do the work. It will take work and planning. It is not a magic wand. For me it has been well worth it. However it is not for everybody. Your choice in which WLS is also a personal thing.
  3. That's what my bariatric surgeon said this morning after looking at my esophogram. When I asked her about how thin my esophagus was per a comment made by the technician, she laughed and said that they're not used to seeing a normal esophagus. Most of the time because of band tightness, the esophagus swells. Because I am fortunate enough to have no Fluid in the band, mine is normal. I also showed the doctor my 'golf ball' and she said that needed to be revised for sure. So after the summer, I get a port revision to a lower profile version and she will tuck it under the muscle. I will be happy to have it gone. I tried on a dress yesterday and couldn't buy it because the port was really noticible. Happy days and I'm a happy lady thanks to my lapband.

    VSG revision to Gastric Bypass

I am in the process of getting some tests done. Had endoscopy less then a year ago. Getting gastric emptying scan today. Then I just need 1phych, 1nutrition and a upper GI series. All are scheduled next week. Hoping to have the surgery done end of June beginning of July. Just worried about insurance. Ugh. My GERD is sooo bad! I am on 5 meds because of it. Was sleeved April 2012 and now need a revision to bypass.

    Just sick and discouraged

All I can say is that it gets better. I had revision surgery from lap-band to RNY on April 29th. First 3-4 weeks was not great at all. Everything I ate made me feel sick. But you can get thru it. I decided pre-surgery that I wouldn't weigh myself more than once a week. And I've pretty much stuck to that and it really helps because you are better able to see the results.

    Where to go in mexico

I had complications with my gastric plication from OCC in Mexico (nausea, not surgeon error), and I also had to have the lap band that they placed during my plication revision removed in an emergency surgery here in the states (not due to surgeon error though). I saved up and now I'm getting sleeved here in the United states, but I have heard good things about Mexicali bariatric center. With that being said, the care I recieved at OCC was very good, and the facility was clean! And Dr Ortiz has great bedside manner, the sleeve patients when I was down there were practically bouncing out of bed right after surgery! Just email them and theyll get info to you ASAP
  7. I had the revision in August 2013 and lost 30lbs pretty quickly but the weight loss has stopped all together and it's frustrating. I lost 135lbs from the band and got pregnant gained some weight and I'm still 60lbs from where I want to be but the weight isn't moving! I thought this was just me the sleeve is a much slower way for me to lose weight but I know much safer way since I had a lot of vomitting with the band. I'm not eating bad foods, I exercise reguarly and the weight isnt' going anywhere....
  8. I had my revision six weeks ago. I hit a stall around week 4 for two weeks. I lost 3 lbs this last week putting me at 30lbs lost so far. Stick to protein, don't graze, and get your water in. The scale will move.
  9. Good Morning, I had my revision the end of August 2014 started at 227 and I'm now at a stand still at 193! I'm really at a lost I haven't lost anymore weight I have been steady toggling between 189-194 I can't get out of this slump and my surgery anniversary is fast approaching! I'm not sure if this count as slow are just stopped?

    Get my band out

I got my band in Dec 09 and I lost 40+lbs but then nothing. Band was tight bc like u I would puke probably 3-4 meals a week. At 211 I just felt like I failed though much healthier than 260. I went to Mexico for a revision to gastric sleeve. The sleeve surgery was 5k and I paid an extra $500 for band removal. Best decision! I am 6 weeks or so out and down to 186 pounds. Good luck whatever u decide!
  11. Seasoned sleevers, what was your weight loss like? I have read several posts where people have talked about slow weight loss after revision. I know our metabolisms are slower already since we had the band, but I haven't really lost any weight in the last week or so, just 3 was post op. Just curious as to others experiences.... Also, I noticed a bump under one portion of my incision where they removed my port. Last week, the entire incision was a little hard, now it is just at one end. Did anyone experience this? How long until it went away?
  12. Hi everyone! I was banded in 2012 and now going to start the process to be sleeved. When I was banded aetna had me go through a 3 month process . Do I have to do all the same things again or is it quicker.

    Before and After Pics

hello!! Congrats on you weight loss u look great how long u had surgery? I had my surgery dec 4th 2014. The first surgery I had was rny and I had complications (extreme pain) because my intestines weren't put right. My surgeon had to revise to a sleeve on March 16th 2015. So I had two surgeries and had to go through all the stages 2x. I am 8 pounds from goal in six months due to this. It's been tough but totally worth it in every way!!
  14. I got my band in 2005. Lost 85 lbs the first year and then had horrible reflux issues. They took out the fluid and I yoyo dieted for 8 yrs. I finally decided to have revision surgery. I never liked the idea of bypass so when I heard about the sleeve I was all in. I had my surgery on 4/30 and I am so glad I did. The doc said my band was a mess and ended up pulling my stomach out in pieces. He said my stomach was close to closing off. Very scary. I can't begin to tell you how much better I feel with that band gone. No reflux, no more vomiting, no more stuck. And my hunger is gone, it never was with the band.

    Advice

Hi first congrats on your choice on being healthy, discuss your concerns with your doctor, I had the option if both procedures but after going discussing my concerns with my surgeon and husband we all decided on gastric bypass , I had never had surgery and only wanted to have it once and get the best results . I. Did not want any revision do to ulcers or anything else . I am happy and healthy with my decision and just had a tummy tuck with muscle repairs done to address the loose skin and I am feeling like a million bucks . I use food as energy now . I don't us food for comfort , stress or boredom . I have replace stress and emotional eating with exercise and better communication skills will my family and friends and it works . You do not want yo hi through this procedure without making the necessary like changes. You got this I would suggest the RNy.

    At the beginning

I had mine in revised on 3/10/15 and have no regrets! I go today for my 3 month follow up....very interested to see how my blood work is. I feel great and have been averaging 10-12lbs loss each month. The only food I can't tolerate is oatmeal and cream of wheat ...both on the approved list but no luck. Good luck!

    Complete unfill...now what?

I just had to have 2.2 taken out of my band and I'm really concerned because now I feel there is no restriction. I was at 9.5 and doing really well. Started to feel like my portions were getting a little too big so I went in this past Friday and got .5 which proved a bit too much as I had trouble swallowing the Water they gave me so .2 came out and that seemed to be ok...while I was on liquid and mush food. As soon as I ate solid food on Monday I had acid reflux and chest pains. So back I went yesterday. She took out the 2.2...or rather it came out on it's own she said I was very irritated (the band I guess). So this puts me I guess around 7.6. I'm scared. I don't want to start gaining again. I did have it in my mind to follow the post op plan - liquids to mushy to solid over the next week and then be able to go back in and get filled again. I've not done as well I've been doing since I first had my band in 2009! I never lost more than 50lbs. I gained 20 or so back when I didn't have insurance and couldn't get fills. I finally get on a roll and BAM. I was also considering revision from band to sleeve. I think I will move forward with that. If the band can't be filled enough to be effective then it's useless to me. Right? I also need to have my gallbladder out apparently. I haven't really had a bad attack but they did an ultrasound of it and the Doctor said it would have to come out eventually. I'd rather get it all done at once...which is why I have been waiting trying to decide if I want to try for the revision. I have to go through the program (6 weeks) and THEN my insurance may or may not cover it. I also have to spend $300+ to go through the program. But maybe it's worth trying.
  19. I am a band-to-bypass revision patient. I got banded in November of 2007 and had it removed in December 2014. I was such a mess that my doctor waited 4 months to do my bypass (04.08.2015) and I am SO glad I did the revision! My surgeon said that he likes to go with bypass for previously banded patients because of the trauma caused by banding. With the sleeve the new stomach is banana-shaped whereas with bypass a brand new pouch is created out of healthy tissue. It is incredible what a difference bypass is from banding. I was sick pretty much the entire time I was banded and I never could eat properly. Now I have what I was hoping the band was going to do for me; a tool that I am using to help me redesign my eating habits and live a healthy lifestyle! Of course ultimately the decision is up to you but I can tell you I am 100% happy with my progress so far. I actually feel like I can do things right this time!
  20. There are a great deal of us here that have LapBand to Sleeve or Band to Bypass revisions. Most everyone I have seen post are glad that they did the revision. Did you not lose at all with the band?
  21. Hello! I'm new to this site. I had Lapband surgery in 2005, with no results. I'm thinking about having it removed and possibly getting a different surgery. I'm not sure what would be best for me to look into! Anyone with a similar scenario? Thanks! -Amanda
  22. Was banded in May of 2011, I lost a total of 10LBS yep that was it, never been happy with it. Visited my Doctor recently who suggested that I go for the Gastric Bypass and have the band removed. After speaking with him I decided to do some research and I found his site and I really like it, real people going through the same things as me. I really enjoy reading what everyone has to say and it has helped me make my decision to go for the Gastric Bypass. I'm at the beginning stages of approval, but thankfully my insurance doesn't really require much for me to have the revision. I'm glad that I found this site and I'm excited to follow everyone's success. I don't have a surgery date yet, but it shouldn't be to long.
  23. Hi there! I had my band in May 2011 and just had my band removed and revision to sleeve on May 29th in one surgery. Went great!!! Port was twisted and they had to dig it out so I'm a little more sore at that incision site....but not bad. Surgery took about 3 hrs, spent 2 nights in hospital. The worst part was that I couldn't pee so the nurses had to cath me a few times...Pain was manageable. No nausea...or complications. So glad I did it. I'm now down about 30 lbs since my preop physical. So happy!

Will we have to low carb for ever?

I did not know that! My dr, basically tells us that we can eat what we want , just eat all a serving of Protein first, which as most know, doesnt leave much room for else! I do eat my Proteins before anything else that i usually dont have any room left. But the few local gals i know that have had the procedure done said they have not done a special diet. I was hard core atkins before i had my surgery and it worked pretty well, I had a lap band in at the time, for 10 years actually and I lost more when i would atkins than with the band itself. The band wouldnt let me eat meat so eventually, I decided to have the revision done and get the sleeve. I really did not realize that i would be on low carb the rest of my life. Its a little sad but too late now ESPECIALLY if i want to see some results. Makes me feel like i should have done more research and just gotten my LB taken out instead of the full on sleeve procedure.
  25. There are just as many complications with the sleeve as with bypass, they are just different. And if you have a good surgeon, your risk goes down considerably. My surgeon says he has several patients who chose to do the sleeve despite his warnings about reflux and now they have come to him to get a revision to bypass. Also, omeprazole is not meant to be taken long term. It is supposed to be taken for 6 months at the most to help heal reflux. If your reflux is not healed after 6 months it is more serious and may be necessary to treat with surgery. Popping pills is not a solution, it's a bandaid. And in my opinion, I had this surgery to help me fix problems with my health, not create new ones or worsen old ones. That's why I chose bypass.
