I have a few questions if anyone can help me: 1. After the procedure do you always feel hungry? 2. After you lost the weight do you have to pay for another surgery to remove the band? 3. After the weight lose do you have an excess of skin and need to get a body lift? Thanks in advance to anyone and everyone that can help me with these questions. Dave

Hello ...... 36.6 BMI
OnTheWay to Thin replied to david6789's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Dave once you get to the correct fill level after a band, then you are supposed to be satisfied or full with about 1/2 - 3/4 cup of food. This is how you are able to lose weight, but you have to follow the rules. The band is made to be a lifetime implant, and many have had them for a long time, but sometimes there are complications where they have to be removed, that percentage is pretty small though. On the excess skin issue everyone is different, it depends on your age and the elasticity of your skin, one advantage to the band is you lose slowly and this allows your skin to retract better than very very rapid weight loss such as you have with a bypass surgery. I believe I remember reading that about 20% of band weight loss paitients need a plastic surgery after they are at their goal weight. Hope this helps. Debbie -

Hello all, my name is Gloria and I just had my first consult for Lap Band surgery yesterday! I've been researching (and saving) for this procedure for as long as I could remember. A little bit about me, I'm 28 single with no children. I'm in school full time attempting to obtain a nursing degree. I also work full time as a receptionist. I've been over weight my entire adult life and I only have myself to blame. I tried many fad diets with no success and I tried the "hard way" diet and exercise when I was in my early 20's and did have minor results only to gain it all back (and then some) after going through a job loss and depression. At present day, I'm at the heaviest I've EVER been (5'0 250lbs) and can't seem to lose more than 10 pounds and keep it off! I haven't had a full panel blood work done in over 5 years so I don't know if I have any underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or hypothyroidism. My blood pressure fluctuates but usually is borderline. I recently became insured through Aetna but unfortunately my policy excludes all bariatric surgery, just my luck! Apparently the company I work for didn't purchase the plan but the center I went to found a small loophole, sort of; Hiatal hernia. I'm now scheduled for an EGD on October 1st and per True Results, if they find I have a hiatal hernia, the total cost of the surgery gets discounted about $4000! I know it sounds horrible but I really hope I have one! I had an EKG, PFT, physical exam and lab work done yesterday and aside from the upcoming egd I was told I could have surgery as soon as the 4th. It all seems to be moving so fast, I'm VERY excited but a bit apprehensive. I've never been put under and I'll have that first experience with the egd. I'm also curious about other pre-op clearances I was told I needed by one doctors office weren't brought up yesterday, mainly a psych evaluation and sleep apnea study. Are these not needed for "cash patients"? When it comes time for surgery, how many days should I request off from work, just a receptionist here. I'll have to keep in mind I'm in school too and will have to make arrangements there too because of stairs. Any advice from those who've recently had it done. Pain felt when you wake up on a scale from 1-10? I appreciate ANY feedback, comments, questions or concerns. Anyone else from Houston, please add me or keep in touch!

A couple of days ago I passed another Mini-Goal. This one was real important to me. It was passing the lowest weight I had ever previously attained on a diet. For me, that weight was 212lbs. The last time I was there was after about 10 months on Nutrisystem, it was a real struggle to attain at the time and obviously one I was not able to maintain. My second lowest dieting weight was 215 and that was a few years ago while doing Atkins. Again it was about 8-10 months to get there and didn’t last long. This journey on LapBand and taken me about 4.5 months and feels so much better than anything before. Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t been a cakewalk – but it has certainly been a more rewarding program day to day. Next Mini-Goal is to get under 200, then its just 15lbs to get to my main goal of 185 and a normal BMI.

Need Lap Band Buddy / Mentor Need Help Getting back on Track
MommaBurks posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hello there, I was banded 2 years today I and I feel like the biggest failure! I lost 50+ pounds in 4 months and then found out that my birth control did not work for me and that I was pregnant with my 3rd child. Prior to finding out I had gotten a fill and during the same appt they gave me 2 unfills and it was still tight within a week or so of that so when I found out I was pregnant I had the majority of what was left unfilled. Needless to say I gained a lot of weight during my pregnancy. As long as I stayed under what I started at before surgury I considered that a plus. Well here I am almost a year and 2 fills later (which is a whole other issue) and nothing has changed. My eating habits are horrible and I feel like I have no support what so ever. My husband gives me a hard time yet all he wants to do is eat out and not exactly at the best choices. I am so frustrated I need help, I am going to have to do this on my own though, I feel like I have this tool that is supposed to help me and I have no means (insurance or money) to maintain it at the moment. I would like to lose the same 50 pounds by the end of December but don't even know where to start. I am about 245 give or take. I need to do this for myself but i just don't know how. After surgery I had insurance for my fills and I had a membership at the Y and was using it regularly. Now I have none of that. If anyone is willing to help me get back on track any support and advice would be great. Thanks, Frustrated Momma, MommaBurks:confused: -
Well bandsters I started, Jillian Micheal's Body revolution on Saturday, July 27th. My goal is to be at my ideal body weight of 132 by the end of this 90 day training session. I am also going to continue to work out with my trainer 3 days a week for a while. I find it so addictive and difficult to break up with him. He is so motivational and pushes me to do more. My other goal is to cut back on training sessions by the end of this session with my DVD's so I will have more money for clothes. I will log my progress here weekly, so stay tuned. ( I am posting this so I will be accountable, out there for the world to see) Starting weight: 140 Waist: 30" Bust:( upper chest) 36" Below Bust: 33" Lower Abdomen: 36 2/8" Hips: 36 6/8" Thighs: (Largest Part) 21" Calf: 13 7/8 " Upper Arm: 11 7/8 " I will do my measurements and weight every Sunday for the next 90 days to follow my progress.

I was beginning to wonder if I even HAD a sweet spot! But 3 days ago was the magic fill!!! YaY restriction! Happy dancing (((_l_)))!!!! Will I actually keep the weight off this time? Really nervous about that. I am too afraid to give up a lot of my clothes and still have up to my size 20's in my closet. Guess I will at least move them to the garage. Is it just me or does anyone else have a fear their band will erode or slip and they will be back to square one?

Almost to goal and FINALLY at my sweet spot!

First off, congrats on your doing so well, you should be very proud of yourself. As far as your mentioned fears, I think most of us feel this way. We have had ups and downs so many times in our lives fighting this weightloss battle that we never really get the fear completely out of our heads. I received advice from one of my doctors regarding clothes. As I was losing weight and I went into my doctors office for a follow up in a suit that was definitly too big. He looked at me and said, "I think its time to get rid of all your too big clothes. Keeping them will only give you a ready made wardrobe to fit back into. You would be surprised just how much motivation you will find to keep losing if your clothes start getting tight again and you have nothing bigger to fit into." I have gotten rid of all of my fat clothes as I lose. I have family who can use them so I box them up immediately and send them off. Even with the clothes gone though there is still the fear. I dont think I will ever be over it entirely. But then again a little bit of fear can be helpful in motivating us to work hard. You have come this far, keep up what you have been doing and celebrate your successes! -
Feel like I've won the lottery....the MEGAMILLIONS. What will you do with your winnings?

Thank you for this and all the information I find on this site. I'm awaiting final insurance approval. Once I get to the actual surgery I will be so prepared with what to expect and knowledge of some of the typical struggles. I'm trying to get some sanity in my diet now, and so looking forward to winning at weight loss. I want to fully live my life and stop hibernating because I don't want to be seen by anyone. -
Needing Guidance from experienced bandsters!!
DebLPN replied to ELoo's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Ditto what leatha g said!!!!! "If nothing changes,,nothing changes" The band is a tool,,not a cure all. If you keep on doing the same things you used to do,,yoiu'll keep on getting the same results you always have. Personally,,I eat very little bread or rice and no Pasta. You can gain weight forever if you fill your pouch with high caloric foods. Empty calories might make you feel full,,but they aren't good for you and provide temporary satisfaction. My physician is a hard ass when it comes to honesty and following rules. I appreciate that quality in him. He holds me accountable for my actions while encouraging me and guiding me through this change in lifestyle. THAT'S wht this is,,a change in lifestyle. Stick to the hard Proteins FIRST. Trust the diet that your physican/dietician hopefully gave you and follow it closely. I bought a Backyard Burger today,,its big,,with lettuce, tomato, cheese, onion and condiments. I pinch off as much bread as possible and have it still stick together and I slowly ate half of it. I brought the rest home and saved it for lunch tomorrow. It satisfied me for the whole night. I had to learn the difference in NEEDING to eat and WANTING to eat. Keep reading the website and learn, as I have,,from those who have gone before us! Good luck! I definitely need to do something about my weight - tried everything - had bi-lateral knee replacement 4+ yrs ago - and the weight that I am packing isnt helping the knees at all. I am in the St. Louis area, any recommendations on a Dr? I will be self pay - as my insurance doesnt cover WLS - but I am going to check with them. Just wondering if anyone out there has had lapband after a knee replacement? Thanks - this forum is awesome, reminds me of the one I found when I was researching knee replacements. Love it - Thanks!

I go in on June 10th for my first fill. After asking my doctor how much of a fill he'd be giving me, he told me just 1cc.....I was hoping for more, as I have read else where on threads that they get 3cc on their first fills. I'm a bit jealous! But then again maybe not, as I don't want to much restriction to quickly. Hey everybody, is this normal for a 8cc band to get only 1cc on my first fill? Just wanting to lose more weight than I have so far......it's been a slow process. Had surgery on April 21st and have only lost 12 lbs so far.:crying: Oh yeah....how do I edit my ticker to change the weight loss???

First fill was 30 days after surgery...4cc's, and it did absolutely nothing...(just saying)...as a matter of fact, after that first fill, I gained weight... Second fill was 30 days after the first, 2cc's....after witch my weight leveled off..neither gained no lost Third fill was 30 days after my second, 1cc....that was all it took to put me over the top...thought I was too tight, almost got that 1cc taken out....my Dr. talked me out of it asking if I wanted to go back to where I was with the 2 fills...I stuck it out and it all settled down and has been "perfect" ever since....that was over 3 years ago...still going strong.

@@Bandista thank you! It's so good to know I'm not the only anxious one. Picking the goal weight is mind boggling, I chose something in the middle of my "healthy" bmi but I feel like it is too light as well, I definitely will be paying attention to my clothing sizes instead.

My experience is that if I eat correctly (a BIG if) I can stop before full. Correctly means slowly and chewed thoroughly and tiny bites of Protein. Not carbs. Protein. Slow. Chewed well. Tiny. Slow. Chewed well. If I don't eat correctly and I'm eating protein, I get stuck. If I do eat correctly, I can then feel a soft stop. A soft stop is a signal that I've had enough. Eating more would be eating too much. My soft stops are: a sigh or deep breath, burp or a hiccup. Other people report that their nose starts to run. I have had good hunger satiety since surgery. Hungry at mealtime. I haven't felt full in 20 months. I sure don't miss that full feeling. I've eaten too much (always carbs) but not to the point of being full. Eating too much or eating carbs has stopped my weight loss. Removing those from my diet will return me to weight loss. I'm working on it.

Hello All, First I have to tell ,you guys have been an inspiration and thank you. I had surgery in January of 2009 so far Ive lost 70lbs and feel great. I have a quick question I was adjusted once, I haven't gone back. I think im consuming too much food. I can eat 3 taco's and feel full not overfull, just right. Is this too much food?? My weight loss has slowed down to about 1 pound a week. I know that's good but I've averaged about 2 lbs, its slowing down!!! not that concerned about it. What mostly concerns me is the amunt of food i eat. Is that too much??? how much do you eat? Do i need an adjustment?? Thanks everyone Pete O

Hi Joyce, Keep up the work in the basic rules that we should follow for weight loss! Keep us posted and if you have any troubles, give us a scream out

Not a bad experience at all. The surgery went well, although I'm sore at the five places he went in. It feels like I have such a weight inside me, especially when I get up from a sitting or laying position. That gets better each day. It's been a little tricky getting used to what to eat, drink, and waiting half an hour before and after each. I know I'm getting too few calories right now, but I'll work on that. I really want to be a good lapband patient. Never perfect I'm sure, but I do want to follow the rules. Thanks to eveyone who has wished me well, and helped with my protien shake selections. I ordered unjury last Tuesday (four days ago) but it hasn't arrived yet. Going to check on my order tomorrow. For those who are still up, don't forget to set your clocks back an hour. Barbara

:thumbup:Hi! Just want to start by saying "thanks" to so many of you for the helpful post! I was banded on August 18th and things after surgery were NOT what I had expected. I had always bounced back from surgery really fast BUT this time was different~~~then I got to thinking about how much older I am now than I was with past surgeries. So, the first week was a little rough but the weight loss was AWESOME!:thumbup:I had lost 12 pounds pre-op on the liquid diet and during my first week post-op I lost 11 pounds! I haven't lost any more, in fact I have gained a few pounds back! I was totally discouraged and found myself on this website looking for anwers~~~~~THANKS! I found so many people had been right where I am and everyone was so encouraging with their messages! I knew I would not continue to lose weight at the rate I was that first week BUT I did hope to see the scale move a little!!! I have my first fill on September 15 ( just next Monday) and I am just waiting to see how things go from there. I have not really been hungry! I have to eat every two and a half to three hours in order to be able to get all my protein in for the day. I will admit that I am a little nervous about the fill but I have a GREAT doctor and his staff is the BEST! Y'all keep up the good work and maybe I will be able to encourage others at some point!:biggrin:THANKS AGAIN!

I haven't had restriction for awhile, but I figured that was just because I had lost weight and was at goal. Well last night and all day today for no apparent reason I have had seveare acid reflux and the feeling that something is stuck in my throat (which is very different feeling than something being stuck in my pouch). I am terrified I have a slip. I mean it seems to be that this is a sure sign that something is wrong with my band. Early on the doc. said that my pouch was slighly dialated but he didn't feel the need to do anything about it. Now I know i'm getting ahead of myself but I wonder if it slipped all the way.

I posted this in the insurance forum, but wanted to check in here also and see if anyone had any information. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem or any advice for me. I had the LAP-BAND® surgery in June of 07. My company insurance was BCBS of NC at that time and they covered surgery and follow ups, fills etc. Later that year, my company went self insured thru med cost. At that time the HR department told me nothing would be covered related to weight loss or my follow ups. Because of this I have not been able to have regular follow ups and maintenance. I only go when I can save enough to. I spoke with our HR again, but she was no help and I also spoke with a company nurse and she said that she believes this is wrong. Because I did not change insurances and I have a medical device in me they should not deny me care now. I need to know if anyone else has dealt with this and if there might be any options I could take. Thanks so much! __________________

My weight has been stalled for the last few weeks. I have reviewed my food journal just to make certain nothing is out of the ordinary, and every thing is good and on target. I'm exercising several days a week, and get more than enough Water. What have any of you done when your weight loss stalled? Thanks, P

Hi Alex, Congratulations on this wonderful site. I think it would be great if we had our own personal weight logs on here. I was a member of a UK weight loss surgery site and here's the link to my log there : WLSInfo Forums You set up the weight log by entering your starting weight and height and the programme works out your BMI and weight loss total with every entry and also the percentage of your excess weight lost. There was also the option of making them public so every member can view it or keeping it private, for personal use only. I found it invaluable and it kept me motivated as I could see where I started and how far I'd come. Just an idea. Yvonne x
