    Question

Fluids are more important than calories right now. All fluids count, not just water. Try some Gator Ade...it has electrolytes and some sugar to help give you a boost. Little meals eaten frequently is the key, but as long as you can get fluids in, don't sweat the nutrients too much right now. Your body has a store of nutrients that would take a few weeks to deteriorate significantly. Sip, sip, sip!

Alcohol? Hey Vegas Girls this ones'for you!!

I would be very careful with drinking so soon after your surgery. If you are eating mushy foods, a glass of wine might be all right. I wouldn't try it on an empty stomach, though. Your system probably won't tolerate as much alcohol as before surgery and it might still be extra sensitive. As far as drinking later on, it is not prohibited, but can irritate your stomach. The one thing that I held on to as long as possible was the early committment to eat right and follow my new banding plan. I hadn't even tried eating bread or noodles until this past month. (I am 4 months out.) Keeping that initial motivation going as long as possible has been very successful for me. Now that I have given myself permission to try more foods and treat myself occassionally, I have to fight the temptation to over indulge. Take it step-by-step and you will do fine with all the new choices you will need to make in the weeks to come.

    Psych Evaluation

So I am meeting with nutritionist and psych on same day this week. I am nervous since I am 1 yr out of an abusive marriage and I was honest about stress and the feeling of depression on the questionnaire. I have never felt any self pitty and I have always tried to remain strong for my 10 yr old daughter. I firmly believe my faith has driven me and the leaving him was the BEST choice for my little one and I. But now I am afraid the psych might say, the lap band is no good for me...someone please advise what the psych eval may consist of...

    Wow! Why did that happen?

I find my band extremely touchy if I go a long time without eating. It gets very tight. It might be as simple as that. Try to get some nutritious liquids down a bit more often during the day perhaps. You do get random tightness too, you'll learn your band is not usually the same from one day or week to the next.
  5. I'm also three days post op and like you also miserable. I haven't come close to my daily Protein or liquid totals but what I have been doing is sipping, sipping, sipping at Water and my Isopure whenever I think about it even during the night. You don't want dehydration at this early stage. Just keep it simple for now. And my doctor cautioned against using straws as this adds air to your stomach with each sip. Good luck! My diet program can be found under http://www.kp.org/misg Go to bariatric surgery > patient resources
  6. I had a kidney infection the week before and they just administered additional antibiotics, but find reschedule the surgery . Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk
  7. I get it...I'm actually quite excited about missing work for a few weeks. It will be nice to relax! Even if it is while recovering... I am lucky in that my family is quite supportive. I've even told a few people at work and most of my friends, so I feel very supported. Rely on us if you don't have people you can talk to in person! I feel like people don't always get it right away, but I've been trying to explain to people how I came to this decision, and most all of them are on board now...As far as my goals go, if I lose the 90 that I listed, I'll be a tiny version of myself. Lol. I would be completely thrilled losing 60 or so...so we're kind of on the same page, although I have a little farther to go than you. :frown1: What's your biggest fear/concern with all of this?

    How much is to much?

You are fine, you won't feel restriction with liquids but once you start on solid foods you will feel restriction. In the weeks to come you will notice that you will be able to drink a lot more water/liquids quicker than the sips.

    How many calories?

@ JohnSmith, I respectfully disagree that she should be having raw fruits or veggies 3 weeks post op. The only exercize she should be doing is walking, if tolerated, until 6 weeks post-op, or cleared by a physician. Raw veggies are not advised really at all...unless in juice/pureed form until at least 6 weeks, and honestly, I am 4 weeks out and haven't intro'd a lot of veg as I am still having a hard time tolerating it. She could damage her stomach eating a raw carrot at this point, so I have read...
  10. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm not known for my patience! I was hoping for even a pound or two down just to give me that extra bit of hope. I feel tired all the time and I know my body is lacking in something to keep me alert, but I don't know what to do. I'm taking vitamins, B supplements, calcium and I'm very hydrated. I would think that my body would be content and was to get rid of some more fat, but alas it does not. I guess it's hard to evict a long time resident. I suppose I need to focus on my mid range goal of another 25 pounds by Christmas Day when we leave for a week of skiing and I have to fit into a new pair of ski pants that I bought a size too small. That is my main focus. My old ski pants aren't flattering, the new ones make my ass look good! Now if they'd just fit around my waist. Perspective- keep everything in perspective. I think I'll go out and get a manicure and go shopping today. I'm treating myself for the past two weeks that I have done well. I did lose 11 pounds after all. Better than gaining.

    Cleveland Clinic HELP

Hi Marsha, I had the exact same experience. I started the process in July. I was not able to get appointments until Sept for the Esophageal swallow. I live in Jacksonville so I have to fly down to Ft. Lauderdale. I then had a problem with Dr. Fromkin the cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic who would not take my stress stest that was 367 days old... I fought with him for over 3 weeks. He demanded I retake my stress test which added another 2 weeks on... Then after I started calling in October I was told I would get the call back... meanwhile.. I was told about one woman being out with a family emergency then another one was getting married.. and I was told my date would be in February.. I blew a gasket because I was losing all my Insurnace benefits which were going to pay 100%... I wrote letters to Dr. S and to other staff members.. and I cried alot.. Then I was told I was on a waiting list and if I got the call I had to be down there.. just like someone waiting for a transplant... then I got the CALL... I was called last week and was told I had to be there the day before Thanksgiving.. see another surgeon.. not the one that was going to do me and see the anesthesiologist..and my surgery would be Dec 2nd.. like I really want to fly in and out of Ft Lauderdale the day before Thanksgivving.. the most traveled day of the year!! so... Now I am having second thoughts and am scared to death with all the negatives I have been reading... so.. hang in there.. February is not that far away.... I am in the twilight zone and don't know what I am going to do.....

    Any others banded on 3/20/08

I was banded 3/24. Is that close enough? I'm in bandster hell, and I'm able to eat a lot, although it has to be the right texture (I'm still paranoid about eating coarse things like lettuce and steak). My first fill is May 7th and I'm looking forward to it, but I'm anxious. I lose about a pound every three days now and I've upped my exercise level with multiple brisk walks throughout the day.

Two days ago it was my birthday. I recieved a beautiful flower arrangement from our youngest son in NC. I also got a phone call from our oldest son, who's on TDY in Qatar. We got to chat for about an hour...so cool! Three days ago hubby and I went to my second support meeting at Wood County Hospital. This meeting was alot more interesting than the one in May. Any of the post-op patients who wanted to, were invited to go to the front of the room and share their story. Some also answered questions. I met a gal who had the VSG less than 1 year ago and has lost 150 lbs so far. Her mother, who was there, had a VSG one week before this meeting. Neither of them went to the front of the room. These meetings are almost exclusively discussions for the GBP patients. This is a little disappointing for me, as I want to learn as much as I can about VSG.
  14. I made a similar mistake ordering french onion soup a couple months out. Cheese that's too melty can cause major problems. However, I still like eating out. At three months post-op I can eat most things, and I like to look for restaurants that have a "light" section of their menu. I go for chicken or ground meat and fresh vegetables and tell them to leave off any rice or potatoes that might come with the entree. I usually portion off about a third of the entree to eat and take the leftovers home. I can also order a salad that has smart add-ins, but some people don't tolerate lettuce well. Earlier post-op, I tended to order cups of soup. Most importantly, I chew very thoroughly as I normally would. That way, I don't overeat or get anything stuck. I only go out once in awhile, but it is possible to make healthy choices and enjoy them!

    One day at a time!

Yeah! I made it through one more day. I ate high protein stuff all day and ate only some cauliflower and cantaloupe for carbs. The cantaloupe was a very small amount. It sure tasted good though. Hopefully I will break my 22 lb mark and drop a few more pounds before I get my fill in 2 weeks. :car:

tomorrow I start a new life...

Congratulations!! I would be excited too if my process had gone that quickly. Mine took about 2 months and I have been banded now for 1 1/2 weeks. It has definately been a experience. Be patient with yourself!
  17. Well, someone suggested it and it sounds like a great idea, so here it is. The check-in site for older bandsters. I'll get this started. I'm 63 and in the process of getting a loan to pay for my surgery if needed (can't cound on Medicare). I've had the Thallium scan. I had 5-way-bypass in 2001 and am doing fine in that department, but the weight has to go. I devoted myself literally to eating when they took my cigarettes away...but then that is what ended me up in surgery to start with. Now, the culprit is almost as bad. The weight has to go to help my heart and my arthritis. I have taken the sleep study and have sleep apnea. I'll be in the hospital for a night next week to see what amount of C-pap I need. I have taken a thallium stress test to make sure the arteries are still open. I'm scheduled for an echocardiogram on Monday (just because my cardiologist is overly careful and hears a slight murmur he thinks is mitral valve prolapse), which is liveable, but he wants to make sure there are no leaks from the bypass surgery. I am going to have all my blood work done on the 17th of Nov. and then I have the psych appt. and the appt. with the surgeon, at which point all the testing will be done, and I'll only have to wait for the surgery and to make sure I have money in hand. OK, now the rest of you older bandsters (who are banded or waiting) please check in and lets give each other lots of encouragement and talk about our experiences. To date I don't have much to share, but am looking forward to hearing from all of you that have been banded and the weight loss you have achieved. Check-in site officially open.

    How many calories?

At 3 weeks out I couldn't get in more than 300-400. Now at a year I do about 900 calories.
  19. Yeah its tough when I cant tell anyone. I guess I am just worried about not being able to eat and hoping I wont still be hungry and crave foods like I do now. I have read so many postings on this site so its great to hear different stories, and i am also worried about the throwing up, I dont want to have any embarrsing moments. Already, I have a problem with not telling my friends/family. My Parents are having an anniversary party BBQ one week when I get back, I wont be able to eat anything, so I may just say i am sick. Any other ideas let me know lol. Well I just finished my last yummy snack and after midnight will be on the liquid diet, however, I notice you are on yours for a week, I am only on mine for 3 days so I should not be to upset about it lol.

Feeling good but peopke are critical . overall sugar is stablization. I think i need a least four week off.
  21. My 3 year old son was attacked by a new dog that we got just over a week ago. The dog is no longer at our house and my son will make a full recovery, but the stress of what "could of" happened is really really hard for me to get past. My 5 year old son was able to come get my husband before too much damage had been done. My 3 year old has a lot of bruising all over his body, mostly to his face, lacerations all over his face, and the worst of it was that his right ear was completely detached from the the back and only connected by the skin on the front. I was not home when this happened, I was at school. I am just having such a hard time dealing with it, and I'm having trouble with staying away from old habits. I'm not overstuffing myself, but I'm leaning more towards unhealthy "comfort" foods, which have just been making me feel so disgusting and worse. I do not want this cycle to happen again! I'm so afraid that I'm going to destroy what I have accomplished.
  22. The closer you are to goal, the more slowly you lose but in saying that you may have reached your balance & are in maintenance. That is the calories you are consuming are equal to the calories you are burning. To lose more you either have to consume less or increase your activity. Whatever weight you end up at has to be sustainable. Many bariatric patients end up at a weight that is higher than what they may have initially wanted. But they’re at a weight they can maintain while still enjoying & living the healthy & happy life they want. It’s fine to eat several smaller meals across a day or graze on three meals as long as caloric intake is constant. It just has to work for you. I eat three meals and about 4 nutritious snacks every day because I can’t physically consume enough in three meals to maintain - my restriction kicks in & I can’t eat any more. My total caloric intake sits at about 1200 calories a day. Another path you could look at is Dr Matt Weiner’s videos & books about resetting your basal metabolic rate which could enable you to lose more if you are interested. The intent is to reset your metabolism to run faster so your body burns more calories just to function. I guess the big questions are do you want to have to take appetite suppressants for the rest of your life to maintain at a lower weight? Do you want to live your life consuming fewer calories &/or maintaining a higher activity level to stay at a lower weight? You may say yes to either of these questions & that’s fine. It’s your decision. Congrats on your weight loss & good luck whatever you decide.

    Incentive Spirometer

I only had to do it for the first week or so, but I don't know what your risks are for pneumonia. your doctor probably knows best.

    Disappointed

I wouldn't be too disappointed as you're ahead of the one pound per week estimate that my surgeon suggests is typical. Congrats on the weight loss.
