Hi, My Dr. and nutritionist started me on soft foods: Yogurt, applesauce, shredded chicken and tuna, flaky fish, cottage cheese, Soups, cooked soft veggies, etc...to give your tummy a chance to adjust. Try eating very small bites and always go for your Protein first. Continue to supplement with shakes throughout this process. I also only drank after eating so I got more nutrients. Anything that is high in Fiber (Beans, salad greens, raw veggies, bread...) will cause intestinal distress initially as your new pouch can only handle gentler things at the start of adding in real foods. It took me months to be able to eat beans...the gas was unbearable! I still can't eat rice, Pasta, breads, mayo or many condiments etc...but HEY! That's what got me into the weight issues to begin with Anything with caffeine - coffee, tea - was to acidic for my tummy also. Waited about 6 months to add that in. I was able to eat salads and raw veggies chewed up really well with no dressing after about 10 weeks and I was in heaven! Greek yogurt tasted like dessert and still does. Now I puree fruits that I bought and froze and add it to plain greek yogurt and it takes great I still don't eat rice...it gets stuck. Pasta doesn't agree with me and fills up my tummy too fast. It's a waste of calories. I can eat a little bread occasionally. If I have a cheeseburger and try to eat it on a bun, I can only eat about half the sandwich. IF I take it out of the bun, I can eat the burger and salad or fruit. Much more satisfying to eat different flavors than just a burger and bun. Bread is just wasted calories and over fills my pouch. I adore Outshine no sugar added popsicles as a treat! I am just 2 weeks over a year out from my bypass and am at 230 lbs down from 368 lbs. Slow and steady wins the race! This is a great forum Keep asking and good luck! Clarissa

Oooh, there's another one I want to try! The pudding mix in the yogurt. -
@@B-52, I can understand the issues with chicken. I'm the same way in that, if it's not prepared just right, it's not going down. I can eat beef and pork as long as it's not overcooked. However, since having my band, I've totally changed my lifestyle and eating habits and, as part of that, have avoided eating those meats simply because they're not very healthy. And now that I've stayed away from them for so long, I find I just don't like them anymore. And I don't care for chicken either. This is why I'm considering a vegetarian lifestyle. I just don't see any point in forcing myself to eat foods I don't like anymore, ya know? I did talk to my surgeon about it. He said he wouldn't recommend it for everyone and he thinks it will be difficult for me to get enough protein but told me if I wanted to give it a try that he would be supportive as long as I make sure I get at least 60 grams of protein a day. I think I can do that easily. I can add quinoa to my diet. I can also add chia seeds, which are high in protein and can be added to oatmeal, yogurt, salads, etc. There are high protein milk varieties now that are ultra filtered, like Fairlife, which has 13 grams per 1 cup serving. I can use that to make my protein shakes and I'm more than halfway to my 60 grams without even eating anything. Then of course there's cheese, cottage cheese, peanut butter, nuts, beans. Right now, what I've decided to do is is to completely give up all red meat and pork for a few months and see how that goes. Once I get through the next few months without those, as long as I'm doing okay with getting my protein in and not feeling like I'm missing out, I'll cut out chicken and eventually I may cut out fish. I'm ok with keeping the milk products, eggs, and cheese in my diet though so that makes things easier.

considering going vegetarian, need some advice
Corridor72 replied to pookybear's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
I've been looking into this myself and while I haven't made the jump yet, I've come to the conclusion that I don't think it will be as difficult to get the protein in as I previously thought. Quinoa is high in protein and is a complete protein so it's a good addition. It essentially takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with. Chia seeds are high in protein and can be added to yogurt, oatmeal, salads, etc. If you are doing vegetarian and not vegan, you can still have milk, eggs, cheese, cottage cheese. There are actually higher protein milk varieties now. The best I've seen is made by Fairlife. It has 13 grams of protein for a 1 cup serving. Kroger's carbmaster milk is 11 grams per 1 cup serving. I plan to use Fairlife milk for my protein shakes and to make my oatmeal with. Speaking of oatmeal, Quaker makes instant oatmeal that has 10 grams of protein per serving. Add some chia seeds and use milk instead of water and it's even higher! Greek yogurt is also a good choice and you can add Nature Valley protein granola to up the protein content there. You just have to look for ways to add protein to what you're already eating as you eliminate the meat from your diet. -

What is triple zero yogurt? -
Seems like we are in similar situation. How far out are you? I do cardio and weights. I meet with a trainer once a week. I run but haven't been running as much because the heat is horrible here. The carbs I get are from Greek yogurt, Protein bars, veggies. I don't eat any bread, rice, Pasta, potatoes. I've never even had a bite of those. Never had a bite of dessert. I'm frustrated because I want to be at goal!!!! Lol

Do you eat Yogurt? What brand? What sort of toppings do you add to it?
VSGAnn2014 replied to scarletwitch19's topic in Food and Nutrition
What a cool thread. Have learned so much already. My fave yogurt (thus far) is Dannon Oikos Greek non-fat vanilla yogurt. It's 120 calories, 12 grams of Protein. Totally worth it to me. Recently, hubby brought home, by mistake, Dannon Oikos Greek non-fat Black Cherry yogurt. At 130 calories and 12 grams of protein, it's worth the extra 10 cals. They're my usual evening Desserts. So delicious! I treasure every lick. -

I recently saw a post about mixing SF pudding with Fage Greek yogurt. The post said to take a tablespoon or so of SF pudding with a tablespoon of milk(lactaide) and mix and then quickly mix in the yogurt, however, it didn't state how much yogurt to use. Any ideas? -
Actually Cheerios have 22 g of carbs per serving. Quite a bit more than Greek yogurt! And the carbs in no sugar added yogurt are all from lactose, much lower glycemic index than Cheerios.
-
Love it in yogurt, esp. vanilla, but also berry flavors with a scandalous 1/4 scoop of genpro protein powder.
-
I use 1 cup of sugar free pudding or Greek yogurt (could use both but do half and half If you do) and 2 tbsp of pb2. Mix it, than put it in ice trays and freeze! Than boom frozen yogurt! delicious for preop and post op liquid diet!

Food capacity with exercising
NoMoBand replied to snowkitten's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Protein shakes are terrible after awhile and become difficult to even look at, but, for now, I concocted a decent tasting one that I am using before and after my workout I use one scoop of Walmart's vanilla cream Muscle milk with skim milk, 1/2 banana and 1/4 cup of oatmeal in the blender. It taste like a milkshake - uhhh -- well almost. :-) The strange thing is that this shake mixture gives me the energy to push my workout even further and keeps my hunger very satisfied until supper time. This is probably the perfect ingredients match that I was lacking. Issue is I'm getting a little tired of it. To keep from getting bored with the same ole, I'll change the shake thing for 1/4 cup cottage cheese with peaches/fruit and almonds or a yogurt with almonds and a toast with sugar free jam. Would love to hear of other ideas. jake -
Everything seems to make me sick- 2 1/2 months out.
Spiceyfrog replied to ChattyChatterton's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@sparksrn, I just had about 10-12 soybeans for lunch, that about what I can eat :-) The ONLY thing I can eat in a bit larger quantity is yogurt, I can eat a whole container, but it takes me about a half hour. Anything else, 1/4C max. -
If you have a decent relationship with your nutritionist I recommend speaking with her. If I was you, I would switch to one shake a day and then 2 meals and a snack if necessary. Sitting with food does not seem like a good idea. It feels like a slippery slope to grazing all day. One of the hardest things to learn is to stop when full. For me that meant stopping even when I just had 1 - 2 bites left. Now I do like @Languerr13 and trash those last 2 bites. When do you fit in drinking Water and exercise with your method? Are you logging your food and keeping track of carbs, sodium & sugar as well? Every meal doesn't take an hour, it just depends on my choices. I've noticed that I've been stretching the mealtimes in order to eat the veggies. I manage to get in all my fluids. This is a typical day: Drink about 8oz of water taking my Vitamins and medication 7am Breakfast - 2oz fat free roast beef and some veggies 10am Snack - Triple zero yogurt 1pm lunch - 4 oz tuna w/ one tbsp. of lowfat mayo 4 pm Snack - Protein Shake 6pm dinner - 2-3 oz chicken and veggie. I only drink about 20 ounces during the day because it's so cold in my office I don't get thirsty, but then I drink about 40 ounces after dinner and before bed. 700 calories and 90 protein, 36 carbs, 20 fat I log everything on myfitnesspal Unfortunately, I didn't lose my physical hunger, so I get headaches and dizzy if I let myself get too hungry. I'm losing pretty well, but I need for it to continue. Also, I met with the nutritionist last week and she said she wanted me to get more vegetables.

August sleeve buddy?
rln52 replied to lmm300missouri's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am in San Antonio getting my sleeve on August 10th if my insurance approves. I am waiting patiently but I just want to know. I have started preparing. I gave up carbonated caffeine sodas- I am a week out now. I am eating yogurt to get use to it and find my favorites. I bought a shaker bottle for my protein drink and ordered the trial pack of unjury. My preop diet starts 7/27, one week from today. Tell me about your preop plans and surgery date. I can use any tips you have to offer. -
Do you eat Yogurt? What brand? What sort of toppings do you add to it?

I hadn't heard of the icelandic yogurt, thanks for sharing. Be aware that all "greek" yogurts are not the same. True greek yogurt is extensively strained to get the whey out which then leads to thicker, more condensed yogurt with more Protein.... Yoplait (and others) are not true greek yogurt as they use additives and fillers to thicken the yogurt, so if you are concerned about getting true additive-free yogurt, check the label for things like guar gum and pectin, carrageenan, sodium citrate, potassium sorbate, corn starch. I know this doesn't matter to everyone, but it did to me when I learned so thought I would share. I personally eat Fage, which as no fillers, additives etc added. http://www.npr.org/s...-purists-fuming -
breakfast is the hardest for me. I avoid carbs like the plague and i absolutely abhor oatmeal. SO what do you do. im not a fruit fan, its a texture thing, sure i like apples and pears. or pretty much any fruit blended into a Protein shake. Yes protein shakes are still my biggest rut food. I have one for lunch at work 5 days a week, as its quick, easy and lets face it zero sugar zero carbs, 30 grams of protein..whatsnot to like, and I actually enjoy the taste. But breakfast, yes turkey bacon every day pretty much. or a scrambled egg or sometimes a scrambled egg with cheese,, These are a few of my favorite things. I like yogurt but even the light and fit yogurts all have at least 6 to 7 grams of sugar, and has carbs that equates to the same as a bowl of cheerios. I like others, am so fearful of sugar and carbs that yogurt scares me too much. in a quick and easy mood, tuna in a small green salad is my go to for dinner. but normal dinner is chicken usually in some kind of sauce or marinade.

Surgery 3/26/15 HW: 302 CW: 228 (-74) It is sooooo crazy how if I eat bad foods (bad, bad girl), I don't feel full, but a half a scrambled egg or 3 bites of grilled chicken make me belch like crazy because I am FULL. Obviously this is how I hit 302. It's getting a lot easier to live my new life but I could always use more exercise. Lots of great NSVs Great job, everyone!!! ---- One more thing -- how the H does low-fat vanilla yogurt have 40 grams of sugar and honey roasted peanuts have 4 grams? The sugar content of foods has definitely been eye-opening.

I am 1 week out and still having issues getting all my fluids in but I am able to eat yogurt now and cream soups. From what my doctor said that's all a part of my fluid intake so I'm happy to be able to advance. I bought silicone ice pop makers and made crystal light ice pops. That's seemed to help. -
@ I was a total sugarholic before my bypass surgery. It is not the reason I chose bypass but I am very glad that I did. It solved many other comorbitities very quickly post op. For me, the first 6 months following surgery I could actually eat sugar but hated the taste of it so I abstained As much as possible. I am actually allergic to sugar substitutes, they give me severe migraines so I have to use real sugar, honey or agave as sweeteners. Because of this, the only thing I drink is Water. Thankfully I broke the soda/juice/caffeine habit almost 5 years ago. I am happy drinking water or fruit infused water every day. In the last few months I have been eating more sugar than I would like to in things like pudding and even once in a while I will have a tiny serving of frozen yogurt or ice cream. For me, even eating yogurt contains real sugar. I don't have dumping syndrome so I really have to be careful and watch it so I don't get myself into a sugar habit again.

I have Chobani key lime blend yogurt every day for breakfast. I will add in about 6 raspberries or blueberries or cherries etc. to change it up a little. I love, love, love it! For my other meals I mix it up quite a bit.

That can lead to grazing. There is nothing wrong with planning for 3 meals and 2 Snacks, but I wouldn't sit with food. Are you doing Protein shakes or supplements of any kind? In the early stages I liked to start my day with a hearty Protein shake. I used Protein powder and added some greek yogurt for added protein. If it took longer than an hour to drink I put it away so I could then drink some Water.

How can I get in all my protein?
BLERDgirl replied to TJBintheOC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's takes some time to gradually work up to hitting those goals. Each day just strive to do better. Right now it's slow going. Coco Libre is about 15 gms of protein and I think 11ounces. I would strive for at least 3 of those a day. Have the first at 8 am. Make sure that any food you eat is protein rich. Yogurt, cottage cheese, soft scrambled egg (if you are allowed at 3 weeks). It's 64 ounces of fluids, not water although it should be primarily water. So if you drink 3 coco libre a day that 33 ounces of fluids and 45 gms of protein. If you are drinking 32 ounce of water, you will now have hit your Fluid goal. (33 + 32). Depend on the type of yogurt you choose and/or if you can have eggs you now only need 15 additional gms of protein. 2 ounces of FAGE 0% greek yogurt is 6gms of protein. A large egg is 6 or 7 grms of protein.
