    Something New Challenge....

Oh, Favoredone, this is a wonderful challenge and you've made an impressive list! For years my brother has had the motto "Take A Risk". He has stickers with that saying that he hands out to everyone. It's so important to break out and try new things, even if its a bit scary. I'm going to spend this next week working on a new line of cards with my art work and I'll spend this next month approaching some galleries and stores about carrying my art. It requires a large investment on my part to have the prints made on metal (which is how they show best) but I think this is one of those cases where you have to spend money to make money. I don't have a salesperson personality, so I've had a hard time putting myself out there around town.

    high BMI's

Hi Christina, Our stats are similar. I'm 26 and 5'6 with HW being 293. I had surgery 4/1 and my total weight loss has been 50 pounds. Unlike you, I'm more bottom heavy. I have a little bit of a belly but nothing some clothes couldn't hide. My problem areas are mainly my legs and my butt. I've been at a stall for the past week or so so I'm hoping once I break the stall more weight will fall off. My exercise regimen has been okay. Since I'm more bottom heavy, I have pain in my hips which makes walking for long periods of time really painful. I did walk a lot when I first got out of surgery. I was wheeled into recovery at 11am and by noon I was already walking around. I walked at least 10 minutes every hour (even at night - couldn't sleep). Now, I'm comfortable walking for maybe 30 minutes until the pain starts to creep back up. I follow up with a swim or resistance exercises with weights or abs. Let me know if you have anymore questions

    Grams of protein per day

I was told 60 grams a day. I'm 7 weeks out and I get in about 60-80 grams a day with no problem.

    need some words of encouragment

This is normal and you will feel a little better each day. It was at least a week before I felt almost normal. I too read all the stories about "I went back to work 2 days later", well guess what? There is NO WAY I could've gone back in 2 days!!! I think that people are just different. I didn't bounce back from this easily, but I had two kids and was in labor for a day and a half with each of them, no problem. You will a little better each day. I promise.
  5. I'm so glad to have found this site. It's been 10 months since my surgery and I don't think I'm doing very well. I can't stop eating bad foods...all the sweets and junk food. Funny how all the good foods get stuck but the garbage just slides down so easily. Sec... *popping in another M&M*... There I'm back now. Why is it that I'm so hungry all the time? I thought we were only supposed to be able to eat 1/2 cup of food at a meal but I can eat so much. I'm sure I've stretched my pouch. I've had plenty of fills and if I get anymore, I'll end up not being able to eat anything but liquids. Not what I want. I've lost 40 pounds so far but have not lost anything in the last 4 months. I have to lose another 40 more pounds but it's not going to happen if I keep eating this crap and being hungry all the time. Also, does anyone else throw up a lot? I get food stuck all the time and I throw up at least 3 or 4 times a week. And I still don't lose weight. I think I paid $20,000 to become a bulemic. Except that I don't lose weight. Any suggestions would be appreciated.........PLEASE!!! I need some motivation. Thanks Wendy

    Post Op Thrush

Thrush is very common due to antibiotics. I had the joy of a yeast infection (sorry...tmi). I forgot to have the doctor prescribe Diflucan to ward off the infection. I would call your surgeon. Forget the three day weekend. Someone is on-call and they can prescribe you meds or give you advice. Hang in there.
  7. Hi. I'm new to this site. Found it by accident. It's taken me a year to make this decision, but I finally did it in September. I have had my psych eval., sleep study, several consultations with my surgeon, Dr. Christine Edwards and two meetings with the dietician. I'm hoping to be banded in January sometime. I've been doing a diet for about three weeks and trying to get used to less food. I've lost about 9 lbs. so far. I joined to get some ideas, advice and just hear from people that are in the same situation that I am in. I have support from home, but not a lot. I have two teenage boys that eat well and a husband that has been thin his whole life. I haven't told anyone else in my family for various reasons, one being they would probably try to talk me out of this. I'm doing this for my health. My father died of a stroke at 55 and I don't want to go down that road. So far what I've seen on the site is a lot of good advice and support from a lot of people that are in the same situation. Looking forward to hearing from others and sharing some stories. Thanks for listening.

    Greetings from Chicago!

LOL...ok. First off, I was able to get my band because I had pre-diabetes. While on my pre-op diet I had lost 12 lbs. The difficult time for me was after surgery and before my first fill. I love to eat. Or should I say loved. I had my first fill and it was not adequate. I was still hungry. I went back to the doc about 2 weeks later and said "Fill it up!" So, he made the band pretty tight. I was able to drink a lot of fluids (ate lots off egg drop soup!) but when it came to food, 2 bites and I was done. I actually had the same fill for about 4.5 months. When I reached my goal he took out a lot of my fill and now I only have 1cc. I am maintaining quite well so far. I think my big thing was that before my band, I was quite lazy. After, I began to really workout and along with the reduction of food intake the pounds just melted away. I hope that helps, I'd be glad to answer any other questions that people may have.
  9. This is so frustrating. I had surgery on nov 18 so Im almost 2 months out from surgery. I'm eating way better than I ever have. I average about 70 grams of Protein a day and between 700-900 calories a day. I can't seem to lose any weight though. I lost 20 pounds in the 2 months before surgery. I lost 10 pounds the 1st week of surgery then nothing for weeks. I'm not sure how long my stall lasted because I didn't weigh for a long time but it was at least 3 weeks long. I finally weighed because my clothes fit better and I lost an inch. I lost 10 pounds. So now 2 weeks later I decided to stand on the scale and I lost nothing! I guess this is how this is going to go. Lose a little bit then stall for 2 weeks then repeat over and over again. I don't eat junk. I focus on protein. I track everything I eat on myfitnesspal.com my screen name is "ucjes" if you would like to go check out my food diary and see what I'm eating. Any pointers would be appreciated. I've also been walking about 3 days a week. The only thing I can think of that I'm doing right is I"m not getting enough Water in. Would that just completely stall me out though? I'm not even eating 1000 calories a day! This is ridiculous! I'm not weighing for another 2 weeks. By the way inches aren't moving either. This is why I threw the scale up in the closet. It causes me too much anxiety.

    Another stall...ugh

I'm right there with you - I was sleeved a few days before you...11/14. I have been losing ssssooo slowly - it's frustrating! I think I'm in another stall right now - I had one for 10 days between weeks 3 and 4. I'm trying to be positive and keep working to the plan. It's hard to not compare what you're results are to others, I do and I know I shouldn't. I want the weight to come off faster!!!! Hang in there - we're in this together!

    Help Please!

Another idea - would they let you work from home for part of the time? You may be too tired the first week but by the 2nd week if no complications, you might be up to at least some part time work at home.
  12. For me, it has been so many little things all adding together already to make me not regret my decision for even a single second. My life has been changing in so many ways. I just had new bloodwork done about two weeks ago and for the first time in many many years, almost all of my numbers are within normal range. Even my cholesterol is down to 166. Holy cow, i havent seen anything below about 200 since I was in my 20's. I have been feeling good enough to start doing more activities around the house. I am finally doing all of the cooking again, helping with the routine house cleaning. Going out shopping with my Mom where I am doing the driving. Able to move around more to spend time with my wonderful husband and loving family, chasing after my beloved nieces. I am still in a great deal of pain because of the severity of my hip issue but it has reduced a good bit since my weight loss and that is truly something to be thankful for. And my little lifts also come from people who have not seen me in awhile and they exclaim how good I am looking. All of hubbys co workers who he keeps updated with my weight loss, some family and every time any of my Doctors see me at visits. It never fails to put me in a great mood when I see any of them and does wonders for my ego. lol,
  13. So Sleeve Family, I know we all LOVE a good challenge... Well, since the weather in Chicago has been beautiful... I've been inspired!! LOL.. Sometimes our lives can get a bit.... mundane, monotonous, etc... due to family, schedule, whatever... Then other times, we can shy away from trying new things because of fear of change, failure or just being scared...Then there are a host of other reasons (above were mine... )LOL... So, the challenge is to do something NEW next week!!! Something out of your normal comfort zone or routine... It can be something you used to enjoy or something you've always wanted to try, but never had the nerve... The opportunities are ENDLESS!!!! Please share what you have decided to do, maybe I can do it next week...lol... Here's my list (for the next month or so): Walking along the beach (the weather has been BEAUTIFUL in Chicago... and i haven't been the beach since moving here in 2004!!) Getting fitted for walking shoes at a REAL running store Actually start a total body bootcamp class (March 26th) Call my advisor and resume my doctoral study WASH MY CAR!!!

    Blood Circulation

I was like that for the first few weeks post. I'm now 3 months out and it's no longer an issue.
  15. I'm getting sleeved in exactly 2 weeks from today so of course I had to start my diet. To say the least it's not that bad. Started off breakfast with a Premier Vanilla protein shake. Lunch soup, snack sugar free chocolate pudding.. For dinner I'll have another protein shake and late snack fat free yogurt... I can do this!

    Day Two of Liquids

Yesterday I started phase two of the pre-op diet -- liquids. I am currently having six shakes a day. I'm having meal replacements for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and meal suppliments around 10am, 3pm, and 9pm. The meal replacements have 27g of protein, and the meal suppliments have 23g. That puts me well over my daily goal of 115g of protein. It also puts me at just under 1,000 calories a day. How do I feel? To be honest -- bored. To me, meals were such an integral part of the day. For example, my wife and I work for the same company and generally have lunch together. Busy with kids before and after work, sometimes lunchtime is the only hour of the day we get together without being surrounded by general chaos. In the past we'd go somewhere, have lunch together for an hour, and talk like adults. This past week, lunch has gone like this. GULP. Ok, shake's gone, see ya. Everytime I walk by the kitchen or smell food I instinctly start looking around. I'm like a big fat rat, searching for a morsel of food to nibble on. I have to remind myself of the prize at the end of the mouse maze ... er, tunnel. Just as I feared, my friends and co-workers that I normally saw during mealtimes have been scarce since I started the pre-op diet. Who wants to sit around and watch a fat ass drink a small shake and then stare at someone else's plate of food, drooling? I'm sure I wouldn't. Hopefully a few weeks after surgery I'll be able to start tagging along during mealtime, even if I only have a smidgen of what they're eating. I only want to lose weight, not my friends.

    Opinions. Sleeve vs. Bypass

If you have GERD it can get MUCH worse after you have the sleeve. I've had two episodes of "heartburn" since my surgery (just over 2 weeks now) and it's definitely more unpleasant than it used to be. You'll lose weight slower with the sleeve than you do with the bypass because you don't have malabsorption going on. Sleeve also means you don't have dumping syndrome (some day that's good, some say that's bad). Sleeve means you're not barred from NSAIDS permanently. Recovery from sleeve seems a bit faster when compared to the bypass. You don't have Vitamin deficiencies as bad with the sleeve as you do with the bypass. You also don't lose as much with the sleeve - on average 60% of excess weight. Gastric bypass is 65-70% and it happens faster. Those are averages though - that includes people who go on a milkshake diet a year after their sleeve and gain all the weight back. I'd say that if the 60% mark leaves you still in the morbid obese range, then I would say that the bypass might be a better bet.

Blue Cross Federal Reasons to get Denied

Ok good to know. My initial BMI was over 41 on my 1st visit which was at a weight of 265. My second visit was just after I came back from being away for almost two weeks and during the time I gained 9 pounds so I was at 274. As of today, I have two and half weeks to see the nutritionist again and I am at 264 which is 1 pound under my initial weight. I am tracking everything I put into my mouth, working out 4 times a week and eating around 1,250 calories a day. Even so I drop a couple of pounds more, I am hoping I can be under my initial weight in and still over the 40 required BMI. Do you guys think I should be ok?

    busy weekend

Had a really busy week last week and I now am recovering. I didn't lose anything this past week, of course not suprised. I ate out most of the time. Didn't do to bad. I had a great time at the scrapbooking weekend. My girlfriend and I got a lot done, I don't believe I will ever get all my pictures done. I got home Sunday afternoon. I was so tired, I still recovering. Its so hot outside, I hope it cools off soon. I really want to start walking outside, but its just to hot right now for that. Maybe I will lose something this week. I'm starting to day with a protien shake. My husband is gone tonight for supper so will have chilli. I think I will make that it goes down good and I will have left overs for the rest of the week. I have to be serious this week about my food intake since I had such a good week last week eating out so much. I still can't have cookies around. I got some to take to the retreat last weekend and of course I ate them. I know better, but did it anyway. No wonder I didn't lose anything last week, but didn't gain any either. Will have a positive week this week. I have figured out that I have more time to fill now that I don't think of food all the time, and I'm not either cooking or shopping for food. That really took up a lot of time. I now have figure out what to do to keep myself busy so I don't want to eat. I find I can now go a couple of hours at time without thinking of food. That is experience that I haven't had in a very long time. I think I will try to make a quilt this winter and get more of my scrapbooking done. I must get busy. This will be a good week.

    Am I being a brat?

CultLogic, Usually when I ask "am I being a brat?" I am. But in this case I think you're being reasonable. I would call and ask to speak to the office manager. Tell him/her your concerns about the 4-6 weeks to take this one class. Tell them that you feel you're being put off because you missed that one class. Ask what your options are. Then write another post and let us know what happened. Sorry you're going through this, but I think you can get it resolved. Best of luck!
  22. Gosh, I hate to say that I wish I had the poops. The first week or so, I did have a little diarrhea, and then in the second week, I had another day of it. Just be glad something is coming out. I think it's all the meds you get, plus the liquids you are taking in, plus the anesthesia and change to your body. I think it's normal. As long as it's not coming up the other way, I think you are safe. Now, if it continues a lot longer and you feel faint, then I would call the doc. I say to just keep your fluids going. I think you will be fine.

Am I eating to much and cheating

Well, you could probably try some cream soups now and V8 juice. I went to watery cream soups a few days early because the broth was just making me sick... I called my doc and he said it was fine as long as it wasn't like day three or anything... And it wasn't. It was like day 5 I believe...
  24. I'm game. I've been afraid of the elliptical. I'm going to commit to using it twice next week, time TBD. I also need to take myself to the beach for a walk. I live in Florida for goodness' sake; I should be walking on the beach more often!

    Gastric Sleeve Surgery went Great!

Congrats, @@lisaluvsgreys, and welcome to the other side!! Your body's been through a lot; take it easy on yourself. LOL, @, Day 2 was the worst for me! Everything (slowly) got better after that. I'm 2 weeks out today, and I'm actually starting to feel like myself. Thank goodness!
