    meeting the doctor

I heard about this tonight at the surgical weight loss support group. They were saying that if your bMI is above 60 then to be prepared ( by the surgeons here) to be put on a diet and have to lose weight before surgery. Ive never heard this before but I can understand about the risks. Just remember why youre doing this and youll be fine. Its always hard to lose weight, Hell if it was easy we all would have lost 70lb along time ago! Wish you much luck and keep us informed!
  2. Out of control! I was doing so good on my diet with the nutritionist, lost 23 pounds as of 2 weeks ago.. surgery is in 13 days and it seems my appetite is crazy.. I have the feeling Ill be gaining it back by the time surgery is here... Ugh I guess its Im in the state of mind of thinking well I can just have this one more time.. one more time.. one more time... HELP!

    Am I eligible? Com'on!

@@bangbangbarbie Eat! Drink lots of water! Buy some lead undies (lol). They usually do want you at 40 BMI without co-morbids but it also depends on your insurance co. I've even heard of people putting wrist weights in their bra lol!! Ps that would be cheating....I'm not telling you to cheat
  5. My surgeon wouldn't even schedule surgery until I had lost 10% of my excess weight. It depends on your team, but you might not get to the pre-op diet without some work first. Sent from my SM-G925V using the BariatricPal App

    Pre op diet emotional

You can do this u was the same way I cried about everything and thought I was going crazy, even had martial issues and had a huge fight with my husband over nothing. Ugh made me crazy! You can do it and it is worth it!! At least after surgery you won't really be hungry and for some reason your not so crazy and emotional over everything. Bypass or sleeve ?

@@mckwestla I think it is a personal decision and each of us has our own reasons for our selection. For me it was the fact that long term data about the sleeve is showing almost as good total weight loss as the bypass, using a simpler procedure with less risk and less side effects (malabsorption, dumping syndrome, etc.) I also consulted with my surgeon and based on my weight, health and reasons behind my weight gain he agreed that the sleeve was the best option. If you haven't already, a good conversation with your surgeon should help you decide. I would ask about the residual effects of both procedures. For example, the sleeve removes about 75-80% of the stomach, including the fundus which is where ghrelin (hunger hormone) is generated. Thus, sleevers have relatively little actual hunger. The bypass does resect the stomach but leaves the old stomach, including most of the fundus in place. I think it would be worthwhile to know whether the same ghrelin reduction occurs in the bypass. Also, I've heard that the sleeve has, over time, less risk of stretching than the bypass pouch. I don't know this to be the case, just have heard it and it is worth asking about. Hopefully the surgeon you select can help you choose the best procedure for your needs.

    Hoping to Sleeve Soon!

Hello keepcalm, Welcome to VST!! Your story is a lot like mine. I've struggled with my weight my entire life. I've been super thin and I've also been super morbidly obese. I've had medical issues due to my obesity - but thanks to my sleeve I'm working on them! You will absolutely love Dr. Aceves. He is worth every single penny I paid, and I do have medical insurance. I didn't want to wait to get a yes decision knowing I'd have to doappeals and whatnot. I was gaining too fast and couldn't take a single second more of it. Best. Decision. Ever. PM me if you have any questions, I'm very happy to help out!

    Dr. David Kim patients

Hi Neil, I did have the VSG on 4/28/2017, and Dr. Castro was my surgeon. He is with DFW Bariatric Institute (formally Kim Bariatric Institute. It was very frustrating be a patient during their transition, but only insurance/paperwork wise. My surgery was awesome. Dr. Castro took very good care of me and I recovered very quickly. I have lost 103 lbs, and I'm only 7 lbs from my goal weight! Please let me know if you have any other questions.
  12. A few weeks ago I was 98% certain I wanted to go ahead and have the sleeve. I have one more appointment and then I can get a surgery date. My insurance covers everything. After some soul searching I decided to start a pre-op diet that would be very similar to how I would have to eat the rest of my life. I gave myself a few guidelines, I wanted to stay under 1000-1200 calories, 60-80 grams of Protein and 64oz of Water. I also wanted to give myself a head start dealing with head hunger vs physical hunger. After the first 3 days everything fell into place. I have no problem hitting protien goals and staying below the 1000 calories. It's still early but at this point it's starting to become second nature. Each day that passes I want the sleeve less and less. Has anyone experienced something like this? I am currently down 9 pounds from this, it's just over a week. (I am sure it's mostly water) I know that most of us have had great success with weight loss in the past but gain it back. After talking with my surgeon he explained that there is a 2 year window where the surgery will cause weight loss, after that it's all you. He has seen numerous patients put the weight back on. Sorry for the rambling but I guess where I am at is this: Is it worth keeping up this lifestyle to lose the weight without surgery, even though it will take longer? Or is surgery the answer since you can't go back? After reading some posts where people will lose 3-4 pounds a month, I keep thinking that I can do that without surgery. Now I am not sure that the risks of surgery is worth it. Everyone I work with thinks I am nuts for having second thoughts. I would love to hear what other people have to say about this.

    Pre-Op visit drama!

I feel your pain. The first visit I had at my surgeons office in Oct, the nurse with my case was bigger than I am, it was a little over whelming to see some one in this type of field over weight themselves and trying to tell me, that they know how I am going to feel after surgery. My thought and my husbands was have they gone thought this process before and if so why were they not able to keep off the weight. got me thinking how am I going to successed if I am not sure I can trust what this nurse has to say if she cannot control her weight either.

    Hello I'm new here.

Welcome Jessica, I am so sorry that you were bullied! That makes me so angry!!!!!!! People can be so cruel! I am so happy for your wonderful decision to have weight loss surgery. I too have medical problems associated with my weight. High blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, and asthma. I can now say thank God because of me having the gastric sleeve Jan. 15, 2015. I do not have diabetes anymore! YYYYEEEEEEAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! My blood pressure and asthma are under control and I soon hope to get rid of my sleep apnea. If you need to talk about anything sweetie, just let me know, or have any questions that I might be able to try and answer. Congratulations on making the decision for a healthier you!

    Return To Liquid Diet?

honestly, i did it. I had a stall for about 10 weeks. Of course during this time i was losing inches intially, but eventually, everything came to a stop, the weight, the inches... So i went back onto liquid diet for 3 days, and whoop, the scale moved, 3 lbs. Then darn! my period came for a visit, and I haaven't step on the scale since then, but i've started eating normal again, cos the fainting spells were pretty bad. I'm not for or against this idea, just sharing my story. anyway personally, 6 day stall i think its pretty normal, i think you should weigh yourself every 2 weeks..
  17. My dietician wants me to set a goal weight. My surgeon said that according to the antiquated medical chart they use that I should be 145# but at 5'11" that seems mighty low to me. I was 135# in high school and looked anorexic. Can anyone share how you decided on a realistic and healthy goal weight?
  18. :help: Hello everyone;I would appreciate some input from experienced Lap-Banders as I am getting really discouraged. I was banded 4/17/06-had my 1st fill on May 31st. I think it was too aggressive a fill or else something got stuck because I was vomiting so9lids and only keeping liquids down. So the Doctor did an "unfill" backk to 2cc(10 cc Band)--I was hungry and had minimal restriction. Had a 2nd fill on July 5th under fluoroscopy with barium and all to 5cc.That was 6 days ago and again have been vomiting solids.Went to the Doc this AM and he removed 1cc-now have 4 cc in there. They said that should be just right. I have tried mushies and have been vomiting again. I like some restriction as the weight loss is good--total of 28 pounds so far--- but I know the goal is to be able to eat small amounts of solid foods and chew well and eat slowly and lose weight. Am I doing something wrong or is My Doc too aggressive with fills. My band area is sore from vomiting as is my throat. I am very discouraged. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.Judy

    Gas Feeling or Full Feeling?

You know how when you fall asleep at night and you wake up the next morning and it seems like you had just fallen asleep? It's just like that. Even the groggy feeling of waking up is the same. Believe me, you are VERY relaxed! 1st adjustments are done usually from 4 to 6 weeks depending on the physician. My doctor does it at 4 weeks. During that time you are on Clear liquids, then full liquids and then slowly make your way to what are called mushies or blended/soft foods before completing the transition to real food. You are also usually on a pre-op diet where you lose weight as well so it is entirely possibly to lose that much. I have only been on my pre-op diet for a week and a half and have lost 12.5 lbs. So yes, you lose a lot of weight before your first fill.

    Worried now......

I have gone the 3 months that is required by my insurance company (Atena POS II). Kept all my appointments, had my tests done and have my appointment with the doctor on May 6th prior to a surgery date. BUT......I am missing a weight from 2005, 2008 and 2009 plus now the insurance company wants a note from another doctor stating the surgery is medically necessary. What is being over 100 pounds overweight, if not medically necessary?? I am and have been very non-compliant with going to the doctor. I am just beside myself over this. The worst part is that I realize it is due to my own stupidy!!! Does anyone have any suggestions for me??? Thanks a bunch Dot

    New need advice

It can happen, and probably will happen. There are so many factors to consider though....age, skin elasticity, how much Water you drink, toning, etc. it's hard to predict. I definitely wouldn't let that concern deter you from surgery. It was minimal compared to the benefits I've gained from surgery.

    Weight gain after 2-3 years?

I've lost 50lbs on my own but gain 30-40 over the period of several years. I've lost 46lbs with sleeve and hopeful that the new lifestyle changes will help to keep it off for life. . Good luck all!

    Weight gain after 2-3 years?

The fabulous thing about the sleeve is that it never goes away. Some may choose to ignore it and eat things we shouldn't be eating, but if you choose to abide by the nutritional guidelines, your sleeve will always work with you. It doesn't "go away" after 2-3 years. So, you are in charge of the extent of your success. If you stick with the program, you will be successful in the long-term. Some do regain after a couple of years though, and some never reach their ultimate goal. It's like anything else; it all depends on the amount of work you're willing to do. I'm 3 years post op and I've been at or below goal weight since about 10 months post op. So it is totally possible. But, I did a lot of hard work, both physically and emotionally. Good luck!
  24. I just followed up with my doctor for my one week followup and to remove my staples. During surgery they did a hiatal hernia repair and a liver biospy as he did not like how the liver look. Now I already knew that I had fatty liver disease so that was not a suprise for him to due. But today he told me that he always looks inside the stomach that he removes and he found multiple polyps. He did have a biospy done and they were all benigned. Has any one else found out that they had stomach polyps after the surgery? I did just a little research after coming home and polyps are common but some lead to gastric cancer which is hard to detect as it most people think it is just a stomach ache. Holy crap, at least mine were benign but what a scary thought. As for the liver biospy, it was found to be hepitatis inflamed which is common in obese people even though we have never had any form of hepitatis. He did state that this is now a leading issue for overweight people leading to a liver transplant. The good news is because I did get sleeved, all stomach polyps have been removed, hernia has been repaired and the liver will improve as I lose weight. I have stopped my diabetic medication as my blood sugar levels have been in the normal range ever since the pre surgery liquid diet. This has been the smartest medical decision I have ever made and I wish I would had this done several years ago. But I am now sleeved and moving to a healthier me.
  25. So, I've been trying to lose weight for years and it was always a rollercoaster for me. So now that I've been taking it serious I'm over 45 lbs down since December !! Yay me! I'm now month 5 into my 6th month preop period and I think despite my food I've done pretty damn good. I weigh in with my dietician tomorrow so I'm pretty nervous to see how much I've lost. I didn't start to see a surgeon until February, so August is my last appointment. I think the thing I'm more anxious to see change is my dating life after I drop a ton of weight. Im pretty confident but in the back of my mind I'm like I'm still the fat girl that you're ashamed of. And that's an insecurity in itself. But anyway, my main question is what are some of your goals your working towards in the pre-op and look forward to accomplish in the post op journey?
