WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Hi, I am scheduled August 23, 2021 for gastric sleeve surgery. I’m both scared and excited! I had Lap Band surgery in 2009 and lost 80lbs. I felt great and I loved the way I looked. A few months back I had the Lap Band removed and over the past several years I’ve put on 50lbs between not going to the gym during COVID-19 and the extra weight makes it difficult to get around. However I was just reading the thread on what you are looking forward to most after your surgery and I must say I was very encouraged by what I read!
  2. I was just referred to Kaisers medical weight loss program by my primary care doctor. I have orientation in a week and a half. At what point do the doctors decide if Im a candidate for surgery? Im about 3 lbs off from having a BMI of 40. Ive weighed this for 3 years. I only have pre diabetes so I dont have a comorbidity. Could this disqualify me from surgery? My primary care doctor didn’t explain all the requirements for surgery. Online it states I need a BMI of 40 OR BMI of 35 with comorbidity. has anyone here had experience with this?
  3. Hi ChocoSnowBunny, First, so sorry to hear you had cancer, I can't even imagine how devastating that can be and praying you never have to go through that again. Second, I'm so glad you went for another opinion. My surgeon told me not to be hard on myself because of gaining weight back because it was the surgery that failed not the other way around. Patients with a very high BMI that have the gastric bypass, will most likely gain half or all weight back because it's not the right surgery but back in 2006, even though the duodenal switch was being done, it wasn't as popular as the gastric bypass. I researched this and my doctor was right. My BMI was 55 back then. Don't be hard on yourself anymore and there is nothing wrong with you. I hope you get your appointment soon. My best to you and I'm excited to hear about your journey also.

    Post VSG Regrets?

I am about 5 years post-op and definitely regret it as well for mostly the same reasons as SleevedK above. Yes, I lost quite easily at first but that only lasted the first year. After that I could not lose anymore no matter what I tried. The worst thing? I am ALWAYS hungry. Before I had VSG, I had done low carb/keto for quite awhile and lost well and had a lot of energy. Part of that is eating plenty of fat which keeps you full. Unfortunately, after VSG I could not eat much fat. Protein first of course, but if I had too much fat I'd get sick. I also LOVE vegetables and can no longer eat much of them. I fill up quickly at a meal but am starving an hour later. I was told that at least in the first 6 months or so, hunger would never be a problem b/c the part of your stomach they remove is where the hunger hormones are secreted and that eventually that would come back. I was hungry from day one and it never changed. The biggest disappointment to me was that I did want the bypass. I went in for surgery and woke up to find I had nothing done. Doctor tried but could not pull my intestine far enough forward to attach it without stressing the incision. I went on a liquid diet for a month and lost 22 more lbs, tried again with the agreement that if it still wouldn't fit, he could go ahead and do VSG and that's what I woke up with. My surgeon has a very good reputation and I trust him. My body has always done weird things. Not sure if it's just all the fat in the omentum around the intestines that was the cause or adhesions from my previous gallbladder surgery, although he did say he broke down some of those. By 3 yrs post-op I'd not only not lost anymore but started regaining. The regain is totally MY fault, not the surgery, but I was so tired of fighting to lose with no results that I began eating junk food again and it crept up. All told, I lost 85 lbs and regained 28, and have been sort of stuck there. I'm now revisiting trying to do low carb since it works for me once I get past the initial cravings, etc. I had some GERD prior to surgery but it went away with the weight loss, only to return with a vengeance after i began to regain. It is MUCH worse than it ever was prior to surgery. I have not had an endoscopy to see if there is a hiatal hernia or anything yet; it's on my list to get checked out soon.
  5. I"m tomorrow. Noon arrival at the hospital. Still talking myself in and out of it. I lost 50 pounds since January. I keep fighting with myself that if I lost that, I could lose the rest. Then I come to my senses and realize I've been doing this for a good 40 years. Not the first time I lost weight. It doesn't stay off so I *need* this tool. Right? Right!
  6. Yes. It's very common. I stayed at the hospital for only one night, they weighed me when I entered, and weighed me when I left. I had gained a whopping 10.5 lbs. from their fluids.
  7. I had a gastric sleeve on Tuesday, August 3. Have felt tired and drained since. Today was the first day I have weighed since surgery. I have gained 2 pounds since surgery. I am following the post op diet to the letter. Has this happened to anyone else?
  8. I am so incredibly happy for you. I had Gastric Bypass in 2001. Most weight lost AFTER bypass (279) SW (before surgery) - 345 CW - 315. After enduring stage 4 breast cancer in 2010, I gained most of my weight back. I decided to return to my original doctor and request testing to find out if something went wrong with my original surgery. I was told everything was still in tact and I just need to start from SCRATCH! But I explained that I was able to eat a heck of a lot more. And that I would like options as to what can be done to tighten and/or revise my surgery. I believe my doctor was so eager to NOT have any "revisions" needed that he just sent me away - RUDELY! So I decided to ask around and seek a second opinion (of course - years later- because I believed there was something wrong with me). I followed his advise - but still believed something was wrong. Fast forward. I met a woman in my SAME situation and she referred me to her doctor for help. NOW, I am just waiting for an appointment. I will be researching the duodenal switch. I was never given this as an option. I am so excited for you.
  9. Thank you so very much for taking the time to share this with me! You have no idea how this information helped lift a weight. 🤗 I am currently at a BMI of 54 and still loosing weight. Thanks for pointing out that my stats were not showing everything. I will be updating that today. Yes, the picture is of me currently. I will be doing 2 protein shake meals and one protein and non-starchy vegetable. This is what the surgeon has requested I start a month out from surgery. Thank you so much again for reaching out and sharing. I am wishing you a wonderful new lifestyle journey with amazing results!
  10. I posted this on a different thread, but wanted to share. Not sure why the revision has been so successful for me, but I'm loving the results. Here are my stats over my 6 year journey. Highest weight May 2012 - 222 lbs. Gastric sleeve surgery weight November 2014 - 212 lbs. Lowest weight post sleeve May 2015 - 151 post op 6 months (61 lbs. lost) Highest weight prior to revision surgery January 2019 - 205 lbs. (54 lbs. gained) Weight day of revision surgery October 2020 - 185 lbs. Current weight August 2021 (10 months post op) - 128 lbs. (57 lbs. lost) I hope that I never have to add a line that says I've gained weight back again!!!! Good luck on your journey!!!!

    Gastric Sleeve BMI 35

I am 9 days post sleeve op, I am 5"2 and weighed 178lb. I have already lost 12lb due to the post of liquid diet, ive had no complications so far and healed very well, my surgeon said I did not need to do the pre op diet due to my weight not being too high and I was very much encouraged to have the surgery done before gaining anymore weight (yoyo diets for years).

    How much ………

Hi All im due for surgery on 19th Aug, I’m really confused about intake of liquids after surgery…… breakfast???? If I have a smoothie, how much should it be for each serving, should they be very runny same with soups, I’m planning on making soups b4 I go in and freezing them, but again how much to put in each pot i have a lap band, 12 years now, nothing but problems, so changing to sleeve, I have lost 5 stone, currently weigh 13 stone, and really don’t want to lose huge amounts, 2 stone, so also worried about that……… I’m just worried lol really I want it all, 2 stone weight loss, keep it stable, and to eat normal small meals, without having to run to the bathroom every time I eat, which is what happens with the band sorry jumped from one thing to another
  13. Hi, I'm new to this site. I was hoping to hear from anyone who has had a revision from RNY to Duodenal Switch? I had Gastric Bypass surgery in 2006 but have gained half the weight back that I lost. The weight I lost was good but not near my goal weight. I'm scheduled for revision surgery 8/12/21. Thank you!

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

So I’ve been 5 days post op now, I generally feel ok now, much different from when I was in hospital and 1st day of coming home. (Horrible) no nausea and Pain is minimal also. Today I walked outside for almost a mile and went back. I feel ok, sort of winded but ok. I’m still doing pretty much the liquid only diet. I was able to eat a whole sugar free pudding cup today. If you count the pre liquid diet weight loss I think I’m at 23 lbs lost and hoping to lose many more!
  15. I've been on here while, but I've never figured out how to change the basic information in my profile. I want to fill out the part of my profile where it asks me when my surgery was, starting weight, goal weight, etc. When I go to my profile and I click on the pencil to edit, it brings me to a different section with my location information and the blurb I would write for my bio. Does anyone know how I can change the other stuff? Thanks

What are you looking forward to ?

I want to be able to: Scuba dive with my son and husband again Wear my wedding ring Fit in my husband's Bonanza and not die at the idea of giving him my weight for flight planning or have an anxiety attack over whether we'll be able to get it off the ground Fly commercial without seatbelt and/or armrest issues Wear a swimsuit that is NOT a dress Ride roller coasters with my kids Sit anywhere without having to worry about the size/shape/strength of the seat Stand up with ease, regardless of how low the chair is Reduce knee pain enough that I can avoid an impending knee replacement Not be disappointed because a clothing item I want doesn't come large enough for me Ride a horse, kayak, jet ski, river raft, zip line or whatever the heck else I feel like doing without worrying about weight limits

    10 Weeks Post Op Help

I definitely think everyone is different, but for sure if you are weightlifting 5 times a week, your gaining muscle so your weight won’t go down as fast because of that

    Keto/Low Carb

I don't think anyone should recommend caloric intakes or macros for someone, unless they are a dietitian/nutritionist, there are simply too many variables to consider...age, weight, body composition, activity level, etc. What might work for one person may not work for another person, even if they are similar sizes/stages/time since surgery. You'd be better off scheduling an appointment with your dietitian/nutritionist to get recommendations tailored to you. You will have a far better chance of success with those than something some rando on the internet gave you, which after all, is what most of us are to one another.
  19. I can't speak for everyone, but given the bariatric community is composed of mainly obese to morbidly obese individuals, even if undiagnosed, I would bet the vast majority of people have some sort of fatty liver, liver disease, NASH, etc. My surgeon said virtually as much at one of our appointments. I also asked her about whether she would abort the surgery if my liver was too fatty (she would), but she said that she had no worries about me, because I'd been losing weight prior to surgery (which it looks like you are), I did the pre-op liquid diet for 10 days (sounds like you are going to do at least some length of liquid diet), and she said generally people who have livers too fatty to actually do surgery have BMIs in the 60s. You don't have your stats listed, but assuming that is you in your profile picture, it doesn't seem that you are in that category.
  20. I am looking forward to: -going on rides with my kids when they are a little bigger. -going shopping for clothes in smaller sizes. - not fearing whether I will fit in airplane seat (or sitting in any seat comfortably) -getting off BP meds. -having more stamina & energy while walking. -getting more comfortable sleep (less hip & back pain). -getting to Onederland. -moving down to "overweight" category on BMI scale. -fitting my calves in boots! (even if I don't ever decide to wear them, just knowing I don't need to buy for wide calves would be nice) -my doctor's not mentioning my weight. -not being uncomfortable sitting in front of people/moving away from the walls & back of rooms (hiding). *I am sure I forgot some so there may be a part 2 soon!😁
  21. So it’s been one year! my weight before surgery (August 2020) was 330 lbs! my weight today is 170 lbs. I really want to inspire people as much as I can.. I want my journey to show you that you can do it no matter what. I’m much healthier now and I feel like I own the world, my life has completely changed, I don’t have sleep apnea anymore, I’m back to being the energetic kid I used to be, no more sleeping 24/7, and I can finally drive! ( I never had the chance to due to severe sleep apnea) I couldn’t ride roller coasters before duo to my weight, and I’ve waited in line just to discover that I don’t fit into seats many times. But now, I can fit in every single ride and I just feel so happy, I feel.. alive! Before pics and after pics included ❤️ Hope this inspires someone!!
  22. Had the revision a few days ago. I went from vsg to rny. From day one with the sleeve, I was hungry. I don't know why. From beginning to end, the most I could eat was 10 oz with my sleeve, and I still lost weight but I remember it being a struggle to keep under 1200 cal. So with the RNY, the recovery pain isn't much different than the sleeve. Every pain was doable. I didn't feel nauseous, never threw up when I was in the hospital. I do feel like I did 1000 sit-ups. GasX helped a lot. I felt like I could've walked out of the hospital that evening but I had to stay overnight (due to insurance). I walked out of there at 11 am the next day. It's been 4 days, and I'm not hungry at all. The two days of clear liquid for pre-op was difficult, but now 4 days post-op RNY there is zero hunger. It's a new feeling for me. Some notes for the curious: I had a urinary catheter while asleep. My revision took less than 1.5hrs. I had a serious dry mouth and a sore throat that made me want to eat more ice chips and drink more water, which is good. No nausea, I took Aprepitant 40mg capsule two hours before. That helps with post-op nausea and vomiting. If any of you have any questions, please just ask and I will share my experience.
  23. Hey y’all, hope everyone is good. Quick question please, what’s the best way to lose weight after vsg and also does eating less than 500 calories slow down your weight loss in general?

    10 Weeks Post Op Help

Do you track the food you are eating? Making sure you are getting enough protein while staying low carb? Also, you’re weight lifting 5 days a week and muscle weighs more than fat. You might be losing fat and replacing it with muscle. Maybe go by inches lost or how clothing fits rather than how much weight you lost.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Oh, I can certainly relate to having a busy schedule. I'm wondering if food prepping on one day that you have a little bit more time will allow you to prepare some easy protein options. I had to make food prep a priority. Then the other hard part was making actually eating the food a priority when I'm at work. Now that I have gotten into the swing of both, it's a new habit that I prepare on an off day and I eat. Lite proteins should not slow your weight loss. Lite, easy to eat proteins when you're busy might help your loss and your body as well. Just a thought. Sometimes I just eat a cheese stick when driving to or from work. Simple and no prep needed. As I mentioned in my other post, I use edamame as a very simple protein Boost. I buy them frozen so prep is so easy and hardly takes any time. They last when at work so I can grab a few when I have a couple minutes available. Hope your protein intake improves 🙂
