Do you eat Yogurt? What brand? What sort of toppings do you add to it?
Smye replied to scarletwitch19's topic in Food and Nutrition
@@Stevehud, you're dead on that we need to be careful with sucrose (and all sugars in significant doses). But do keep in mind that in order for your liver to be able to process all that Protein successfully, you do need some amount of carbohydrates. Anything under 100g is considered 'low carb' and under 50 is 'very low carb.' Staying under 15 is 'dangerous.' I keep mine at about 40g after working with my NUT to figure out how many I need to stay healthy based on RMR, VO2 and a few other metrics. Just be careful and make sure you're working with a NUT to determine your 'low carb' goal rather than taking a 'lower is better' approach. There's a reason folks on the Atkins Diet tend towards liver failure young (see The Lancet, May 2014, I think). There's also the fact that all carbohydrates (except some fibers like cellulose) - especially the starches found in things like zucchini (great for us), cauliflower (central to caulibread), heck, even lettuce are broken down by the amylase in our mouths as we chew into, what else, sugar! So although these foods are 'sugar free,' by the time they exit our pouch and start being absorbed, many are just as sugary as unsweetened yogurt (and actually higher in sucrose [white table sugar], believe it or not). And all of that sugar is produced through an enzyme action, not any sort of "i have to digest it so it cancels out' sort of mechanism (unlike the sugar that our bodies convert even steak into so we can use it for energy - THAT is a deep metabolic mechanism that absolutely cancels out the sugar I don't say this to say 'don't eat zukes - they're secret sugar' (in fact, eat them a lot!), just to say that - Yes, we need to be careful to monitor and keep our carbs low. And yes, sugar is one to be particularly careful of. But when we demonize any food (except trans fats, those things are straight-up Satan molecules:) we run the risk of actually harming ourselves and/or missing out on a fully nutrative diet. All that aside, if your NUT says I'm a nut, do what your NUT says. I am neither a doctor or a nurse, just a well-educated former med student, chemist, and concerned bari-citizen who doesn't want to see anyone's liver go. It's a hell of a way to die. -
How did you know?
Hipigrl replied to Soon2beslimSamantha's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have been "heavy" my entire life, but I started getting morbidly obese about 15 yeas ago after a back injury. I had two back surgeries, first one 8/2007, second one in 11/2009. I also broke my left ankle (for the 5th time) in 10/2010. After a major foot surgery in 3/2011, I decided to go for the sleeve. About a month out from surgery, I got pregnant and abandoned my WLS plans for the time being. I had the baby (best thing ever!!) and got back on track for surgery in October of 2013. I then caught the NORO virus from my kid and spend two days sitting on the toilet and vomiting into the waste basket. That freaked me out so much that I backed off from the surgery. My back and foot pain was getting worse (one of the five screws in my foot/ankle had broken and wow, the pain has been intense!) and all the doctors were telling me it would never get better until I lost about 100 lbs. at least. At the time, I was about 330. The doctor for my foot told me that he would have to take out all the pins, put in thicker ones, and reinforce the area with steal plates. This did not sound like it was going to help get me out of pain. So, back to the bariatric surgeon. I started with this again in February of 2015. My doc put me on a diet pill to help with appetite suppression, and I lost almost 50 lbs. from March 2015 - June 2015. It took a while to get all of the insurance requirements met, but it was finally approved, and my surgery was on July1. I am 23 days out of surgery, just started my 4th week post-op, and while it has not been easy, I would not go back. I had the sleeve because I did not want to have as many issues with malnutrition as I have heard can happen with bypass. I know that I will eventually get to eat real food again, just not nearly as much, and I am so happy with the weight loss. The biggest issue I am having is getting my Protein. I am a vegetarian and the idea of drinking milk repulses me. I am not a vegan, will eat cheese and yogurt, it is just milk that grosses me out. Soy milk was not something I wanted to try, but I find the light vanilla and light chocolate is palatable. I am still experimenting with different protein supplements, but I feel confident I will eventually find one that I can get down. I have found a few suggestion on this forum that give me hope. :-) I hope this info has helped. Good luck! -
Googled it and this is what their website says: Do I have to be on a liquid diet at any point? As with all surgeries you will be required to be on a clear liquid diet the day before surgery. After surgery for seven to ten days your meal plan will include such items as protein drinks, milk, yogurt, pudding and cream soups. Then you will gradually progress to solids.

75 Pounds Down Today -- I Love My Band!
Bandista replied to Bandista's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
@@dfaulkner hi there and congratulations on your tremendous success. I think we all worry about going back to old habits or complacency. I was a restricter for so many years. Now if I want something I let myself have a bit and then I am not in that mental state of Can't Have. It's a head game, for sure. Boredom can be a factor; if I'm busy I'm not thinking about food. Pink Dahlia's suggestions are great. Maybe you need a treat so why not find the right one for yourself. I have those 100 calorie yogurts that have real sugar and Steevia in them -- I mix in chia seeds and a little gluten-free Cereal, maybe a few nuts to make it chewy so I get the signal for satiety (otherwise yogurt is a slider for me). This appeases my sweet tooth and my craving for something creamy, plus it's a meal. If I'm short on Protein I put in a spoonful of GENEPRO Protein powder for a 30 gram hit. But that's rare. I have a bottle of Steevia that I like -- it's from Trader Joe's. There is a lot of variety in taste and you need to be careful to make sure you get one that is 100% Steevia as there are ones out there with less than desirable ingredients. It's super sweet so just try a few drops in something. Good luck and let us know how you're doing. Four years out is so inspiring! -

Christina Cigi Charles replied to scarletwitch19's topic in Food and Nutrition
I personally like the Kroger/Fred Meyer brand, CARBmaster. It has 60 calories, I think 9 grams of protein, and only 4 carbs. I like to put the vanilla in my smoothie with fresh fruit and a cup of light silk milk. Or the yogurt alone is good. -
Cheated on liquid diet
MSWMike replied to jppaul16438's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some of these pre-op diets sound wonderful! I am day 10 into the diet- 4 more to go before surgery. Mine has been nothing but liquids! I need to get in 90g of protein daily (my particular protein goal). I can get that from shakes or up to 1 Greek yogurt a day. I can also have as much non-calorie drinks as I'd like- so long as I get in at least 64oz every day. I'll admit and say that I cheated- but it was 2 pieces of lunch meat that I stole from my roommate! At least it wasn't a pizza...or a cheesecake...or a cheesesteak...or cake! I'm 5 days out from surgery, so I am being a good boy! -

i was in the same position. I had rny on 4/16. I weighed 300 starting out and stalled 2 months out just under the 50lb mark. I yo-yo'd between 252 and 256 losing and gaining the same weight for 4 weeks. Today I finally broke through to 249 after weighing 252 yesterday. Finally hit my 50lb goal! I started stalling right after I started my exercise program. I don't know if I can call it an official stall because I believe I lost inches; although, I did not measure. I have had a cold for the last few days, so I am not sure if that had anything to do with my weight loss. I have continued to monitor my food intake and exercise on my fitness pal. I have added more Protein to my diet by eating every 2-3 hours. Before I only ate the three meals and a Protein shake. This met my requirement of 60-80 grams of protein a day. I consume more protein now with the two Snacks being either a piece of chicken or a greek yogurt. I hope to see the scale continue to move down.

Anyway I had tomato soup today and it went down fine but a ton of gurgling!! I also have it on occasion w the yogurt? Is this normal? Like I can feel it go down and then it's feels like bubbles in my throat down to my stomach? Will it get better??

Pre vs post op diet...prepare yourself! (This is somewhat of a rant also)
shuga04 replied to MrsDixon's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm post op 8 days and I'm at home with out help today for first time. As far as hunger, yes I have felt hungry. Nausea has been present too. Both are easily managed. Today I was cleared to take in creamy soup and Greek yogurt in addition to the other fluids and proteins I have been able to take in. -
9 weeks out and only getting about 600 calories in daily
Inner Surfer Girl replied to maysleever2015's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1200 calories is doable. My protein goal is 100 grams of protein and I am about 1200 calories a day. I eat lots of Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, turkey, tuna, etc. I still supplement with a protein shake most days. One way to up your calories a little bit is to add some healthy fats. -
I tried unjury samples pre-op, the vanilla was really good. When I had my band, I used, and use now, New whey Protein Shots, 42 gms for 3 oz tube. 12 for $30.00 delivered for free from the Vitamin Shop. Easy to carry with me, easy to just drink and get it over with. I'm sick of them now, but still prefer them to shakes. What I do is...have a drink handy, I don't smell while I drink it and down it goes. I quickly drink something and swish it around my mouth to get the taste and texture out of my mouth. Works great! 3 oz. with 42 gms protein, not bad. I get the rest of my protein in my diet like, non fat plain gk yogurt with some Equal in it and various flavoring techniques, chicken, cottage cheese, eggs, hummus, cheese. I just got my one month review and my levels were "perfect"! Yay! Baked chick peas are a good go to as well.

Frozen yogurt bars. The mint chocolate chip ones are only 100 calories....the problem is I want to eat 4 at a time!

@@rora - I don't go everyday so I didn't worry to much for a couple of days. when I did it was "different" without TMI - loose & very dark. I have since had trouble because of the Iron supplements I was taking. Search "pineapple" here and it explains what it felt like Needless to say RN said to stop iron supplements until I get new BW done in about 3 weeks. I see doctor for 2nd f/u appointment on 9/8. She said if my iron is low we will address it then. I still have some issues but I add miralax to my drink or yogurt about every day (sometimes I forget) and I haven't had "pineapple" issues.

I was sleeved on 6/18/15 -- 5 weeks ago today! Aside from the headache I have today :-( things are going well. Averaging 60-70g/protein per day Down just over 22 pounds (it's going really slowly!) I drink at least one Protein shake per day, but have also eaten: Greek yogurt, tuna salad, eggs (scrambled, hardboiled, and also in a mini quiche), refried Beans, turkey chili, hummus, etc. I could be exercising more ... but it's been so damn hot/humid! :-) -
Tomorrow! July 2 - Who's with me?
mclorrie replied to mclorrie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Three weeks post op - Doing well! Went back to work on July 21! Feels good to be back! I'm a little tired when I go home at night, but am adapting well! Still on the pureed diet until next week. It's really odd adapting to my new food portions! It's crazy how little I eat, and I'm satisfied! Hunger pains are still there, but I think it's mostly head hunger. I should be able to move on to soft foods next week which will be anything you can slice through with a fork. I'm still struggling to get my 60-80 grams of Protein a day mainly because I'm just not hungry at night after supper. So today, I'm trying something a little different. Protein shake in the morning when I get to work, and about a couple hours later I having lite yogurt. I'm usually hungry after late afternoon before I go home from work, so I'm going to try having to have another Protein Drink before I leave work tonight. We'll see how that goes... I'm getting all of my 64 oz. of Water - no problem! I can't believe I'm 42 lbs down already since I started this journey! Time to start getting busy in the gym! Thinking about asking hubby if we can go out on the bike trails this weekend! If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask! -
Roll call all who had surgery JUNE 2015
Kushka replied to JosieAppleHead's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello, Hello! I was sleeved on 6/22. I only weigh in on Sundays, and so far I'm down around 28 pounds since June 1st which includes pre-op and post-op. The three ladies who were sleeved with me on the same day at OCC are all down about the same. We would all be classified as 'lower BMI" I believe, so we are pleased. I'm in week one of soft foods. I also find it interesting that a scrambled egg goes down smoothly one day, and then sits like a rock another day. I tried some soft ground turkey this week, and the first two times it was ideal, and then yesterday I had serious stomach pain for about 30 mins, and tried to walk it off (same portion). I am working harder at chewing more, as I have dental issues and have never been a good chewer. This does not come easy for me. I love the taste of Shelley's Baked Ricotta (WorldAccordingtoEggFace), but it doesn't sit well for me yet, maybe because of the acid in the sauce. I am taking Omeprazol as prescribed by my surgeon. I'm also trying some of the phone apps that help with Water reminders, as I continue to struggle to get in more than 32 ounces of Fluid, which is a real no no. Today, I was not allowed to have my yogurt with GENEPRO (which I love), until I drank 16 ounces. That worked! I have a closet full of many sizes, and I have been able to shop there for clothes with tags still on them. I like that people are admiring my "new" work wardrobe rather than commenting on any weight loss. Keep in touch, June Sleevers! -

I was sleeved June 23rd, had my month pre-op appt yesterday! Incisions are healing well, I am down 25 lbs total from preop liquid diet [2 weeks] to now so 6 weeks total. I got clearance for the gym, so Ill be starting that on Monday. I have been doing ok tolerating most foods, eggs depend on the day - sometimes bothersome and I have not done well with Greek yogurt or whey Protein powder. Other than that, I am very happy with my decision and the progress I'm making! Can't wait to see the lbs and inches continue to go down! -
Ok so my preop diet consists of full liquids for 1 week preop. But to keep the carbs below 40 a day. A can of Campbell's soup has like 25g carbs. So I have 3 protein shakes, a can of soup, a couple sf jellos, some broth, and a Greek yogurt. Done. I'm so hungry I good eat part of my arm. I felt like I was going to float away yesterday w all the liquids and I'm only on day 2. Soooo, wonder why there is such a difference in everyone's preop diet? I would have consumed less carbs and less calories eating different things- like greens and skinless chicken breast. I feel bad for the people that need to do it for 2 weeks. I envy the people that get to have hard boiled eggs, and greens, etc. This preop diet is hard. I know why I need to do it and will do it. It's just super hard.

Hi I'm in UK and my surgery was same day as you . I'm on Greek yogurt and soups like Heinz cream of tomato . I too felt a bit hungry which is why I'm on these soups . Roll on Sunday when my surgeon says I can have mushy food

Thank you for your detailed explain action. I did know what glycemic index meant and I do believe for all the reasons you say a lower glycemic index is better for ME despite not having diabetes. It isn't as "addicting" with the slower metabolism and lack of sugar spikes. You have set yourself a very low threshold and I'm glad that works for you. But I don't think it's wrong to market Greek yogurt with no added sugar for weight loss. It's healthy and full of Protein and a good solid choice for many. Many would argue that it's far better for you than the artificial sweeteners in the sugar free stuff which science is showing can cause increased sugar cravings in some people -
Surgery 7 days before my Birthday

Pudding or yogurt with a candle in it? -
Is tomorrow and I'm actually nervous. It's my birthday today and 8 friends from work took me out for lunch, they ate and I had my Protein drink and it really hit me how things are going to change. I am so glad of that change for the future and my birthday next year will be different, however today I felt emotional and I ended up crying at work over little work related stuff but I am sure it was more than that...... I haven't been hungry whilst on the pre op diet (i am on day 17) but I have missed chewing and I would love my mouth to taste of more than the bottom of a sewer. So bring on the Soup and yogurt in week two!! I am excited by the change I am about to go through tomorrow and I don't give a rats ass if it's painful, difficult, downright nasty... I can see the bigger picture and I will remain positive about that. I strongly believe that positive thoughts bring positive change. I won't be a Debbie Downer and if I start whinging you have permission to point me back to this post My focus is on good health and all it will bring. I will be successful, I will have the life I want and need and this lifetime change will be so worth it. Prayers will help too, so please feel free to if you are so inclined. If not please cross your fingers and wish me well. Thanks to all for being so supportive and good luck to those starting their journey this week Kate

Pre-op: 1,200 cal, low fat, extremely low carb Midnight before VSG: nothing to eat/drink after midnight 1-5days after VSG: clear liquids 5-14 days after VSG: all liquids 2-3 weeks after VSG: puréed 3-4 weeks after VSG: soft 4 weeks-forever: reintroduce "regular" foods Of course, everything is as tolerated and are the general "guidelines"...there are no Protein powders/bars anywhere. The first few weeks are mainly working to get liquids to prevent dehydration-hence the significant weight loss for this period. Protein is always key-Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, milk with added powdered milk/egg whites if needed/wanted to up protein
