    Moving quickly

I think I am just obsessed with surgery as I am with end of grade tests for my kids. Kind of concerned- it's become a second job with me as I read posts, medical articles and follow lots of people on YouTube. Not obsessively, just helping me get through the last 68 days of monitored weight loss! Yes, I have a countdown app on my phone. I feel like a kid at Christmas! Cannot wait to start my new life as a happy, healthy and thin person!
  2. How do I change my weight on my ticker meter?
  3. Wow - awesome post! Not too wordy. Not too emotional! Just right! It's the encouragement I need. You said "Best of all, I feel normal. Most of you will know what I mean by this. I don't worry about the size and strength of chairs. I don't measure myself against others to see if I am the biggest person in the room. I just...feel...normal. " Powerful words. We ALL have done those things! I believe that when I am comfortable in my own skin, when I know I'm looking good (and I mean "put together", not anything snooty), it completely allows me to be unselfish and concentrate on others! Sometimes when we are going through this battle of the weight, we might feel guilty, like we're doing it out of vanity. Sorry charlie. IMO, it's the exact opposite. And only someone else who's been there can understand how completely self centered and self absorbing it can be to constantly - know matter where you are or what you are doing - be thinking "do they see how much my butt hangs over this chair? (ETC)". I can't wait until I hit that 'normal' feeling! (Of course, I am still 5'10", so I'm most likely always going to be the tallest woman in the room - but I'm ok with that!) Thanks! Mary

    Pre-Op Diet Confussion

My surgeon doesn't require a preop diet, or preop weight loss, just clear liquids the day before. We have the same surgery date, by the way!!

    Insurance Question

I have Aetna Managed Choice. But, it doesn't matter if someone has the same insurance company or plan as you. You need to call Aetna to see which coverage your employer has chosen, what is covered and what the requirements are. I had to have a history of obesity with no long term weight loss success and a letter of recommendation from my primary doctor. 3 consecutive monthly visits with my surgeon, psych visit, nutritionist visit, gallbladder ultrasound. But....I am not sure which of those requirements were Aetna' s and which we're my surgeon's personal requirements. If you have already chosen a surgeon, he or she should have an insurance coordinator to help you through the process but the first step is to call Aetna. Get the first and last name of the person you talk to or ask them to assign reference number to the phone call and then ask or the weight loss surgery requirements in writing. Good luck!!!!

Looking to and living for Tomorrow

As you, I gained, lost, and regained. After losing 90 "the right way" I emotionally put 65 back on...45 of that in 3 months. I was out-of-control which made my final decision asap! The Sleeve has been a wonderful tool for me. I'm 3 months out & can eat anything but alot less of it. Good luck = YOU're worth it!

With UHC - do you not have to contact the Bariatric Team at UHC? I did and I have UHC CHoice Plus as well - and did the (well still doing) the 6 months, psych, ekg, pulmonary testing and blood work. Did not have to provide 5 yr weight history and I DID contact the Bariatric Care with UHC who mailed me a list of all the documents and testing that they require prior to approval. So i knew from Day One what the process was. You should call the #800 number on the back of your ins card and ask to speak with a Bariatric Specialist - that should get you the correct answers.

So I just called the UHC member number and asked if they could give me any information regarding the progress of pre-approval for the sleeve procedure. I was told what information they request from the dr's office, etc. (which I already knew....that wasn't the question!) and then was told I would have to talk to someone in the Care Coordination department. Prior to transferring me, she looked up in the system to see if there was any additional information. In there she found an in-patient pre approval for a surgery 8/31 - 9/1. I'm guessing this might be my date! Except....... Then when she transferred me to Care Coordination, I got NOTHING in the way of information. The best this lady could tell me was that it was still under review. She couldn't tell me if they were going to request more information (since they blindsided me with height/weight requirements for the past 5 years.....that I wasn't told about the two times I called asking about coverage and requirements needed for approval!), or if there was an indication of when an approval would be made. The best she could tell me was I would know when I (or the Dr) was notified via mail or if I (or the Dr) called back to check on the status. REALLY!? Are they using the same computer system? Neither my husband nor I have surgery scheduled (I've NEVER had surgery) and there's nothing wrong with my husband that would require an in-hospital stay, let alone surgery. SO.....I prefer to believe my surgery date is going to be 8/31 and will just wait patiently for the Dr's office to call with the approval and the instructions for what procedures need to be performed prior to the surgery. Has anyone else had this type of encounter with the insurance company? I've never been through anything like this with the insurance company in the 13 years I've had coverage with them, but then the most I've ever had to have covered by them is my visits to the OBGYN and an EKG to see if I have a heart murmur. Other than that, I just pay my $10 copay, and wait for the letter showing the coverage I have and what was paid by insurance on my behalf. (I'm a lucky girl, I know I shouldn't be bitching this much....just anxious to get this started!) 43 years of being overweight, and this tool is presented to me as a MAJOR weapon in my battle against the bulge, and insurance is making me suffer with the waiting game. That's ok, when it's all said and done, I WILL be victorious in this war! Tif

Such a great story, I can totally relate. I was an average in high school, lost weight in college and since 2003 I've slowly put on 100lbs due to numerous things of overeating, working two jobs, getting married and my thyroid. I found myself eating like a pig in hiding, but eating like a bird in public. There are always an multitude of excuses. I had two friends who were sleeved earlier this year - one friend admitted to not following the plan as scheduled like working out, etc. and she has lost 60lbs since May 2011. I was sleeved on 8/17, and have lost 20lbs since 08/15. I noticed yesterday in the shower it was so much easier to scrub my feet than before and that's when it hit me, that losing weight is actually happening! I have been experiencing ALOT of emotional stress and changes before and after the surgery. I am questioning everything, "Is this where I really want to be in my life?", "Do I want to be married?", "Do I want to take the same way to work everyday?". I know it's things I have to deal with on my own so I decided to see a therapist on the side. My husband is totally supportive but something this severe makes me question everything. I too had black blood which freaked me out but was assured it was normal due to the tubes. Good luck to you!
  10. Hello all, I'm very happy to have found this great site and to have joined. I am a 44 yr old female from New England and my BMI is 42. I have gone through the entire Bariatric program, locally. I am now scheduled to meet with the surgeon next week and will be about 6 weeks scheduled out at that point. My problem is that I have not yet made a decision about which procedure I want to have done. Lap Band vs. Gastric bypass. I do not really want the GB b/c of all the potential complications that can arrise and the nutritional issues as well. And so for a long time I had chosen LB. Then I came across some YouTube "failed lap band" videos and started getting nervous that maybe I wouldnt be successful with that either. I read about and watched videos about people saying they lost very little weight, couldnt even keep Water down, had to carry bags with them for vomitting, and the biggest thing was that they couldnt eat "good" food. Only junk would stay down. Then there was the twisted ports and slippage too. Most of these people had their bands removed and opted for GB after all. I guess I just dont want to blow my one and only chance of getting help. I want to make the right decision while I have insurance and can get it covered. Does anyone have any info on those issues that they would share with me? And also advice on "how" to make the decision, understanding it is a totally personal choice. Sincerely, Poodles

Wow, I have to say your story is similar to mine (I am also 27, married at 23, and your emotions)....except I'm a woman. I was actually overweight as a child, then lost weightt in high school and became popular....which really messed with my psyche and self confidence...so when I gained over a 120lbs after high school, I felt I was worthless. Started missing functions because of embarrassment (even my five year reunion.) I am having my surgery on this Tuesday and am excited! I think I will start talking to a counselor right away to help me cope. Good luck!!

    New to the site...my story

The fill really only feels like a shot to me. You feel the puncture of the needle and that is it. the saline runs through a tube so it's not like you feel it shooting all over inside of you. I do not notice the port or the tube unless I am intentionally trying to find the port. You will have a tiny spot about 1.5" wide where the port is that is hard when you press on it. This is the injection site of the port. That is all. For everyday activities you will not notice it. I recommend reading all that you can here on LBT because being informed is the right way to go. Of course there are complications and there are issues that arise but the complications and the negatives for me were very tiny in comparison to losing 90lbs and gaining massive amounts of health benefits. Believe me you dont' lose your social/career life over it and you will live better because of it. I have much more of a social life and the band doesn't slow me down. I have quite the opposite...I go out of my way to go places, do things, and socialize. tonight I am going to a brewery with about 10 coworkers to have drinks, nibble on Snacks, and just hang out. I wouldnt have done that before. It's truely the best thing I have done.

    Cigna insurance

I had months of Weight Watchers weigh-ins, but even though they say they take those types of weigh-ins, it says by a physician or licensed dietitian. Um, I don't know about Nutra System, but Weight Watches doesn't have either, at least not the one I went to. Which is really dumb in my opinion because the insurance KNOWS they don't have that. I've been back and fourth with my clinic and insurance. I would talk to your clinic and insurance and make triple sure they will except it. I decided to not bother trying since I've pretty much done everything they've required. I am so afraid to get turned down that I'm paranoid about having everything perfect.
  14. This is my first time on a website like this and I am excited to meet new friends who are going thru what I am! Today is my 5th day of liquids pre-surgery and I have researched several different meanings of the pre "liquid diet"... my doctor is Dr. Eric Pham and i am scheduled for surgery on July 19th, 2012. I am extremely excited to have my surgery and am committed to do whatever it takes to be successful with the Lap-Band. How I understood the "liquid diet" was to have only Protein shakes, Water, Vitamin water, clear broth, liquid yogurt and sugar free Jello. I have mostly stuck to chocolate Protein Shakes, lots and lots of water and have added (4) multi-vitamins and (2) potassium and (1) Iron to my diet, as well as Emergency 1000 and Zipfizz which are extra sources of additional Vitamins in powder form (easier to add to my water/vitamin water). Can one of you please respond and let me know how you did on your 2-week "pre-surgery" liquid diet? Can you please give me some pointers as to what you did and how much weight you lost pre-surgery? Thanks so much!! xo OCPrincess
  15. #Speechless. Please read: I remember vividly waking up March 11th and being so nervous, questioning if I should go through the surgery... Dozens of fears about the unknown surfaced. I shook it off and told myself that I could do it! I carried two babies full term, so this was nothing! Now that I am 9 months out, I feel AMAZING! While I input my weigh-in for this week, I was blown away to read that I'm OVERWEIGHT and not OBESE! My BMI is almost at my target goal, I am 25LBS AWAY from my goal weight... I can just cry right now! I'm becoming a normal, healthy person and that is so valuable to me. The time I have invested in this for me has definitely been worth it! This is a good Christmas present to me from me! 124.7LBS down and I am NOT STOPPING! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Beginning my journey ????????

Congratulations and welcome. This is quite a journey. Since you haven't even met with your surgeon, I would encourage you to keep an open mind about which procedure to have. Do your research, read, and ask questions with an open mind. I started this process dead set against any weight loss surgery (mostly because I had a lot of old, out-dated preconceptions) and with lots of time and information was very happily sleeved on April 20 of this year. As long as you choose a procedure that you and your surgeon are confident is right for you, your unique body, and your lifestyle, then that is what you should do. It's not a competition. Best of luck with your journey and keep us posted on how you are doing.

    Beginning my journey ????????

Hi I'm back, I chickened out two years ago and guess what I'm exactly the same weight ????... I did weight watchers for a year and a half and at most lost 35lbs.... I went up and down the last two years playing with either same weight loss.... Now it appears I have GERD WHICH FEELS LIKE A FREAKING HEART ATTACK.... I am too afraid to eat so hopefully the pre op weight loss will be easier.. I'm confused because after my GP referred me I was told the surgeon would call me with a phone appointment... Don't know if this is a good thing or bad thing...... I hope it means the process is faster! Just want to get the ball rolling... Bypass here I come!
  19. I started my 6 month supervised weight loss in mid-November, so I've had 2 appointments thus far. I'm hoping for surgery in late-May/early-June, but that will all be dependent upon how quick my insurance is to approve (fingers crossed they will!), and when my surgeon has availability. It seems so far away right now, but I imagine it'll pass by fairly quick in the grand scheme of things.
  20. I am currently in the 6 month weight management class. I graduate feb 14th 2013. I started out in aug weighing in at 295 and now I'm 262 pounds. I love the classes. Good luck
  21. My got worse before it got better. Maybe a bit of jealousy or not knowing how to approach the new me. The MGB made me want it more but the more I wanted it the less I got it. After a talk with hubby, things got better. Skin starting to sag from weight loss but I have more energy and confidence than ever.
  22. i really wish i could say that it got better.... but no, if anything it got worse. So i was pretty vague with my post.... so let me explain better. We have been married 24 years. And in those years he has seen my weight go from 100lb to my highest at 230. He never said anything about me getting fat, but our "relationship" was strained to say the least. He never wanted me to have surgery, but i did it for me... No one else. When the weight started coming off i have to say it got better. He was "interested" in me again. Went from twice a year... to twice or more a week.... I was in heaven. I loved all the attention. But then other men started noticing me and he saw that... and didn't like it one bit. He has even said that me losing weight was the worse thing ever. We are back to once every three months or so... which is terrible because i woke up one morning with the drive of an 18 year old boy... lol. But i hang in there.... for how long, im really not sure anymore. I think it must be wonderful to have a spouse that supports you and encourages you.... so too all of you that have that.. i envy you..... I know that Envy if the Thief of happiness.... but i do.

    Im so upset!!!

For many reasons, too many and long to explain, I've learned that unexpected delays in something so important often have a reason beyond our understanding at the time. Trust that your surgery will happen at the right time for you. Sometimes, the delay is what we need to prepare for the change in life that will come. Consider this time a blessing and make it worth your while. Take this time to get in better physical shape, start an exercise program, start learning about different weight loss programs and find one to fit your lifestyle. Research about this new tool you are getting. I promise there is still much you do not know. Use this website as a great tool to do that research. Find in your area others who have, or are getting, the lap-band. If you keep busy with these kinds of tasks, you will find the two-month delay will go by very quickly.

    My journey

I had my sleeve done May 28, 2012 in Mexico. The best thing I have ever done!!!! My starting weight was 255lbs ( my heaviest in Jan 2012) I was down to 238 by surgery and now am at 180lbs!!!! So happy to be only 40lbs to my goal weight!!! I started wearing xxl shirts and size 40 jeans. Today I put on size 31 jeans and can wear Lg and some Med shirts!!! I am stoked still. Lol. I do worry about losing too much weight thou. I had originally hoped to be at 120lbs, but since my cloths are already smaller than I anticipated, I kind of think I would be too small at that weight. I had watched one utube video and the lady had met her goal and then kept losing. That freaked me out a bit, and am not sure how you can prevent that. I find that food does not taste the same anymore and I'm not interested in sweet food or greasy food anymore. Milk DOES NOT sit well at all and even though I feel like vomiting after eating any dairy, I can't throw anything up. My brother had the same surgery 3 days prior to mine, and he vomits a lot. I'm not sure if it is normal that I can't. ( I had the flu, and even though felt like I had to, I just couldn't). I also have had a lot of hair loss which bothers me like crazy. I find it hard to eat protein too, as it just doesn't taste good, and sits heavy:( so that may be the cause of that. I find I forget to eat until I start feeling light headed at the end of my day. I very rarely get hungry, but get heart burn ( acid reflux) all the time, which is made worse after I eat:/ I still have to take antacids to help with those symptoms. I can't wait to be able to get the extra skin removed. Lol but have been wrapping regularly to tighten the skin up. So far it is working amazingly!!! My problem area that seems to bug me the most is my inner thighs that reminds me of an extra " butt"... Lol. That is the only area that is not responding as well to the wraps:/
  25. I have really been SLACKING on taking my vitamins the only vitamins I was told to take was a multivitamin, iron, and calcium/vitamin d. However I have added b12 because I see that it is needed as well. My main concern is how do you take all these vitamins in a days time I am not a morning person but I do see that if I don't take my vitamins my body is tired my eyes feel strange and I am always thirsty (not so really hungry) I am a month post-op and I don't want any issues in the long run but I feel some may come up. & do anyone still have to sip their drink? I don't really I know everyone body is different but I want to learn how to maintain my weight even when I reach my goal. What did anyone eat a month post op because I still can't find the right foods that agree with me so most I eat one meal a day when I suppose to eat 3 and it is usually a protein drink/ tuna or a grilled chicken piece. This journey is really a LEARNING PROCESS! But I am determined not to give up!!!
