Are u asking if the pain from the band goes away after revision surgery? If so, YES! I was banded almost 4 yrs ago. It slipped a year ago but left in place and just unfilled by 1/2. It finally herniated about 5 mths ago and had to be totally unfilled. I had pain/vomiting with just about everything I ate until my totaly unfill. I became a proficient vomiter. Hubby knew to take me seriously if I ordered him to pull the car over! I got it up, problem solved. Until my band slipped because of frequent vomiting. For the 1st 4 weeks, I was terrified of vomiting with my sleeve, convinced it would cause a leak. Since I was on liquids, I rarely felt like vomiting anyway. I've vomited once (from eating too fast) since being sleeved. Yesterday, I ate fast once again and felt like it would probly feel better to stick my finger down my throat but decided to ride it out. It only lasted maybe 5 minutes (whereas with my band, the pain would have worsened until I brought it up) and then I was better. Ice cream is the only food I've found that doesn't agree with my new tummy. Gives me tummy cramps (totally unrelated to band pain) and I keep trying it over and over. I'm a slow learner, for sure! To answer ur ? about the pain going away with the band - yes. that specific pain goes away. There may be a new pain (yesterday I noticed pain a little lower down, in my actual stomach from eating a little too much popcorn at the movies. It was always higher up in my esophagus with my band. Now it's actually in my stomach) Good luck with ur revision! You'll be glad to be rid of the contraption...

Do You Stick With A Strict Food Diet?
marfar7 replied to Ree's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ok, let me start by saying: I followed my drs orders strcitly during the time of healing (1st 8 wks). I didn't cheat once. I was so scared that my starting food too early would cause a leak. I was afraid to eat Jello for fear it was too solid. That said.... Im now 4 mths post op and I eat whatever I want, just literally only 6-8 bites. I eat bread, potatoes, Pasta, Cookies, candy, etc. I dind im cranky when counting anything. Seems too much like a diet to me and that's what I had wls to begin with. To stop all the dieitng. Im proud of the fact that I've lost almost 100 lbs (most of it lost from the lapband. Revision 4 mths ago) eating everything. I still eat burgers (I can eat about 1/3 of an In and Out burger), tacos (1 Del Taco small taco), pizza (1/2 regular pc), fries (about 4-6), and cookies (2 small or 1 med). Gone is the day where I could devour 1/2 batch of cookie dough, 2 burgers, 5 tacos, and 1/2 pizza. And gone r my ice cream days. Im a slow learner cuz everytime I try ice cream I get severe cramping and diarrhea. I think I've now learned my lesson. I may get bashed for posting that I eat whatever I want, as we r sposed to be teaching the newbies the importance of healthy eating. I do round out my melas with plenty of Protein, I eat lotso veggies and drink tons of wtaer. If im steadily (slowly, very slowly) and im happy with my progress (im now in a sz 8 and if I never lost another lb id be happy) why should I count every calorie that goes into my body? Only my opinion. If I could only eat protein/veggies, count religiously, stay away from all carbs I would've never even eeded wls in the 1st place. Good luck to u. -

Hi all. Just posting my few cents in here as someone who is (finally) getting the sleeve on the 17th of this month. This is my first day of the 2 weeks pre op diet. Boy I am peeing a lot! I am having a Lap Band to Sleeve revision. Got turned down by my insurance company and it went to the 2nd stage of appeal where with the help of Lindstrom Obesity Advocacy they reversed the denial. This happened about 2 weeks ago so everything is happening very quickly which I am thankful for. I'm really excited about this and from reading so many posts on here I feel like I have a better idea of the challenges ahead. Especially those psychological ones in the first month or so. But as of right now I'm not freaked out about it I'm, just looking so forward to the outcome after the initial challenges and then the ongoing challenges of having to actually do the work required. But I'm excited about that too. I'll be 59 in July; have adopted 2 grandkids (3 and 5 year olds) and I simply need to be there for them. I'm doing this for me and for them, which is for me too! I need to be around a lot longer than all this weight will allow. And I want to have a life with them that this weight won't allow either. Plus I have an awesome wife who has been with me for 14 years and she needs me around too and needs to experience a much better life than this weight will allow. SO THE WEIGHT HAS GOT TA GO!!! Thanks for all of you who post your experiences on here as it is very inspirational and supportive; even hearing the real life struggles many of you are having. But with the help of God; these and other supports we can all do this thing. Jack

I'm thinking about going to Mexico for a revision, Band to Sleeve, if things don't work out insurance wise. I'm wondering how hard it was to get on a plane and fly home post op? Sounds pretty awful. Which doctors are the most experienced in revisions? Also, how long did it take once you made the decision to get in for surgery?

Hi, I can relate to all these stories. I only had my band for 16 months but had all kinds of problems. My Dr did every test and could not find a problem. My band even lost 4-5cc's of fill on a few occasions. I vomited all the time and had discomfort with everything I ate. My insurance approved the removal with revision due to severe gerd and band slip even though there was not proof of a slip. I am almost 8 weeks out and feel soooo much better than with the band. I am eating better with no pain, occasional stomach ache, and I feel great. I had a low BMI at revision I was 164.5 now down to 144. Best of luck I will send good prayers your way!

I agree. When I had the band in 2008 I was told it was in for life, like a hip implant. No worries, it was safe and could stay until I wanted it out. In April of this year, 5 years out, I started vomiting even more than usual. I started researching again and I found so much information about 5 year life span, 10 years tops. It was such a hard decision to revise to sleeve. Those were my husbands exact words, "So what are they going to say about the sleeve in 5 years? " My choices were band out and go it alone, or revise to sleeve. I kept changing my mind. Who knows what kind of procedures are comming in the future? Lose the band, work hard to maintain, and see what the future holds. The thing that pushed me to revise was insurance. We are going to be losing out good insurance next year for a self employed plan. Most likely a plan that will not cover any bariatric surgery. The first two weeks after revision I want to tell everyone pre op to run, don't do it, this is terrible, no one should have this surgery. I am 4 weeks out today and I'm adjusting. The funny thing is there is a question I never asked pre op. I never even thought of it till after. I guess I assumed that after my stomach heals it is a strong as before. But now I think not. Now I have read stuff that makes me think my stomach will always be weaker that my stomach pre op. Sounds silly. But it is just something I never thought about. And again I don't know for sure, I will ask at my 6 week follow up. And I read about sleeve constantly for months leading up to my revision. I am a strong believer in everything happens for a reason. I think if you had erosion after only two years, and could not revise to sleeve. Then there must be something even better in your future. Or if you do get the sleeve, then it must be happening later for a reason. Best wishes to you. For all of us on this roller coaster. Life is one wild and crazy ride!
-
Let me know how it goes for you. Does your dr think he can do a revision on you? How bad was your erosion?
-
Wow! What a crazy situation. Your band doc wants to do a sleeve revision, and your sleeve doc wants mini bypass.... makes my head spin, lol. I really don't know anyone that has had a revision to their sleeve, but I know that it can be done. Did your Sleeve doc give you a reason for making the sleeve so large? I'm not sure I would want to go back to him if I were already dissatisfied with the prior surgery he did. I wonder if you might get some better answers in the Revision section here. I wish I could help you out, Maybe someone will have some solid advice for you.
-
My surgeon won’t even do the band anymore because of the risks and potential to revise it. Most insurances (if your insurance covers it) will only pay for one surgery.
-
I had my lapband for four years, just had a sleeve revision due to continous vomiting. Post-op day 5 for me, drinking only fluids now. Cold fluids are killing me, when will that feeling go away?? Any advice about the future??? Thanks
-
My insurance has approved me for a band to sleeve revision. My surgery date is 9/7/10 (5 days before my 5 year band anniversary). I wanted to thank everyone here for your kind words, understanding, support and advise. It has meant a lot!!

I'm right behind you for my revision and I had dilation too! I was banded in 2003 for the first time, then after a really bad slip and erosion, I had to have my band removed in 2005... but lucky me? They punctured my stomach during surgery! I was in the hospital for 10 days and had a pretty tough recovery, but was eventually rebanded as a self pay in 2006. My insurance changed during that year, so what started as a "she's too thin to be approved for another band" turned into "we don't cover any bariatric, even if it would prevent eminent death" after the new year's plan was activated. After eventually paying out of pocket for my second band, I just never had near the success with it as I did my first band. I had put back on the 100# that I lost, plus another 20 in that unbanded year. After almost 7 years with that second band, I'm only down the additional 20lbs, leaving me with 100# to lose again (still lol). I did at one point lose almost 50 of the 120 with the second band, but after 2 pregnancies, all but 20 of that is back and no matter how many adjustments, I just can't keep losing. Since I'm pre-op, I don't have much sleeve advice to offer, other than what I've learned with success and failure with my band over the last 10 years. I think surgery itself can be a very easy recovery if you follow all of the pre-op and post-op instructions. After talking to tons of revision patients, and just sleeve patients in general... Walk walk walk after surgery!! The mantra is sip sip sip, walk walk walk, repeat!! As far as eating post op and long term success, the people with the most success are the people that stuck to their surgeons plan. If it's liquids for two weeks, stay on liquids for two weeks, even if other patients can eat soft foods 7 days out. Don't negotiate your plan, just stick to it. And keep up with the exercise. It sounds like you're already ahead of most of us in that department! lol But as far as pain, I wouldn't worry about that. I know it's a legitimate fear, and one that I've spent some time on myself, but most people say it's mostly pain free, just uncomfortable. The first day or so when it actually hurts, you'll be medicated in the hospital! And most people attribute any actual "pain" to gas, which will be minimal if you walk walk walk!! Otherwise, the patients that have surgery in Mexico (like I am doing) actually aren't even sent home with narcotics, just a anti-inflammatory pain reliever, and they have all said that it's been more than enough to control their pain! Good luck! Let us know how surgery goes!

Altering my body and still fat?! Help [emoji1317]
lsubabe33 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
On September 11, 2015 (less than 2 months from 2 years.) I opted to have the Bariatric sleeve done. Starting weight was 248, my height is 5'2 small build, diabetic among other things. So naturally I was morbidly obese... Fast forward to now, I have ONLY lost 75lbs..([emoji24]) I weigh in at 173 today, still in a unhealthy percentile for my build. I haven't lost more than the usually give or take +1 or -1 lb each week in over a YEAR!! ([emoji36]) I have tried RESTARTS. I go down a lb. but right back up a few days later. I'm not sure what's worst, me wasting my time on having surgery. Or having surgery and not losing near the amount of weight you want and/or need to lose. It extremely HARD for me to except, after all the work I put in for little results. I'm not happy!! I shouldn't be looking into a revision this soon or at all!! I often say " I ALTERED MY BODY and I'M STILL FAT AND UNHEALTHY!! (Who does that? 🤦🏼♀️) - has anyone had this issue? What did you do? -is this normal? Or just another fail on my part? - what can I do? I'm I a total loss? BTW, please don't kick me while I'm down. I don't want to hear about going back to the DR. or NUT. My DR is no longer doing the surgery due to insurance & hospital going into litigation. Also, I no longer have insurance, so running to the doctor is very costly, and not an option. Things I do daily: Protein shakes Drink water ( as hard as it is) Constantly active Eat ( small meals of course) [emoji6] Thanks for taking the time to help! It's greatly appreciated, coming from others w/ similarities. -

August 29 here in Texas. Being revised from lapband to RNY. Have been unfilled for 5 years now and regained all the weight I lost. Ready for a new start!

I'm excited and nervous! I'm going in tomorrow to have a band to sleeve revision. My surgery is at 3pm and I have to check in at 1pm. Send prayers or good vibes my way please!!

I have read so many posts about people getting the sleeve and many having to do a revision to bypass because of GERD. From what I understand and what my surgeon said (I had originally though about getting the sleeve but he quickly recommended a bypass because of my GERD so that's what I'll be getting without a doubt!) if you have GERD before surgery it may not take it away after getting the Sleeve, and it could even be worse after. I just talked to a friend of mine who is wanting a Sleeve and also has GERD but didn't know that. I know there are probably some who had GERD before their Sleeve and now don't but I wonder what the percentage is of those who got the Sleeve with GERD and still had it after, if not worse, and also had to get a revision because of it. And especially why Doctors aren't advising their patients of this. Did your Dr advise you of this too? I just wanted other people to be aware of this in case their Dr didn't tell them

Hi all, So I had the revision surgery to RNY on the 24th and I initially had no problem drinking. As of yesterday I am having major issues. I started protein shakes Friday and I'm pretty sure I dumped on the evening shake. I thought maybe I took my vitamin and shake too close together. But now I am also having severe pain when I drink water. It feels as though my stomach is being stabbed and twisted. I've tried both warm and cold and get the same results. Is this normal?
-
I haven't had a revision or rny but I assume if the pain has continued in the last six hours you have contacted your surgeon's or doctor's office to make sure everything is okay/
-
Yeah surgery done. So happy was able to have the revision. Dr said my band was wrapped around my esophagus like a necklace. Extra day in hospital cause my blood pressure dropped way low but going home today. So happy I did this just getting down sips of Water with no problems just can't stomach broth for Breakfast. Hope everyone is doing well Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Final Insurance Approval Timeline
RJC5197 replied to pammieanne's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just got call from Insurance and am now approved. It was a week ago Dr. sent in paperwork, and first round Ins said there is a 6 month wait. But after explaining my issues and need for revision soon, they quickly approved. Now just waiting for surgery date. Hoping for mid to late April. -
Recommended Bariatric Surgeons in Los Angeles
RickM replied to s2dm's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Another good one to talk to would be Dr. Ara Keshishian in Glendale. If you need a revision, he would most likely go for a DS rather than a bypass as that is more his specialty. But since the DS uses the sleeve as its basis, that means that he has been doing them a lot longer than most bariatric surgeons, so if there is something wrong with your sleeve, he would be the one to be able to fix it rather than revise it to something else. By your description, it sounds like your sleeve may not have really been done correctly, so a correction rather than a revision may well be the answer. Typically, a revision from the sleeve to the bypass doesn't do a lot to correct a poor weight loss problem as the sleeve and bypass are so similar in their metabolic strength; if one really needs a stronger solution, the DS is the way to go, but it sounds like a simple resleeve may the the answer for you. Good luck, -
Band to sleeve AETNA

Hi - I got my revision through Aetna. I had to do a three month supervised diet. Had to have a BMI over 40 at the end. I wish you the best!
