  1. Hi All, I had the sleeve four years ago. I never had any problem with acid reflux until I got the sleeve. Up until about a year ago, I was able to control it by taking one Prilosec every morning. If I missed that Prilosec, I was absolutely miserable. Now, one Prilosec a day doesn't work anymore. I am taking two a day, sucking down rolaids and carry saltine crackers with me everywhere. I have heard from many people that revising to bypass helps this issue. Between that, and the fact that I have finally accepted that I really need the benefits of malabsorption, etc., I really want to revise. However, this is 100% going to depend on whether or not I can get insurance approval. So, basically I am interested in hearing if any of you are revisions from sleeve, did it help you with your reflux and have you found you have had more success with the bypass.
  2. Susan, I had the lap band in 2006. I did very well with it for 2 years. I went from 200 lbs down to 130 lbs. At that point I was not able to eat much without constant pain. So, in 2009 I revised to the sleeve. I loved the sleeve!!! But, in 2012 I started having severe bile reflux and vomiting up blood. The doc said the only thing I could do was revise to the bypass. So, after fighting the revision for over a year, I had the sleeve to bypass done 7 weeks ago (Jan 8th). It has been a very difficult recovery. I finally am feeling good. Actually, I am now feeling great!! I dropped a little more weight even though I was fine at the weight I was. I am now 123 lbs. I had my surgery done in Mexicali, Mexico with the same doctor who did my sleeve. Hope all goes well with you.

    Newbie

I had my lapband for four years, just had a sleeve revision due to continous vomiting. Post-op day 5 for me, drinking only fluids now. Cold fluids are killing me, when will that feeling go away?? Any advice about the future??? Thanks
  4. I was banded in 07 and unlike many others on here I didn't hate my band, it changed my life and I will always credit it for that and never regret it. I lost 90 lbs and kept it off for 6 years with the exception of about 20 lbs that i fluctuated up and down. I decided to revise to sleeve for more consistency and I really just wanted a change and honestly I hated that feeling of being stuck !!! I was sleeved on 9/20 and I have to say I am loving life !!! I'm doing it right this time as far as vitamins and protein first and even though the 4 weeks of liquids post op was the hardest thing Iv ever had to do now that I'm on softer foods I couldn't be happier with my decision!!! I feel full !!! I haven't felt stuck, I haven't thrown up... Nothing !! Recovery was a breeze and I went back to work after 3 days off, I do get very sick from eating sweets which is a big change for me having had a huge sweet tooth prior to all this but I'm okay with that. I'm 10 lbs from my goal and I feel better than I have in years as far as health goes ... Anyway I just wanted to share for anyone who may be struggling with the decision to revise. I may have liked my band, but I LOVE my sleeve !!!!

    Duodenal switch .Kind of scared.

I'm 8 weeks out and have no regrets. My common channel is one and a half cm longer in length, so 150 cm as opposed to 100 cm, which means I absorb a little more than the average DS patient. They warned me about foul smelling gas and bathroom visits, but I haven't noticed any of that, perhaps due to my longer common channel. In fact, since I revised from the Lap-Band, my gas is way down. One bit of information no one told me about was that if you eat something that has too much fat or grease, you might see orange oil float to the top of the toilet. This freaked me out the first time it happened because no one had mentioned it. Might seem like a small issue, but whoever sees orange oil in the toilet? I still have to make food choices because I'm still able to eat carbs, but to be successful I have cut them way back. I'm finally seeing results in the mirror and in my clothes. It's a different life but one I can live with.
  6. My first psych eval was pretty hilarious to be honest. I had to take a test on a computer with all the crazy questions like "would you like to be a florist?" "Is your dad a good man?" There were also True/False and Multiple choice questions that were pretty out there. It was pretty much profiling my personality, and my behavioral tendencies. Plus, I had to answer some standard mental health questions as well. I had to answer the same anxiety, depression, suicide questions. I had never been to a psych either, and was nervous. After the testing, I met with him, and we discussed the WLS of my choice, the pros and cons, my lifestyle, and why I chose LapBand. I also discussed how my husband was handling the decision I had made to have WLS. It wasn't stressful or embarassing once I sat down in the chair and actually talked to him. For my revision surgery, I had to meet with a different psych only bc my husband was deployed during my surgery dates. They wanted to make sure I could handle major surgery even without my husband home. I didn't have to take any tests with her. We just discussed my complications with the band, why I wanted to revise, and how I was going to "cope" without my husband.
  7. I am in the process of having my first appointment. I was wondering besides the mandatory weight loss if you had to do all the other things for the revision that you had to do for the band? Will I need another psych eval and blood test? Will I need another chest x-ray? I am currently waiting for my previous surgeon to send my info to the new one. How long was your wait from first appointment to your revision? Thank you for your answers.
  8. hi carbgrl if i had a bad toothache, went to the dentist, and he kind of screwed up the filling - when it got worse, i wouldn't go back for the filling to be fixed by the same dentist.. How bout you??? kathy 12/15/11 btw - i never had to have a lapband/sleeve revision
  9. Ask your surgeon for his practice's stats. What I was told is that the general info out there is that revisions don't lose as well. The theory is that they have become accustomed to feeling overful and are more likely to stretch the pouch. My surgeon's office is however reporting similiar/same results for revisions as for "virgin" sleevers. I think it is because they focus heavily on education and follow up, but that is just a theory.
  10. Has anyone gone through the process of being approved for a revision surgery with Blue Cross Blue Shield of New England in Mass? Any thoughts? Were you approved? How long did it take?
  11. Hi out there, I had my band to sleeve revision on May 29th. I'm doing pretty good so far. I'm on pureed foods, trying hard to get my liquids in, and feeling full. I'm very happy with my decision to go ahead and do the revision. My main concern is that I still have a lump where my port was "dug out" and there's another lump near the incision where my stomach was taken out. You can't see the lumps, but feel them. I think I still look kindov pregnant or something. Is that normal? I'm walking and don't seem to be having gas issues. Sometimes I'll get a sharp pain in those areas (of the lumps) when I move a certain way or roll onto my side when sleeping. Is this normal? I have a clinic-1 month follow up- appt. on Friday and I'll ask. I don't have a fever or any drainage from the incisions...everything looks healed. It just bothers me that these lumps are there. Do you think they could be hematomas from surgery and if so...will they go away or does the surgeon have to drain them? Ugh. Thanks for any input.

    REVISION Stories

There's an entire forum for what you ask for: http://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/394-band-to-gastric-sleeve-revisions/
  13. I've been banded since Oct 2012. After only losing 50lbs and gaining 10 back my Dr recommended the Sleeve for me. I'm scheduled for my revision the 30th of this month. If you have had a revision I would love to know your starting weight before revision, and progress. (With time frame) also how do you feel? My current weight is 218lbs. I hope to lose 60lbs.
  14. I'm scheduled for lap band to sleeve revision on August 8. At my psych eval, the therapist admitted to having had a bypass (she's still quite thin). She said that after the surgery and weight loss that my life would completely change. She then said my life would change in ways I couldn't imagine. So my question is this: what major life changes occurred for post-opers, and did they have changes that they could not imagine before surgery?

    Help again!

As some of you know, I discovered I have a leak. Well today, he filled me up, and on Monday he is going to check if it leaked again. Then I will have a revision. Well, since my fill today, I've been throwing up all liquids I've put in my body. At first I was sipping some vitamin water, that was fine. Then, I had some cofee, and a protein shake and I started getting very burpy and hicuppy. I didn't feel well, so I tried to sleep, and couldn't because I felt acid reflux, which I never felt before, and also I would wake up and start choking in a panic. So, I am wondering if its just swollen, or if I am too full. Now, I am going in on Monday to see if its still leaking, should I wait until then, or should I call him tomorrow and tell him I think I might be too tight? I probably have a leak, should I just let it leak out these next few days, making the fill less tight??? Thanks for advice, this is the first time I've experienced this. I don't want to make the band slip!!!!!!! My worst fear!:help:

    Close to goal?

Haven’t been on here lately. I was banded in 09. Revised to sleeve in May. I have bee heavy all my life. High was 330. Low with band 230. Sleeved at 250. My goal was 225. Now at 210. My nutritionist, dr and trainer All told me to no longer try to loose weight. Just eat well, continue to exercise, tone and build more muscle and see where my weight settles out. They even said they would work with me if I loose too much. This is so very foreign for me. I’m 6 ft tall and now ware 34-36?slim fit pants. Large or xl(slim) shirts. I still think I’m heavy. Trying to get a handle on this. Know it’s a good problem to have. How did you handle it
  17. I am going through the same thing right now with one of my incisions. Six and a half weeks out, and one of them is still not healed. The other four healed beautifully. I was also told that there was an underlying suture which was the cause. I have to go in to my surgeon's office every 2-3 days now for them to change the dressing and re-pack the wound. It's small, about the size of the head of an eraser, but it is going to leave a nasty scar. Fortunately, my surgeon told me that once it is completely healed, she can do a small procedure to revise the scar and it will look like all the other ones when it heals. So that's good news. But in the meantime, I have a hole in my stomach and a big stupid bandage that you can see through my clothes. Not cool. BUT, it is the only complication I have had, so I consider myself so lucky- it could be so much worse.
  18. I am having a band to sleeve revision on October 20th. I am super excited and any advice would be welcome. I had an easy recovery after the lap band surgery but my band slipped after a year and I am now getting the sleeve. Thanks in advance.
  19. The doctors and staff are great. I had my revision on August 15 in Puerto Vallarta. Your in good hands.

    VSG vs. other optional surgeries

I've had both. VSG was not available when I had my band so in my mind, the band was the lesser of 2 evils between RNY and the band. My story is horrific, and it was only in my body for 8 months before I HAD to revise. Keeping it in my body was not an option. Of course, I was drawn to it for the same reasons as many because it's marketed to be safe. I knew the complications, but I also thought I could beat the risks like a few other band patients did. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. When I had to revise, I could have easily had RNY, but I fought for the sleeve. It might be permanent, but it's also the least complicated. It's a straight forward surgery. The recovery is often bumpy with getting liquids in, but it would be temporary. I'm over 2 years out with VSG, and love life. It's the best thing I ever did for myself and my family. I always tell people to think twice, cut once. The stats on the band are getting worse. There have been recalls, speculation on class action lawsuits are stirring in the lapband community, and the number of complications are on the rise. Best wishes in your research ! ! !

What do I do now???? Help Please!!!!

Appeal the decision. Make sure your surgeon sent in something written that states he believes you need the revision because of the band failure. I would also have your primary care Dr. write a letter and give that to your surgeon's office to submit with the appeal. YOU should also write a letter stating everything you've been through because of this. ANYTHING you have that documents your issues since having the band will only help your case. Hopefully someone else will be able to chime in with more advice. GOOD LUCK! I know how much that band sucks when it malfunctions. It's not an easy thing to have to live with.
  22. In general, any truly emergency situation will be covered by all carriers, no matter what the reason. There's just too much liability otherwise. That said, the treatment might be limited to an emergency unfill or whatever is necessary just to stabilize the situation; it's unlikely a carrier that excluded the surgery in the first place will pay for a revision surgery, even if it is necessary.

    Interesting, what people notice.

Same here. Had port revision on 9/30. New port is in basically the same place and definitely doesn't stick out as much. I'm still waiting for some swelling to go down to see the final result.

Had port revision done today at Raleigh-Duke In Raleigh, NC.. Little to no pain. Dr. Kerri Seymour is the best..

    lapband or VBG??

Hi, Thanks for your reply. Actually, I'm American but have been living in Holland a number of years. My surgeon is in Belgium. The surgery staples your tummy but it is definitely reversable. No cutting involved - although yes, the staples could 'tear' you. :cry I've just email my Doctor (his aid at least) and asked his thoughts about switching. I like the lapband but from my research so far: - I worry about being HUNGRY and not being able to eat those 6 weeks before my first fill - I worry about having to get a fill or an unfill until I hit my 'sweet spot' - I worry about slippage but with the VGB .. it would more like a tear .. which is WORSE when I think about it.... :omg: Ummm now I feel a little silly because it seems like small things that I'm worrying about. I guess what got me in this line of thinking is ... I want to lose weight FOR SURE .. not for 'maybe' and when I read too many bad lspband stories, I'm afraid I'll end up like them. I'm self-pay so I don't want to go in for a revision and pay all over again ... I just want the weight OFF. (don't we all!) No, RNY is over the top, My doctor advises - there's no sense in going that dramatic as my goal is 90 pounds AT MOST. I agree. I guess I just needed to talk to someone about this... thanks for letting me vent. I'll figure it out. :decision: I must say the VBG forums on www.obsesity.com is like NOTHING as compared to this lapband forum! I log in a read EVERY DAY as I obsess over my weight EVERYDAY. Thanks again!
