    Band to bypass approved today

That is just wonderful news. I am so happy for you and excited that you're having success with your revision. Personally, I'm tired of waiting. I refuse to pay for this myself since my insurance policy clearly covers revisions. They're just thinking that I won't pursue it the same as many others -- but they don't know who they're messing with. I WILL WIN THIS APPEAL! I WILL WIN THIS APPEAL! I WILL WIN THIS APPEAL!

    Band to bypass approved today

I just had band to rny revision on May 7. Mine was covered by insurance, thank goodness! I had struggled with the band since 2008 and originally lost aprox. 60 lbs but then slowly creeped up 40. Now 6 weeks after the bypass I am at the lowest weight that I have been at in 15 years! Dropped under 220 for the first time! Even though I've had a few complications... Battling a stricture. (Everyone in the endoscopy department of the hospital knows me now). This has been the best decision I could have made! No more running to throw up after eating 3 bites of chicken! It definitely gets better every day ????

Not as much restriction as expected!

Thanks!! I am glad to hear from someone else with a revision. Thinking about it after reading your post I do realize that I am comparing the two restrictions.... With my lap band I could hardly get water down much less food and with the sleeve it is different. I started soft foods today and can totally feel the restriction now.... And I must say I love it! So much better then the band!! Thanks for your post! ????

    Band to bypass approved today

Did insurance pay for your revision, if I may ask? If you only had the last 20 LBs to lose, did you have problems getting approved? Co-morbidities? I have 65 LBs to lose with major GERD, asthma, arthritis, knee replacement, kidney cancer, pre-diabetic, high lipids, horrible back pain, not to mention vomiting and sliming even with all restriction removed--yet have been told by UHC the revision is not medically necessary but "patient failure." I've hired Lindstrom Obesity Advocacy to handle my appeal, but am curious about your history. You look quite beautiful in your photo! Thanx! I was self pay for my band and for my revision. I had my band unfilled and had to gain 40 pounds to qualify to be revised (crazy) but I did it and lost all the 40 plus 30 more. I was revised because my band had eroded. The band was a success for me until then. Best money I ever spent. I look it like this.. Most people don't bat an eye to buy a new car but to invest in your body is crazy.. I find my body the very best thing to invest in. I could drive a junk car and wouldn't care. Well you look absolutely amazing. thank you soooo much!!!

Not as much restriction as expected!

Hello I am a revision as well. Often as having a revision, we compare restriction with the band as I did. Having our type of surgery as I did in the same surgery (revision) having scar tissue plays a part in that. The Sleeve is a sterner master and I was worried when I could eat more after a month. Liquids do go down quicker and each food type has the ability to have different type of restriction. Liquids= no restriction/ Soft food= moderate restriction/ Solid foods depending on what kind= restriction. I am 2 months out and have been a slow loser with the 3 week stall and for my age and pre-menopause, taking BP pills ALL have played a part in my weight lost. Not to forget your "bougie" size, the measuring device used to measure your new stomach size. ALL of these factors play a part. Drink plenty of Water, Protein a must and watch slider foods that will not support your weight lost. The sleeve works you just have to work with it and not compare yourself with others. Remember this is no the band , thank God and we have a new stomach that we have to get use to. I have restriction and I weight out my food and STOP willfully when I feel the full signal, Over eating with the sleeve is out of bounds as it is nothing like the band, as stated this is sterner master and will not allow you to get away with eating around it. Work the Sleeve it is truly a great tool! I remember being angry as I was 2 months out and only 15lb loss. Well since then I have lost 4lbs and it just came off.
  10. I was in the same boat, and I'm now a month out from my revision! My husband was leery of my decision to revise, but in the end he could see how much my weight was affecting my mental health. He asked many questions of the surgeon and was pleased with the answers. What does your husband dislike about the idea? There were about six months between my deciding to revise and actually having the procedure, what with all the waiting for appointments and whatnot, so you probably have time to commit. I will say that I was so unhappy with the band that I probably would have had it taken out even without the revision. The bypass so far has been what I wanted the band to be but never was. Some people love their bands, I realize, but it did not cooperate with my body and I was always in pain of some sort (standard reflux, choking on acid, food-related pain, etc). Good luck!
  11. I've had my band for 7 years and think it is probably going to come out. I have horrible acid reflux and get spasms in my esophogus. I also experience horrible cramping in my legs and feel very tired all the time. I've seem numerous doctors and none of them came really pinpoint what is going on. I've always thought in the back of my head that it could be related to the band because i never experienced problems like this until I got the band. I go see the doctor in 8 days and if he recommends the GB revision I want to say yes but hubby is scared for me to have the surgery. I told him I am very worried that I will gain all of my weight back if I don't have something to help me but he's scared. Does anyone have any words of encouragement for me?

  14. If you have UHC, be prepared for possible denial the first, possibly even second time. BUT DO NOT give up! I REPEAT: DO NOT GIVE UP!!! UHC is notorious for denials thinking the insurer will give up! If your policy states WLS is covered, they can not refuse to pay. I am fighting with them now for a revision from band to bypass. I've had to hire Lindstrom Obesity Advocacy to appeal and they are very confident--no promises, mind you, but this is what they do. Please let me know how it goes and I will keep you posted as well.

  16. What was the most helpful book you have found regarding the emotional side of the journey? I had a band for almost 3 years and lost around 90 pounds. Then revised to the sleeve after my band slipped about a year and a half ago and lost another 20 pounds. I still have about 25 pounds to go and keep losing and gaining the same 10 pounds. I think at this point my issues are around head hunger and emotional eating and am looking for a good book on this topic. Please let me know if there is one or two you have found especially helpful. I've heard a few people mention When Food Is Love and Women, Food and God by Geneen Roth but wanted to reach out to all of you before just randomly selecting many books. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm really struggling and feel like I could easily slip back into my old habits permanently and am desperate for something to get me back on track.

    I want to fly!

Kiki, I am right there with you. Lap band, lost 100 lbs then my band slipped. I was converted to sleeve on May 28. So far I have lost 18lbs. i am so glad to have that port out. No more stuck food and vomiting. I just hate that now I have to lose this weight once again. This time will be for good. Sticking to this plan forever. So far the hardest part is giving up my Diet Pepsi and bread. I wish you both great success and I hope your revision goes as smooth as mine has.

    I want to fly!

If you want to fly, you'll fly. You already know it's not going to be easy. But nothing worth it ever is, is it? When is your revision?
  20. Hello, My name is Edwana. I am a 37-year-old African-American female. I have been struggling with my weight my whole life. You name it and I've tried it. I've been on a roller coaster ride and I desperately want to get off. I thought I had reached the departure point when I had the band surgery in 2010. Imagine how crushed I was when that tool never really worked for me from the start. I know that I am an emotional eater. .I work in the helping profession and I'm constantly bogged down by my own and others' emotional problems. My go to escape and happiness maker (for a moment) has been food. I definitely feel like I have matured over the last few years. I've learned to take it slow, to sit down while eating cut out fast food & enjoy cooking. I am also learning not to own things. I even have been exercising rack rolling for the last four months doing CrossFit. Nevertheless, I know I need assistance. Even though I'm mobile and exercise, the stress on my knees every day from this almost 300 pounds it carries is slowly killing me. Not to mention the sporadic back pain and three blood-pressure meds I have to take. Part of me feels like I should be able to get this weight off to just show some self-control. But I am hoping that the band to sleeve revision surgery will give me that push that I need to keep going. I have a motivational board set up on Pinterest. I feel like that's when I was most successful; when I pin a positive affirmation & reflect on each day. The one below is one that continuously crosses my mind and describes me. I so want this surgery to work but have some fears since I have been unsuccessful in the pass. Nevertheless, I know that I half to succeed and that I want to succeed. I want to fly off the roller coaster!!!!!!!

    Band to bypass approved today

Hey Taysidebell, I just had my revision from band to bypass on the 19th of June. I get discharged June 21, which is today. Everything went really well, not as bad as I thought it would be. I was nervous and scared too, wondering if I made the right decision. I have all these negative people in my life to do this or do that but, their not understanding the big picture of high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes. When you've tried everything else. I think it's time to let some people go. But you will be just fine. Have no worries.

    What about the boobies!?

This topic interest me as well. Being a double mastectomy breast cancer survivor who opted for no implants, I have had the DIEP flap. Essentially, they took a blob of fat and skin from my tummy and made two breast mounds and attached them to my chest. So I have NO BREAST TISSUE. It's all fat! Transplanted fat! So I wonder what mine will do. I have reserved a final reconstruction/revision surgery (I've had 5) for after I loose weight. I really don't want big boobs. I'd be fine with not much at all if I were very thin. I'll keep you abreast!
  23. Mine said it only covered one WLS, but I just had a revision from the band to the sleeve 3 weeks ago and they covered it. My surgeon listed it as complications due to band failure and I only had to pay my maximum out of pocket for my insurance.
  24. I had a revision as well, but my band was removed in December and my revision in April. Band removal was a breeze. RNY, not so much. I had HORRIBLE referred gas pain to my left shoulder and I also had a lot of belly pain. I don't do pain meds normally (I absolutely hate the way they make me feel) but I definitely did after bypass. It was a much harder surgery than any other I have had (band, hysterectomy, bladder sling, band removal...). I was also so extremely nauseous right after surgery they kept me an extra day. Well, that and I could not keep my oxygen level up. It sucked. BUT--10 weeks later I feel amazing. Actually, I started to feel a whole lot better about a week post-op. You will start to feel better about surgery very soon. I am so, so sorry about you losing your dad. I have no words to help with that... I am also sorry to hear that your hospital experience was less than stellar. You have the right to file a complaint if you want to. The hospital I worked for until just recently was really good about listening to patient complaints. It helps identify problem areas and improve on patient experience. It might make you feel better, too. Do you have any Gas-X strips? They might help with the pain your you are having in your rib cage. I know that my pain meds didn't touch that gas pain.
  25. Hello, I was heavier but otherwise healthy. Started at 272 and had a band in 2007 at 25 yrs old. I loved that band! Over 2 yrs I lost 100 pounds and would recommend it to anyone looking for help.It was amazing for 4 yrs, then everything slowly went into the crapper. I had multiple slips and it plain old wasn't working. Finally the tubing cracked so I went in for a revision in December. I was excited to have my lovely band back, but it was not to be. When I went for my first fill after the revision the port had flipped and was not accessible. On May 26 I hay band removed and opted for a gastric sleeve. I already feel much better, not to mention I'm happy to have the foreign (and broken) object removed. Good luck with whatever decision you choose. Just be aware many bands are being revised into different surgeries and they are not nearly as common as they were a few short years ago
