I felt just like you when I started. I also wanted a sleeve. My thought was that I wouldn't be rearranging my guts and I would have less issues with not getting enough nutrients. It seemed better in my mind. My dr also suggested RNY. He said their data showed more weight loss with RNY (though the sleeve was close behind) and they had seen less weight gain with RNY 2-5 years post op. After doing a lot of research of my own and still not coming to a clear decision I went ahead with the dr's recommendation. I'm only 10 days post op so I don't really have any advice but I hope you find what you need to make your decision.

    almost messed up

I havnt had a coke or anything carbonated since July 29th at 7pm...lol..it was my last coke before surgery...I used to LOVE drinking coke my whole family does....but aftr surgery I accepted I couldnt have it anymor...my doctor never really said absolutley no carbonation but I read alot of negative things about it with the band and the fact alot of doctors done allow it so I decided to remove it from my diet...I actually have been very surprised that as of today I havnt really missed it..I will look at a coke or a tall draft beer and think man I could drink that but if I take a sip of it, which I did a couple times...I dont want anymore..I dont know if I trained my brain or what...but when I do take a sip or two it feels weird going down and I can tell that it would not agree with me if I kept drinking it...anymore didnt mean to blabber on about it but long story short..Im trying not to do anything that could cause an issue with my band...maybe once Im a year out and lost more weight I might try it but since Im only 5 months out Im gonna play it safe...for now!

I think RNY is the more "standard" option for people with such a high starting BMI. RNY patients usually lose weight much more quickly and more weight overall than sleeve patients. I completely understand your concerns about the long-term consequences of having your plumbing rerouted with RNY. That was one of the main reasons I wanted sleeve as well. I guess the question to ask yourself is, are you willing to put in the extra work it's going to take to lose all the weight with the sleeve. Not saying that RNY is "easier" necessarily, but you will have to compensate for the slower loss by doing more work to exercise and stick to the nutrition plan. Another question might be whether you are concerned about losing ALL of your excess weight or would be content just losing a significant portion of it. Everyone's experience is different, but this calculator might give you a rough idea in the differences between RNY and sleeve in terms of what kind of weight loss you can expect and over what period of time: https://www.realize.com/do-i-qualify/potential-results/comparison Edit: I put in your current stats and it looks like with RNY you can expect to lose over 150 pounds in 18 months, whereas with the sleeve, you could expect just over 100 pounds. Again, though, these are just estimates.

  5. Hi everyone - another newbie here from Ireland. I'm considering a band and have found the threads on this site amazing so far...I've a couple of things I'm grappling with a the moment and I'd love some feedback .. I'm 44, 5 foot 5 and 181 pounds (bmi of 30.4 right now) and I've also got hypothyroidism. I've always been "big" but the thyroid situation has resulted in me piling on more than a few pounds over the last couple of years. I work out 4 days a week (twice with a trainer) and have a reasonably good diet (don't do too much pigging out but when I do it's carbs not chocolate)..I've been dieting since my twenties and I'm so good at it I just can't get enough...but I can't seem to keep the weight off.

I'm feeling guilty about even considering a band but when I think about the amount of work i'm doing right now to stand still it worries me that I'm only going to gain more without being able to keep up this level of activity..I also feel guilty because I'm not struggling with serious obesity and thinking that maybe this is a self-indulgence. So I wonder what others with a lower bmi think about banding..are you glad you did it? what motivated you to do it? and how have any of you with thyroid conditions found the band?

Forgive the thinking out loud - this is such a difficult issue to talk to people about.

Thanks

    Possible slip or too tight?

I was eating anything I wanted. And I mean anything. I can eat anything as long as I chew well. By too tight I mean since my last fill I've gained a good amount back. Could I have gained too much, making my band tighter then it should be?

    Psych eval?

I was extremely nervous about my visit. I saw the psychologist affiliated with the bariatric program at the hospital, even though I was given the option to see whatever psychologist I wanted-as long as he/she was certified. It was a lot of questions about previous weight, weight loss attempts, why I believed they failed, if I have a support system in place, and ALOT of questions about the surgery and diet/lifestyle changes afterwards. Basically, they are looking to make sure you have done your research and are mentally prepared for it all; do you understand what is going to happen/what the surgery entails. It went very well. I was VERY honest, and obviously answered correctly. I was "passed" by him, he gave his report to the surgeon, and I was submitted. Now just waiting to hear back from insurance. Good luck and be honest!

    weight lifting tip

Ditto. Those "bent bar" preacher's curls can get brutal! Also, personally I like to really stress my tricep work.....biceps are the "glory boys" of the arm, but it's the triceps that really give the impression of mass (IMO) Also, I think it's worthwhile to pick up one of those gizmos that works the forearms (a bar with a rope attached....you clip the rope around freeweights and lift those weights by rotating the bar. Sorry about the vague description, lol).
  9. My endocriologist encouraged me to get wls he is the one that monitors my hormone levels not my surgeon. Having PCOS we struggle a lot with weight and unbalanced hormones and when we are sleeved we only deal with unbalanced hormones because hormones are stored in our fat cells for me has helped having an Endocrinologist

    Three months

I am always amazed at how much younger everyone looks after losing weight! I look forward to looking 30 again. . .LOL!
  12. We all have a story, good, bad, long, troubled, blessed or any combination. Let me start with the good and blessed. I'm am 28, a mother of one beautiful 2yr old daughter and getting my sleeve surgery late April. Like I said, blessed. Okay so the bad...my weight has been an issue for my whole life. I have had some successes throughout the years but after my daughter was born and the subsequent year off work, 80lbs found their back to me. Omg I am excited to get this process started! Well the last part of the story...the troubled. I am having so much guilt. Guilt about getting this surgery and not losing weight like the contestants on "The Biggest Loser". Am I taking the easy way out? Not sure how to remove these feelings or are they healthy? Enjoying this support site and hoping over the few months, I will get 100% ready for this amazing transition from a tired, unhealthy stressed out person to a healthy, active, exuberant mother.

    General Questions

My lapband is scheduled 12/6/13. I'm aware of the pre-surgery diet. What do you consume post-surgery. Obviously eating as usual is not an option. My main concerns are what foods can be eaten that are good for you and pass through ok? I've been diagnosed as non diabetic hypoglycemia. Thus my weight issue. Sugar drops and I grab and eat. I do not eat fish, seafood, steak. How long to recover (my surgery is on a Friday, have the weekend and can take off Mon-Wednesday if needed)? I go to Zumba twice a week. How long until I can resume and exercise?
  14. I feel the same as you do. When I went for my one month post surgery appointment, the surgeon told me I had lost slightly more at that point than the norm. He felt that I would definitely hit my goal by one year. However, since then, my weight loss has really slowed down. I am almost 3 months out now, and I've lost 40 lbs. I went through a stall that lasted almost a month! But, I've been dribbling down a pound here and a pound there. I know I've eaten a few things I probably shouldn't have (like crackers), but not too much. Sometimes I feel like I'm not doing something right, but I don't know what it could be. I look for Protein in everything I put in my mouth, and I still use shakes/drinks. All the veterans say that you have to embrace the "stalls" and they will end. As long as I continue to lose, I will hang in there. I don't know what else to do. Are you exercising? Taking your supplements/vitamins? Get that 64 oz Water in a day (at least) and your protein. I think all of that is the most important.

    Hai :)

Hi, I'm Tiana I aaam 18 years old, and I'm about 3 weeks away from my lap band surgery date. I am 325, my BMI is 52 ( shocking I know!). My overall goal weight is 150. And I think it's very doable for me. I decided to have the lap band on my 18th birthday. When I decided I needed to do something about my weight was when I was unable to fit on a ride at Hersey Park, then found myself google fat friendly amusement parks. I then realized it wasn't the parks that needed to change, it was myself. I love amusement parks. I start my two week diet on Friday, yippy, I think that's all. K, bai!

    Long Term Expectations

I was banded January 2010 and haven't lost any weight in over a year and I am still 40 lbs from my goal. I am having a lot of eating issues, i.e. can't even keep liquids down sometimes. Had everything removed from my band 3 months ago and it didn't help. I go to a gastroenterologist tomorrow to find out if there is something else wrong because the surgeon said it isn't the band. I know that part of the problem is I can't get in enough protein but I sure do try...it just doesn't always stay down. Anyone else having this problem?

    Long Term Expectations

how is everyone doing now? I personally cannot eat sooo many foods! No ground meats, no beans, no celery, no roasted meats either! I am officially known in my family as the soup nazi! Lately, no yogurts either. I have not had a fill for 9 months. My previous fill of .6 cc was removed., then had another fill 4 months after removal. That was 9 months ago. I seem to be able to eat a lot of bad things tho. As popcorn, mashed potatoes and cookies! I am within 12 pounds of my goal weight but no weight loss for one year. If I try to eat meat it gets stuck. Always. I know for health reasons weight loss is good. But....was this a good decision? Will it always be like this? I feel bad now!!

    Pre-op Tomorrow

I'm sooo nervous. I have my preop at 11:30 with the surgeon then at 2:30 we have the preop class to attend. I am defiantely scared to death about not "passing" when it comes to not gaining any weight.. i doubt i have but my life will be thrown up side down if they cancel my surgery for ANY reason!! WISH ME LUCK!!!!!!!!!!
  20. You have to exercise and choose the right foods. The band is going to help you eat less, but that won't help (especially until you get to your sweet spot) unless you are choosing high protein, low carb, low sugar foods! I know this time period is hard b/c I'm in and I have pretty much stopped losing weight. I'm hoping a fill or two will help a LOT! (especially since everyone is asking me how much weight I've lost!)

Anyone heard of or taking "Actigall"?

Yeah, my drs give it to everyone. They do a ton of bands. I found a webpage on line that listed under "uses": "Actigall is also used to prevent gallstones in people on rapid-weight-loss diets." The lap band would qualify for that.
  22. I work in the substance use prevention field...many of us supported legalization in CO. Are re you in a state where it is legal? If so you may be able to make a case for legal off duty activity...perhaps they would allow you to continue to do random testing to show that it was old use. A series of tests will show the levels dropping. With drug testing there is no way to tell if a positive for THC is from recent use or several weeks ago. Since it is stored in the fat cells...weight loss can prompt a positive test well after you would expect (several weeks). Passing the the test will depend on the lab used, cut off levels, etc. if you drink lots of water you may get a dilute test but the THC would still show up....however it may be at a level closer to incidental exposure. Not sure I'm much help. Good luck.

    Wrapping your mind around it

That is a great point! I think about regaining the weight too, although I am pretty confident, with this amazing tool, that I will not. As a lifetime dieter, I struggle with normal eating behaviors. I have dieted since I was 9 years old, and I still have a tendency to feel self conscious if I am in public eating something not diet friendly.

    12 day stall? Help!

I had made a blog post very similar to this a while back, and someone posted the following link to help me understand what is going on: http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.html It really made a lot of sense to me, and helped me get through it. In my first month, I had a 5 day stall, and a 9 day stall, and still lost over 30 lbs. I'm now 6 weeks post-op and I've lost 45 lbs. It will come off, it has to. It just doesn't come off evenly or in a straight line. There will be periods where your body has to re-calibrate itself. The day after my 5 day stall, I lost 5 lbs overnight, and the day after the 9 day stall I lost 2 lbs overnight followed by a lb a day for 4 or 5 days after that. Just try to stay positive. I know I got a bit discouraged, I just went through major surgery and expected results overnight. But now that I look back 6 weeks later, it feels like 45 lbs DID come off overnight.
