Yawns, burps and nose blowing, OH MY!

I hiccup after I eat. Every time. No matter if it's one bite or thirty, when I do that, it's time to stoppp. Usually after about 10 minutes I can eat a little more if I didn't get far the first time. It's my "you're about to get stuck" signal. Though if my nose starts running? It's time for me to start scoping wherever I am for bathrooms. I definitely don't PB every time but that's my "you got stuck and went a bite too far" warning and sometimes it's not good... At least we've got some signals. I feel like it's having training wheels on your bikes. I've never been a regular weight and don't really know how to eat without stuffing myself to the point of being uncomfortable. Now I do.
  2. I am at goal now and I have to encourage all of you that it is fantastic to meet theses goals! I still marvel sometimes as I sit in church with my legs crossed or almost burst into tears when I slip into a size 10 anything! My deciding point was in the Spring of 2014 when I just could not handle walking around a park all day with my sons Boy Scout Troop...we were constantly on the move all day and it killed my legs, feet EVERYTHING! 7 months post surgery, I went Zip Lining with them and it was the most empowering moment in my life. I had avoided that trip the year before because of the weight limit, of course, and it was so awesome! Hang in there and you will be able to do all of those things you want to do.

    Coping with a loss

I'm so sorry for you loss. I lost my brother Which was the catalyst for me to lose the weight. My brother was always active and a pillar of the community. Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to these things it just happens. I've also lost both my parents in their early 60s. I'm in my 50a and to think that I only have 10 or 15 yrs left scares the crap out of me. Again my condolences for your loss.
  4. Yep - my doc consistently told me that the average weight loss is 60% EWL and that if I follow the plan, that's what I could expect. On another thread where people were discussing their goal weights - I said that this was mine and that I don't want to set myself up to feel like a failure. I'm pretty appreciative that my doc is conservative in his estimates. And some other WLS patients on these boards were kind of jerks about it. Saying that by setting of goal of average I was assuming I'd fail and still be obese and why was I even doing it. Even though I'm about 10 lbs from the 60% EWL at 4 months out, so likely to exceed that, I'm still thankful for my doc setting expectation. I'd rather under-promise and over-deliver. Because I know that if I did only achieve the average weight loss, and I'd expected/hoped for more, I would feel like a failure. And that would be very bad for my mental state. Plus, I had to judge whether or not to have surgery based on the most conservative outcomes - would I still be glad I went through it if I was still slightly obese? Yep - because I will still have lost a significant amount of weight that I couldn't have lost without this tool. And, overall, it will make me more healthy, even if I don't get to a "healthy" weight.

    What am I doing wrong!!?

It sounds like you are active, but sometimes, it's not enough. I know you mention that you're eating lean cuisines, but the packaged foods are loaded with sodium, so you really need to pay attention to your Water intake. Are you getting at least 64 ounces of water a day? For Protein, how much are you taking in? My doc tells me 70g, but I am actually around 80-90g per day and it does make a difference. I understand the need for 'cheat' days here and there, but they should be every now and again during this time and when you get closer to goal, perhaps you could do more often (this is what I did, which is why I am still 10 lbs from goal LOL). You have the tool to help and until you get a fill, try to find alternatives to one of the lean cuisines. Perhaps do some chicken and veggies for lunch or chicken salad with light mayo and wheat thins. I bring lean cuisines to work because it's just easier, but I make sure I drink a ton of water to balance out the sodium. 2 a day might be a little much, so you really have to get that water in. The good thing about the band is that it's always there to help you, but to be successful, it truly is a way of life. It's not an easy road, but it's definitely a journey--we can't just snap our fingers and BAM! we're all following everything to the "t". So, pace yourself. Don't be hard on yourself and try to Celebrate your successes with things other than alcohol or food (me, it's usually a pair of shoes or new jeans LOL). I do have some wine during the weekend, but try to keep it within reason. You'll get there. It's definitely not about deprivation, but moderation. Good luck to you!!!

    Nursing Home Abuse

I worked for a nursing home. I was the habilitation director, fancy title for "it was my job to come up with activities and exercises for people to do". So I wasn't really involved with the consumers directly, but I saw. And I heard. What can I say, I was 19 and it paid well. But I'll say this with complete honesty - after seeing not just the way people were treated, though that's certainly a part of it - but the things that were said about them away from earshot, and the "jokes" that people would play, the way that property was disrespected, and the way that these people were ridiculed, and on, and on... And beyond that, they degree to which the people hated the place, and hated their jobs, and hated the residents, and hated everything about the place... I don't care what the expense is to me, my parents will never - NEVER - be in a nursing home as long as I'm alive and able to care for them.

    Nursing Home Abuse

I agree, but there is to way to tell George Steinbrenner that he can not pay his shortstop $25,000,000 per year for 10 years. But we can tax that shortstop and Steinbrenner so that there is money for doing what both you and I want. I never said to go back to 90%, even though people were still becoming rich. A flat tax with no deductions (or loopholes as you call them) can never work because by the constitution corporations are considered people and a flat tax with no deductions would close down every business in the country. Plus it will never pass congress.

    Nursing Home Abuse

I couldn't agree with Joan More. I am an RN and early in my career I worked in a nursing home for a very short time- I was so appalled by the conditions that I went to the director of nursing only to be told that no one else was complaining so it must be my inexperience. Very reluctantly I quit, isay reluctantly because I really felt band for the residents but i sensed from my talk with the DON that if ever a problem arose with one of my patients for what ever reason they would blame my in experience. THat place was shut down 2 yrs later!! Most of the staff there were personal care attendants rather than EN or RN ( LPN's and RN's as you call them), personal care attendants are paid quite poorly so the good ones often do not stay around for long, and the training tends to be superfcial- with bad habits being passed on from worker to worker. Most facilities here have strict no lift policies to protect both staff and resident- only a lifting machine can be used -they are expensive though. I don't understand the liscensing procedure in the US so It is hard for me to comment but I know that LPN's and RNS have to answer to regulatory boards in the state they are regisitered. If you suspect elder abuse or unethical treatment- contact the regulatory board in your state, i know such complaints are taken seriously here and I would surprised if they are not in the US too. Do some research and find out what your states laws etc are like in relation to elder abuse, only with increased publicity of the problem will it ever stand a chance of being improved- as much as we may say that no family member, including ourselves are going to end up in a NH- none of us know that for sure- we may have our own health issues that stop us from caring from a relative or mean that we need supported care. I have cared for 2 parents who both died of cancer in there own home in the past 10 yrs even for someone in the profession caring for a frail family member is incredibly tough to do long term, both physically and mentally

    Personal Trainer Tips

I just finished up 20 sessions with a trainer (2× week for 10 weeks). Best thing I could have done. I was down about 50 lbs when I started with him...prior to that I was doing group classes or elliptical. The difference in my strength is remarkable; I am doing things I never in a million years thought I could; I just kind of overall feel pretty bad-ass. :-) oh, and I lost about 3% body fat during that time. I'm moving soon, but will either buy more sessions or start doing cross-fit. Have fun with it and push yourself...it's so worth it.

    Perspective On Portions

I feel like I eat "a lot" at times too. I hope it is that I am just adjusting to my new small portions since I still serve everything in a 1/2 cup size bowl or very small plate and I am 10 months out. I'd prefer that my calories be around 800-900 but they are usually 1000-1100 usually though

    weighing yourself

Lately it's been every day but I'm 10 days post op so it's a good motivator to see that I've lost 2 pounds in a day! But I'm going to start weighing weekly on Monday. I think I'm going to have to hide my scale though, it's too tempting!

  14. I'm located in Northern California. I have Kaiser and Kaiser insurance (mom works there) 3 of my doctors request this I was just told 3 weeks ago. SURGERY WILL BE DONE IN ... SAN FRANCISCO !!!! I have class on the 10th. After Class I have to call my doctor. He will contact San Francisco For my appointment (: We tried do all this 2 weeks. I guess lol. I will have to go to the class first . And sounds like just one class. ANY ONE UP HERE PLEASE TELL ME YOUR STORY (: how fast did you get your call (my doctor said within 10 days they have to call you)
  15. So, according to my surgeon, I am to have nothing but Clear liquids (Water, broth, black coffee or plain tea), sugar free popsicles and sugar free Gelatin cups. I am also suppose to drink to simple Protein drink (no fruit and no dairy). My choice of Protein Drink is Muscle Milk Light. When I add up the calories of what I take in for the day, I am left wondering if this is healthy. Muscle Milk Light: 140 cal X 2 = 280 calories Sugar Free Popsicles: 15 cal X 2 = 30 calories Sugar Free Gelatin Cups: 10 cal X 2 = 20 calories Total Calories = 330 Calories A Day????!! How can your body possibly heal with so few calories coming in? Doesn't your body start metabolizing muscle to compensate for the lack caloric intake? Or won't it just effectively go into starvation mode which is not beneficial at all? What am I doing wrong?

    Lap-Band Sucks

Well, I have the band, and seeing as how I've lost more than 120 pounds in less than 10 months, I'm not sure how much faster anyone would WANT to lose weight. So to my way of thinking, that argument isn't valid. My choice to have band surgery (beyond convenience and cost) was that it is reversible, and nothing inside of me got cut up or cut out. If the band develops problems, it can be removed. If sleeve or bypass surgeries go bad, they can't fully put you back together again. So it's a decision to make for the long term, not just for the moment. And I'm told that even if average sleeve or bypass patients tend to lose faster initially, after a couple of years it all sort of equals out with bandsters. And two years out from surgery, does it really matter HOW you lost weight? To me, at that point it's more a matter of being done with the excess weight, and living a healthy life. How you get to that point isn't as important than that you're there. The thing about the band surgery is that you have to work it. It is not a magic bullet, or an easy way out. Unlike other surgeries where the remaining parts force weight loss on you, with the band you need to eat right and exercise to lose weight properly. If you're lazy and want to eat anything you want and not participate in your weight loss, then the band is not the choice for you. It's your decision, and the quality of your life you're deciding on. Good luck! Dave

    Fluoro Fill Bandsters

I'll get my first fill on 05/17/10, at Fill Centers USA. This location does not have a flouro. I'm really nervous about going that route about him puncturing something. I'm assured he MD is skilled.

    REGRETS IN LIFE

I'm 10 months out and doing things I never imagined I would go! I went on an alpine slide this summer and i had to ride up on a ski lift! 70 pounds ago, I wouldn't have done it. I work out a the gym and the other day someone asked me a health question. Seriously? I talk to people I don't know. A year ago I was almost a shut-in. I rarely left the house and rarely spoke to people. I now strike up conversations with people at the grocery store and I find that people talk to me more now as well. I go to a hot yoga class every day - if you would have told me a year ago I was even going to attempt hot yoga, I would have laughed. A whole new world has opened up for me - this surgery and the subsequent weight loss is helping me become that person I was supposed to be. I have gained confidence, I have a better relationship with my husband and son, I have reacquainted myself with friends that I shut out over the years, I'm trying new things. For me, this surgery was not only a life-changer, it was a life saver!

  21. I'm a bit worried. This has been a crazy summer/fall and with that this is the last month of my pre-op diet. I HAVE NOT LOST ANY SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT! At first I lost a few pounds but then I kept staying the same. I had alot going on and I was not focussing on me. Now I may pay for it! I'm not sure, that is why I thought I would get on here to see if anyone else has had trouble with insurance paying if they did not loose weight during the pre-op period. I even gained 10 pounds last month!!!!!! (it was a bad month a close friend dies/my husband moved to Cali for a job we were all to move he's lost it and is back already) UGH! Anyway so I have been great this month and have lost five pounds but I wasn't sure if it's to little to late? I mean this surgery is going to be the tool I need to turn my life around! I need that little push to get me going. I hope I didn't screw this up for myself. Positive thoughts!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone else had issues or same problem? I haven't turned in my paper work yet so it could be ok just wanted to hear from others.
  22. This is really important for Pre-surgery peeps.... There are 8 videos, each one is less then 10 minutes and the content is awesome. It's everything we'll need to know to make this surgery work for us !!! Please take the time to watch these.

    New To Group

I just saw my doc this past Wednesday for my preop and asked the same question. He told me that though he is comfortable performing either procedure, he likes scientific data. The rny has been performed for 30 or 40 years with very high success rate and the sleeve has only been performed for the past 10 years so it doesn't have the longterm data to back it as rny. So I chose rny because I feel the same way. Something interesting though while at my appt...all of us in the group that day were asked if we wanted to participate in a blind random clinical research study for a single incision gastic bypass. Being random you wouldn't know which surgery you were getting until you woke up but my doc did the first single incision rny back in 2004 and is coming to the end of his clinical trial...thought that was interesting though I opted for the normal 5 incision...he said the single is a bit more difficult and a little more post op pain involved. Good luck with your decision! I wish you the best!

    What size are you now?

I was 22/24 my goal is to be a 9/10-I'm thinking it's not what today's standards are it's what you think is good for you! Health wise.
  25. As far as smelly gas, zinc is your friend. You can find supplements at any store. When it will go away is another question though. My mother had the RNY surgery over 10 years ago. To this day she still has horrible, horrible gas and when she does number two it is like death. I hope that your situation gets better, but she has noticed some patterns. Her gas and her 'movements' smell worse when she has dairy or certain other foods. You may try food logging and cut out certain things at the same time. This will let you know if it is a trigger food; they can easily be avoided.
