    September Surgery Buddies!!

Hello. I am new to this app. I am 45 yrs old. I have struggled with weight in the past 21 yrs ( after my first born ) and I have been yo-yo ing pretty high numbers each year. I had gastric sleeve surgery on the 28th of September in Lithuania. I had BMI 33.1 and self paid. Knee and joint pains where a drive to get this surgery and also that I found that my drive for training was non existent ( I used to be very active) So starting day 9 here. I have a ton of energy ( which I did not think I would have while eating nothing) but I am having issues getting my water and liquids down. It takes time. My belly makes “gurgling” sound every time I drink something. I have a itch and some tension in one of the incisions. I have 5 incisions total. The only forum for people like my in my country is a Facebook group but I am not on there so that’s why I am happy to find this app. I have been reading up in the past few days and lot of helpful stuff here. Thanks for that.

    Weight loss just stop

I am currently going through the same thing. I have been stuck for about 2 weeks now. It is very frustrating even though you know it is somewhat common. I am barely eating anything (less than 800 calories) drinking plenty (80-90 ounces) and exercising 45-60 minutes per day, walking. I am keeping protein around 80 or so per day and virtually no carbs. It really gets discouraging when you do these things and do not see the scale move. Yes, I know, don't weight yourself every day.........it is still an issue, even more so if you wait a week and still see no losses.

I think that's pretty normal. I'm just a few weeks out from surgery, but I am already nervous about this. Have you considered talking to a bariatric therapist? Also, agree with above posters about tracking your intake and keeping up with exercise. While exercise does not have much role in losing weight, it's been shown to be pretty effective at keeping weight off - provided your eating is in check.

    Weight loss just stop

Like @Hop_Scotch said, stalls are common and a normal part of any type of weight loss, not just with surgery. Sometimes you just have to keep doing what you are doing. Sometimes it can be helpful to track your intake for a few days to see if you're eating more than you think you are - like on MyFitnessPal. Make sure you're drinking enough, following all your surgery center's guidelines, etc. Plus, weight loss always slows down as you get further from your surgery date and closer to your goal weight. You can't expect to keep losing at the same rate as the first month. Don't Panic!

    September Surgery Buddies!!

I feel a pain on my right side near the largest incision whether I'm walking or not... I feel like the weight loss is slower than expected, but I know it depends a lot on your starting weight. I have lost 15 lbs in the 3 weeks since surgery, so I think that's fine. My surgery BMI was 40 I believe, so I think you won't see huge weight loss unless you had a really high BMI. Plus, if you lost a lot of weight prior to surgery, you won't see much weight loss right away. Also, this is not a race... many people who lose slowly can lose all the weight they want to, it just happens over time.

    Weight loss just stop

Just stop or slow down? Neither is unusual...there will be stalls (that can last weeks) and as the weeks/months progress and you body weight is reduced continued weight loss will slow down a bit. It would be useful though if you completed your profile (not that you have to but gives people context when responding) - date of surgery, type of surgery, surgery day weight, current weight, height etc.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Had VSG surgery 9/14 in Los Gatos, CA…did have 10-day preop diet of prescribed high protein shakes/soups/liquids plus hearty salad daily until clear liquids only day before procedure. Full three weeks out and trying to find my way with transition to blenderized foods and more than just liquids/purées, but definitely find some items don’t sit well and feel very heavy. Was walking too much and experiencing burning sensation on right side near largest incision so I backed off, but feeling like weight loss is slower than expected.

    Encouragement needed

Will you feel like you did before surgery? No. You won’t feel the same as you did because you’ve had pretty major surgery, changed your digestive system & you’re losing weight so every week you’ll experience new things you couldn’t do before. For a few weeks you’ll experience post surgical issues like rumbling, spasms, changes in your taste buds, nausea, discomfort, etc. but these pass as you heal & recover so you will feel better from that perspective. You may experience low energy, low blood pressure, foamies, dumping, hormonal fluctuations, etc. Some will pass after a couple of months, others once your weight stabilises. You’ll also discover how your new tummy works & identify how long to wait between eating & drinking, what doesn’t sit well, gives you the foamies, etc. I still gurgle but I usually know why like eating dairy often causes it for me. It’s an individual thing. During surgery, they pump you full of air & fluids so many people come out of hospital weighing more than they were the day they were admitted. You will lose at your own rate. There is not a single right amount to lose each week. There are average rates but some are naturally slow losers & some are fast losers. Losing 4lbs in your first week is pretty darn good. Remember, it’s not a competition. You’ve never experienced anything like this before so feeling unlike yourself & anxious about things is not uncommon. It will be ok. Give yourself time to heal & recover & to work out your new eating plan, your tummy’s likes & dislikes, etc.

    Post-op Anxiety

Congrats on your surgery. I’m pretty much a newbie when it comes to maintaining weight - almost 2 1/2 years since surgery - but choosing a way of eating that is sustainable has been key for me so far. That is a way of eating that allows me to be healthy, make nutritious food choices, maintain my weight & still be able to live my life the way I want to. If the food choices you make & the amount of exercise you have to do to maintain your weight is so restrictive your lifestyle is compromised you won’t be successful simply because you can’t keep doing it forever. I watch what I eat pretty carefully. I don’t track everyday but do random checks. I watch portion size, cook most of my own food & carefully read the nutrition panels of any food I do purchase. I’m realistic to know I can’t predict what the future will bring. I may make some changes to what I eat in time. Sometimes life throws a pile of crap at you & I may put on some weight but I hope I can manage to keep a weight that is still reasonable & healthy. But I don’t let what ifs & maybes compromise or undermine what I’m doing. Stay positive & embrace all the opportunities this surgery affords you.

People and their comments pre and post wls

People can be the worst. I don’t understand how some people think they have the right to openly make critical judgements about others to their face or in their hearing. I had people tell me I’d lost too much too & minister at my church took me aside & asked if I was ok. My uncle told my mother I looked like death. But I don’t get those comments anymore - or at least no one says it to me anymore 🙂. If I try to look at the comments from family & friends more positively, I think for some it is a shock. Even if they knew when you’d been slim in the past, they forget & they find it hard to see you as slim again. It’s almost if they have a form of body dysmorphia in how they see you. Strangers can go to hell!! The seemingly sunken eyes, gauntness does pass. For me it improved when I started eating more carbs & generally more calories when my weight stated to stabilise. Plus your remaining fat seems to resettle. That uncle who said I looked like death now says I look great. Hopefully, this will happen for you too & you won’t have to hear such rude & hurtful comments. Sorry you have have had some health problems. I you’re able to manage your IBS & you don’t experience more obstructions.

I still track everything I eat at 6.5 years out. I also exercise regularly - cardio 4x a week, weights 2x a week.
  13. After two months of my surgery, I notice that I'm not loosing too much weight. Any feedback?

Maybe it's from being fat my whole life, but I never think to comment on people's bodies. That is so strange to me. Some people have no tact. As far as family goes, they are probably used to seeing you bigger. In fact they are probably used to seeing bigger people in general. Most of the population is at least somewhat overweight. So when They see someone at a smaller weight they automatically think *sick*.

@highlymedicated I’m horrified that someone would even ask you that. What if you had, my mind is blown at what people say. Geez. Callus. I’m glad that you have not had a mastectomy and am sorry for anyone who has or is going through cancer treatment and get asked a question like that. On the other hand congrats on the weight loss! That is AWESOME!! I lost all my girls too when I lost my weight. They have since been brought to life here recently (8 mos ago or so). Mine were D before weight loss. Lost my weight and went down to an A. Mine looked crazy when I bent over. Nat Geo for sure. For me I wanted to bring mine back to life again. Nothing big but just in line w my body and the firmness now is a big plus I’ll say lol

I just don’t want to have lost all this weight and then regain it! Is there any tips, help anyone can give me in terms of how they successfully maintained their weight loss post-op?

    Hungry or Full?

My nutritionist told me to eat six small meals a day but I really can’t. I have a protein shake when I wake up and maybe get a third of it down, then I try to do an egg white scramble a few hours later, then for lunch I’ve been just sticking to soups, then I may try and finish the protein shake or have a sugar free pudding. Then I don’t eat until dinner. And that is totally dependent on how I’m feeling. Maybe I really am hungry and I’m scared to over eat. I honestly never had a food problem until this surgery. I could not lose weight after my 4th baby then I gained 30 pounds last year after a total hysterectomy and the extra 30 pounds was putting too much pressure on my fragile joints( I had a broken back and broke my ankle three times) after I left the military. So I felt like once I hit 227 it was time for a change. But I like to think I always was a practical eater, now I’m feeling obsessed with what I’m supposed to eat or how I’m supposed to feel. I just want to feel “normal”. But I just feel a lot discomfort now matter how much or little I eat. And the Crazy thing, I don’t know if the person posting about this has this too, my stomach growls at me after I eat. Never before. Idk what that is about.

Your post just broke my heart. I'm so sorry that people are being rude, and have been rude. There are people who really need to learn how to treat others respectfully. I don't understand how people can intentionally say things that would hurt someone. I can totally relate to strangers, family, aquaintances, or "friends" making rude or insensitive comments about your weight. It must be so disheartening to continue to hear comments after losing weight, too. Do not listen to them! I know it is hard. You feel good, don't let others ruin your success & happiness. Wishing you happiness & sending support 💜

“People suck. That’s why I’m a cat person.” You’re right, and hilarious! It does sound like your husband is on the good side and supportive of you. All of us have stories of weight micro and macro aggressions. It’s reflective of those that do it, not you. I try to surround myself with positive people and not turn that onto others because of race, identity, or religion, or gender because I know how bad it feels. Pets rule! You’re also awesome for posting instead of eating your feelings:)
  21. Hi Footballmom92! You can try to do searches in the forum to see if there are posts by others that started out at a similar weight. I found the article below about a young man that had weight loss surgery. He was close to 600 pounds. Have you started researching doctors yet? Perhaps you can see if your doctor or one you might go to has patients with similar starting weights so you can use the same nutritionist or be in same support group if they have one. Maybe there is a group on Facebook you can find so you can connect with others there. This forum is also a great support system, we all may have different amounts to lose, but can easily relate to, share advice with & give support to each other. https://www.treatedwell.com/i-would-not-be-here-today-kingsport-man-says-bariatric-surgery-saved-his-life/ Wishing you lots of success on your path to a healthier weight.😊

For years people would Comment on my weight...as a teen, when athletic, I was told I looked too masculine, or my grandmother would tell me (while underweight) that I needed to diet or I would end up overweight and over 300 lbs like my dad's mom....which, eventually, I got there. As an obese adult, strangers made rude comments in stores, restaurants, where ever. Their kids picked fun as they did too. And it only got worse the heavier I got and didn't matter if my kids were with me or if I was solo. Fast forward and now I get from strangers questions like "do you have cancer", "are you sick", and on 2 occasions the automatic store door wouldn't open and I was told if I ate more I wouldn't have that issue. Or one man said "let me show you where the cookies are, you need to eat those and not that rabbit food"... Recently I was hospitalized for 3 days incase of emergency surgery for bowel obstruction. My intestines had flipped, but flipped back on their own. I used to have chronic IBS-D now it's IBS-C. So after discharge I was prescribed an rx and 4 OTC meds to help me with keeping regular and avoiding bowel obstruction and surgery. While picking up the OTC meds, a rather large woman and her 18-22 y.o. daughter were on the same aisle...of course, observing my purchases and out loud the mother told the daughter "the reason why she's that thin is because she buys all that stuff to sh!t herself to death...she is anorexic ..don't let me ever catch you doing that. That woman is mentally ill." They walked away. I was left standing there in awe that , that even happened. My husband was like wtf? Well Saturday we had my daughter's 18th birthday. It was just us 4 and my dad. He hasn't seen me in like 2 months. And in front of my kids, he says "you do not look good. You look sick. You have taken this weight loss thing too far and you have got to stop. You're face and eyes are sunk in, your bones are sticking out and you need to gain about 50 pounds". I am 148 now. My HW 325. SW 311 3/9/20. I do not think nor does my bariatric surgeon feel that I've lost too much weight. Heck, his GW for me is 136. I am 5'6". I don't know what people are seeing but my point of this post, as long winded as it is, is that the negative comments just never seem to end. I thought for sure that I would lose weight, get healthy (point of surgery...healthy and save my life, not skinny) and feel great about myself. But it seems no matter what size you are, someone, somewhere always has something negative to say about one's appearance. Does it ever end? People suck. That's why I'm a cat person.
  23. I started at over 700 pounds and have managed to achieve a normal BMI. Actually, for a short time I was below a normal BMI thanks to my binge-running but when then binge-running ended my weight bounced up to high end normal BMI. After 18+ years I am still high normal BMI. Theoretically any given WLS patent can achieve a normal BMI. However, the average overall weight loss is about 60%. Good luck, Tek
  24. Who did you see? How long after your goal weight did you have surgery? I’m past goal (reached normal BMI at 6 months). Now down another 10 lbs. I feel like the excess skin is making me think I can’t just try to maintain.
