    Lap band conversion to ?

I had lap band placed in 2009, lost about 40 lbs the first 3 months and ended up pregnant. Gained all the weight back and then some. Tried fills after having my daughter, but nothing really worked. So, I'm now trying to convert to another wls and just so unsure which way to go. I have been researching, youtubing, and reading forums. My dr removed my lap band in May 2015. No issues with reflux, slippage, erosions, etc. I initially decided on the sleeve, but I've read so many issues such as slow or no weight loss due to being a conversion, sleeve revising to bypass, and sleeves starting to have more issues with leaks. I guess I need to stay offline. Bypass is considered the "gold standard", but I'm scared about the rerouting, taking vitamins for the rest of my life, and of course...leaks. So, I guess I need feedback on your experiences and why you chose to convert to bypass or sleeve. Also, anybody with slow weight loss or other issues with sleeve that had conversion done in 1 surgery versus 2 surgeries, I would like to hear your experiences as well.

    Slow Communication

I have been pleased with my communication with everyone so far. I am scheduled for revision surgery on Sept. 7 and have already had a long talk with Dr. A and all my emails have been promptly addressed by Henry and the anesthesiologist. Carmen (Nutritionist) and I have skyped and she has even sent me recipes already. So i'm a happy girl and looking forward to my date.

    Any Regrets?

"I regret.... not having it done earlier. I regret.... not choosing the bypass instead of the sleeve. I have the sleeve of steel, and can eat anything I ate before surgery without tossing my Cookies. I wish I could say that sugar makes me physically ill, but it doesn't. Cakes, candy, donuts, chocolate....anything fried... nothing bothers my tummy. Sooooo....I'm having to "work" more at making sure I eat a healthy diet and not too much of the bad stuff. Having the sleeve is an excellent tool, but you have to "use" the tool. It ain't gonna use itself! (except for that first year, of course). I have gained about 15 pounds back since I stopped losing last January (nearly 1 year post op). I'm now having to really watch what I eat. Not how much, I still have the restriction, but how often! I can graze without realizing how much food I'm eating over the course of a day! I was really hoping that I wouldn't have to go on a diet any more after surgery!" I am there with you. I had the sleeve (revision band to sleeve) in 2008 and lost about 110 pounds. Kept it off until last year - I had two major surgeries that limited my mobility (Achilles tendon release and repair and a total knee replacement) and gained 40 pounds back. Now out of sheer frustration, I am hoping to have the bypass. The sleeve allowed for sugars and carbs which I went back to when feeling sorry for myself during the surgeries. Sleeve did stretch, bad eating habits crept back, and addictive tendencies returned. Now, since working on my head in therapy, my surgical fate yet again lays in the hands of the insurance carrier. Part of why I didn't choose the bypass when I did was because I have multiple sclerosis and the surgeon was concerned of steroidal use as treatment for flare ups (not good for bypass patients) - I could have fought it, but I didn't want to totally give up food pleasures.....if I am being real with myself. Now, here I am, needing the ultimate "Antabuse" for food addiction and chancing any future needs for steroids. Just keep at it and remember YOU are STRONGER than you THINK you are! Keep trying in this life and never give up on striving for self acceptance and pride. Life is short! God bless.
  4. What you are saying makes sense....with the band I couldn't eat anything without vomiting. I was either too tight or no restriction, I never really had the "sweet spot". My health started deteriorating and that's when I decided to do the revision. I love the sleeve but it really does force you to be accountable. With the sleeve I can eat almost anything but my portions are small and I do get full fast. I think my body is almost in shock because I went 4.5 years with no food lol. I feel healthier with the sleeve. Honestly I need to stay off the scale and only weight myself once a month.
  5. Hi there. I'm doing this surgery soon. Was your starting weigh lower this time? Yes It was my weight was lower at the point of converting from the band to the sleeve. That probably is why you are taking longer to lose this time. I know that there is a thought out there that revision patients lose more slowly but as long as the surgery is done correctly I don't see why it should. Your BMI must have been below 40 and if you have lost 45 lbs that is pretty great - almost 8lbs a month! Why do you think that losing is harder with the sleeve? I worry that I learned really bad eating habits with my band - like ways to cope with not being able to eat healthy food so I wonder if that will happen to me.

    Band to bypass approved today

Congrats on the approval. I'm being revised from band to bypass on July 13th. I have been struggling with horrible GERD that causes me to sleep upright. Sometimes I wake up choking. After serious persuasion by my surgeon I was convinced to revise. It was a struggle because the scheduler at my surgeons office didn't want to submit for the approval because she was SURE Tricare would say no. After reporting her and starting the process of changing to a different surgeon she submitted and I was approved within two days! I didn't expect it to happen so fast so I'm scrambling to get things in place and people to cover my shifts (I work 12 hour night shifts in a hospital). Whatever it takes to not have to sleep sitting up! Best of luck to you and everyone else having revision surgery!

    Surgery

I'm having a revision from band to bypass July 13.
  9. I had my surgery done Tuesday. There was a lot of scar tissue and the operation took longer. I didn't have much pain or nausea. I feel fine now and looking forward to getting off of clear liquids. I was going to try to work Monday but was weak from the diet and I am going to work tomorrow after 8 days. I am so glad I had the revision surgery.
  10. Thank you for posting this. I have been talking with Linda from a different company about a revision with Dr. Garcia in Mexico. I was doing great and was ready to schedule and put my deposit until my bariatric doctor here started telling me I would die if I went to mexico for surgery and that if I have any complications after surgery no doctor in the us would save me. I am very nervous now and mixed with anxiety. I am hoping to talk to someone on the phone who has gone through this as on here you can never tell if they are really patients or someone that works for the doctors.

    Lap-Band Lawsuit

Hello, I'm Kim Harris and I've had the band since early 2010. Althouh I loat weight, I've had nothing but problems from the get-go. A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with a Sjogrens, an autoimmune disease similar to lupus, which causes joint pain and fatigue 24/7. I just received word today from my surgeon that insurance has approved the removal of my band. I am praying that removing the band improve my health with respect to my autoimmune condition. I considered having a revision to a gastrectomy but metal staples would be yet another foreign object permanently placed in my body for my body to reject and continue the autoimmune response. When I saw your poat about how you had just had your band removed and you feel so much better (and weight loss on top of it) I had to ask what you were feeling and problems you were having that prompted the removal of your band? And did you have any revision surgery? I'm wanting to know if there are others who developed autoimmune conditions after lapband placement, and if they chose to have the band removed, did it improve their autoimmune symptoms/conditions? Thank you for sharing your post-op improvement; it gives me hope that I haven't had for many months now. I wish you continued improvement in your health. I am interested in knowing what problems yiu experienced with the band and what has improved thus far. I'm new to this site, so if you have posted this info elsewhere, I would appreciate a link. And by the way, my daughter in law works for an attorney and we were juat discussing this very topic yesterday of lap band compllications and how they are so hard to prove for a jury to actually have enough concrete information to find in favor of a patient. Her attorneys won't even look at medical cases unless there has been loss of limb or life. So, don't be too optimistic on finding an attorney for lap band complications (I have no idea what your situation is; you may have something an attorney would consider.) Kim

Thinking about getting my band removed

@@B_heezy12 I'm sorry to hear about all the troubles you have experienced, but I wouldn't take anything off the table when thinking about a revision. The best advice is to find a surgeon that you trust and have a nice long conversation with them about what your experiencing, and how you feel. Ask them their advice, don't let them make you feel like you HAVE to revise to another surgery but get the information so you can make an informed decision for yourself. Either way if you decide to take the band out, keep the band, revise or no the best person to talk to is a surgeon you are totally comfortable with. See if you can make an appointment not just for an exam or a fill but a comprehensive consultation and evaluation appointment. Make a list of all the side affects that you have experienced, add in the pro's and con's about being banded and keeping the band or losing it. How you feel about revision, and any questions you might want to ask about anything and bring that all with you to the appointment. I wish you all the best!!! Let us know how your doing!!

    How much can you eat?

I'm a revision too and I can eat A LOT ! I can eat a 6" flat bread from subway and chips no problem, today I had an entire Cesar salad kit for lunch, I really don't notice that I can eat any less that I could with my sleeve which was already stretched out. It's crazy because Iv seen my xrays and I really don't even have a stomach at all, I have a very small pouch that empties into my intestines. Sometimes if I don't chew well I do get a terrible stuck feelings that brings back my PTSD from my lapband ! My bypass was almost 9' though so I lose weight because everything I eat goes right through me more less.

    Sleeve vs gastric bypass

I think looking at statistics is very important, but in the end your personal contribution to the effort makes a big difference in results. I think it is risky to get the sleeve if you already suffer from reflux. That is the #1 serious long term complication from the sleeve. I spent a long time thinking about whether I could live with it since something like 20-30% of people have it long term - sometimes it doesn't even show up until years down the road. If you don't have any "contradictions" to either surgery, i think really researching lifestyle impacts etc is important. They are both "good" alternatives but have pros and cons. I am 3.5 years post band to sleeve revision and very happy with my choice.

Thinking about getting my band removed

I think your concern is legitimate. I have never read of anyone who had their band removed and was able to keep their weight off. Even unfills seem to provoke weight gain, as I have experienced. Have you considered a revision surgery? There are many on this forum that have revised from the band to a sleeve or bypass, with excellent results and no issues.
  16. Hi out there, I had my band to sleeve revision on May 29th. I'm doing pretty good so far. I'm on pureed foods, trying hard to get my liquids in, and feeling full. I'm very happy with my decision to go ahead and do the revision. My main concern is that I still have a lump where my port was "dug out" and there's another lump near the incision where my stomach was taken out. You can't see the lumps, but feel them. I think I still look kindov pregnant or something. Is that normal? I'm walking and don't seem to be having gas issues. Sometimes I'll get a sharp pain in those areas (of the lumps) when I move a certain way or roll onto my side when sleeping. Is this normal? I have a clinic-1 month follow up- appt. on Friday and I'll ask. I don't have a fever or any drainage from the incisions...everything looks healed. It just bothers me that these lumps are there. Do you think they could be hematomas from surgery and if so...will they go away or does the surgeon have to drain them? Ugh. Thanks for any input.
  17. I'm so sorry your hospital experience was not what you were expecting. I had a band to bypass revision on the 19th and I feel like we're going through a lot of the same stuff. Surgery took longer than normal because my band had become "part of me" and my doc had to really work to get the port out. That is where I have my drain. I'm most sore on my left side (that's where I was told the doc does most of his work. Other than that pain, the gas pain has been the worst. My back is killing me and it's so hard to get comfortable. I desperately want to lay on my side! I am finding that every day I am feeling better though. All this pain is temporary and we'll get through it!

    Lapband or Sleeve

I had a hiatal hernia repair at the same time I had my band done. 3 years later I just revised to the sleeve and didn't have any problems with having had the previous hernia surgery. Good luck and I hope you get good news.

    Lapband or Sleeve

Thats my fear with the lap band, having to revise to a sleeve. But I guess at this point I will take whatever he can do for me. He won't know how my scar tissue is, until he goes in. I'm afraid to wake up and be told that I couldn't get anything done.
  20. For my band to sleeve revision the insurance company only made me go through the psychiatric visit again. Plus the normal pre-op EKG and blood work that pretty much everyone has to have for any kind of surgery. The surgeon only made me to do the psychiatric appointment too.
  21. When I looked into out of pocket they did not require anything, but the surgeon I ended up going to all patients had to do everything whether insurance or paying. But since your a revision I wouldn't think you would have to go thru it all again. Do you have a surgeon yet?
  22. If I have a band-to-sleeve revision that I pay for out-of-pocket, would I have to go through all the same pre-op requirements I had for the band? Or do those not apply if you aren't using insurance? (For banding, I had to see a psychiatrist, take behavioral classes, get nutritional counseling, submit letters to my medical group, etc. which took about 3-4 months). I have my appointment in 2 weeks, but I would love to look forward to a quick turnaround in the whole process ????
  23. I had a band for 11 years. I lost 100 lbs with the band and kept it off until my band failed. I gained back 87 lbs. I had revision surgery on May 28. The recovery was much easier than with the band. After I came home I didn't take any pain meds. I have lost 18 lbs. the sleeve is a lot different than the band. No stuck food. No vomiting or sliming. I am so glad I had the sleeve. I know it may take me time but as long as I follow my plan I know I will get back to my goal. I say go for it. I don't think you will regret it.
  24. Maybe I should keep my mouth shut. I am not a patient, but the very supportive wife. My husband is starting the process of a band to sleeve revision and we are hoping for a late September surgery date. I have been to the appointment with him, and have read not just the binder from the surgeon, but everything I can find online. Both DH and I know that this is a tool to help him lose weight and get healthy. He also knows that in order to be successful, he needs to follow, to the letter, the program that the surgeon and nutritionist lay out. I read all the time here, and on other forums, of people who are not being successful. Most of the time, it comes out that they are eating solids too soon or eating too many carbs. I am the first to admit that I don't know what it's like to be a food addict. But, having been with one for almost 25 years, I know the struggles all too well. Ultimately, it is up to him to succeed with this gift he is being given. And while I cannot watch him 24/7, he knows that following the plan is the only way to succeed. liquids for 2 weeks. Mashies for 2 then the slow introduction of solids. Letting the new stomach heal and more importantly, learning how to eat to live, not live to eat. Sorry if I offended anyone, and like I said, I don't know what it's like to live in your shoes. But, I will walk over flaming broken glass to help my husband succeed.
