    Back to school?

You think your lunch is early... oy! Mine is at 10:50 this year! How crazy is that?

    What keeps everyone more satisfied?

Especilkay at the end of my night shift, around 5 am, I do 1/2cup vanilla bean geek yogurt with 1/2 shop of vanilla protein shake powder. Turns the 10 ish gm protein breakfast into a 23g breakfast. To stir it up, I add low fat granola, raisins, and slivered almonds (all totaling about 2Tbs). Pretty yummy!!! This lasts me at least until i wake up later I'm the day and often I'm not hungry when I wake up.

    No longer obese!

Congrats! You'll reach your original goal before you know it! 😊 I, myself, have low standards and just want to be in the overweight category as I've been obese since I was in elementary school. Right now I'm the smallest I've been in 19 YEARS as I was 14 the last time I was 235! It honestly blows my mind and the fact that I'm even in a smaller size than I was when I was 14 is even odder to me. (I was a size 20 in pants and a 2x in tops when I was this weight at 14, but now I'm an 18 in pants and an xL in tops). There's also the fact that I hadn't been under 300 pounds since I was 17! I'm grateful every day that I made the decision to have this surgery... I put it off for far too long!

    scales

I have that same scale and it is very easy to use...first step is to turn it on and then check that it is reading ounces instead of kilograms (sounds like it is)...if you need to switch it, hit the "unit" button once to switch measuring mode. If you are measuring food outside of a container, put it directly on the scale and read the number...the number on the left side of the decimal is the "full" ounces, and the number on the right side of the decimal is the "portion" of the ounce...so 2.6 would be 2 ounces with 6/10 of another ounce. If you are measuring multiple items to get to a total, just add together the totals you get (so, 1.1 oz + 2.6 oz + .4 oz would = 4.1 oz) Then, if you have a container that you don't want to be included in the total you see on the scale, then you place the empty container on the scale BEFORE you turn it on, then hit the "tare" button on the right...wait a second and it will show a 0 number on the scale and then you can add in food to the container and it will only count the "net" weight of the food (so, if you placed 3 oz of food into a container that weighs 6 oz, the scale will only show the 3 oz food portion)

    Loose skin

If you do a search on this topic you will find hundreds of posts on this topic. I know as a newbie loose skin and hair loss were two of the biggies that concerned me. I recently went back and posted a picture of myself 11 months out from surgery exposing all of my goods on an thread titled - "My top 10 ways to prevent loose skin." I'm convinced genetics and how long you spent over weight have the most influence on whether or not you will have excess skin. I also was a sloooow loser. I once read it takes skin 2-3 months to adjust every time you lose. There were times my thighs look horrific and a few months later they snapped back into place. If you lose too much too quickly, your skin may newer fully snap back. My loose skin is limited to my lower stomach. I have had two very large babies and my lower abdomen had Freddy Kruger stretch marks on it. There is no way that's going back to normal without a tummy tuck! There's likely some tell-take signs you will have loose skin in areas. For example, if you have fat pockets that start right above your elbows, you will probably have bat wings. I carried most of my excess weight in my mid-section, so it doesn't surprise me this is where I have excess skin. It doesn't look bad standing up, but when I bend over, I look like I would whelp a litter of puppies! What I can tell you is part of this journey is accepting our new bodies. I decided to post a pic of myself exposed because I noticed most people are wearing pants and long shirts in their after photos on this site. It always made me wonder what was lurking underneath. Many of us will be left with more excess skin than what we are comfortable with. Some can afford plastics. Many cant. Regardless, I wouldn't trade the new active lifestyle I live for anything. For reference, I am a woman in my mid-40's. 5'7" and was 241 at my heaviest. I was 226 the day of surgery. I was 152 when I took this picture a few days ago. I am currently 7 pounds away from my stretch goal of 145. I haven't exercised with much consistently during the 11 months post surgery. I took this photo as my "before" picture and hope to see how tone I can get after I start doing squats, sit-ups, and lifting weights! I have to say I'm a tad more motivated now that I can actually SEE my muscles! Who would have thunk I had abdominal muscles? Albeit pretty separated post child-bearing, I'm sure!
  7. So my nutritionist requires you lose 10% of your body weight (14 pounds) before surgery. I started a diet the day after seeing her which will be exactly 4 weeks this Saturday. In that time I've dropped 20 pounds...this happens everytime I diet. I drop weight quick then it stalls and i gain...will I be disqualified for losing too much weight???

10 weeks and can barely eat

I'd check in with your Dr. At 10 weeks out life should be getting easier for you not more difficult. How much are you eating a day? Protein and calorie wise? I've not had any nausea and can eat my serving size of protein. I shoot for 90g of protein and under 900 cals a day and have no problem hitting those numbers. Hope they figure it out for you.
  9. I'm 10 weeks out and am finding myself able to eat less and less. Still struggling with nausea too. Feeling down.

Lap Band Post Op Day 8

Babylvrrn, you're just a few days ahead of me in this experience and I feel exactly how you do with this liquid diet. It's driving me bonkers too. I would pay big money just to eat some cottage cheese right now. It's gotten to the point that no matter what I drink, it all tastes the same. My doctor said I could start pureed food at about 10 days, and I'm only on day 3. He won't let me eat solid food until week 4, which seems like an eternity. I guess we just have to tough it out.

Lap Band Post Op Day 8

Yes I'm now 10 days out and only fighting "head hunger". I now truly understand what that means. I have not really had any physical hunger yet. I really hope it stays that way!! Today is my first post op. I'm down 13 pounds.

Lapper we are here for u cheering every .01 lb of the way
  13. My husband works out of state 48 of the 52 weeks a year. We normally try and plan things like this. But this all happened so fast, that he'd already had his schedule / flights/ ...... booked 3 weeks out. I told him to go on and go b/c I had a girlfriend that was taking the day off to come be with me. Well.......I just found out that she will be leaving shortly before noon to go take her son to Sophmore orientation. They won't even take me back until 10:30 ish.... So I won't even be out of surgery before she leaves!!! this was one of the main reasons for her being there, so someone would be with me during surgery and then they could call my hubby with the report afterwards. I am so bummed. Our oldest daughter lives an hour away and has our 16 mo GS, so a hosptial for hours is no place for her/him to be. Our youngest daughter is 23 & still lives at home b/c she has multiple health probelms. She isn't even staying at home alone while I am in the hosptial and until hubby get home Friday afternoon, she is going over to a friends house. I am at a loss as to what to do. Suggestions?

    Tears of Frustration....

He's a damn a*****e. By law, he's supposed to give you copies of all of your records. Glad you were able to get the copies. LMAO - you must be 10 minutes away from PA or NY. Keep me posted. I'm sure you'll have smooth sailing from here. I actually go in to see my PCP today for my 5th visit and hopefully my EKG. I'll message you later tonight and let you know how it goes.
  15. Jill, My BF has surgery Jan of 2010. Her's started to slow down around the year mark then again at about 18 months. She wasn't a rapid loser about 20 the first month then about 10 then 5 or so per month. She lost about 125 pounds total and went from a 22/24 to a size 8. She is still losing now but very slowly, a pound or two a month. You should be fine for a while!!!

When did your weight loss slow down?

Thank you!! My surgery was 10-12.

    All consuming

Yes it happened to me too. All thoughts led to my upcoming surgery. Once I had the surgery and got back to work (I stayed home for only 10 days!) the obsession seemed to subside. Now I actually sometimes forget I had the surgery! Unless of course I eat too fast or don't chew enough...then I get reminded real quick!

The best thing about my band is_______

Out of food jail, not on a diet, able to make good choices and override brain chatter (chatter that isn't even that present anymore). Oh, and I love my size 10 jeans.
  19. Hi everyone, I'm having trouble deciding who to listen to - my surgeon or my nutritionist. HW 243 SW (day of surgery after pre op diet) 234. 2 month post op I was 214.5. I'll also mention that I had a lap band for 10 years and had it removed almost 3 years ago- gained back anything I had lost with it. When I went to my 2 month post op appointment, my surgeon was unimpressed by my weight loss. So was I. He asked what I was eating and I told him I was getting about 700 calories a day but getting in all of my Protein. He said I was eating WAY too much and this is why I wasn't losing. He said only eat when hungry, forget about protein, stop Protein shakes, and live off my fat. I pointed out that is very different guidance than I had received from the nutritionist that I had seen right there in that very office. He said something like "yeah, yeah, I know. She gets all focused on that and it is really not necessary - this is an ongoing conversation I am having with her". Because I was on a stall at the time, I decided to go with his advice and see what happens. I lost about 10 pounds the following month. Also during this month I upped my exercise, getting 10,000 steps most days with a combination of walking and jogging (using couch to 5k, up to week 4). But now I am on a stall again, and wondering what I should do nutrition wise. I am getting around 700 calories still most days but really never over 40ish grams of protein. It is hard to figure out what to do when your 2 resources are telling you different things. I haven't seen anyone else on the boards who are being told to forget about protein. What should I do? Forget my surgeon's advice and go with the nutritionist even though my weight loss was slow when following that plan? Follow my surgeon's advice even though it is not consistent with any of my research or reading others' experience? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Just Getting Back

I just was banded 6/19 but know exactly where you are coming from, food has always been my friend when I'm sad or upset or bored. I found that when I want to reach for a snack I do something else like go for a short walk or clean something or do a hobby (I like to read and paint) just get your mind off of food, get motivated. I know it's easy to say but I am trying to do the same thing. So I'm right here with you sister. Keeping a food journal helps when you see what you are eating in writing you have a better grip on where you are going wrong and can see where to correct it. I get upset when I see too much food on my journal because I know I'm just hurting myself. And, above all do not drink when you eat. You can over eat that way and that is not what you got banded to do. Keep sugar free and healthy food around you so you won't be able to make excuses and eat poorly. Stay positive, take a look in the mirror and tell yourself "I'm important and I am going to lose this weight and not let anything stop me, I love myself as a person and want to get healthy." Weigh yourself once a week and keep a record of it so you can see how you are doing. Be proud of yourself you already made a big step by getting banded now do what it takes to finish the deal. My prayers are with you.....

6 months post sleeve and need help!

I'm right there with ya. I go through the same thing about once a month or 6 weeks. I'll just bounce up and down 1 or 2 lbs for about 10 days before the weight starts creeping down again. I just stick with my exercise and diet. It worked before the stall and if I stick with it, it will work again.
  22. I had a really bad vomiting attack earlier this month and was freaked out thinking my band could have slipped. They think the attack was my gallbladder, but I basically vomited every 15-25 minutes for five hours. We're talking at least 8-10 times. I just had a fluro done and everything was fine. I think that the stitch they do to hold it in place really helps with that.
  23. Hi All! I was banded by Dr. Spiegel 19 months ago and I LOVE my band! I have lost 62 pounds as of yesterday. I am not the most active person in the world, but I did go to the YMCA last summer and start water aerobics. It was great. Then I had to stop so I could help my pregnant DIL with my little 13 mo. old grandson. I have lost steadily since I started running after him! What a way to lose! Yes, we older bandsters lose more slowly, but my skin looks great. I just had an adjustment to my band after several months and the Nurse Practitioner told me that my band was really loose because I had lost so much weight!!!!!Now I have good restriction again. It is like I was first banded. I have been looking for great banded recipes on this website. I had kind of let things go before, but now I am back on the horse!!! Ladies, we are SO much better off with the band! Good luck and Happy New Year and New You to all of you! Calanne:whoo::clap2:

    Fifty + & gonna-be-banded

Photo Egor:photo: and I just turned 51. I am asthmatic, arthritic, bi-polar, pre-diabetic, and FAT (100lb. more than when we met 34 years ago).:drama: His BMI is 45, he has to sleep with a machine for apnea, and take two insulin shots a day, in addition to medicine for clinical depression. We are both being treated for high blood pressure and cholesterol problems. We first went to AIGB-Dallas November 14th, and are working through all of the time and tests Aetna requires before banding  (hopefully March for me and April for him:pray2:). We have become more aware of the lifestyle changes we have to make, including walking, portion control, chewing thoroughly, and thinking about when, what, :tea: and how much we drink. So far, we have lost about 10 pounds each :scales:, in spite of :pray2:Thanksgiving , FOUR family birthdays,:cake:  :happybday: and Christmas! :present: :)Banding seems to be a great tool for people like us, who want:pray2: :pray:to lose the weight that is making our other health problems worse. :gluck:
  25. I GOT MY APPROVAL TODAY! I'm SO EXCITED!!! Surgery is on Tuesday August 11th.. I am on day 6 of my pre-op diet 10 lbs down with no cheating!! This day has just been amazing and its only noon!
