    December Surgery Buddies

I am nearing the end of the pre op diet and have found it a incredibly hard 3 weeks. It has broken my habit foods and comfort eating. I am not enjoying my diet at all. Its just food for my body. I bought jigsaws and books. Never touched them. I feel like I have spent so much time preparing vegetables, its all I have done. Its just something to get through, we have to or the surgery is off. Good luck
  2. I am beyond excited. I have received approval from Tricare and my surgery date is January 18,2021. I am so ready to start living. I am planning on taking 3 weeks off work. I work in the hospital and do not want to go back until I am at least on soft. I do a lot of moving, pushing, pulling, and running to operate on liquids. I am anticipating on going on the liquid pre-op diet January 3rd. So BP friends…give some tips to get me through the additional waiting? P.S. I am hoping that some additional days open sooner and I can be moved up.

    Pre-Op almost done!

I actually only lost 2.1kgs in the two weeks before surgery. So relax you’ll likely be ok especially as you were only required to do 2 weeks. I did lose a total of 5.2kgs in the 6 weeks between getting the referral from my GP & my surgery. I started to make changes straight away to start preparing for the pre surgical shake diet I’d heard about & then I only had to follow keto for the two weeks. Not complaining though 😆.

    Hair Loss

We all react differently but for most it does tend to start around month 3. Just a thought but did you have a long pre surgical diet (months not weeks)? If you did maybe your protein levels have been low for a while already unless you were vigilant about your intake. If you also lost a considerable amount of weight during the pre surgical diet your body might have gone into shock earlier too & the surgery was the last straw so to speak. These things are what stimulate & accelerate our natural hair loss cycle & suddenly we’re losing handfuls of hair. Give your surgeon a call & see what they suggest why it’s happening earlier.

    November 2021 surgeries

Had gastric sleeve on Nov 1st. Had to stay a week in the hospital because a night nurse gave me Tylenol pills the first night and my stomach decided to swell. I was NPO (nothing by mouth? For 5 days. Came home on the 7th and the 12th developed lactose intolerance to all my protein shakes and yogurts everything I had for protein. It’s been a struggle getting enough protein, today I’ve been so bloated and burping constantly the Dr now thinks it could be my gallbladder or my small intestine is not digesting well. I’m a little frustrated but trying my best.

    December Surgery Buddies

Scheduled for the sleeve on Dec 22 was put in liquid diet today by Drs MA but the paperwork she sent me says 28 days before surgery which is way out from today. Also I’m to loose 5 pounds a week or 20 pounds loss by surgery date. I’m 216 and 5’7” that seems to me like a lot of weigh to loose in that time but I’m gonna try!

    Pre-Op almost done!

A kilogram and a half per week is a lot of loss. I would have maybe lost about that much myself in my pre-op - maybe even a little less. You also weigh less than I did at my surgery weight. Relax. You'll be fine. If you stuck to your diet, your liver will have shrunk. Best advice pre AND post-op is don't obsess over the scales and don't compare your weight loss rate to others. We're all different. Hospital packing - comfy clothes to leave hospital in, toothbrush and paste, face and hands moisturisers (hospital air just sucks moisture out), phone charger. I took my Kobo e-reader but couldn't concentrate with all the painkillers etc.
  8. Hi everyone! Monday is my surgery date and the last two weeks almost ive been super strict on my pre-op diet but ive only lost 3.3kg Start weight was 103.6kg and im 100.3kg this morning. Ive heard of people losing so much more in their pre-op and this small loss really makes me anxious that my liver hasnt shrunk enough😱 i have been told that my bipolar medication can make the weight loss slower though but omg this still makes me anxious! Only a few weeks ago my GP said i have moderate fatty liver disease(after ultrasound) and the surgeon decided a 2 week pre-op will be fine. But im still so anxious that my liver will be too large and they will need to cancel the surgery. What was your loss in pre-op? Guess i just need to feel some sort of reassurance Also, packing for hospital! Anything youd recommend as essential to take?
  9. I had my RYN on Nov 1st, recovered well, and just washed my hair and noticed bunch of hair came out, and i was in disbelief, brushed my hair and a string of hair came out! I cannot believe that i am in hair loss? At 18 days? I am supposed to be on the puree stage, but i like only light and fit greek yogurts by Dannon and chicken broth with carrots. But i do struggle to get in the 80g of protein and water because of the chest pain when drinking/eating as jt passes down. I have to go very slow. Is this "normal" to have hair loss before 3 weeks? Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Finally post op

Hi, Iam day 10 post op. First week was rough. Last night was first night I was able to stay all night in my bed. Everyday is little better.
  11. A 3rd vote for ketosis. Drinking extra water can help, but that's not so easy when you're one week post-op.

Am I done losing after 5 months?

Have you guys tried to shake things up during your stall? Not your diet/calories but other things like doing different exercises (if you walk 3x a week start biking or doing stairs), or trying intermittent fasting. If it were me I would focus on protein goals and start doing body weight (strength) exercises

    Post op day 2

I had a chat with my dietitian about hair loss after my 1 week post op. She said that if your protein intake is low, regardless if you are taking biotin, it will not work. I’m finishing the liquid stage and I am relying to protein shakes and paleo/keto broths for my protein intake. Idk how will I force myself to eat puréed meat. Maybe holding my nose while chewing it. Eekkkk.

Im not a slow eater either and at 16 weeks surgery hasnt changed that but i try. I can drink a reasonable amount of water now and i rarely take my vitamins i think as long as i am are eating a varied diet its ok.all my bloods have come back good so far although I am experiencing hair loss at the moment so i am trying not to stress about that but thats normal so see how it goes.

I hate that I had this surgery

I had my surgery nearly three years ago and have turned into a horrible person. My language is awful and I'm a alcoholic
  16. I am a week post op. Since surgery I have had such a gross taste in my mouth. I thought it was taking orally dissolvable medication. Then I tight it was the lack of food variety? I have been brushing my teeth, flossing, using a tongue scraper (my tongue has been very coated). It isn't oral thrush, I've checked. My breath is rank. Is this normal? Will it improve? Please tell me it will as my food intake returns to normal 🙏

    November 2021 surgeries

Had bypass on 10 November. Pain days have been off and on since then. One more week until puree stage. Can't wait. Also can't wait to start getting some of the awesome stuff I have seen here.

    Post op day 2

2 week post op appointment My last weight prior surgery was 168. That was my weight at the last appointment prior to surgery which was a week before, so it may have been a little more. I say more because I did not do a pre- op diet…at all. I ate all the things up until the day before surgery. I did a liquid diet for 24 hours the day before surgery. Starting weight: 168 pounds height: 5 foot (imma meatball) Self pay, BMI 33.2 2 week post op: 152.8 pounds down: 15 pounds When I told my surgeon that I haven’t met (or even have come close to) meeting protein goals, and I haven’t drank a single protein shake. He said “don’t worry about the protein, I don’t really want you drinking protein shakes”. UMMM what?!? I mean, weight lifted because I’m not doing it anyways. He was pleased that I’m staying hydrated with just water, and that I am eating 2oz at a time. I told him I having cravings, and he said have one bite and be done with it. He also told me to start eating fruit. Music to my ears. I feel a lot less stressed about it all. He doesn’t seem super strict, which I don’t know if it’s case by case. Being that i started at a low obese BMI, maybe that has something to Do with it. He also said my hunger is likely to decrease over the next few weeks. Enough appointment talk. Back to what’s going on with me post op day 15. I’ve been able to take a mouthful of water and swallow 3-4 times in a row. Still pretty small sips, but I’m no longer using a med cup (haven’t for while) or waiting minutes between. I am having a hard time slowing down with my meals too. I’m definitely not taking 20 minutes. I find my found myself eating 3 small bites rather quickly, then taking it slower after that. My vitamins have become a 10 minute ordeal of me almost throwing up. Like my mouth will water like I’m about to puke. I just try really hard not to. My energy level is pretty good. Considering no caffeine and little protein. For breakfast I had 1.5oz canned chicken and 0.5 oz banana) For lunch I had canned Annie’s vegan chili (1oz) and 1oz smashed potatoes, pinch of shredded cheese. It was yum! feeling good!
  19. Oh that wasn’t my first drinking with a post-wls bod. im 3 years out now and drink quite regularly (bring on the concerned comments, I’m ready!) my fIrst attempt at alcohol was 3-4 weeks post. I had maybe two sips of red wine and it slightly burned a little and I swear I could feel it travel down my intestines. With so little drank, it had no effect on me. second attempt was closer to 2 months post had a few sips of a sugary soju drink and I had a several hour long dumping episode. Not pretty. I probably had 5 or so PARTIAL drinks my ENTIRE weight loss phase. It got me tipsy quickly even with small amounts of less than 1/3 a drink, and I could tell I wouldn’t be able to drive….but I also sobered up really quickly. fast forward to now and i can drink maybe 2 drinks in succession (like in under an hour) and be pretty toasted…if I nurse the drinks over a period of time I can keep from getting too drunk. And I still sober up really quick. oh and I mostly stay away from sugary mixers if I can help it…

    Contrave After Sleeve

Sometimes it takes eating MORE to break a stall. Stalls occur for a couple of reasons: 1) to let your body catch up, and 2) because your metabolism is in starvation mode. If you eat MORE it may trigger your metabolism to speed up since it's no longer in starvation mode. It's counter-intuitive to eat MORE, but it frequently works. Perhaps you could eat 1100-1200 calories a day and see what happens.

Tips for not obsessing about food

If you are a sugar/food addict you will have cravings. Once you obtain from your trigger foods, the craving will pass after a withdrawal period that lasts only a week or two. If you eat even a small qualtity of sugar, flour, rice, potatoes, or processed foods the cravings will probably return and you'll have to go through withdrawal all over again. It gets much easier if you are abstaining. If you don't know if you are a sugar/food addict (or if you suspect you are), I recommend the following books:
  23. Weeks 3-6 are common stall weeks. If you're still stalled after that, then look at switching things up.
  24. Every year our boys' PE hosts a Turkey Run and invites staff to run the mile. Never have I EVER even thought about walking it. Too embarrassed about how I looked, what would jiggle, how long it would take me, that I'd be huffing and puffing... you know all the reasons why. Today, I RAN with them. RAN!! Some of them were still faster, but I had to giggle at all the stragglers who would all of sudden find the energy to run when their librarian was coming up behind them! We were supposed to do 4 laps. I ran 6 and walked 2. So proud of myself. I never, ever thought I'd be a runner. EVER. I started a Couch to 5K app in July, and now I can run 40 consecutive minutes! I'm running 2.5 miles 3 days a week, and I'm signed up to run a 5k in February with the school's team.
  25. I travel at least a week a month. Will typically buy yogurt and hard boiled eggs for breakfasts as well as a case of water to keep in my hotel room. I will typically go to a Whole Foods or Sprouts and grab something for lunch, shredded chicken, salad with chicken, or other protein option I can find. I do lots of business dinners and have had great success just talking to the waiter/waitress about what I can eat and find most very accommodating. You just have to get comfortable with speaking up.
