  1. Babbs, yes it is on my plan already. The surgical practice I went to which is part of the COE in the town where I live and the NUT start people on solids between day 10 and day 14. There really isn't a soft foods stage unless you are having trouble with liquids. Starting day 10 the plan paperwork they gave me is lean Proteins to get in 80 to 100 grams a day and non-starchy veggies. I can use light or fat free salad dressing, mayo, etc. Every surgeon is different and every plan is different. I had a 3 day hospital day and I've seen posts from people who went home in 24 hours. I had a drain during the hospital stay and I've seen posts where some people don't. I also have a slightly larger than normal sleeve my surgeon said because I was a band to sleeve revision in one surgery. He didn't take off quite as much as he normally would so I wouldn't have a risk of leaks.
  2. I am three weeks out from surgery. And yes I can eat regular food without any problems and eat 1000 calories a day easily. A meal is 5 oz of Protein and a salad no problem. I do have a nutritionist but she's on vacation. I'm thinking I got a bigger stomach after the surgery. I have had zero problems with eating anything and I can chug a glass of Water easily too with no problems. I see my surgeon next week. I'm not eating crap food - I'm eating lean protein and veggies but I can still eat more than I should be able to at this point.I think MANY conversion folks feel that way. I know I did. This "I can only sip 2oz of water and I feel like I am drowning " never happened to me. There are as many after surgery diets as there are doctors. Everyone thinks their doc is the most right. But if none of them agree then my thought is there is no scientific answer and they are all GUESSING. SO, just be aware of that when people start judging you and what your doc has you doing. MOST people on here mean well, and they may come off as being harsh but they are providing helpful information along the way and they do care. Others are just food shaming and do nothing other than that...not actually offering any usefulness in their post. Ignore those ones and try not to let it get to you. Most docs do not have people on solids at 3 weeks but I have read the post diets from 3 different hospitals who do. So I am not totally suprised. That being said. It still hurts for me to eat meat. But that is me. If you are 3 weeks out and able to eat 1000 calories of solid food then you might benefit from a 5 day pouch test. You can look it up online but pretty much go back to liquids for a couple days, then mushies, softs, then regular food again. Some people say that helps them get some better restriction. Eating solids...and too much solid too soon and put stress on your staple line. I have also read that it can cause you to stretch out a but more...making it hard to fill up. I don't know how much of that is "bro science " and how much of that is proven science but it can't hurt to do a reset and see how you feel. Also, when you are eating normal food. Make sure you are not drinking with or too soon after. Conversion surgery people already seem to have their food make its way into the lower gi a little faster so don't speed that process up. Eat slow, BUT don't eat so slow that it takes you more than 20 min. I wad doing this very thing!!! I wad taking about 45 min to eat...and could eat a lot. But I sped up just a little bit and started stopping after 20 min and I am filling up on less calories. 1000 calories can add up fast. And really...in the long run....it is what we should eventually be eating. The idea that we live on 500 calories a day for ever is absurd. The point of this honeymoon phase is to help you lose weight WHILE retraining your system to eat healthy. NO ONE GETS FAT ON 1000 CALORIES A DAY OF VEGETABLES AND chicken....unless you are 2. So.... Hang in there. ..listen to your body....and just keep making good choices. Much love!!! Thanks! I saw my surgeon 2 days ago for my post-op follow up and he said he took off about 70% instead of the usual 80% because of the band. He didn't want leaks. He also said that 1,000 calories a day is fine and not to worry about what the NUT says. He said they are more used to dealing with straight sleevers and not revisions. He said revisions can sometimes eat more and I'm doing fine. He told me to just stick to Proteins and hit the goal and then fill in with the non-starchy veggies and not to worry about it. My surgeon's normal plan is for people to start solids between day 10 and day 14 depending on how they feel. Lean proteins and non-starchy veggies. He keeps reminding me every time I see him not to eat mashed potatoes. I hate, loathe and despise mashed potatoes. I told him I'd rather eat canned cat food - at least it has protein. Hahahahahha you go girl! I was eating similar to you...went to liquids 2 meals a day and just eggs for the 3rd meal. Now I am filling up on a lot less. Didn't even take 5 days. But I am losing again. Do what works for you...but if it stops working. ..try mixing it up a little. Remember. ..marathon...not a sprint.

    What about the boobies!?

I had implants pre-sleeve. The nice thing is that my boobs haven't shrunk visibly at all. In fact they look bigger now in relation to the rest of my body. The bad news is, my left implant has now become malpositioned due to the loss of real breast tissue above it and I will likely want a revision. Though I'm going to wait until I'm done losing for that. It's not really that noticeable. I notice it, but even my husband didn't notice it until I pointed it out to him. I was thin when I got my boobs. I pray they still look good when I drop these lbs. I was "thin" too when I got my boobs. I had lift with implants done at the same time as my tummy tuck after having lost 90 pounds "on my own". But then I regained 80 pounds before I was sleeved. Now, post-sleeve, I re-lost those 80 pounds, plus 7 more. My tummy tuck held up GREAT through the re-gain and loss. My only issue is that I now have this malpositioning of my left implant. I don't know if re-gaining breast tissue pushed it around a bit and then it because obvious when I lost that new breast tissue again or what. All I know is that I will probably end up getting a revision. Not in a rush though. It's really only noticeable to me. My husband doesn't care and you can't possibly notice it if I'm wearing clothes or a bra.

    Revision

I had the band removed a couple of months ago due to slip, vomit constantly. I am having my sleeve done July 14th. Couldn't do in one surgery due to risk and need to allow healing time before sleeve is done. The wait in between really sucks but from all the things I am reading in the band to sleeve revision forum I am ready for my sleeve surgery.

    Sleeve or Lap Band?

I had the band and am doing revision to sleeve as my band slipped and was removed a couple of months ag. I spent the last 3 years throwing up every day...that is the long story short. With so many issues with the band I would let it go. If you trust your hospital that provides sleeves and not the one that provides the band that should also be a sign. Many women have had many healthy babies after the sleeve. People are successful with the sleeve, as some are with the band, but the band failed them like it failed me. Read the posts on here in the band to sleeve forum and you can get a feel for what people went through with the band, it is no easier than the sleeve just because it feels less permanent. And it required me to have another surgery after the band failed. Some people suffered with issues such as scar tissue and erosion (holes) when the band was removed making getting a sleeve later more difficult. From my experience you should skip the band and go with the sleeve. Whatever you decide please do some additional research and read the posts on band to sleeve so that you know what could happen with either surgery. I wish you the best of luck. The band was great until it wasn't...
  7. Has anyone had revision? I'm considering it. What's the process like. I'm 2 years out almost in August.

    RNY or Mini Gastric Bypass?

I had an MGB done as a revision surgery after a failed sleeve gastrectomy. So far (2 months out) I'm doing very good and I'm really happy with the procedure. My main concern with the MGB is GAS. Really bad, bad, bad GAS problem. I have red in a MGB dedicated forum about it and as far I know there is nothing you can do. If there is someone that can help....please jump in!

  10. I had band to sleeve revision May 28. I love my sleeve. It is so different than the band. I wish I had done this years ago. My band slipped MAy 2014 they removed all the saline and I gained back 87 lbs of the 100 that I had lost with the band. I am 4 weeks post op today with the sleeve and I have lost 19 lbs. I think it's going to be a slow steady losing pace but I am also learning good eating habits along the way. I also am 50.

    VSG revision to Gastric Bypass

Hey all! I will be revised from my sleeve to gastric bypass on July 20th due to a pretty large hiatal hernia as well as gerd.. I have lost about 70 pounds and I am over a year out from the first surgery. I have heard the weight loss is slower the second time around and I am just curious on what the weight loss has been for others in a revision. Would love any feedback on weight loss!

    First appointment!

Hi Leesa and welcome into the light! For my first appointment with my surgeon my vitals (weight, height, BP and temp) were taken. I saw him for the consult where he asked about my weight history and attempts at dieting and what happened. He asked did I have any thoughts on what procedure I wanted and I told him I wanted the sleeve because I already have Vitamin deficiencies and the malabsorption of the RNY seemed to not be a good fit for me. I also did not want the lap band because for me I didn't want a foreign body in me and I didn't want to have to have "fills" done forever. He aged that the sleeve was a great option for me. After seeing him I was taken to their insurance person who went over my coverage and gave me a checklist of things to get done and paperwork to gather. I had to do blood work, an upper GI, an EKG, I had to get a letter of recommendation for the procedure from my primary care, I had to get copies of doctor notes from my primary care for 2 years. Most of those things were required by my specific insurance. She gave me an overview of the process and what to expect with timing. Then I saw the nutritionist for an initial conversation. She asked me about eating habits and gave me a copy of the diet that would be required prior to surgery. For me I had to do a 2 week pre-op diet to shrink my liver to make surgery less risky. As far as pro's and con's of the procedures I can't answer those but I will say that I see a lot of folks who had lap bands being revised to sleeves here. The sleeve is a relatively newer procedure but seems to be taking the place of the lap band. For questions I would ask if a hospital stay is required (I was done as an outpatient) Ask about pre-op visits as well as hat they require post-op (when you will see him) Everyone is different and your weight loss is a percentage so there is no specific goal to ask about typically. Ask about the pre-op diet and what their plan is post-op (every surgeon seems to be different) Call your insurance and ask for a copy of the coverage for bariatric surgery. They will mail you a copy of what is required and covered. I did that because the surgeons office asked for a copy. Good luck!
  13. Everyone is different for sure. I'm 4 weeks out and easily getting 1,000 calories a day in Protein and veggies. My dietician says it's too high and my surgeon says it's just fine and not to listen to the dietician because I'm a band to sleeve revision. He said that's going to be different from a straight sleeve.

    Why did you choose bypasd?

Originally I wanted the Bypass but because of my multiple sclerosis and potential for steroidal use during flare ups my doc wouldn't do it and I was given the sleeve. I was successful, lost over one hundred pounds but gained reflux.....Last year I had some serious health issues of which I was immobile and have since gained forty pounds back. I am now scheduled for the Bypass there is still a potential for steroidal concerns but at the moment not an issue. September 21st is my date. If you have been on many boards, you may see my reply that I wish I had just went with the Bypass to begin with. Well.....prayerfully and with therapy, third time is a charm - I have had the lapband, revised to sleeve and soon revised to bypass. Best wishes
  15. My surgeon allows solid foods at day 10 if you are tolerating liquids well. Lean Proteins of any kind plus green Beans, summer squash and zucchini. I'm on week 4 and saw him yesterday. He told me any lean Protein and any non-starchy veggies were fine now. He also said not to worry about the calories - just stick to the food plan, avoid carbs except from non-starchy veggies. He told me that the dieticians are more used to working with direct sleeve patients and it's a little different for people like me that revised from band to sleeve. I eat around 1,000 calories a day and he said that's fine.

    Lap band conversion to ?

I chose to revise to the sleeve instead of the bypass because the malabsorption issue was one I didn't want to deal with. My surgeon told me yesterday he took off about 70% of my stomach instead of the normal 80% - he left more so that where my band was and where my esophagus met the stomach I wouldn't be prone to getting a leak. The weight loss may be slower but for me, slow and steady wins the race and I just didn't feel right about the bypass for me personally.
  17. I specifically asked my nutritionist and bariatric coordinator about calories and both said that at this point it's not the focus and they wouldn't give me a number. The BC did tell someone at a support group meeting that she was eating too few calories at 400-600, but they still don't give a number to strive for. I think it's freeing because it gives me more energy to devote to figuring out what I can tolerate and focus on lean Protein. Last night I was really nervous because I had a frozen dinner that was 440 calories, but in the end I didn't eat the whole thing, it had good protein content, and I really hadn't eaten much the rest of the day. For the most part I eat homemade foods, so having this number in front of me made me all weird. I'm only a month out from revision (my first surgery was 5.5 years ago), so eventually I will start tracking my foods again on MFP, etc, but for this period I'm just going to focus on making healthy decisions. It's making it so much easier to make it a lifestyle without being tied to numbers, etc.

    Why did you choose bypasd?

Sleeve was not an option for me, but I chose bypass over lap-band because of the risk of complications associated with lap-band. My MOM is having bypass next month and she chose bypass over sleeve for two reasons. 1) Studies have shown patients with Type II Diabetes who have bypass get rid of the diabetes faster than those who have sleeve. 2) Dumping when you eat something that is too sugary or greasing doesn't appear to happen with the sleeve and she wants to use it as an incentive to keep from 'cheating'. I will say that I have two relatives who've had the sleeve. My cousin has lost over 100 pounds and is doing well. My uncle who first had a failed lap-band, then revised to a sleeve, has not had significant weight loss and eats as bad as ever. I think it's a good tool, but I think it requires commitment. I hope that helps.
  19. I've heard people complaining about pain at he port removal site. Did anyone need more than one week? I work a desk job but I have a 1hr commute each way so I'm worried about energy level one week post op.
  20. My revision is taking place next Tuesday
  21. Hey everybody.... I'm 6 days out RNY. Still in clear liquid phase. I'm having a lot of gas rumbling between my chest and pressure in my lower abdomen, and major pain in my left shoulder (they said gases take hold in the shoulder) and ribs. I've taken two doses of liquid painkillers, but it won't go away. I even took two gas-x chewables, waiting to see if that helps. Should I be alarmed? I don't know what is normal pain, what is not. My revision was profoundly painful. PollyO

    Lower left side belly pain

I am 5 weeks post op and that pain just subsided last week. I was told it was common especially for revision patients. Do not push so hard! I had to dial it back too and use a heating pad every evening. Stretching helped me too.

    Lap band conversion to ?

I had the band to bypass revision 5 weeks ago and so far it has been great! My band had slipped and I was having bad reflux and gained back a bunch of weight. The surgeon removed ALOT of scar tissue from the band and had to remove part of my stomach but I healing well and losing weight on track. I was just told at my last appointment that I am loosing faster than most revision patients. I should have done the bypass in the beginning. Good Luck!

    Lap band conversion to ?

I had lap band placed in 2009, lost about 40 lbs the first 3 months and ended up pregnant. Gained all the weight back and then some. Tried fills after having my daughter, but nothing really worked. So, I'm now trying to convert to another wls and just so unsure which way to go. I have been researching, youtubing, and reading forums. My dr removed my lap band in May 2015. No issues with reflux, slippage, erosions, etc. I initially decided on the sleeve, but I've read so many issues such as slow or no weight loss due to being a conversion, sleeve revising to bypass, and sleeves starting to have more issues with leaks. I guess I need to stay offline. Bypass is considered the "gold standard", but I'm scared about the rerouting, taking vitamins for the rest of my life, and of course...leaks. So, I guess I need feedback on your experiences and why you chose to convert to bypass or sleeve. Also, anybody with slow weight loss or other issues with sleeve that had conversion done in 1 surgery versus 2 surgeries, I would like to hear your experiences as well.
