  1. I have been "heavy" my entire life, but I started getting morbidly obese about 15 yeas ago after a back injury. I had two back surgeries, first one 8/2007, second one in 11/2009. I also broke my left ankle (for the 5th time) in 10/2010. After a major foot surgery in 3/2011, I decided to go for the sleeve. About a month out from surgery, I got pregnant and abandoned my WLS plans for the time being. I had the baby (best thing ever!!) and got back on track for surgery in October of 2013. I then caught the NORO virus from my kid and spend two days sitting on the toilet and vomiting into the waste basket. That freaked me out so much that I backed off from the surgery. My back and foot pain was getting worse (one of the five screws in my foot/ankle had broken and wow, the pain has been intense!) and all the doctors were telling me it would never get better until I lost about 100 lbs. at least. At the time, I was about 330. The doctor for my foot told me that he would have to take out all the pins, put in thicker ones, and reinforce the area with steal plates. This did not sound like it was going to help get me out of pain. So, back to the bariatric surgeon. I started with this again in February of 2015. My doc put me on a diet pill to help with appetite suppression, and I lost almost 50 lbs. from March 2015 - June 2015. It took a while to get all of the insurance requirements met, but it was finally approved, and my surgery was on July1. This is my 4th week post-op, and while it has not been easy, I would not go back. I had the sleeve because I did not want to have as many issues with malnutrition as I have heard can happen with bypass. I know that I will eventually get to eat real food again, just not nearly as much, and I am so happy with the weight loss. The biggest issue I am having is getting my Protein. I am a vegetarian and the idea of drinking milk repulses me. I am not a vegan, will eat cheese and yogurt, it is just milk that grosses me out. Soy milk was not something I wanted to try, but I find the light vanilla and light chocolate is palatable. I am still experimenting with different protein supplements, but I feel confident I will eventually find one that I can get down. I have found a few suggestion on this forum that give me hope. :-)

    Cheated on liquid diet

@@rln52 I'm on 4 Protein powder "meals" a day and six servings a day of any of the following: unsweetened applesauce, sf Jello, sf pudding, oatmeal, ff sf yogurt, raw or cooked veggies.
  3. I have eaten more food this last week than I have since my surgery in June 2014 and I loss a few pounds. I have been stalled for months. I know the problem has been me working out 5/6 days a week but yet not eating enough food to fuel my body. I have been afraid to eat more then a few ounces of anything. I pretty much live off Protein bars/shakes, tuna, salads, yogurt, cottage cheese, string cheese, nuts, eggs, etc. This week I made it a point to eat... not just eat but eat real food and the scale finally moved. Thank Goodness!!!

    Aspartame

@@choosehope I have the exact same problem and was very worried about what to do when I started this process. I was able to eat yo plait light yogurt as it does not contain aspartame. I was told by my nut that I should not worry and avoid any foods, drinks with aspartame. For example I was told to eat yogurt with sugar in it or pudding with real sugar in it. Leverage honey or agave nectar instead. this because you eat so little of it if you follow the food plan. Yogurts and puddings for me is where I eat sugar. I do use sugar free syrup but it is very very rare that I even eat anything where I need syrup. It does become more difficult for you when you think about what to drink. I don't use any sugar free products at all with the exception of yo plait light. I drink water only. I sometimes will infuse it with real fruit if I get sick of plain water but for me that is not a problem. This can be done without artificial sweeteners of any kind. Prior to having bariatric surgery I suffered from migraines 5 out of 7 days per week. I use Dihydroergotamine rescue shots to relieve them when I get them which makes them go away within the first hour. Now I probably get them 2 or 3 times a month if that! The high protein low carb diet has really helped me with headaches. I used to get them so bad that I developed arthritis in my jaw from clenching due to the pain. My neurologist told me this is common for people who suffer long term. I am 52. My son and 11 year old granddaughter get them as well. It is probably the worst pain and is intolerable and trust me, I have had 5 spinal surgeries. I know pain! I hope that WLS helps you with your migraines as well. I was not expecting it to and was quite surprised! Good luck!

    What's for Breakfast?!

This morning I had a hard boiled egg and a piece of toast with a schmear of Brummel & Brown. And coffee. Most weekday mornings, though, it's yogurt or cottage cheese.

    What irritates your sleeve?

My sleeve likes cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, protein shakes with milk...pretty well all dairy. Eggs, turkey are a definite no go, chicken is starting to be tolerable but no more than two ounces, soft and chewed extremely well before swallowing! I haven't even tried any other meats because they seem to cause me problems at this stage!

    What Are Your Must-Have Foods?

I have stated many times my love for Chobani key lime blended greek yogurt. I stock up when it's on sale, and when it's not I still make sure that I have plenty on hand. I actually get nervous when I see my husband eating one of MY yogurts (possessive am I?). I also like to have Quest protein bars in the house at all times. Flavored bottled water (s.f.), Crystal light are some other keep in stock items.

    Aspartame

@@choosehope - I couldn't eat the SF popsicles or Jello, made me sick. I couldn't even swallow it too strong of a taste like @@dbfn had mentioned. I didn't know about the cinnamon so I may try that in the plain greek yogurt with a banana.
  9. I actually get between 60 and seventy. So here goes, breakfast I have cheese or peanut butter on an English, for about ten grams. Lunch is greek yogurt for 12 or tuna for around fifteen or leftover protein from the night before for up to twenty grams supper is usually, pork or chicken for around twenty grams. I then have two protein snacks to make it up to at least sixty. That's one between lunch and supper and the other after supper before bed.

    So happy and desperate!

My surgeon doesn't let you leave the hospital until you have eaten some yogurt and apple puree etc. It's yet another area which is inconsistent across surgeons. I don't think anything bad will happen physically but you don't want to get in the habit of going off your plan. Up to you I think.

Roll call all who had surgery JUNE 2015

@@Sherri1964 - if it is too dry it will often get stuck or at least it feels that way and is quite painful. Generally (with me anyway) I have to vomit to get it out because it just won't go down. If I have some sort of dip (hummus, Greek yogurt dip, etc) that seems to help it go down easier.

    MILK

I do have Kroger! I rarely go but I will now. I knew about the CARB matter yogurt but didn't know they had milk!!! Awesome thank you!

    What Are Your Must-Have Foods?

SF Popsicles... Pretty sure I have an addiction. I love them to snack on. A few other things would be eggs, Greek yogurt, protein shakes and water.
  15. I'm kind of glad to hear that other people were disappointed that they hadn't experienced dumping. I was actually kind of hoping to because it would be a really effective deterrent - I'm a glutton, not a masochist. But I've tried really hard to stay away from anything over about 10 grams of sugar. The only exception is my Protein shake which I put a whole banana in, which, depending on the size of the banana can have as much as 20 grams of sugar in it. Like @@Djmohr, I also can't do artificial sweetener, or at least, I can tolerate only a very small amount. The only time I've experienced anything close top dumping was when I tried a sugar free maple syrup from Whole Foods that was made with Maltitol (a sugar alcohol). I was in the bathroom for an hour! I use about a teaspoon of SweetLeaf stevia in my tea in the morning and I've discovered I really enjoy the Enlightened ice cream bars which have Eryithritol in them, but that's really it. I do sometimes put dark chocolate chunks in my plain greek yogurt but the total never exceeds 10g of sugar. I also made a really good pumpkin zucchini bread with unflavored Protein powder and I used dark chocolate and honey in it. A slice had 10.9 grams of sugar in it.
  16. I'm 13 days post OP I ran on the elliptical today for 35 minutes, and have every day since I was cleared to at my post OP appt last Thursday I've also mixed in some light lifting....doc said as long as it didn't hurt in places it shouldn't I would be fine...no cruches I am the cook in my family, and cooked again the day after I got home from the hospital Truthfully. I wasn't even tempted. I felt so full just sipping Clear liquids the food I was cooking wasn't even tempting. I suspect you will have the same thing My biggest issue is Protein intake. The only way I can still get to my protein goal (for me, 100g a day, I'm a big guy...former college football player)!is through shakes (or Soups, but hot Soup in the middle of the day in the south in July...um...no). I was cleared for yogurts and then mashies when I felt comfortable, but I couldn't get down even half of a 100 calories yogurt. At my size and activity level that's nowhere near the calories or protein I need. It's like..I can feel slightly full on a 190 calories, 30 gram of Protein shake, or full to the top on 50 calories or yogurt I guess what I am saying is be prepared for a whole new food calculus. The way you think about food will totally change. You will be fine. I've lost 40 pounds since my pre-OP weigh in on June 26th. And 25 pounds since my surgery on 7/13. You can do it! It will be easier than you think

    Problems

Never said I can eat a large quantity just I am always afraid to fail. I have amazing days, I always have my Protein shakes and Greek yogurt. I am not a failure just needed some guidance. Just I have not had anything my pouch does not agree with.

Still weigh more than surgery day!

Put the yogurt away! To many carbs! Eat cottage cheese instead. Try isopure zero carb protein mix with almond milk. Cut out the carbs and you will loose weight with the quickness.

    What Are Your Must-Have Foods?

Protein bars, turkey jerky, raw unsalted almonds, walnuts, pecans and sunflower seeds. Belvita breakfast biscuits, peanut butter, Gatorade 2 and Propel. Cheese sticks, fresh fruit. I buy many of these at Costco, in larger quantities as they keep for a long time. The fruit I just buy as needed. And yes, my downfall...........WW ice cream bars or vanilla frozen yogurt.

    What Are Your Must-Have Foods?

I had an interesting realization the other day. I realized that although I continue to love vanilla Oikos yogurt, I also like other kinds of Greek yogurt that I had been avoiding due to my Oikos vanilla habit. It was actually a bit of a pleasant surprise to consciously recognize my “need” to stock up on that one flavor and brand of yogurt and to realize that other brands and flavors would be fine in a pinch…so I don’t need to waste energy being anxious about running out of my original preference. But still, there are foods I won’t go without, and to make sure I don’t, I stock up on them. I always have yogurt in the fridge, blueberries in the freezer, and tuna in the pantry. Some of us are naturally more inclined to stock up than others, but being on a strict meal plan like you are on after weight loss surgery makes it seem more important than before to insure you have the foods you need in the house. Otherwise, you might find yourself reaching for some regrettable alternatives…like potato chips instead of carrot sticks, or ice cream instead of yogurt. What are the snack foods you need to have around your house (or car or workplace)? How many of them do you feel the need to keep around? Do you stock up whenever they’re on sale?
  21. UGH that's rough. I have a weakness for ice cream, too. I used to sit and eat it with a spoon right out of the carton. Rocky Road was my favorite. Because I don't think I can control myself, I've had it exactly 1 time since surgery. And it was a couple spoonfuls from those machines at an all you can eat buffet type place. If I do decide to indulge, I'll stick with frozen yogurt
  22. I can graze on nuts and craisins all day... I have a beach mix with almonds, plantain chips, coconut slivers, yogurt covered raisins and pecans. I keep a measuring cup in the jar to ensure a 1/4 cup serving... If I get too hungry, my blood sugar gets unstable and I get light headed and shaky... Keeping this with me helps at the office or running errands when I need some quick protein. But eating 1290 calories a day using My Fitness Pal, taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator, parking further away AND doing the treadclimber for 30 min every other day would get me maintenance and if I'm lucky - a 1lb loss... So, it's hard even NOT eating crap. BTW, I'm 54 and was sleeved in 2012...

    Post op dry heaves

You really need to call your surgeon, and your nutritionist, if you weren't given the information well before hand in papers or a book, on what to do after surgery. I'm surprised, you usually even get discharge instructions from the hospital when you left. Mine said exactly what I was to be doing. Getting in fluids, and doing liquid diet, until I was told to do differently. I can't imagine how yogurt is approved this soon after surgery. I was on liquids for a few weeks after surgery.
  25. I need help. Can anyone tell me what's a good flavorless protein powder I can put in my yogurt, soup &etc... I'm 6 days post op and I need to start getting some protein in.
