Why I am in love with my Lap-Band

Hey @mom2001 - lovely to hear from you! April 6th - oh my goodness, so close!!! Yes, the headache is just you detoxing. I think many (if not all?) of us really had a couple of YUCK first two or three days, and yes, headache was part of it. For me the headache went away around day 3-4, and I started feeling AMAZING. I was NOT hungry and felt great on the Protein shakes I was having. I will admit that I burst into tears day 10 of 14 from the frustration of craving something SALTY or CHEWY or ANYTHING other than Fluid. It passes. Just like everything with the lap-band, the WHATEVER passes. It's a wonderful thing that you are doing this for yourself - appearance, health, whatever. :-) No matter what, you will benefit from (and LOVE!) the band! I did it for my health, but I have to tell you - the benefits in my appearance, how I feel (No more pain!) and my overall well-being have been tremendous!

    Boob job after lapband?

I don't mean to scare you but you asked for honest answers about what to expect from breast augmentation... All I can say is that a C-section, nose job, tummy tuck and lab band surgery that I've all had are all a piece of cake compared to having a breast job! I had it done 10 years ago and it was the most painful thing I have ever gone through! Again, I don't want to scare you but help prepare you for the reality of what you are going to endure. The put the implant under the muscle therefore just by lifting your arms to your chin is like pulling teeth. Would I do it over again? In a heartbeat! It just was so painful and the recovery was very intense! Beauty is pain. Everyone has to determine how much of it they are willing to go through to achieve it. I wish you the best and beautiful breasts!

    Post Op And Feeling Great!

Wow...you're daring! I came to work for the first time today, and have done really well. I need to find out from my doctor's office what exactly I need to be shooting for, for Protein, etc, a day. I found these great 3oz protein bullets, and just want to make sure I do everything by the book as long as I can. I've spent way too much money (all out of pocket), and want this to work so bad, that I don't want to jeapordize anything. I can't wait for Thursday though, as that's gonna be pudding DAY!!! My favorite thing to eat now is sugar-free banana pops. Can't get enough and they're only 10 cals! BOOYAH!
  4. Kiwi, I have learned that chewing very, very well and going slow is a must! Put down the fork between bites and talk, read if alone, etc. I have not been able to eat raw broccoli yet, tried it twice in Chinese dishes, and if not cooked well, it just sits in tummy and eventually comes back up. Beef is still hard to digest and not worth the bad feeling, chicken, turkey, fish go down easily. If I eat too fast, when that last bite can't go down, it will come back. You learn what your sleeve likes and does not like pretty quickly. I will try broccoli again, but not til 6 month mark, as instructed. Feeling full now is in a different spot, more at bottom of esophagus, not in normal tummy spot. That was wierd, but adjusted easily. Putting on clothes and having them be too big to wear is so worth the other changes. At 10 weeks post op I have no regrets!

Have to do a 50 Carbs per day dier

eggs fish, and low to no carb protein drinks. My pre op diet was a meal replacement protein shake for breakfast and lunch, and then I ate 3-4oz. tilapia fillets for dinner. Did this for 10 days, lost 12lbs. Drink water in between meals to reduce cravings and hunger. Also drinking ice water burns more calories then room temp water.
  6. The key to this, I have found, is the fills. When you start losing restriction (can eat more) you may need another fill. I had 10 fills the first year (banded 12/7/07) and one just the other day. The wt loss is slow, but it always came off the best right after my fills. I would get a fill, lose 3-4 lbs, then stay the same weight until the next fill. To me, that was always the key - keeping up with fills.
  7. I am 10 months out from surgery, I lost 35 lbs on the liquid/mushie stage and then no more, actually gained a few back from Halloween to Valentines day. Keep getting your fills, you will know when you have finally found your "sweet spot". I skipped a few fills which I do not reccommend and finally found it at 6.8 cc I have lost 8 lbs in 4 weeks. Do not give up, keep getting you fills and watching what you eat.
  8. Surgery 9/14/12 HW: 225 CW:160 GW:145-150 Have lost 5 sizes and over 65 inches. Totally happy with my sleeve. Currently a size 8 and hope to lose about 10 more lbs. I know these last 10 are going to be slower. I have started besides cardio really doing strength training (squats, crunches, weights and bands) just in my own den every night and in a very short amount of time, everything is really toning up!
  9. Sleeved 9/13, weight at that time 314lbs, today 1/12/13 252.4lbs so around 61lbs lost. (From March when I started the journey I weighed 378 so approximately 128lbs lost over the last 10 months.)
  10. Lol 9/26/12 down 40 244 the day of my sleeve today 213 5'6 3 kids lol 19 12 and 6 My hair is healthy and even got stronger never lost any of it so far
  11. Hi All, We did Thanksgiving here first time in too many years to remember we were planning on 17-19 people so I only made the turkey, stuffing, a duck rolls and a cake with a day's worth of calories in it. I started the morning with a protein shake and was feeling satisfied until our dinner. I ate a little bit of everything made sure I ate the duck meat first the veggies next so I was happy with just a taste of mashed potatoes, stuffing and cake.
  12. i called the insurance co to see if they pay for the sleeve, and they do . 3 Week Stall

For those of you who have had or are having the 3 week stall, I found a great article that explains the reason why this happens. It's about plateau's in general, but it really sheds some light on the 3 week stall. It doesn't use that exact phrase, but you'll know it when you read it. The author uses the phrase," the inevitable stall"....here is the crux of it. "A "stall" a few weeks out is inevitable, and here's why. Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a saber tooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored." http://www.dsfacts.c...or-plateau.html

    May 3rd

Winding down the final week before the big day. I have been all over the place thinking about how life will be different and also a little nervous for the actual operation. I know they do a lot of these but still I am concerned about the outcome. So much of my life business wise happens around food. I worry about how I will be able to handle those situations. I have lost over 23 pounds since I started this process. Almost 10 this week being on a pre opt diet. I feel better about myself with each pound I lose. So straight ahead I go. I commented to make this work i want to get healthy sick of the weight and everything that brings with it.

    Day 5 post-op & feeling down

You need to spend time asking yourself why you are "fat" . There are reasons we are fat, and the problem with the lapband and ANY bariatric surgery is that the surgery WILL NOT CHANGE WHY you are obese. You will skirt around the band and form maladaptive feeding patterns, just as you have being overweight. I say this with all the love and respect of a fat person myself! I've been banded for 10 mths, 55 pound weight loss. There is alot of mental stuff that you have to fix along with the diet. The weight is all symptoms of something else. Food should be a source of nutrition and not emotional fullfillment. Good luck! God bless...I struggle with this EVERYDAY!

    Junior/misses Section

i know EXACTLY what you mean - i just started shopping in the regular section myself and every time i walk in a store now i have to stop myself from going straight to plus size. No one would undrestand that but us - but you are right it is a SURREAL experience - hard to get our minds wrapped around the new reality. i was at a thrift store yesterday and just for the heck of it bought 2 pairs of size 10 jeans (i started at 276 am now 169.6) - thinking i would just lose more weight and eventually get in them. I brought them home and both pair fit - a little snug but totally wear-able. I could not believe it. BEST OF LUCK TO US ALL ON OUR JOURNEYS!!!!

    Learning to be this size...

Chris NJ, Your weight loss ticker is awsome - how did you loose so much weight since May?? I was banded on 10-25-07 and have only lost 30lbs since then. Overall 55lbs, I lost 25 on my own before the surgery.

    Going to see Oprah!!!

I am from the southwest burbs and it is still pretty cold in Chicago in feb. Last year we had an ice storm on my b-day (feb 8th) The average is in the upper 30's but it will feel cooler downtown as you are closer to the lakefront. Here are the averages for Chicago http://weather.yahoo.com/climo/USIL0225_f.html You can also get a 10 day forecast right before you leave from here. We have a saying in Chicago, if you don't like the weather, stand still it will change really soon. We had a beautiful day on Friday, light jackets and I actually wore capris, then yesterday were got like 4.5 inches of snow. Come prepared for rain, ice and upper 30's to lower 40's. I would like to suggest a place for lunch or dinner the day of the taping. Right across the street is a place called Flat Top Grill, it is really cool, you make your own stir-fry or soup and they cook it to your liking. They have a web-site www.flattopgrill.com The food is really good, they have let me eat at the child's price before and it is all you can eat for everyone else. If you don't like what you have made, try something else no problem. Let me know if there is anything else you are looking to do, maybe I can give you some pointers. ~Mandy

Stir in broth and milk. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer until quinoa is tender, stirring occasionally, approximately 10-12 minutes. Feeling depressed and Lost... need some help.

Maybe you brain needed time to adjust to your new body. Sometimes when things in my life are changing too rapidly for my brain to accept it, I find myself putting it aside, then when I am ready to face it again I do. Sometimes this can be a week or 6 months. Don't be sad, you only regained 15 lbs, that means you are still down 35! If you hadn't had the band would you have been down the 50 at all? Or would you be like me and had the annual 10-15 added to where you started. You said you feel lost so here is a map that I would use to get back on track. I would start journaling what I am eating so that I could take an objective look at it (I will lie to myself on occasion), start doing some exercising so that when you get the fill you will be ready to start dropping that weight (even if its just walking around the block). And check in with us. Everyone here has been though most of these things or will go through them. Come on we can do it together...
  21. Hi, I was banded on July 24. I am 4 weeks out (this Thursday) from my surgery. I've been doing really well. I've been holding my own. I have not gained any of the weight back. My first fill is Sept. 3. I also learned that it is NOT unusual to gain weight at this time. This is the time that your stomach is healing. Weight loss is not expected at this time. I lost my feeling of fullness ( 2-3 oz), a week and a half after my 1 week post-op check-up. I've been concentrating on protein. It feels kinda weird.. like I'm doing the Adkins thing. I've been staying away from bread. Whether it be at resturants or if I go out for a burger, I just eat the meat and loose the bun. I've been eating a wide variety of things, but concious of how much. I can eat about 6-10 oz at a meal. I also stop eating before I feel full. I figure that's enough, and I was lucky to have it. I know once I get my fill, I'll be back to 2-3 oz a meal. BUt that will be OK and I will be satisfied. Hang in there. The flat tire has been fixed now it 's just smooth sailing on the road to being thin.:wink2:
  22. Okay so I had my surgery December the 21st 2007. I know I know right before Christmas!! But that's a totally different story!! I did okay...I was allergic to my pain pills so I had to go cold turkey on pain but I believe that it was for the best. I had my first check up last thursday and I have lost 21 lbs and I have already came of my blood pressure pills!! What a relief that was. If anything about my life was worrysome it was those blasted blood pressure pills at 19. My friends were always so nervous and worried about me and that wasn't a great feeling. Don't get me wrong it showed that they cared but I felt like a burden on them. But the not eating much thing has been rough. I was an emotional eater and during my first 2 weeks I went through some rough stuff and lots of stress because I took my finals the day before surgery and I was waiting on grades...rough let me tell you! But everything turned out great!! I am so excited that I found this site! I have been needing to get peoples opinnion and stories for support and comfort and this is such a blessing!! If anyone has any great recipes or wants to share their experience with me I am more than welcoming it!! Thanks so much!! Ashley

    sleep centers are a scam

OMG, I've been on a cpap for a little over a year and I can't sleep without it!! I sleep like crap if I go without my ambien, ativan, and cpap. They keep me NORMAL!! Like without those 3 I sleep for 12+ hours a night and still don't feel rested, with those 3 things I sleep 8-10 hours and feel perfectly fine when I wake up. But I don't think my weight started my sleep apnea, because the sleeping for 12+ hours a night has been a problem my entire life, I think my weight just made it worse. I do think I had to send in my records from my sleep doctor to my lap band doctor. They shouldn't have given you a surgery date if they didn't have everything in order. They did that to my mom's worker and her husband, but for a different reason. I've never been given a date, so I never had anything changed or taken away from me. I still don't have the final approval for my band. I go tomorrow for my FINAL pre-op crap for my insurance!! I'm hoping everything goes well tomorrow so that the surgery doesn't get pushed back anymore. It's already been almost a year since I started the process for my insurance, it was only supposed to take 6 months, but since I didn't have enough "stability" in my life according to some skinny witch that's never been fat!! But she was kind of right... but she gave me my approval Tuesday. Okay, that's just my .02

    So many questions about Mexico

There are several surgeons in Mx to choose from. The price range varies from 4k - 11k. Experience, location (coastal vs boarder town), and venue (clinic vs hospital) plays a big part in the pricing. If you're going alone two surgeons stand out due to them having very hands on coordinators in Tijuana. Dr. Ponce de Leon/Trish and Dr. Illan/Omar. Dr. Alvarez and Dr. Aceves are the most expensive but they also have excellent reputations on both sides of the boarder. Dr. A. Ortiz and Dr. Pompa both work out International Centers of Excellence (I.C.E) and Dr. A. Ortiz has been doing WLS (mostly Lapband I think) for a long time. I don't know as much about Dr. Pompa. A Lighter Me has been in TJ for 10 years and they have different surgeons to choose from and different locations like TJ, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Guadalajara, and more I believe. ALM's feature surgeon is Dr. Lopez. Ready 4 a Change and ALM were once one company. I believe they have similar locales. Their pricing is similar. Their feature surgeon is Dr. F. Garcia. He has about 8+ years experience. Very well reviewed. Dr. Almanza at Jerusalem Hospital is very well known. His hospital is a clinic. There are many threads about him. Those are the names I know best and have researched at one time or another. I chose Dr. Lopez with ALM although I may switch to Dr. A. Ortiz. I have sleep apnea and a heart issue, SVT, that kicks in every once in awhile and I think an I.C.E. location might calm my nerves. I'm sure there are many others who can chime in with even more data and expand this list. Good luck. Amanda Rae
  25. I had NEVER "competed" in athletic events as an adult until after WLS. Yes, I was walking a lot and hiking, but I had not actually swum laps or ridden a bike in decades. Then a friend talked me into a sprint triathlon (swim 400 m, bike 14,2 miles, run/walk 5K). I thought, "I can do that now, " so I registered. I got a bike that suited me and started swimming. Oh my goodness, it was hard. I discovered my old shoulder injuries prevented me from a freestyle stroke, so I did my best with breast stroke. My ortho forbids me to run on my knee replacement, so I walk fast. It was a lot of work, but the fact that I had committed to someone and had registered, made me stick with it. When I finished, and got my participation medal, I was in tears - it was such a milestone moment. I have committed to another one in March - same distances, but now I have a lot more baseline training under my belt and I am working to perfect my breast stroke, learn to speed walk, and am working on my biking efficiency. I only want to better my own time - not beat anyone else, like that is even possible! I also am registered for the 50 mile bike race/ride in 10 days. Again, I might have given up if I had not already paid and made the commitment - and... I want another participation medal! So I think those paying registrations (especially if they go to a worthy cause) help to keep me on track with regular training. It would me so easy to skip a riding day, but I can't do that with a 50 mile event coming up. I also want to hike the 830 mile AZ trail, and have several friends who also want to do that . So we are marking our calendars for which segments we will do first. Next October we have committed to 2 northern segments that include the Grand Canyon - down and up in one day. (No medal, but I will definitely buy an "I did it" T-shirt! So I will need to get in a lot of hiking miles before that really BIG event! No room for failure - failure means a very expensive evacuation! Again, it is about built in accountability - making a commitment and having fun with people you know,
