I totally did it -- traveled 3 weeks after surgery, across country. In my carryon, I packed an empty shaker bottle and packets of Syntrax nectar to mix in to Water I got from the flight attendant. :-) I took an anti-nausea pill about 45 minutes before boarding, to make me a little sleepy and ensure I wouldn't get queasy. You need to make sure your doctor is okay with it, but I was pretty firm about it, I was going for the Jewish high holy days, and it wasn't optional. :-)

I had my first appointment scheduled with a bariatric surgeon on Tuesday, January 9th. This particular bariatric center was highly recommended by my brother in law, and they provide services to our local area and surrounding cities. The one problem though is that I have had difficulties getting appointments at the clinic in my city, although there always seem to be openings in the surrounding areas, so really it wasn't too bad. There is another bariatric clinic in our area and I decided to give them a call, just to get a vibe. I figured that I would chat with them, and perhaps meet with both clinics to see which was a better fit. To my surprise, the new clinic was so much more involved, especially in the educational process before the surgery. We scheduled an appointment on Monday already, to start the program. They also provided me with a personal website that I can use to track documents needed for insurance, required classes, vitamins, etc. Right away, I felt so welcomed and so excited. They had a series of 5 videos that I had to watch before the appointment on Monday, so I watched those today and they were very informing. I am also required to attend a series of 6 educational classes with them, before my surgery. Those classes consist of pre-surgery nutrition, post-surgery nutrition, vitamins and supplements, and exercise. I will also have my regular psych. appointments and other appointments as needed for the surgery. The thing that really made me feel good about them though was reading the glowing reviews online. I think the choice was pretty clear at that point. I am so excited to get this all going. I start a three-month supervised diet on Friday, so when I think about it, there is a lot to do in those three months. Time is going to fly by!

I had my revision surgery (band to sleeve) on 8/11/2015. It took about 6 weeks before the large incision stopped hurting. A couple of my incisions are a little tender if I press on them, but at this point, they don't hurt. My surgeon sent me home with something called On-Q, which is a local anesthetic pain pump. This thing was GREAT! It kept my abdomen numb for the first several days. I was discharge on Friday. On Sunday, it was time to remove it. Some may be a bit squeamish about it, but it was very simple. I just had to pull the two catheters out and put a Band-Aid on the incision. Even after the removal of On-Q, I stayed numb for about 2 more days. Sorry for the tangent! Best wishes to you on your journey!

Brandy - I don't feel food going through my band. My 10cc band was completely filled and then my doctor put in an extra .2 (for pressure he said). I was fine for about 6 weeks ... it was great because I finally felt the restriction that everyone was talking about .... then, I don't know why, but all of a sudden I couldn't keep any food down and had to have an unfill - my doctor took out 1.2 ccs and I gained back 5 pounds in two months. Yesterday he put a little fill back and I'm hoping the same thing doesn't happen again. You're probably already doing this, but for the tightness in your throat, maybe you have to eat a lot less at each sitting, but eat more often to make sure you get enough nutrition. My doctor told me that if you eat too much volume, it sits in your esophagus. Don't know if that's the case with you, but just thought I'd mention it as a possibility. I hope everything works out well for you.

This is on a different topic. I see you were banded by Dr. Kuri in 05 and then re-banded in 06. Can you please share why you needed to be re-banded? I'm scheduled for Dr. Kuri next week. Thanks

It's a touchy subject, but I was wondering if anyone else has suffered from bloating and gas issues. I'm 11 months out from surgery (8/26/09) and for the past week or so no matter what i eat i seem to have nasty smelly gas and am very bloated. Any ideas of what I can do? It is rather embarassing having this problem. Seems to come on more at night. Help!

Fish Oil, Vit E for dry skin and hair? Is it helpful?
CrazyJaney replied to CrazyJaney's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
If I'm vain about anything, it's my hair. It's thick and I can stand to lose a little. But the lackluster/dryness of it is worrisome. I've been taking Biotin 5000 since before surgery. I'm starting to shed at 9 weeks. But, my nails are the strongest they've ever been. It definitly had a good effect on my nails. I've been through the shedding before with both my pregnancies. It comes back and I have plenty to spare but I'm just hoping it's not more severe. It's just "frizzy" and dry. It definitly wasn't dry after pregnancy. And my skin has never been dry. I'll look for the oil. My skin is soooo dry, especially in the looser areas. -
No, it's not mine but one of my good friends rang me last week to say she is getting married in June. Boy, what an incentive to lose as much as I can between now and then. So far I haven't done any exercise apart from work (I'm on my feet all day walking around). I went and ordered my treadmill yesterday and gets delivered Tuesday. I think I'll handcuff myself to it like the woman on A Current Affair. That'll be interesting to watch tonight. Also I'm starting back at Curves next week. Now my health is pretty much under control I can start going again - 4 operations in 5 months has kept me from doing much of anything. So, it'll be the big countdown to the big day and be interesting to see what happens between now and then. I'll let you all know what happens in the next 7 weeks with the exercise thing.

Well it's more than a week later but here I am to say that I've actually lost 1.5 lbs... not much by some people's standards but I'm very happy because I'm finally losing weight again. :blushing:

I had a question about sagging skin I'm 21 and 225 pounds and I'm having gastric sleeve in a little over a week and I wanted to know everyone's experience with their skin and if it started to sag or not or not . I was told that my skin probably wouldn't because I'm young and with weight training it should be find . ( mostly concerned with my arms )

Haven't eaten in three weeks
Lizzy Fu replied to Lizzy Fu's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you so much! I think you're right, it is my body, and I am doing this to get healthy! I don't know if it's that healthy to go 3 weeks with 1 grams of protein each day. I think I'm going to start drinking my shakes at least. You know, we trust our doctors. I just assume that she's telling me not to eat or a reason, you know. I assumed that having the shakes would somehow compromise my surgery, but it hasn't hurt anyone else. to have protein shakes. I'm so confused about her reasoning behind it. -
I started dieting about 3 weeks before surgery and I decided to keep it simple. I did 3 things every day: 1. Cut out the booze. 2. Eat off a side plate. 3. Replace 1 meal a day with a protein drink. It got me used to life post-op and I lost about 20lbs.

1 week post op, insatiable thirst, and 31lbs down since July 11th
iamdeannadixon posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So i had my RNY surgery last Friday, and was only down for the count for about 2 days (meaning didn't feel well and only did the required amount of moving/walking around) but since then, i've been on the GO! It's hard for me to stay put and I'm not sure if I should be staying in the office, but it drives me crazy. My biggest frustration post op is how thirsty i always am, and due to my stomach still being in the healing stage, I can't take large gulps of Water like my mind wants to!!! I went out dancing with friends last night, and was so thirsty and it took me forever to finish one cup of water.......matter of fact i never even finished it. So since i started the pre-op liquid diet, i've lost 20lbs, and since surgery last friday I have lost an additional 11 lbs. So within the last 3 weeks 31 lbs down and I'm really happy about that. But i want WatER WATER WATER!! -
At a stand still
BLERDgirl replied to gigglesforyou369's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
30lbs in 9 weeks sounds completely normal. By carbs do you mean all carbs or just breads/pasta/etc... I eat carbs, I just don't eat simple, overprocessed carbs. More importantly I make sure to meet all my Protein and Fluid goals. I keep a Water bottle by the bed and start my day off with a drink. I keep water bottles with my everywhere and drink all day long unless I am eating. -
Hello I'm 9 weeks out from surgery. I'm only 30lbs down and I can't seem to get over this hurdle. Do you stay completely away from carbs?

Ins Denial Reasons (Psych)
GipsyGirl replied to poslisa's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was denied the first time because I did not have a note from my psychologist stating that I am controlled well on all my meds. Then I got the letter within a week and it took them another week to approve me. -

Going back to work
BandtoSleevechick replied to italianmama82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i was banded on april 24th and went back to work on june 10th.. altho for me while i am a desk worker i also work in an enviroment that anything could happen and the dr wanted me completely healed before returning. that said i felt good after 2 weeks to start going out long periods of time,... (before it would just tire me out) -
I think 5 days is reasonable. I started back after that at 1/2 days for a week & did fairly well. But, was very tired when I got home. Do you have the option for shorter days that first week back?

Very EMOTIONAL Eve of My Sleeve
janinemaire replied to newnatalie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt the same way as you. I was so excited about the surgery but couldn't stop crying the weekend before the surgery and almost cancelled because i was so afraid. I wasn't afraid of something going wrong just afraid of the changing my life. I'm 4 weeks out and beside a few days early on I am so happy with my sleeve. Your emotions are all over the place but you will be fine. I 'll say a prayer for you, Janine -
Surgery is 2 weeks from today. Soo excited to begin my journey. Wish I could find a sponsor to talk to everyday. Someone to understand the emotions I am experiencing and will be experiencing.

October I sat and spoke to a woman who had gastric bypass, and I decided right then this is my next step to trying to get this weight off. By December 22 I had my surgery date set on 1-12-17. I found a great company called Belightweight who arranged all I need to have it done. Since it was out of my pocket I need affordable price With quality. I had RNY done for $8900. It was like being in a really nice hotel room. I was alone during my stay for surgery. Everything was there I needed and so friendly and nice staff to help with anything I needed. Surgery was two hours, and recovery was 45 min. Then they put me back into my room. First thing I said was can I get up! And I did, I felt like crap and a little nauseous but I pushed through and keep getting up for the first three hours after surgery. By the. Third hour my pain level was very low and it stayed that way the rest of my time there. I was ready to leave before 24 hours after surgery but stayed another night because my flight did not leave till then. Had a really great experience and am so glad I did not have to hump through hoops and wait long time. I am five days post opp and off pain med. I'm feeling good and am so hopeful for future. Right now I am taking day to day and breaking some old habits in this season so when I can eat food again it will be easer. My starting weight 294. I I'm going to wait to weigh in again until two weeks out. I hope you can find some encouragement to those who are have not had their surgery done yet. . My biggest advice is to get out of that bed asap after surgery. Even if it is only one or two steps. Best of luck to you all. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Has anyone ever gave in to food post op? Im only a week out and Im suppose to be only on liquid. I had a few tiny bites of things, chewed them up really well. Did I ruin everything you think? How can I fall off this wagon already!? Its only been a week! I think my problem is, i havent seen any weight loss prior to the nibbling. So, I got discouraged. Dang it! I feel like ive failed myself, my sleeve, my body. Urgh! * Misty *

hello :sad0: I went back to work on Monday, after having surgery the prior Thursday, and I was fine. Tired yes, but no pain or other issues. I also work at a desk most of the time however can get up and walk around anytime I needed to. I have always had fast recovery times tho; was on a cruise 3 weeks after a hysterectomy; back to work less than a week after lap gall bladder surgery. I was able to adjust my hours - go in later, leave early. I could have worked all day if I had to, but I had the option so took it. As far as what to tell people? Totally depends on you. I was going to be fairly cautious about telling and then decided to share it freely if the subject came up. My thoughts: I did not want to tell people that I lost the weight by portion control and exercise only. Mainly, I didn't want others to think I was any better than them - if they had tried and failed at dieting and exercise. I also think this is an amazing tool and I hope it is more recognized soon. There would be so many people who could benefit from it. That all said ... there could be a person or two that I run into that I won't tell. I will just let them think I did it myself. Probably something along the lines of revenge from something they did to me earlier in life! LOL Are you a coach? What do you coach? I have been coaching elementary and middle school volleyball for about 6 years. It is so amazing to see the older girls now on the high school team. Doesn't seem that long ago that they were afraid to even hit the ball : )
