How did you choose your doctor?

I hear you about the band not being permanent and got the band 3 years ago. In 3 days I will be doing revision to sleeve. I lost 25 lbs with the band gained 75lbs after many fills and unfills. It's all about finding what works best for you and make sure to sit down with your surgeon once you have one identified and understand all aspects. Good luck in your journey.

Gained most of my weight back

I had an endoscopy and it showed that my sleeve is twisted like a corkscrew, that's the best way I can describe it. There is a bit of a pouch on the end of it. (I don't like using the word pouch, but that's what the surgeon called it). The food is not emptying properly, it backs up. So it causes the Gerd and has caused slight sleeve distention (stretching).... I also had a barium swallow. So my surgeon does believe a revision is my best option. As far as I can find on sleeve Angulation it is a late term side effect.....oh and I have a nice size Hiatal Hernia... I was a very slow loser with the sleeve, however I did loose 50% of my excess weight (w/pre-op). I am just not sure even without getting pregnant if I would have made it to goal and I think 1200 cal would be my limit. I never thought it would be easy, but I also never thought it would be this hard. I never experienced a honeymoon phase. I lost weight month 1, but lost nothing in months 2 & 3. I was very active in the forum and had a difficult time processing why my journey seemed so hard the 1st 9 months. I am currently seeing NUT again and will start attending group for post surgery patients. We always see a lot if the great success stories here. I think those like me, stop participating because the outcome was not what was expected or never see goal. Even if you are doing everything right, by drs orders and then come to the forums the remarks can be discouraging. There is a huge percentage of people that obviously fail because they did not do what they were suppose to do. But trust, there are those of us that are out here that had a difficult time out the surgical suite. And yes, I got pregnant 8 months earlier than my surgeons recommended time frame....so I will slap my own hand for that.

Gained most of my weight back

I am in process of revision from sleeve to bypass. I have gerd, angulated sleeve and hiatal hernia.
  4. On this particular board there are people who are having a harder time with revision but on this site on while there are a ton of success stories. I think some surgeons can't make a properly shaped sleeve with a revision and some can. This is a question I would ask. I'm also worried about this and my surgeon only does 2 part surgeries specifically because of the issue with scar tissue after the removal. I had to wait several months and am going Tuesday for the sleeve. Will let you know!
  5. I had my revision done on June 24th and I am feeling great for the most part.I also had to get my gallbladder out so that was alittle more pain but not too bad.My question is-I also had to have a drainage tube put in,has anyone else had to do this an if so how long.Mine is in for a week getting it out on Wednesday, but I waswoindering if I am still draining what happens then? Has this happened to anyone in there procedure,Please share! Thank you

    Oh happy day!

Virgo66 yes, I had my band placed in 2008 and struggled with it to the point where I just ate junk to avoid getting sick. Even with the few complications I've had I don't regret the revision at all! I had my 6 week check up on Friday and i am at the lowest weight since I had my son in 2003.
  7. After reading all of these posts, I am wondering if getting the sleeve will be worth it! I lost about 50 with the band, and kept off 40. Will the sleeve make a difference? I have a 14cc band that has slipped. It's been filled almost to max capacity. No one ever told me that my band could cause difficulties with my sleeve! The entire point of the sleeve is to have restriction, correct? I'm paying cash for my revision surgery, and it's a lot of money to shell out if the sleeve will make no difference! I'm really bummed out, and I'm wondering if I should just get my band removed, and no sleeve on Wednesday. I only had band restriction for one year after band surgery in 2009. Please let there be more band to sleeve success stories out there!! Thank you, Lisa ????

Gained most of my weight back

mistysj could you pm me about this surgery revision and GERD? I have had to take a daily pill for intense heartburn since surgery nearly 5 years ago. Also, yeah it would be nice if that story of too few calories were true, but it isn't.
  10. I've never heard of the sleeve being bigger at the top because of the band. Has anyone else been told they would have a different shape if a revision? I asked my surgeon about that earlier this week when I had my post-op appointment. He said the same thing. He only took off about 70% instead of the normal 80% because of the scar tissue from the band at the top where the stomach meets the esophagus. He said he didn't wrap the sleeve as tightly around the measuring tube they use because he didn't want to run the risk of leaks around the esophagus/stomach meeting place and the scar tissue. He said it was safer that way.
  11. Hello, I have had my band for 5 years.. The only weight I ever lost was in the first year then I just had problems getting my band to the right tightness. I developed heart burn and acid reflux problems not to mention it has turned me bulimic. I am at my pre surgery weight and I have nothing left in my band yet everything seems to get stuck. Has anyone had the Lap band removed and did the sleeve? I just want this band out and I don't feel like bypass is for me. I just need some advice.. What were the pros and cons, have you had any problems? I want the good and the bad! TIA

    Why did you choose bypasd?

I chose this first after prompting from my surgeon and after more research it seemed like many people were having revision to rny and I did not want to go down that road. Sleeve is very new and the I would have liked to see more research to convince me.

    Why did you choose bypasd?

I was going to do the sleeve at first because it was less invasive but as you see here many people have revisions so since they are in there I felt I would just go all the way. I think also having the bypass part of it makes for maintaining easier as you will never have that length of intestine to absorb calories.
  16. Hey everyone, I am a September Sleever too. I had the Band. Just had it taken out two days ago. Can't wait to revise to the sleeve...have to do a 3 month supervised diet with my doctor's nutritionist for my insurance. I already got the clearances I need from a psychologist and therapist. I have an appointment in a week with my primary care to get a letter from him. I can't wait for September to be here!

    Self Conscious....

Hey All, My name is Rebecca and I am almost 29 and married from NJ. I have about 70-80 lbs to lose....I had my band for a year and just got it removed two days ago. I am doing a 3 month medically supervised diet then revising to the sleeve in September. I know I have to kick up my exercise regime once my surgery incisions heal up. I am a big fan of yoga but have found it to be hard since I have gained weight (At one point I was down to a size 8/10 but gained the weight back to a size 20). I have a gym membership but find it hard to motivate myself to go because I am very self conscious of the way I look. I need to get myself to go and walk on the treadmill or go to one of their classes and not care if people look at me. Does anyone have any advice as to how to get over the gym jitters? Thanks!
  19. I just want to step in and say to Frumpy, regardless of the weight gain, please take the GERD seriously. I am just a month out from revision to bypass that was necessary because of multiple ulcers and inflammation that occurred despite me taking nexium since my surgery in 2013 and never actually feeling heartburn. We don't have much stomach left after sleeve and we can't afford for GERD to damage it. Gastric bypass makes GERD practically impossible because the bile duct is in a different part of the system from the esophagus and stomach after the bypass. I'm not saying you need bypass but you need to be monitoring the situation with your doctor.
  20. Please understand that every surgeon is different and every surgeon's plan is different. I did not have a liquid pre-op diet. I had a low carb, 1000 calories a day diet of just lean Proteins and non-starchy veggies for 3 weeks. My surgeon has been doing bariatric surgery for years, has a ton of them under his belt, and is part of a Bariatric Center of Excellence. I had a revision from band to sleeve which he says is different from straight sleeve too in what you will feel with restriction and what you will be able to eat to start with. I would advise your husband to follow what his surgeon says. Ok, strange. On my screen all of the quotes ....like when you quote someone. ..have my photo in them. For a min I was like....wait...I never said that.

    Why did you choose bypasd?

I chose the sleeve because that's the only option I have. My doctor only does the band or sleeve. I have heard to many bad about the band. I got this app and looked at all these threads and alot of people have really good results with the sleeve. I originally wanted bypass as I would like to lose 140 pounds but I am gonna continue with the sleeve and if in the future I could get it revised to the bypass. Alot of people choose the sleeve because it's not messing with your intestines and such but I have seen so many good from both sleeve and bypass

    Surgeon Recommendations for NY/NJ area

I am using Dr. Strain at Englewood Hospital in Englewood, NJ. He is at a Bariatric Center of Excellence. He works with two other surgeons, Dr. Ibrahim and Dr. Morales. Dr. Morales just took out my Lap Band yesterday. She was great and Dr. Strain will be doing my Revision in September, he is great too. They also have a nutritionist right in the office (which is located on Engle St.) Their website is www.bergenlap.com
  23. Hi Everybody! My name is Rebecca and I am almost 29, married, and from NJ. I have about 70-80lbs to lose....I just got my band removed yesterday. I had it for a year and it gave me nothing but trouble...not being able to keep solids down, throwing up 2-3 times a day, only losing 15 lbs, etc. I am set to get the sleeve in September. I have to do a medically supervised diet for 3 months so my insurance will cover everything. I have already got clearances from a psychologist and a therapist so I've started taking the necessary steps for preparing for my revision in September. I am nervous about spending the next couple of months dieting since I will have no "aid" to help me and I was always a binge eater. I also know I will really need to incorporate exercise into my normal routine. I am a big fan of yoga and meditation and try to go at least 1-2X a week to the local studio. I would LOVE some friends or a buddy/mentor to talk to as I continue this journey. If anyone wants to talk, feel free to message me or email me at rebeccaabrooks86@hotmail.com
  24. Hey All- Just got my Band out yesterday. Had it for a year and it gave me nothing but trouble. Will be revising to the sleeve in September. I need to do a 3 month medically supervised weight loss program with a nutritionist for my insurance. I've already got two of my medical clearances (from the psychologist and a therapist) for the sleeve so I am ahead of the game. Just in a good deal of pain right now from the band removal. I am almost 29, married, and from NJ. I have about 70 lbs to lose. I am nervous about the next 3 months as I can already feel my pre-surgical hunger raising its ugly head. I know I will have to give exercising a fair go. I'd love a buddy or mentor who has gone or who is going through the same thing!!!! Hope to hear from you soon!!!
