I had my surgery early Friday and came home yesterday afternoon. I am sipping like crazy and get a gurgly tight feeling after each swallow. I think all I got in yesterday was 6 oz. Today I am going to try some yogurt and ice pops. Not too much pain gas, just where the large incision is with my drain. I will have that until Wed when Isee my doc.

Okay I will try to be constructive. Many bandsters cannot eat dry solids first thing in the morning. In fact some don't eat breakfast for several hours after waking. If you wake up starving I would recommend maybe a protein shake or Greek yogurt or cottage cheese. I would not recommend chicken or turkey.

I was banded December 10th and figured this out. The IV antibiotics I was given in the hospital killed not only the bad bacteria in my intestines, but also the good ones. Thus I exprienced lots of monster sounds in my belly. Since I was on clear and Water consistancy liquids, I went searching for something with some active cultures that I could have. I found "Good Belly" which is a juice with active cultures, in the yogurt department of the grocery store. Within a day all those monsters were gone and my bowels were settled. I spoke to the doctor about drinking it and he gave his blessings. He also said unsweetened Kifer would have worked, though at the time I didn't want to do that because Kifer is thicker than water. Just a tidbit, hope it helps someone. Best of luck in your upcoming surgeries. Fran

I was going to suggest tuna with light mayo and chopped up apples in it. Very yummy on a piece of wheat toast. vanilla Greek yogurt with sliced strawberries, peach or banana in it. Tortilla or pita "pizza". Top it with tomato sauce, sliced onion or other veggies plus cooked ground turkey. You can put light mozzarella on top but I usually skip the cheese. Throw in oven on 375 for 10 mins and you're good to go. I make a few a week and save for quick lunches or dinner. Scrambled egg beaters with black Beans and salsa on top. You can put it in a small wheat tortilla. Crunchy Peanut Butter on a wheat flax pita. You can put sliced banana on top if you want. I recommend Joseph's. Healthiest pitas/tortilla brand I can find. As you can tell its a staple for me. LOL

Hi Lori, I think we are all scared of failure, at certain times. Before having the surgery I wondered if I should just try again to lose weight on my own, if I would fail with the band, etc. I went through with it, had some quick success and then it slowed down. I started walking on the treadmill a couple weeks after surgery. At first I was winded walking 1.5 miles an hour, and now I'm walking a lot faster and have incorporated weights into my exercise. I found some high Protein things I really like (almonds, salmon, hummus, cottage cheese, greek yogurt used in dips or in place of sour cream--TONS of protein!). My weight loss has picked up recently and I am feeling great. I was (am) a grazer, so I am more successful when I can keep myself busy. Attitude is the biggest part of it for me though, even when I was stuck at 20 lbs. lost, I still was positive that it was 20 lbs. no longer on my body. I don't beat myself up if I want to have a Girl Scout cookie or have ice cream with my daughter. The lap band does help there, I don't need a lot of any food, so I am able to have 1 cookie or a little bit of ice cream. It does curb your appetite, especially when you eat good things that are high in protein. But I DO have to make an effort to have good things, most of the time. It's scary, alright! I'm even a little scared to change so much. But I'm doing it.

Hi Snuffy, I am not disagreeing with the symptoms you talk about - I certainly did feel them, but at what cost? I couldn't drink dairy, eat more than one small piece of certain fruits a day, couldn't eat carrots or many other vegetables and had to limit my vegetables to stay under 20 grams a day. There was no bread, Pasta, rice or potatoes in my diet. I also had very bad breath  I would argue that Atkins is not a successful long term weight loss tool, although it certainly does great short term. How many people do you know who have kept the weight off? If the low carb lifestyle was so sustainable, why does anyone eat carbs and why do we have morbid obesity and the need for WLS? I don't mean to sound anti low carb, I am just saying beware of what the pros and cons are and what you are prepared to do to take the weight off and keep it off. I know lots of people on this forum are going low carb and I realize that it is incredibly important to get enough Protein in your diet, but I also think we took the drastic step of WLS to change our lives permanently and to build healthy lifestyles that are forever sustainable, particularly when we reach goal. I did a quick search on the internet and came up with the carb counts of foods that are all considered healthy in any world: 1 c. skim milk = 12 carbs 1/2 c 1% cottage cheese = 4 carbs 1/2 cup non fat yogurt = 9 carbs 1 c cauliflower (raw) - 5.3 carbs 1 c. broccoli = 5.84 carbs 1 cup carrots = 12.26 carbs 1 cup squash = 5.25 carbs 1 tomato = 5.84 carbs 1 medium apple = 19.06 carbs 1 banana (med) = 27 carbs 1 wedge of melon = 8.32 carbs 1 cup raspberries = 14.69 carbs 1 cup strawberries = 11.67 carbs To me, it is unacceptable (and not promoting healthy eating) that I can have a cup of skim milk and 1 cup of vegetables a day (but no fruit) to stay under 20 grams of carbs. Or I can have 1 piece of fruit and maybe a cup of vegetables (if I stick to melon), but no dairy to stay under 20 carbs.

I know that I can have a little of all those things. But there are other HEALTHY options I can have that would make more sense to eat. I'm not saying I won't have some pumpkin pie, but all she talked about was the fattening stuff. I can't have soda so hot chocolate was her replacement? Tea works well. I can't have prime rib so how about some pie? Au jus mixed with some mashed potatoes would be a better choice I think. Since you can't have the healthy yummy stuff, we'll make more pie options so you can have variety. It just seems like the healthy idea I'm going for flies right past her. I explained Soup and mashed and pureed and yogurt, and such and she says "oh great, sugary bad for you stuff." When her daughter was told by the Air Force that she couldn't gain any weight in the next 6 mos or she would have too high of a BMI for basic training, she went and bought all kinds of veggies and looked for low-fat, high-taste, low-carb, high excitement options. She told me about all kinds of great recipies she picked out for HER. She gets it for HER! She talked about replacing high cal Desserts with delish fruit options for HER. For me, candied yams, pie, and hot chocolate. I'll get over it. I just needed to vent. Thanks for listening. I'll not kill her. My skinny me will be all the justification I need. And despite her, I'll have a Merry Christmas!!! Steph

My secret is the band. I have pretty good restriction right now so I am not eating really big portions. .75 to 1.5 cups of food max at each meal. An average day for me consist of a protien shake for Breakfast and either a special fibre muffin we make at our house, or a yogurt or nothing else depending on what we have around. lunch is after my workout and usually some left overs or a large Wendy's chili if I dont have any leftovers. dinner is what ever my wife is having and it really varies, sometimes Pasta or a chicken dish, hamburger. I dont eat fish or seafood. I dont really count calories, I just check from time to time to make sure that I am not eating too much. I spend 50 minutes at 85% maximum heart rate at least 4 days a week which I think is the big part of the secret. I know from my past weight loss attemps that working out is the key for me. I dont know if that will be much help, but from what I am calculating I am eating about 1500-1700 cal per day, and I burn about 900 at each work out. I am a pretty large framed muscular guy under this layer of fat, so I think that helps with burning off those calories. My BMR is around 2500 cal/day. If you have any questions let me know. Andrew

You are less than a week out from surgery. At this point just do your best. You are still healing and depending on how tight you feel, you may not hit your goal everyday. For my mushy foods I was only allowed soft Proteins which included yogurt, cottage cheese, refried Beans, tuna, sliced lunch meat, other cheeses. So the Protein was not too hard to get in. Enjoy!

You can have Protein with just about everything you eat right now, Nofat greek strained yogurt has 23G per 6oz. if you blend this with whey protein isolite which is another 25-30G per serving, you can get all the protein you need in just a couple of your many meals each day. I would also suggest not knowing all your particulars that 60-70G is very light, especially if you are working out with weights at all. I would encourage you to maybe double that, But check with your nutritionist first. Keep up the good fight.

Newbie has question about carbs and sugar
lucyb replied to citygirl4616's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am just 2 days post-op and I am having a problem. Whenever I try to eat anything other than water, broth or juice, (ie: sugar free jello, low fat lite yogurt), my face turns bright red and gets hot and I get palpitations. What's up with that? Is this normal? Is it because my surgeon also repaired a hiatal hernia during the procedure? I was thinking that it might be related to the dump syndrome thing, but reading here it seems like it's not that. Am I trying the jello and yogurt too soon? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks. -
Morning all! Well this time last week I'd just got weighed for the last time on my home scales before setting to be banded and one week later I'm happy to report 12lb gone! The pain has almost gone, just a twinge if I get up too quick. Having trouble getting enough calories in cos I feel constantly full Yesterday I had About 250 ml yogurt 300ml Soup 150 ml yogurt 200ml apple juice 1 litre Water 2 cups of tea every time I eat is an effort. I eat cos I have to not cos I want to. I know I've now got to get more calories in or I'll be poorly Was thinking maybe a milky decaf coffee or 2 a day Work tomorrow  Amanda xx

I was banded back in Sept 2013. After about 4 fills, I thought I was finally in the "green zone". I ate my measured 3 meals a day with no problems eating whatever I wanted, being sure to measure out my Protein, veggies, carbs. I would have a morning snack of almonds and an evening snack of my plain yogurt with almond butter and sweetener. But then I started eating a little more, not staying full as long. When I went back to my Surgeon the 1st of April and told him I wanted another adjustment, he had no problem with it, but did warn me that some people get to the point where they do get a fill, but wished they hadn't and may be harder for them to eat then they are accustomed to. Well, let me tell you, he hit the nail on the head!! Since that last fill, I have come to understand very clearly what pb and sliming means, not to mention all the times I have had to throw up just to get relief or almost not making it to the bathroom - at home, in restaurants and in the car, you name it. I do not want to get any unfill because I know what I am doing wrong and that the band is doing what it should. I know when I take small bites, chew my food at least 20-30 times each bite, take it slow an don't drink 20 mins before or after a meal I am fine. But the minute I try to eat too fast or take too big of bites (which has been my main problem) the band does it's job. I have forgotten the basics and have gone back to them. I Finally Understand my Lapband

I started eating berries and bananas pureed in my Protein shakes pretty early on - maybe the second week out. I've been eating (whole) berries on my yogurt since I was first moved from the pureed to soft food stage at four weeks out. I wasn't allowed to eat raw vegetables until month three. Lettuce still bothers me. I know some people have trouble with fruit with skins, too (I haven't tried those yet)

moonlitestarbrite replied to moonlitestarbrite's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yogurt's easy! pour into jar with he culture, keepwarm for 8-12 hours. done! strain for another day if you are making greek yogurt. pretty darn easy. i love raw veggies, when can one xpect to be able to eat them post op? -
Wow, I didn't get yogurt until a week out! Looks like you're doing great. I'm sure they're pumping you full of IV fluids, which will help make up for lower fluid intake the first few days. Welcome to the other side!

Hi I'm 5 days post op and able to move to full liquid today. I had a Protein shake and it's made me feel really full and a little sick. All I want is real food. Do you think I can have refried Beans yet? Or do I need to wait till puréed stage? Should I just stick to Soup and pudding and yogurt till the next phase? I feel like refried beans are same consistency as pudding so is that ok? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Am I the only one with Diarrhea?
Clementine Sky replied to EclecticWonder's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I unfortunately expereinced that for about three and a half weeks. I have PCOS and I think mine was due to hormonal flucuation issues. The problems began on day 1 of my first TOM post surgery and persisted up until the second TOM. I tried variations in my diet and nothing really alleviated the problem. I didn't come close to meeting my Protein and Water goals during that time and could not tolerate any Vitamins, but the priority really shifted to just finding foods I could eat without causing huge stomach upset. Anything with too much liquid caused a problem. I'd wake up three to four times a night to go to the bathroom, and during the day had to run there after I ate or drank anything. I was really worried about becoming severely dehydrated. I began drinking Pedialyte (which tastes vile) during the week when it was the worst. I sipped Gatorade, too. It's not a very healthy drink if you're not a serious athlete completing a workout, but at the time it was what my body was receptive to having and it helped me to get some calories and electrolytes in. For me eating fruit with a higher water content, like watermelon, was a way of getting some hydration in along with actual food. I stopped with the Protein shakes and started having more soft solids like mashed potatoes mixed with green Beans. I wasn't getting in that many calories or fat a day and my weight loss definitely stalled, but that was a secondary issue. My stomach problems were dominating my life for a while, but I felt confident they would eventually subside and they did. I can eat normally now. Hallelujah! I don't have ready to drink protein shakes anymore, but I make smoothies using plain Greek or Bulgarian yogurt, a scoop of Protein powder, a bit of berries, and some kale every morning for Breakfast to get me started. I think the Probiotics from the yogurt and from the supplement I take helps soothe my stomach. -
I haven't read through the thread so please forgive any duplicates. These are fast foods I've eaten since banding. Chipotle - usually eat there at least once a week. I get the chicken bol, no rice, extra black Beans with hot salsa and sour cream depending on what else I've eaten during the day, and what time of day it is. The bol is at least 2 meals for me, sometimes 3, and I always throw some away. McDonald's - fruit 'n yogurt parfait (it's made with lowfat yogurt) Taco Bell - pintos 'n cheese, spicy chicken taco (I eat the meat only), side nachos. Subway - I've been there three times. Both times I've gotten the "mini sub". Once I ate the bread, once I just ate the tuna off of it. And once I just had them put the tuna on a plate. Schlotzsky's - Thai Chicken pizza. 4 slices = 4 meals. Pizza Hut - chicken wings in either "Flamethrower" or "Garlic Parmesan". That may actually be all the fast food I've had since surgery. And don't get me wrong, many of the things I've listed are things I've eaten once or twice since surgery, except for the Chipotle.

This Friday July 20th I start my pre-op diet but it's not an all liquid one. I can eat yogurt and cottage cheese and lean meats and of course protein shakes. Is there any advice that any of you can give me to get me through these next 2 weeks.
