    Slow weight loss

there's your problem - you're believing what you read online. Just don't. NO ONE loses 5-15 lbs a week from weight loss surgery. People who are on shows like "My 600 lb Life" might lose somewhere at the lower end of that range, but even THEY aren't going to lose 15 lbs a week. the average WLS patient (and I am NOT talking people who start out at 600+ lbs, like on those shows) loses somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month - and then it drops to about 10 lbs a month (give or take) after that. And for lower BMI patients, it'll be even lower than that. Yes - you will find people here and there who do not start out at over 600 lbs who might drop 30 lbs the first month, but they are outliers. And NO ONE loses 15 lbs a week (OK - maybe the very first week when most of that is water weight - but after that, no. It just doesn't happen). I started out at almost 400 lbs and lost 16 lbs the first month. 12 lbs the second. And then around 10 lbs, give or take, for the next six months or so. And I lost every molecule of my excess weight - over 200 lbs. You are doing fine. Readjust your expectations a bit. If you are following your program, and you're seeing a general downward trend, you're good. your rate of weight loss is fine and perfectly normal.

    Slow weight loss

It's really hard to comment on your weight loss without knowing your start weight and height. 21lbs in five weeks sounds pretty good to me though given you lost 27lb pound pre-op. More you lose in pre-op the less likely you are to lose a lot in the immediate post op stages, however, over time weight loss will average out.
  3. I’m just under 5 weeks post op, and feeling very defeated. I’m just now starting to go into solid foods, soft solid foods though, and I have days where I can’t stomach much at all, but my weight loss is very slow. In total, including the pre-op diet I’ve lost 48lbs which is great, but around 27lb was from the pre-op diet. I read somewhere online that the average per week lost after gastric bypass was between 5-15lbs, and I’m definitely not getting anywhere near that, but then 15lb a week does sound crazy to me. It’s disheartening that I lost so much before surgery, but since surgery I feel like it’s been much slower, even though I can’t be getting any more than 800kcals a day, most days much less. Has anybody else experienced slow weight loss this early? Did it speed up? Was there anything you found helped?

    How many calories a day?

What Arabesque and HopScotch said - Each program and person will vary (sometimes GREATLY). If you're losing weight and your nutritionist is happy, then you;re doing great!

HW: 305 lbs SW: 295 lbs CW: 266 lbs (6 weeks po) 😁 GW: 140 lbs Personally I am looking forward to the onederland of kg’s: getting to double digits!! So that’s 218 lbs/99 kg.. my husband promised to take me to Disneyland (first time!) to Celebrate when I get there 💕💕!!
  6. So ive read over and over and over how Genepro protein powder is lieing about having 30 grams of protein per serving and how it cant have 30 grams of protein in it if it only has 58 calories in it cuz protein has 4 calories per gram and on and on and on and yadda yadda yadda! UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU READ!!!!!! They are saying that their serving size gives you THE EQUIVALENT AMOUNT OF PROTEIN THAT WILL BE ABSORBED BY YOUR BODY AS IN A 30 GRAM SCOOP OF WHEY PROTEIN!!!!!!!!!! 1 tblspn of Genepro 2 will give you the same protein blood level (actual absorbed protein into your body/blood) count as a 30 gram scoop of whey protein because whey protein has a very low rate of absorption by the human body!!!!!! I agree the label can be a bit tough to understand unless you read what it says EXACTLY! You will see the 30 gram statement followed by ** and when you go down to what ** means/relates too, its the clinical study that showed just what ive stated above...that 1 tablespoon of Genepro 2 will give your body the same amount of ABSORBED PROTEIN AS 30 GRAMS OF WHEY PROTEIN! Whey protein has a very low rate of absorption...approx 30-45% MAX absorption rate with most being around the 30-35% which means a scoop of whey protein that contains 30 grams of protein gives you about 10-12 grams of protein that is actually absorbed by the body. 1 tablespoon of GENEPRO 2 gives you approx 10-12 grams of protein absorbed by the body! Clinical study proved that 1 Tablespoon of GENEPRO 2 would give you the same amount of ABSORBED PROTEIN as a scoop of whey protein containing 30 grams of protein! GOT IT???? LOL! Thats laymens terms of course but i think thats what is need here and it needed to be repeated a few times for normal folks to grasp! LOL! AGAIN...BOTTOM LINE LAYMENS TERMS...1 TABLESPOON OF GENEPRO2 GIVES YOU THE SAME AMOUNT OF PROTEIN ABSORBED BY YOUR BODY AS A SCOOP OF WHEY PROTEIN CONTAINING 30 GRAMS OF PROTEIN. Genepro2 has a very high absorption rate...so consider a scoop of Genepro2 will get you approx 10-15 grams of protein absorbed by your body! ABSORBED BY YOUR BODY IS THE IMPORTANT FACT/NUMBER ETC AS WHATS NOT ABSORBED DOESNT DO YOU ANY GOOD! Some vitamins are the same way, examples being D, magnesium and others...to get 50 mgs ABSORBED BY YOUR BODY YOU HAVE TO TAKE 5 TIMES MORE/250 MGS SINCE ABSORPTION RATE IS SO POOR. I hope this helps and remember that 1 serving of the GENEPRO2 will get you about 10-15 grams of protein absorbed by the body. If you need to get an extra 75 grams of protein above what you will eat in your food then you will need to take 5-7 scoops/serving sizes. FOR BEST RESULTS AS FAR AS TASTE OR CHEMICAL SMELL GOES...DO NOT HEAT UP PROTEIN AT ALL! MIX IT COLD WITH SOMETHING AND POUND IT DOWN QUICKLY! I have always lifted weights and worked out seriously and have learned over the years how much my body can absorb of any given protein product. Your body will only absorb its max amount of protein and then it will come out your rear end! We have always tought other people that were lifting weights and taking supplements to gain lean muscle mass to find that max point with which ever protein product you are using and then back down from there. Work your way up to max rate when your body will get rid of excess and then slowly back down servings until you hit that happy point. GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL!

    How many calories a day?

There are so many plans with different expectations & requirements. As @Hop_Scotch said if you’re following your plan all is good. My plan didn’t have a caloric goal only portion size. If yours doesn’t either & you would feel more comfortable with one, ask your surgeon & dietician for some guidelines. I used to check my calories randomly for my own interest. I had a low calories intake - only about 900 calories by goal. I consume about 1200/1300 (3 meals & 3 or 4 snacks) to maintain my weight as it is now at almost 2 1/2yrs (am in my mid 50s, small frame, not overly active). If I was more active I’d eat more calorie dense food. Good luck.

    Liquid diet

The first week is always difficult on the all shake diet (my surgeon called it hell week) because you are breaking a lot of your addictions & dependencies (sugar, carbs, caffeine, etc.). Any weakness, headaches, etc. you may feel in hell week are the withdrawal symptoms. The second week is always easier. The shakes will start the ketosis process, burning your excess stored fat for the additional energy your body needs to function & start the weight loss. Slowly introducing the shakes a week earlier sounds like a way that may ease the transition. You pee out the fluid they pump you with in a couple of days. Doubt they would prescribe a diuretic unless the fluid was causing other health complications. But of course we’re all different & our surgeons have different post surgical plans. Those first 24hrs I would have been glad not to have to pee any more than I did. Plus they kept me on IV fluids for 24hrs so to get up & pee, I had to buzz a nurse to get them to disconnect the IV then steer the stand to the bathroom. Good luck.

    How many calories a day?

Are you following your post op guidelines with regards to food volumes/intake? Are you losing weight? If yes to both of these, I can't see how you are eating too much. If would be helpful (but if you choose not to that is fine)if you filled in your profile it gives context to questions and helps members in tailoring their responses.

    I've gained weight...

I don't lift heavy weights. I lift manageable weights with high repetitions until failure. Whatever muscle group I'm working, I give it 48hrs before I work that muscle group again.

    First All Inclusive vacation

I just spent 2 weeks at Walt Disney World, go home tomorrow. I’m only 4 months out, so the restriction definitely kept things in check. But I did try various things while still focusing on protein. Some foods “sit” heavy, but I did not have any reactions overall to the different foods. I’m sure the scale will show an increase Monday, water weight due to eating carbs & the humidity. But, I’m hoping for a drop the following week because I did a tonne of walking that more than counteracted the food I ate. (I still tracked best I could - mainly to keep on top of protein intake)

    I've gained weight...

I had only one problem area with loose skin with all my weight loss. The lower abdomen area and it's not going anywhere unless I have surgery to remove it.

Water is predominately absorbed in your intestines not your tummy. Because water is absorbed not digested like food, you don’t have the same possible issues with malabsorption of nutrients from poorly digested foods after weight loss surgery. The sipping continuously vs gulping down glassful at a time is a new mind set. Plus at the early stages, you can be a little wary to drink in case you feel discomfort or your not really hungry & you don’t feel like drinking either. And the taste of water can be a little blah or it can feel almost heavy to drink. Remember, all fluids count: your shakes, broths, tea, etc. as well as water. We should always have been drinking 64ounces or 2litres of water a day but many didn’t so suddenly having to do so can be challenging. @Lisa LoVuolo could you update your profile with your surgery date, height, starting weight, type of surgery, etc. it helps others to offer more appropriate help & suggestions if we know how far a long you are, your type of surgery, etc.

Great job! Your such a inspiration! I need to find that motivation. I am all about being active and love anything cardio, but weights, even the 5lb ones are dreadful lol!

    I've gained weight...

...muscle weight that is. I'm in the gym 6 days a week. I decided to bulk up because wasn't happy with being slim and slender. I went from 175 to 205 and haven't went up in clothing size. This is the same shirt in both pictures. I love filling out my shirts now..lol.

I don’t think it’s from the weight loss but I got dehydrated quick right after my surgery. I had to go back to the hospital as an out patient to get fluids one time just a few days out.

Yes, but it's not from the weight loss, it's usually directly after surgery when we are getting used to our new plumbing. It can be hard to get enough liquid if you're having to take tiny little sips. Try to make sure you are meeting your surgeon's fluid intake (and remember that it's not just water, any liquid including Jell-O counts). You might have to carry a bottle of water and remind yourself to take sips.

  23. When you say you regret it, what do you mean? Do you have nausea or vomiting? Diarrhea? Or emotional symptoms like anxiety that you will gain weight, or physical symptoms like shakiness?

    NSV: Blood pressure medication

I was also able to get off my blood pressure medication. I was taking 50mg of Metoprolol daily for the past 20+ years. About two months in, I had lost so much weight that my blood pressure and heart rate were getting so low that I'd be dizzy upon standing. My blood pressure is now normally in the 115/65-70 range.

Cranky, and irritable with my spouse

I'm going through a version of this with my "better half"--he was originally planning to have the same surgery after we get married next year and he can be on my much-better insurance. After seeing what I've gone through the last 3 weeks, he has decided it's not for him. He is 6' tall and about 290, and even after me losing 32 pounds already my BMI is still 2 points higher than his. He has a LOT less weight to lose to be comfortable with himself (he has a very broad build and quite a bit of muscle, and feels he would look best around 230) than I do, and I keep telling him that once my diet expands to a point where I can cook for both of us again, the weight will likely come off on its own because of the reduced portion sizes. I've been cranky a lot lately because I can't seem to get anything down--I'm on week 2 of purees and I am so sick of yogurt and shakes, and try as I might unless I'm really forcing myself to eat I seem to keep ending up falling short of my protein goals and am eating way too few calories. He's been very patient with me but anyone would be frustrated by that.
