  1. Hi all! August 3rd here. Having a lot of anxiety and not sleeping throughout the night. Lots of strange "surgery" dreams also. LOL! I'm so weird. I Don't start my pre-op diet for a couple of weeks yet, but I have to admit my eating habits have been terrible, I guess it's my way of saying goodbye to a lot of the foods I know that I won't be able to eat again (or at least not for a long time.) I am revising from the Lap Band so this isn't my first rodeo. I just want this band out and want to get through the recovery period. Already stocked up on my pre-op diet supplies (SF Jello, broth, Protein powder, tea.) If I remember correctly, that is one of the hardest things I ever had to do was the pre-op diet. Look forward to meeting some new friends on here. Feel free to introduce yourself. We are all in this together!

    Band slippage

Oh yes if you can be revised to a sleeve. It is so worth it. Had my revision May 28 th. I had my band for 11 years. You have none of the misery that you have with the band. No more sliming, vomiting, stuck food. After my band slipped they took all the saline out. I regained 87 lbs. it took me a year before I could get my revision because we were in the middle of a move and I had to find a new surgeon and then jump through all the insurance hoops. I wish I could have done it sooner is my only regret. I am 4 weeks post op and down 21 lbs.

    Band slippage

IF I'd have had that many problems, I'd be looking to revise as well. Surgeons included!
  4. Hi! I'm very new, and this is my first post. In researching for VSG, I discovered the other day that my insurer, Blue Shield (not BCBS) has a new set of requirements starting today. Until today, they required 6 months of nutrition visits etc. Starting today, they appear to be much more flexible. Instead of the list of requirements, they have the following paragraph: "Patients should have documented failure to respond to conservative measures for weight reduction prior to consideration of bariatric surgery, and these attempts should be reviewed by the practitioner prior to seeking approval for the surgical procedure (e.g., Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Optifast, MediFast). The timing, intensity and duration of the preoperative timeframe should be individualized and left to the discretion of the patient and provider. However, given the elective and life changing nature of these procedures, and the necessity of proper education and instruction in the lifestyle changes inherent in both the immediate and long term postoperative management, it is recommended that three months elapse between the initial bariatric consultation and the date of surgery." So, my question is, has this rolled out elsewhere? How has this affected you? Yesterday was my first meeting with the surgeon. He didn't even talk about time frame, other than saying the nutritionist has to sign off on me. The assistant, however, looked at this new wording (she had never seen it) and said, "Oh, now they require three months." I responded that I didn't think it said three months, that it was flexible with a recommendation of three months, and she said, "No, that's never how it works." Experiences? It's an issue for me because I'm a student with a long commute, and I will have to do surgery either before the semester starts Sept 8 (with enough time for some recovery), or after the semester ends December 20 or so. I was hoping to get a grant for an overseas language class in January, so this timing affects that -- the grant application has to be in long before a December surgery. Why am I holding onto my fat?

I went through something very similar. I lost about 100-120# (or thereabouts) but still had more to get to goal. My losses were grinding to a halt and I had to ask myself some tough questions. 1. Do I actually WANT to be slimmer? I had lost enough that I was much healthier, was able to move and do stuff comfortably but I had a nice matronly look about me. the remnants of the "fatsuit" made me feel safe and comfortable. The decision to really push and get to goal was a little like deciding to strip in public - it was very very unsettling to me. 2. I had let certian "healthy foods" become my new junk food. Quest bars are fine once a day, but when you start nibbling them like the new snickers bar... your losses will stall. I had to really decide to not use food that way anymore. Really. Not even healthy food. 3. I had to change up my workouts to give me a bit of extra "burn". I went to high intensity interval training and loved it. I decided to go for it and hit my goal of losing 150# 14 months from my revision. I found out that for me, the loss of the fatsuit gave me a great deal of angst. My biggest learning from all this was the deep understanding of how that "anxiety" has always contributed to regains in the past. My surgery was Dec 2011. I hit goal in Feb 2013. It is now almost first of july 2015 and i am still maintaining... and I am very aware of all this now. The angst over how I look (that being exposed thing) is pretty much gone now but it was harder then you might think...

    Any Regrets?

While I agree with your main point, i have some slightly different perspectives. one of the reasons i had a hard time maintaining with the lapband is I never got to goal! I am 3.5 years post revision to sleeve and maintenance isn't always easy. One of the very motivating things for me now is that I WANT to stay in single digit clothing sizes! I did the surgery for health, but my motivation for maintenance comes largely from feeling and looking normal size. With the band, I never got there so even though I was better off as a size 16 versus 24W it still never made me feel successful. one of the benefits of the sleeve and bypass is you lose enough weight, fast enough, to help with that "motivation". It made a big difference for me. According to what I have read, the rate/speed of loss is only slightly higher with the bypass. for most people, I am not sure the difference is really that significant. I don't really agree that there are big benefits to losing slower. I am not convinced your skin turns out better or any other side benefit. We lose at the rate we lose - not just surgery type, there are many other factors both obvious and mysterious.... Having said that, years down the road it makes absolutely no difference that it took me 14 months to get to goal versus some other number of months... It REALLY IS ABOUT MAINTENANCE. I could write that about 1,000 times and still not convey how critical it is to know that. As @@JamieLogical said most of us could lose weight reasonably well, we could just not keep it off. WLS is an effective maintenance tool but it is still a bear at times.

I had Ortiz do my band-to-sleeve revision on 4/27/15. Very good experience from start to finish.
  10. I initially went into this deadset on the sleeve. But halfway through the approval process I changed my mind and will be getting the bypass on 07/29. The main deciding factors for me included the GERD issue. I only have mild heartburn now, but when I do have it I am absolutely miserable. Yes, some people have this same malady and went on to have the sleeve and are perfectly fine now, with no problems in this regard. But there are also others who ended up having it get much worse post op. Some even suffer to the point that they chose to revise from sleeve to bypass. My intention, barring unforeseen complications, is to only have WLS once. The other deciding point for me was that I came to the conclusion that malabsorption might be of some benefit to me. I don't want to induce dumping of course, but the fear of it might well help me keep my sweet tooth in check. I need all the help I can get. And since I'm already on a long term daily regimen of Vitamins I'm not worried about staying on top of any Vitamin deficiency. Plus I will also work with my PC to ensure that I have regular lab work done to ensure I'm getting the job done. In the end the final choice is yours. Keep researching and talking to others and you'll eventually find the answer that is right for you.
  11. @@asauce413 Definitely do your research on this. I have seen way too many people go the sleeve route and have to revise to bypass because of the Gerd/reflux issue. I wanted sleeve surgery so badly that I was devastated when I was told that RNY was recommended vs. sleeve. I got a second opinion from my gastroenterologist who definitely supported the RNY. I read tons, got on sites like this one and began to understand the pros and cons of each surgery. For me, I wanted to go through this once and only once. RNY has been a huge blessing for me. No complications, down 111lbs in 8.5 months with 34 to go. RNY cured my Gerd, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and stage 3 kidney disease. Many surgeons will move forward with your sleeve surgery and certainly you can take medications to help you with it. You have to think about if that is what you really want knowing that the sleeve can make that condition much worse. Even people who have never had Gerd have gotten it with the sleeve. There is a reason that RNY is the gold standard for WLS and is recommended for people who suffer from Gerd. You have to make the decision for yourself, I am just suggesting you continue to research like crazy. Do a search on revisions from sleeve to bypass. I bet you find lots of info to help you on your research journey. Good luck to you!
  12. Hello everyone. I was sleeved on May 12 so I guess I'm about 6 weeks out. I've lost about 20 pounds so far. My family and I are on vacation on an all inclusive resort. I have not enjoyed a single meal yet. Its hard to explain but I just can't eat much at all and when i do est i dont enjoy it. But I guess that's what I paid $14000 for. Every meal the waiter comes to the table and say ohhh so you don't like your meal. I know Im rambling but will things get better? Will I eventually be able to eat a little bit more? My surgery weight was 205. I'm currently 184. I also had a band revision so my doc said he made me a little tighter. Your thoughts please?

I am having revision surgery with Dr. Halmi probably Sept time frame.
  14. I went in today & was told my band slipped... AGAIN (second time in 3.5 yrs). I'm tired of messing with this... Fills, deflates & surgical repairs. They deflated it completely & want me to have surgery asap to repair. Thinking of just revising it to a gastric sleeve instead. Anyone else have a suggestion or opinion on a revision? I meet w the surgeon next week so am doing some research. I'm down 57 lbs, and am afraid of gaining back if left untreated. Thanks in advance

    ????Any May Gastric Bypass peeps????

Where in Indiana are you from?I live in New Palestine just east of IndianapolisI live in Pendleton and work for Roche Diagnostics. I'm waiting on my appeal for revision to bypass to be overturned. What's your story? I originally had my band placed in 2008, I had some early success losing about 50 lbs but after the first two years I got tired of fighting it. I resorted to eating around it. For the next 4-5 years I did weight watchers and a bunch of other diets (blah) with some success but the weight always came back plus some. My last straw was I went into my PCP last December and my weight was up to 263 (only 20 lbs shy of my pre band weight). I called that day and made an appointment with my surgeon. We discussed options and the RNY seemed the way to go. I didn't have any trouble with insurance, after my 3 month supervised weight loss, they submitted on a Friday and I was approved on a Monday. Wow! Sounds sooooo familiar! Who did your bypass? My surgeon is Dr. Ditslear at Community North. I absolutely love him and the team. They did my band as well.
  16. I am 3 weeks out today. I already lost 20 lbs! The pain was not that bad. I was on a morphine pump and I had a revision from a lap band to gastric bypass. My awesome surgeon Dr. Chang said he did a lot of cutting! I went home on Wed. You will do great! The surgery and days after are just a blur to me now and well worth It!!!! Good luck!

    September sleevers?

I will be in TJ on Sept. 7th having surgery revision with the oh so handsome Dr. A It will be fun to follow a fellow September sleevers progress.
  21. Globe, I know you asked for a PM but there seems to be general interest so I will put it out there. GERD can cause cancer. If you are not controlling it with a PPI you need to be proactive. The sleeve increases the pressure inside your stomach causing stress on the valves at the top and bottom. Some of us seem to be able to handle it and others not. I was not only having GERD but bile reflux from my intestine back into my stomach. Bile is caustic like lye and reacts to stomach acid sort of like vinegar and baking soda. I had ulcers in my stomach and intestines. In addition if bile and stomach acid reflux into your esophagus you can get Barret's Esophagus which is a precursor to esophageal cancer. Not trying to scare you but just to be real. The RNY splits your stomach or sleeve into two parts. An upper part which connects to your esophagus and your small intestine about 100 cm down from the normal place, and a small part that connects to the common bile duct and then connects to your intestine. So the food and digestive juices don't mix until they get together in your small intestine (which is where digestion happens anyway) and reflux is basically impossible. My surgeon said that the part of my sleeve that he used for the bile part is only about 10 ml (2 tsp) and I am already close to my pre-revision capacity a month out. I've had no issues. Even my poop is kind of normal for the first time since my sleeve surgery. I know most of us chose the sleeve because we were dead set against the bypass but I am sure seeing a lot of sleeve to bypass revisions now because of GERD, both here and on Thinner Times. I hope the word gets out to pre-op folks so they can make more informed decisions.

    Oh happy day!

Sounds like you are doing great. My band come out on Wednesday and revising to MGB.
  23. The Candidate

    Not sure why

While I've also made a point of reading both positive and negative experiences, there was one recurring theme that was impossible to ignore, and pretty much cemented my decision to proceed. I don't have precise statistics but I'd bet that 99 percent, even those who had complications, regains, or revisions, have said that it was the best thing they'd ever done for themselves, and would do it again in a heartbeat. That's a strong positive that's pretty hard to ignore. I'll be having mine on 07/29 and I've no doubts or qualms about going through with it.
  24. Hi. Just read your post. I had RNY 2003. Started at 241 lbs. and got down to 133 within 18 mths. YAAYY!! Put by 66 lbs. HATED myself. But I'd been through too much (pd. cash, too!); too much money, effort, miles walked, lifted a ton of weights, swam till my skin was puckered. I screwed up my courage and went back to Dr. Yes, he let me try diet pills. No big help. Yes, I'm a grazer. But I wasn't ready to give up. Had UGI, endo. and found pouch and anastomosis was stretched; my fault. Still, he was willing to do a revision. Paid cash again; most insurance won't cover a revision. Am down to 150 +/- 10 lbs. I've learned to be happy with that. Still overeat; still graze; still have wrong foods but in smaller amounts. Get an opinion from another Dr; one you don't work for. Don't give up. You've invested too much. Good luck.
  25. I did have to wait six months but it was because I had what I think was a panic attack and it landed me in the hospital checking my heart. Dr Kelly wanted to wait six months as a precaution. He said he does do revision in one surgery but he did not want to chance that the band may have caused my chest pains. He said his job is to do surgery but his first job is making sure his patients are save. He us really awesome, even though I did not like that I had to wait.
