things i wish they would have told me...
Sarah Armstrong replied to glitterpockets's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a lot of pain when I woke up but with in a few days it was non-existent.Here was some things I wish I would have known: 1. Do not over stock kitchen. I got so much broth, Soups, Jello but I since I had absolutely no appetite I spent all of my liquid diet drinking Protein shakes and eating greek yogurt to get my daily protein goal. I have so much left over broth and jello in my kitchen now. 2. Your breath is gonna smell bad for a while. It gets horrible. 3. Your stomach with now talk to you after meals. Its so strange and sometimes embarrassing. I think it has to do with air that gets in to your stomach while eating. 4. Cut yourself some slack and hopefully the people around you will too. I got really depressed after surgery because it felt like I lost my best friend. I was irritable and emotional. Luckily I had lots of support who gave me the space and love I needed to adjust. 5. Focus on your own journey. I often fight the urge to compare my experience and weightloss with friends and people on forums but it will only drive you crazy. Good luck! -
That's why we're preaching Fairlife! It's ultra-filtered to remove sugars and lactose, and it packs 14g of protein and 1/3 of daily Calcium in ONE cup. For me, someone who can be sensitive to higher amounts of lactose, it's a godsend. Almond milk had more carbs and less protein for me. How you manage to find so much success as vegan is AMAZING. It's hard enough as a carnivore trying to cobble a decent diet together! Thanks but I'm vegetarian. It makes things easier because I do eat milk based products like yogurt and I also eat eggs. Those 2 items make it relatively easy for me. I hope to go vegan once I get to a normal BMI. I'm currently following a few vegan athletes for when I transition. I also have to eat as unprocessed as possible, because heavily processed foods trigger my allergies.

Hoping this works for you....remember you can add this to anything. Add it to your eggs, yogurt...etc. If you add it to hot...mix it with something first...it does better.

Pre vs post op diet...prepare yourself! (This is somewhat of a rant also)
shuga04 replied to MrsDixon's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Today is day 12 post op. I've had challenges with wanting savory food not just sweet protein shakes and broth or yogurt. I see my surgeon tomorrow, so I guess we will see how well I've been doing overall. -
Pre vs post op diet...prepare yourself! (This is somewhat of a rant also)
chopsitter replied to MrsDixon's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sorry you are having a hard time. First about the pre op diet. Not everyone is the same. I had a liquid diet for 2 weeks, no food whatsoever! Then 2 weeks clear/full liquids after surgery. I am 3 days shy of a month out. I am on real food, but only fish and eggs. I dont like cottage cheese or yogurt. Is it hard? YES! But this is where we need to retrain ourselves. I have cooked for my family since the pre op diet. At first it bothered me, not now. Yes there is hunger, but i choose to drink my water especially if I ate recently.I haven't had any problems as of yet, which is an amazing blessing, and shows no 2 people are alike. You kind of scare people who come here wanting helpful information. You have to take the good with the bad, as this is not an easy thing for anyone. I am looking long term, not dwelling in right now. If i'm having a hard day I just see what I did this for, to be healthy!! -
REGRET -doctor Changed goal weight

I agree, it is critical to reach your protein goal every day as soon as possible after surgery. As soon as I passed my leak test in the hospital they started giving me ProtiDiet liquid concentrates. Even on the clear liquid stage, which it sounds like you have passed, you need to be working on getting in your protein. For the full liquid phase it is easier because you have more sources: protein shakes, yogurt, etc. I would definitely revisit your program materials and give your NUT a call if you have any questions. Getting in enough protein helps with both healing and weight loss. -
What do you use to sort/organize your lunch kit?
LisaPunkinHead replied to theatrejo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ziplocks. They fit in my purse. I have the bento box thing with the fancy little boxes that go inside it. But seriously, I don't eat nearly enough food to warrant something like that, and it just gives me extra dishes to wash. 3 ounces of Protein, a Protein shake and maybe a Greek yogurt come with me to work. That's it. I keep it simple. -
8 weeks out, should I be able to eat 3 oz protein at a meal?

You should be getting in protein everyday. You won't start getting it from actual "food" sources until week 4 Week 1 was clear liquids so I got protein from Isopure protein drink Week 2 was full liquids so I got protein from protein shakes and Greek yogurt Weeks 3 was purées so I got protein from protein shakes and mixed in unflavored protein powder into thinks like mashed potatoes. Week 4 was soft foods so I got protein from things like eggs and soft chicken in addition to the sources noted above. Week 5 I started regular foods so I got protein from meat and protein smoothies here and there. Protein oatmeal balls, Greek yogurt, protein oatmeal. Gotta get creative! -
How Long Should It Take To Drink A Protein Shake?
_Kate_ replied to vinnyfan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only started back with Protein drinks on day 5/6 post op. Today I managed to drink 12 oz of milk and Protein powder, in 2 and a half hours for Breakfast, yesterday it was 4. I don't care it took that long, I am more concerned with getting the protein in. Along with yogurt at late lunch, I had and pea and ham Soup for dinner, my protein was 77 and for day 5 I am very happy with that. From the more knowledgeable here, am I doing anything wrong by not sticking to the 20 minute rule of eating at this stage? Kate -

How much did you lose the first month?
Dallyup2me replied to ashleyjunemitch's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I will be 1 month post op tomorrow. From the beginning of my 2 week pre-op diet to today I am down 51 lbs. I have stuck with the basics. EAS Protein shakes, Jello, Soups, Greek yogurt (yoplay 100 cal,) Those were helpful in getting the protein i needed. Good luck with your journey. Hope this helps -
Anyone have problems with Protein Powders?
jane13 replied to Rence's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have used both RTD and Protein mixes and haven't had any issues with bathroom trips. Did you mix fruit or juice with the protein mix? I was thinking too much sugar causing the urgent trip to the loo! I either mix with yogurt, Water or skim milk. I occasionally has put an ounce or so of juice for flavor (orange juice) to plain yogurt. -
Definitely go with the eating plan supplied by your doctor, he's in the best position to know your needs. But just because you CAN start puree foods, doesn't mean you have to. If you feel more comfortable, stay on liquids a few more days and just try a spoonful of puree food here and there to test your new tummy. My goto foods when I was on purees was refried Beans and Cream of Mushroom Soup. That's almost exclusively what I ate for about the 1st 2 months. Frankensleeve was very cranky and wouldn't tolerate anything else. You might also try yogurt and soft scrambled eggs, the make good puree foods.

I rarely drink cow's milk. On the rare occasions I need milk I drink unsweetened almond milk. Milk is low in protein and high in carbs. I do eat yogurt but prefer yogurt made from fat free milk. With yogurt I get the protein payoff to make it worth while.

Sorry about your back. That must have been awful to deal with so soon after surgery. How did you hurt it? I was wondering where you went off to. I'm glad to hear from you again. 22lbs lost in a month is an awesome achievement! I'm happy for you! The avocado is awesome in chicken salad. A tsp of plain Greek yogurt helps to moisten it a bit too. I've just gotten clearance for regular foods this week. Already discovered that beef, pork, and nuts do not agree with my new stomach. I am loving seafood and veggies tho. Feel super satisfied. Just been having a weird craving for fudgesicles. Doesn't help that my family has been indulging in them lately with it so hot outside. This craving is so weird since I did not like chocolate much before surgery and was not a big ice cream eater. Although I did crave them while pregnant. Gonna have to be sure that's not the case now. lol

Nonfat plain Greek yogurt and some sugar free Torani syrups to flavor it. Don't need to get too much of any one thing because you will only be having a couple tablespoons at a time of anything. I stocked up on sweet things, and then post-op found that I wanted more savory things. So I had a bunch of sugar free home made custard (which was really good except I just didn't want anything sweet) and chocolate pudding that never got eaten!

I'm one week out today. Nothing but clear liquids a couple protein shakes and a little jello. Today started "phase II" where I could add yogurt and cream soups(no potato or corn soups). I just fixed a bowl of cream of chicken soup. I was able to eat half of it with no problem. Should it have been that easy? I read about people using baby spoons, etc... I am terrified of overdoing and inadvertently sabotaging this. Is that an ok amount to be able to eat at this point?

That's why I posted. I've been trying for years, with some successes and some failures, but I've not been able to kick it for good. That's why I wanted to hear how those who were in my boat used WLS as a tool and combined it with other tools to beat the sugar monster. Every time I eat anything with sugar I get sick and have diarrhea within 15 mins of having eaten it. I avoid sugar for that reason. But I get my sugar/sweet fix with sugar free Popsicles and Greek yogurt. And if you will drink GNC total lean Protein shakes, they have lots of flavors and are really sweet. Take advantage of the first few months to kick that habit

Protein shakes..already made. Sugar free Popsicles, sugar free jello, bottled water, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, broth and sugar free applesauce.

Any August Sleevers?
sshellssea replied to DrewzWife's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is me tooBut I'm still closer to 500 calories and I feel like I'm gonna pass out idk what to eat tho You can eat fish/chicken/beef and vegetables, soups, salads, anything that is not empty in calories. Drink Crystal Light, tea, coffee, have some fruit, yogurt, nuts, sugar-free jello/pudding...there are many choices. My actual diet from the nutritionist says if I can chew it I can't have it haha and no dairy or caffeinated beverages. But I think I'll go to the store for some soup today thank youuuu -
I would find something else to eat. Cottage cheese is spoiled milk in my book and I can't stand it. I don't eat that or tuna which is cat food. Can you eat Dannon Light & Fit Greek yogurt instead? I really like the cherry flavored one.

Im on my 15th day post op, down 28 pounds, but this whole process has been really overwhelming, my preop diet stage also was done at the same time as me getting off two of my medications which im happy to be done with, but Ive been feeling like when I try to eat the recommended foods such as oatmeal and scrambled eggs, Protein shakes, etc. I tried the eggs today and they felt soooo uncomfortable and ten minutes of discomfort later they came right back up, I feel like when i eat anything aside from no sugar added applesauce or yogurt i can feel a heavy sitting feeling inside of me. I just want to know if this is nervous, ive been pretty scared to eat and barely eating anything. Im just nervous, also when I feel that heavy feeling I get the urge to want to throw the food up rather than sit there uncomfortable. Is this just me or does everyone experience this?!?!
