    October 2018 Sleevers

Thankfully nausea has subsided but I’m finding it so difficult to get my water or food down. It feels like everything is kind of sticking right behind my breastbone. It feels weird and every sip makes me burp. I’m also so tired!! I’ve been walking for 10 min every few hours. Just struggling and looking for advice.

    October 2018 Sleevers

Hi Freiabr. Glad you’re home! I had my surgery on 10/16. I had a drain they took out before I was discharged. I didn’t put any ointment on the incision. I did take the bandage off before I showered and then put a clean one on. My doctor said he didn’t want a wet bandage on the incision. Had the staples taken out a week later and you can barely tell there’s a scar there! Best of luck to you!

    November 2018 Sleevers!?!?

I'm planning on two full weeks after and see how I feel after that. My friend just had it done in September and took two weeks and she was still very exhausted and trying to get her meals on track. I'll be on a 10 pound weight restriction for a month, so if there is any heavy lifting at your work you either can't go back or can't do those activities for a while. My date is set for Nov 21. I had to lose 25 lbs and as of yesterday I'm down 57 since June!

Got my surgery done on 10/30, had some complications but was discharged yesterday 11/02. Do you guys put some antibacterial ointment on the drain incision? Also, do you take off the bandage before showering and put it a new one after?

@Alpaca55 I totally get what you're feeling. My surgery date was October 29 and I came home the 30th. I initially wanted to tell family/friends what I was doing and my husband and kids (ages 16 & 19) we're all good with it. But once I attempted to break the news to those outside my home, reactions weren't all that pleasant so after attempting to tell a couple additional family members I stopped telling people. I knew these changes were going to be hard on me so I actually signed myself up for therapy as well and had my first appointment yesterday. For the first little bit I will be going weekly until I get a handle on feeling so anxious and find a way to break off my emotional relationship with food. Good luck and I know we got this!

Hi October Sleevers! ... my surgery was 31/10 (sorry, from UK - we do everything the wrong way round! )... came home yesterday... feeling ok but already realising how much extra time I have on my hands not eating! lol I've had an Atkins shake today and will be making a broccoli and spinach soup with bone broth. I have a Nutribullet which should turn it into a smooth liquid for this stage of the diet plan. I thought I'd make enough to freeze some so I have some ready meals for the next couple of weeks. Am also going to make a green smoothie - like the one on Dr Vuong's YouTube (I love that guy!). I'll also freeze them in pots for something nutritious and easy to get to. I've been so hung up on having a BM that I took Milk of Magnesia last night and I'm so relieved that I can tick that bad-boy's box! lol my wounds are a little tender - I have metal clips which need to be removed next Saturday. I'm still very much feeling my way around this new world... I'm still nervous that I'll get a complication ... I'm still nervous that it won't work on me... I don't think I'll have the courage to tell anyone! I've decided I need therapy to help me from sabotaging this procedure - I start it in a few weeks' time! So scared I'll revert back to my disastrous relationship with food! This place is such a great community - I've so enjoyed reading everyone's posts and experiences! They have been invaluable... Good luck to you/us all!
  7. I took a week off and ended up taking some unplanned half days in the second week. I probably should have taken 10 days - 2 weeks off. What I didn’t realize is that in addition to recovering from the surgery, I’d be functioning on very few calories in the beginning. For me, it was less than 300 for a couple of weeks. That alone made me feel weak and woozy. My job involves traveling between sites and I barely had the strength.

I had surgery 10/8 and it took me 10 days and the help of a laxative to go. It was probably a combination of lack of Water, lack of food and opioids slowing everything down. I've been taking Miralax regularly since then and things have been much better. I've always had slow bowels though and normally only go 1-2x a week. Keep hanging in there everyone! I promise it gets better. I would kill for some fresh steamed veggies though. Everything tastes too salty or too sweet for me.

    New feelings

I am 10 days post op. I get that same cramp feeling the last 5 days when I’m in bed.
  12. At the hospital Monday morning at 5:30 am. Wheeled to surgery at 7:30 am. Surgery was suppose to be about 3 hrs. Hubby not called back until 3:30pm. They had problem waking me up. My asthma kicked in and I had acute kidney failure. Didn't get up walking until Wed morning. Came home Thursday and soooo glad to be in my bed! The surgery pain is very minimal. Biggest issue is my back pain from sleeping on those damn hospital beds! So if it weren't for my complications things would have gone a whole lot easier! Can't wait to start reaching some of my goals like tying shoes, fitting in a booth seat without having to test it to see if I fit before the hostess walks away, and of course buying smaller clothes sizes!

I talked to my nurse today about my BM. I have not had one since Monday 10/29. She said its normal because I haven't had any food. She said to give it a week or so then if know changes to talk to my doctor about it. I haven't taken the pains meds. I don't really have pain nor nausea. Today I drank really cold water to fast while walking on the treadmill and it made me feel different but not sick Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

10/23 here...no pain meds since first day and doing well. I am really looking forward to purée which I can’t start until Tuesday. At my one week appointment I was 16 lbs down since surgery. BTW I was too afraid to take pain meds thinking I may throw up so I could have used some for a few days but just didn’t do it. Congrats on doing well and getting off meds! Being healthier is the true goal!

    October 2018 Sleevers

Hey everyone...who had their sleeve done 10/22 ish? I had mine with no issues. Surgical pain in the hospital, threw up once in the hospital when I got out of bed for the first time. Dishcharged the mornong after surgery. Narcotic pain relievers for that day and the next, tyelnol only for the following 8. Nothing for a couple of days now. I'm on full liquids and transitioning to pureed. I'm getting about 48-52oz of my water in. No discomfort eating or drinking. Some gas pain at first was due to drinking too much too fast. I am not hungry which is so bizarre as you all know. Sometimes I wonder if they really removed my stomach. I'm having no issues with pain and eating. No BM since surgery but went a lot right before and only liquid since. I've always been a 1-2x a week person, not sure how long this should take. I'm taking colace and benefiber. I feel like a freak, I can't seem to find anyone who's had a recovery like mine yet. If anyone has been similar, let me know 😉👍 I'm so excited for all of us. I've lost 13lbs since surgery, and my blood pressure and blood sugar has corrected. I'm already off three of the five RX meds I was on, and another has been cut in half. I'm so stoked and excited about this journey. Yay, us!

Had my surgery on 10/31. Been horribly nauseous ever since. Please tell when that gets better because I hate being nauseous more than anything!
  17. This may have been discussed before but for anyone covered by CIGNA or one of its affiliated companies, they have abandoned their prior formal requirement of a specific duration (e.g. 3 months) in favor of this language: • A statement from a physician/physician’s assistant/nurse practitioner/registered dietician (i.e., other than the requesting surgeon) that the individual has failed previous attempts to achieve and maintain weight loss by medical management. This is the old language: • Medical management including evidence of active participation within the last 12 months in a weight-management program that is supervised either by a physician/physician’s assistant/nurse practitioner or a registered dietician for a minimum of three consecutive months ((i.e., ≥ 89 days). The weight-management program must include monthly documentation of ALL of the following components:  weight  current dietary program  physical activity (e.g., exercise program) Programs such as Weight Watchers®, Jenny Craig® and Optifast® are acceptable alternatives if done in conjunction with the supervision of a physician/physician’s assistant/nurse practitioner or registered dietician and detailed documentation of participation is available for review. However, physician-supervised programs consisting exclusively of pharmacological management are not sufficient to meet this requirement. Anyone covered by CIGNA now and going through a mandatory weight loss program under the old medical policy should request their surgeon/bariatric program to submit their request for approval NOW and not wait to finish the supervised diet. You might get some push-back from crusty bariatric practices or surgeons, but hopefully they will help you. The new policy is more favorable to patients, and because it is the medical policy in effect for anyone having surgery after October 9th, we take the position this is the operative medical policy - NOT the policy at a patient's "starting point". Call us at 1-877-992-7732 if you have questions about this or are in need of any information about what you need to do if you have been denied by your insurer - whether it is CIGNA or any other payer. Good luck to all! CIGNA medical policy effective October 9 2018.pdf
  18. Hi everyone, I wasn’t having this problem the first couple of days I started taking the complete chewable multivitamin by Celebrate, but I have just taken my first one today and I couldn’t keep it down. I tried to eat it along with unsweetened applesauce and usually I just get really nauseous, but up it came, apple sauce included. I had surgery on 10/8, so is this something that gets better with time? Has anyone else experienced and found relieve while getting the correct vitamin in? I’m supposed to take it twice a day but I would skip the night one honestly because that is when I would feel the most nauseous, I used to be okay taking it in the morning. Suggestions are welcomed. I did consult my Surgeons’ PA when she called to check on me yesterday, I was told not to do the flit stone vitamins, but to try a different adult complete vitamin. 🤢🤮😔

    Non Scale Victories

Sort of a scale victory - but for the first time in my marriage (10 years in March 2019), I weigh less than my husband!
  20. Bypass surgery 10/29. Had some complications. Developed kidney failure. Came home yesterday. Past few days I have been getting random hot flashes. My face and neck turn bright red and lasts a few minutes. Anyone else experience this or know what is causing it?

    Suddenly Terrified

I have multiple disabilities. A month out from surgery, I can assure you: a smaller stomach is not a disability. (The first few weeks, as your body heals, yes: you're disabled. You're a little extra tired. Maybe there's pain--though by the second week, it's really minimal for most of us. In my case, I'm still, for a few more days, not allowed to lift 10 pounds or more. But when that rule is lifted, I won't have any surgery-related disabilities anymore.) Also, with the sleeve, you can take NSAIDs after ... 6 months? I think? My doctor gave me a date, but it was far enough out that I don't remember. Anyway, they aren't off the table forever, so I wouldn't worry overmuch about potential future pain issues. This is a surgery, and like any surgery, there are risks. The risks of this particular surgery are lower than for gallbladder removal and for joint replacement. Only three people out of a thousand die within the first month, which is still not a number I took lightly, but I chose my surgeon carefully, as I assume you did as well. I'll be honest: I wouldn't have taken the risk if I didn't have a comorbidity that was going to continue to degrade my quality of life without this intervention. That's how my math worked out when I weighed all of the pros and cons, all of the risks and potential rewards. Only you can do that math for your own situation, and I hope that, whatever decision you make, it brings you a sense of peace and confidence that you're making the right decision for yourself.

    December Sleevers??

Oh silly me, I didn't realize this was a year old thread. But huge congrats on your success![emoji471] [emoji123] A size 8 must feel amazing! [emoji126] Even when I was in high school the smallest I ever was was a size 12. I've been yo-yoing the same 60 lbs for at least 10 years, it's ridiculous. I cannot wait for my sleeve. I know it'll be a huge adjustment but oh so worth it. Sent from my LG-M255 using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. I would be frustrated, too. My pre-op diet was a lot more bearable than what you're doing, in that it was essentially the long-term diet of a bariatric patient,* just ... more, because I didn't have the tool yet. Protein first, then veggies/fruit (fruit was limited to 1 serving per meal, but I could have it with every meal if I wanted), and I was allowed whole grains, as well (also limited to 1 serving per meal -- 1/2 cup brown rice, 1 wrap, and so on). Snacks were not encouraged, but I could have a cheese stick if I really needed it. Unlimited sugarfree jello and popsicles got me through a lot of night time hunger, since I was supposed to be losing 10% of my body weight on that diet. (And I did, just barely.) Keto's a lot harder for me to stick to, although if you've been doing it since April, I guess by now you've got your household and friends working with you (for instance: not doing meetups at pizza joints all the time). I wonder if you might want to take this time to switch over to something closer to what Kaiser will want you to do, long-term? You'll regain a little of your natural water weight, going back to eating fruit and higher-carb vegetables, and some people find that to be too upsetting, so this is just an idea for you to consider, no pressure. But once I settled into it a little, I found the normal long-term bariatric patient diet to be really doable, and that encouraged me a lot, in the time leading up to my surgery--I didn't have these "I can't do this diet anymore" feelings, so much (until the liquid diet, ugh). It didn't feel like a diet. I even had small cheats, from time to time (examples: a small piece of pie at my partner's birthday, a trip out with friends who wanted frozen yogurt--mine was heavy on the fruit, light on the yogurt, pizza with some veggies on it a maximum of once per month), and continued to lose weight. It felt good, for me, anyway. To be clear: I'd still have been frustrated to have the process take so long. Not in an "I can't do this" kind of way, but just because the anxiety of having it hanging over me, and having to hold off on some things I wanted (a new job, mostly) would have been upsetting. I just wouldn't have suffered any additional strain from the diet. Anyway, whether this is a good idea for you or not, your feelings are entirely justified. It's reasonable to be upset. *sure, sure, lots of bariatric patients do keto, post-op, but there aren't that many doctors that force it on you -- I know for a fact Kaiser doesn't

    Lap Band to Sleeve

This was my exact experience as well. 10 years on the Band & 110lbs lost. I had a major slip and had it removed in emergency surgery. I gained 90 lbs back in a year. I just had the sleeve and I’m 12 days post op. I was really great after surgery. I was the first of the 6 patients on my surgery to get discharged. I’ve been feeling great but super weak. I commonly get a vesa-vagal response and it’s acting up. A few times a day it humbles me and makes me lay down. At my 10 day follow up appointment I had lost 14.17% of my excess body weight. The first week it fell off but it’s starting to even out and come off much more slowly now.
