    I am stuck.

Really I think you need to see a qualified Bariatric nutritionist. Congratulations on losing the 102 lbs. that is fantastic! We can all tell you what we do, or don't do but we all have different stats. Like heights, exercise regimes, jobs, even where we live can make a difference etc. There are a lot of threads about plateaus and you can search for them and read it all but none of it will be as succinct as a nutritionist that you get on with and trust. I personally have not read about any sleeve patient that can get in 1500 cals per day in the first year or so, but that is not to say there are none around. There are also a lot of books, many of which you can download, which will help with post surgery dietary requirements. I am a bit concerned about the sugar question, do you mean carbs found in fruit and veges or do you mean sugar added? If you mean sugar added the answer is none full stop. I am sure you will get more answers but I hope this helps in the meantime.

    early start

No, you need to follow the plan your team gave you. Don't look to a message board of internet strangers to grant you permission to go against medical orders. If you feel like you are ready to progress to mushy foods, you need to call your surgeon, dietitian, bariatric nurse practitioner -- someone from your team -- and discuss it with them and see if they think you are ready.
  3. The only reason you would need to have the band removed would be if it was medically necessary. When I had to have mine removed due to infection my insurance covered it 100%. If the doctor reports it as medically necessary, it is covered even if your plan does not cover bariatric surgery, like mine does not. When I got sick I was scared to death that the removal surgery would not be covered, but my new doctor reassured me it would be covered. As far as your choice, if I were young and planning to have children in the future, I would factor that into the equation and discuss it with my doctor. I too chose the band, because the only other alternate at the time was bypass. I had my band done with 8 of my coworkers and none of the others have had any problems. I am the only one who picked up a staph infection and we all saw the same doctor for the surgery and the fills (except for one). Of course, at this point because of my problems, I can only recommend the sleeve. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com
  4. OK - quick recap - banded almost 5 years, stomach dilation, converting to Sleeve - Insurance approved and surgery scheduled for 9/7/10. I made all of these plans before really getting to question my surgeon about the sleeve so I had an appointment on 7/14 and we spent quite a bit of time talking about sleeves. He usually uses a 36f bougie and oversews. I'll be in the hospital for 2-3 days and I will have a drain - yuck. I will be his 6th or 7th sleeve but as he put it "in Boston that may be the most any one surgeon has done", now I don't know if that is true but I do know that my surgeon is GOOD. I have full confidence in his surgical abilities - he is the Cheif of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatrics at BIMDC in Boston. Am I a little nervous - Yup - but he has done hundreds if not thousands of lap RNY, the guy knows his stuff and was very fluent in explaining the Sleeve process so I know I'll be OK. We discussed the possibility of switching from lap to open if there was a problem and that I may end up with a modified sleeve (a little larger on top) due to scarring from the band. All in all the risk seems very acceptable and I'm really starting to look forward to my new stomach. In the mean time being unfilled in murder and I've stopped gaining but I am sitting about 25lbs heavier then when I had Fluid - our goal right now is to pamper my stomach and let it resume as much of its normal shape as possible so that I can has as close to a normal sleeve as possible. Fingers crossed - the up side - 3 weeks off of work!!!!

    Surgeon Consult On Weds =)

Took the time to jot down my 3 day food diary this morning. I'm excited to meet with the bariatric team and surgeon this morning. Not sure I have an appetite for breakfast. LOL I will be sure to keep you all posted on how things go.

    Starting the process

Thank you for your reply! Luckily I'm in Canada and covered by my Inuit status as well as MCP, the only thing I'll need to cover is my flights to and from the city in our province with the bariatric team. I had a referral sent in for the VSG procedure but hopefully this education process now will tell me if that's my best option. All my research says yes but the doctor's may give me other info. Yes! I'd like to start getting into the right diet so that it's sustainable!

    Welcome!

Intro - My name is Edie and I'm 54. I've been waiting for this surgery since 2008. FINALLY BCBS North Carolina stopped calling it investigational. I've finished all my pre-op testing and the doctor's office submitted it to the insurance company. Now I wait in suspense. I think it could happen pretty quickly once they get approval. I had to have a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy and some samples were sent for biopsy so that could take a couple weeks - I don't know if they will wait for those results before scheduling me. The GI doc said everything looked good and that he was going to clear me for surgery. After waiting all these years, it doesn't even seem real. My surgeon has done MANY bariatric surgeries, but only about a dozen sleeves. He seems very comfortable with it though and I am comfortable with him and the reputation of the practice. I was tested up one side and down the other!
  8. Congrats on the weight loss! I've been a member of bariatric pal since my surgery. Haven't followed it a whole lot since then. Looking to get some support as I initially lost 70 pounds, but have regained 30! It has me freaked out! However, my own fault here...I started a private practice (I'm a psych nurse practitioner) and have been so focused on work I have not been exercising at all. Also went back to some bad eating habits. Trying to get back on track and get into a regular routine of my daily 2-3 mile walks.

    Venting!

I have a GREAT psychologist whom I'm seeing privately. He is also the person who did my bariatric intake interview / testing / interpretations. But I swear that some of your stories sound like there are some incompetent buffoons out there doing clinical psychology work for a living who don't know how to interpret psychometric instruments and don't understand the strengths and weaknesses of those tools. Those tests should not be used like Tarot cards. (joke) S.M.H.
  10. When I attended my orientation, the bariatric coordinator explained that we would have to choose between the two and we pick them. The Dr uses both and it's up to the patient. I have been running searches but to no avail. When they passed both around the room, the differences that stood out to me were the way the band inflates. The Lap Band has sectioned pieces on the ring and the Realize has one continuous band (non perforated) if that makes any sense. My question is - Did others have options between the two? Are there pros and cons to each? Are they the same in results? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

    Help w/fitness pal

I didn't do a manual setting. I just put in my basic info and activity level. It won't make a difference. Anything under 1000 calories is still going to give you a warning when you close your diary for the day because there is no setting for bariatric diets. I'm on and accept friends as long as they share their diaries. My username is Milaxx if you want to add me.
  13. Anyone what the right goal percentages are for a bariatric diet? Like how much fat, carb, Protein? Putting 100% protein is unrealistic because everything has some kind of fat or carb. Doing so will throw your numbers off.

    Vitamins

How do you guys deal with Vitamins? I have been really bad about taking mine for at least 6 months and need to get back on track. One of the things that I need to do..... My doctor prescribed prenatal chewable vitamins... I am just not sure how many to take considering the bariatric part... I am also supposed to be taking folic acid because of my methotrexate. The only other thing I take are b12 injections because of another deficiency.. I am trying to get back on track... Have been dealing with a lot and things have gotten away from me.. I have been experiencing some odd symptoms that I haven't dealt with before... I have been bruising a lot and then breaking out on my face- I have never had acne at all... Maybe my hormones are out of wack.

    Any WLS book recommendations?

These were recommended to me by my therapist and nutritionist: Mindless Eating. Why We Eat More Than We Think by Brian Wansink, PhD The Emotional First Aid Kit. A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery by Cynthia L. Alexander PsyD (this is the only one that I've read) WLS for Dummies

    PO Gastroparesis, anyone?

I was sleeved this year March 2015. I am suffering horribly with Gastroparesis. The meds Protonix and Reglan are not working for me. I am to the point where nothing is staying down. I received four bags of saline so far for dehydration. I see my surgeon and gastronologist this Tuesday and am hoping there is some resolution other than a feeding tube. The bariatric nurse said the cases she has seen it goes away if you acquired GP PO which is my case. Any information would be very helpful. I hope you found a resolution to your situation.

Did you get insurance to pay???

I think each individual policy is different. I have BCBS of California and my husbands employer included bariatric coverage. Someone else can have BCBS of California and their employer may have chosen to NOT cover that, so it will depend on the policy not necessarily the carrier.

    band to sleeve

I had band to sleeve surgery in November. I had my band placed in 2005 and had nothing but problems. But the Dr. deflated the band about a month preop and did the removal and sleeve in the same surgery. It was a difficult surgery for me due to scar tissue from the band and from a previous open spleenectomy from years ago. I don't know about your insurance requirements but mine was horrible. They approved the surgery and after the fact told me there was a 25,000 cap per lifetime for bariatric care. I had a four day stay in the hospital due to complications which resulted in a 100,000 bill~ that I'm responsible for....
  21. To exercise or to not. It would seem that in the bariatric world there are two camps. Camp Exercise and Camp No Exercise. For me personally, I knew that once I had VSG that I wanted to exercise to decrease loose skin and to be physically strong. I am not interested in being a small weak person. I also discovered that exercising helps to boost my energy. Having said all that I know that some following their surgery may not be physically able to exercise or at least right away. For those in the other camp I have nothing against them, but I want exercise to be a part of my journey. What do you think? Should we exercise or not? I know some of you may want to comment with well as long as you are eating right that is important. I agree, but this posting is not about the eating aspect of losing weight, but exercising and physical activity. Lastly, I have a dread someone is going to write something along the lines of judging others and what not. There is no judgment here or at least not from me. I am simply stating what I think is best for me and would like to hear others thoughts on the same topic. And go
  22. Please don't take what I say as bible truth, but I review surgeries for a major insurer (not Humana). For my company, if there any policy changes, they would go into effect from the day the new policy was published. Up until that day, the old policy will apply. The issue of a request being submitted shortly before a change in policy is something we have never explicitly been told how to handle. In the end, it may be up to the insurer. I'd say, if you have all criteria met now for the current policy, then submit now. An approval cannot be "taken back" once it's been issued. My company issues approvals that are good for one year for the line of business I handle. Some lines of business have 6 month approvals. And of course, it may be different for other companies. In any case, My suggestion is if you meet criteria and are denied for the basis that you don't meet criteria for the future policy, then appeal that decision. It is almost always worth it to appeal a denial since I see so many denial decisions overturned. The only hard stop I know of is if a group does not cover bariatric surgery. Other than that, it's always worth pursuing. Hope this helps.

    Sleep study consult

Isqueezed the sleep study in between my last monthly class and my pre options appointment. It was crazy because the sleep study Dr said I didn't need cpap just an oral appliance but the bariatric surgeon insisted. Not sue why I had to have the study... I hate the cpap. It wakes me up constantly with this loud farty noise and thus far I have not woken up feeling at all "well rested and refreshed". The darn thing reports back to headquarters so I must comply. I plan returning it as soon as I can.
  24. Getting excited and nervous! Surgery approved and scheduled for September 4th with the possibility they may move it to the 3rd due to a cancellation. All my pre-op lab work and testing is done and without any concerns. Same for my psych eval, barium swallow, chest x-ray, EKG, and EGD. Did all my pre-op nutrition appointments (I was fast tracked, so there weren't as many as most of you had). Did the pre-op group class where they explained my pre-op diet and what to expect at the hospital and post op. Started my bariatric vitamins last week. Purchased any food/supplies that I think I might need for the first couple weeks post op (my husband even told me to get him a new bigger TV so I can have a TV in my room the first couple days lol... and he got a 65" screen out of it lol). Today I did my final pre-op weigh in and doctor visit. Saw another doc first (teaching hospital), then my real doc. Signed my surgery consent. Too my surprise, the doc also told me that it doesn't matter how much weight I lose now, I am totally approved for surgery (before I had to be careful I didn't put myself under a certain weight and disqualify myself). YAY! I also asked him about how much time I can take off work (I have 14 weeks of sick time saved up and a supportive employer- not that I actually want 14 weeks off, just didn't take all my sick time over the many years I worked there). He said a minimum of 2 weeks but up to 8 since I do have a fairly physical job. YAY! I could probably get away with going back early, but why push myself when I have the time and support? I would rather heal, adjust to my new diet(s) over the next month or so, and slowly build a new fitness routine before going back to the craziness that is work. Not sure how many weeks I will actually take off, but good to know I have options. And then finally, I went to a pre-op anesthesia appointment. Answered all of their questions and signed their consent. So... all that is left is to call and confirm the time of my surgery the afternoon before! And how did I celebrate? I got my last meal of my favorite Indian food. Yum! And my husband is TRYING to be supportive of all of this, but he really doesn't want me to have what he considers to be elective surgery. I understand where he is coming from, especially since every one of his surgeries has had some sort of complications. But my surgeries have all been routine and without complication. And I really need to improve my health and this seems to be the only way to get me there.
