    Hi Everyone!

It's normal to be scared. Avoid the complications thread, that was the best thing I did for myself  And I went through the B&A Pics over and over. I don't have suggestions on filling up, the liquid stage for me was just toughing it out. Knowing it was for a good cause! I kept chicken broth handy and sipped it whenever I was getting hungry. I also put seasoning in it, I use Papa John's seasoning packets (DH orders lots of pizzas, I'd have him get me the packets).

    Tiniest hint of heartburn

Wow, Karen! You got to 8cc's quick in your VG band! I am at 8.1 now, and am 9 months out! Coincidentally, 8.0 is where I started to have mild heartburn, reflux problems. Also, heartburn and reflux are listed on my sheet as a complication/side effect immediately following a fill. You may be a bit swollen (inside) because of the fill. If so, go slow for a few days, liquids and mushies. Did they do a barium swallow? If you are too restricted, the barium will have difficulty trickling down. And yes, a slight unfill of even just 0.1-0.5cc's will help end the reflux (when you lay down with food that hasn't cleared the pouch, acid jumps up trying to help digest it=heartburn/reflux). The big bands are hard to tweak, but have more room for adjustment. When I've had reflux, no amount of dietary changes, timing changes nor medications could help...just an unfill! Good luck and be careful!
  3. Update I was sleeved on March 26th. Since then I've lost 76lbs and feeling great with no complications

    Dr. Is Always Booked-up

My doctor does fills on a set schedule--he follows a standard fill protocol that is carefully laid out ahead of time (usually at 4-6 week intervals). His office is very busy as well. The only time I could see myself demanding an immediate appointment would be if some type of serious complication developed.

    Band Removed Due To Erosion

It's sheer narcissism that anyone would disagree with someone's personal erosion experience. Unless you've experienced erosion then you're clueless and only base opinions on and endless supply of unconfirmed reading and hearsay. Only a paranoid delusional narcissist would post disagreements to a true story of real erosion to turn yet another thread into a debate. If you don't have any complications, stick to what you've been through and debate your know-it-all disagreements to the Rants and Raves section.

    Band Removed Due To Erosion

So, TD, I assume from your post that you ARE a lap band surgeon who is qualified to speak for everyone who has ever been banded? Considering that each surgeon has different ideas about every phase of lap band surgery, from pre op diet to treatments of complications, I would say it is presumptuous of you to speak for all surgeons and all patients. Please share your experiences, by all means. Even tell us what your surgeons' opinions are. They are educated, trained, informed opinions, but opinions nevertheless. My surgeon may disagree. I see no need to attack anyone who disagrees with you. Using phrases like "paranoid delusional narcissist is rude and an indication that the phrase applies to you more than to anyone else.

    Not happy

Don't let yourself stay too tight for long. Complications can arise. Also when you are too tight the tendency is to eat higher calorie soft and liquid foods, then the weight doesn't come off then either. When you are at the proper restriction you will loose weight and still get in your nutrition as well.

    Freaking Out

Ok, I don't exactly know where to start but I will start with: Today I went for a consult with dr. Jay. He suggested I have the gastric sleeve procedure done. I have a history of healing complications and he advised this would bypass all of those possibilities. I have scheduled for the procedure on 12-4. NOW I AM FREAKING OUT. :help: anyone know anyone that has had this, what their success has been? all those other questions.

Were you sure it wouldn't work?

I went into this knowing that it will work at least for some of the weight loss that I would need but not sure I will loose it all. And a little terrified I would have complications and then the band would have to come out and then I'd gain it all back. With all my past failures at dieting, I had given up and haven't dieted in years. Who wants to do all that work to see the pds come marching back with their friends in tow? As far as telling people, I would rather have not told anyone at all. But we are not an island and it is impossible to keep it a secret from everyone. So my husband and children know as well as my brother and SIL- all sworn to secrecy! I am a private person in many ways. WLS is drastic to me. It may not be to many here, so please don't be offended, but for me it is. I guess it is a matter of that darn pride. I just didn't want people to know how desperate I was, that I would resort to such a drastic measure. The thought of people knowing and gossiping and talking about it- horrifies me. But that is me. Wasa congratulations for getting to goal- how much did you loose?

Kellymovingon, How did you get to do it? Did you have some kind of complication?

    Mixed Emotions

:help:I have been struggling with this decision for over 2 years. I have tried every diet known to man and just can't seem to succeed. I am currently at 265 lbs and fear I will just get bigger. I considered the Lap Band for over a year and a half before finally telling my mom that I wanted to look into it. Thought she was all for it, but after she went to the seminar with me, she became scared of it. She talked me into giving dieting another try. That was back in August. Since then I have gone from 269 lbs to 256 lbs and then back up to 265 lbs. Now it is December and I am kicking myself for not doing what I felt was right for me. I could have been banded by now. When I see and read the success stories, I get very hopefull. Yet, when I read the possible complications, I get scared. I worry that I will spend all that money on another gimmick that I will just fail at. My cousin had the Duodenal Switch done. She says she has never had the problem of food getting stuck or PB. Of course that is surgically altering your insides permantly. If anyone could please give me some personal input on their experience good or bad, I would really appreciate it.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
  12. I did a lot of research and read a lot of posts on these boards before deciding which doctor to go with in Mexico. Ultimately, I was looking for the best surgeon I could get for the best price. After reviewing all of the doctors, it seems that Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Kuri have the best reputations, credentials and the least amount of complications. I finally settled on Dr. Kuri because he has a web special price right now of $7500 vs. Dr. Ortiz who is charging $8500. My second choice was Dr. Huacuz who charges $7000 but his package only includes two days in hospital whereas Dr. Kuri's package includes two days in hospital and two days in a hotel. In case something goes wrong I liked the comfort of being close to the doctor for the longer period of time. Plus, Dr. Kuri normally charges $8950 so I thought his special price gave me access to an excellent surgeon at a reasonable price. Dr. Allessandrini and the Banajor Obesity Centre didn't even make my short list based on my research and the reviews that I have read.

    Social Events After Banding

Just go, and ignore the food. If someone asks, just say something about some minor complications from the gall bladder surgery, and that your doctor asked that you follow special instructions. It's pretty much the truth, and will hopefully embarrass the asker enough to shut them down.
  14. I am 8 days post op and am ashamed to admit that today I have eaten way too much. I had a bowl of cream of wheat, a half cup of pureed ravioli, 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, and a whole baked potato. And not feeling any discomfort or restriction. From what I've read in other forums, it is not usual for patients to be able to comsume this much food this early on. Could someone please tell me if this is a sign of a possible complication?
  15. Hi, all I had the lapband surgery in Lafayette, LA with Dr. Gary Stevens December, 2006. To date I've lost 43 pounds. I would have hoped to have lost more weight almost two years post surgery but I had a complication which I am now just getting over. I started vomiting January of this year but did not tell my doctor. I can't tell you why but it was a definite mistake on my part, because by March I couldn't keep anything down. My doctor unfilled my band for 3 months and told me I had a pouch dilation. My band was too tight. Three weeks ago I had my first refill. So basically I'm starting over. I did manage to maintain a 40 pound weight loss through all of this. I lost another 3 pounds the last 3 weeks since my refill. My surgery was self-pay and so were my fills so I guess you could say I'm a lot smarter now that I've been through all of this. I will ONLY be eating 1/2 cup of food per meal; only drink between meals; limit carbs, and CHEW, CHEW, CHEW. (I'm addressing head hunger which promotes emotional eating for me.) I have so much to make up for but I feel I'm back on the right road and feel fortunate I was able to keep my band. Sorry so long, but I felt the need to write all of this down, for myself and just maybe for someone else out there with my same issues.
  16. Check out the complications Forum, lots of folks there have had a slip and many have had another band placed.
  17. Well "a lot" in terms of the complications we see here. :wink2:

Newbie weighing option band vs. sleeve

But why would consider a 2nd surgery??? Yikes. The sleeve does sound less complicated than the Roux-n-Y . Can it be done laproscopically??? What is the recovery time, surely is longer than LapBand as they do remove most of your stomach, therefore more stitching and healing to be done. None of your internal organs are CUT in Lapband, making recovery time mininal and very painless... I was out walking around the block the same evening as surgery and hiking in the woods the second day. Only took tylenol for pain for a couple of days. Pretty good I'd say... But the advantage with the Sleeve is you don't have to have repeat visits to the Doc's for fills.... Pros and Cons to both.. What are the COST differences?

    psych evaluation 3 hours???

the MMPI is such an old antiquated test- it is nearly useless, personally I see it having very little utility in pre-op evaluation. There is a newer MMPI-2 released in 2007, but I am not even sure about the validity of that one. This is my personal opinion, but I think the psych eval should be geared towards judging a patient's compliance with post op intructions, their support network, and their understanding of complications, risks, and long-term lifestyle changes. I was self pay and still had to undergo one. Mine took about 30 mins. sounds like I was very lucky.
  20. There are 2 forums here you should probably check out, 1 is the complications forum, and the 2nd is a forum for people who've had to have their bands removed. You might check those out for information.
  21. I would like to hear from bandsters who have been banded OVER 5 YEARS?? OVER 10 YEARS?? I read posts from all of you wonderful people, but most of the band dates are very recent. I would like to know what complications?? what successes?? Are you happy with the results??? Are you sorry you did it years ago?? Did you have to be re-banded with a newer lap band model?? I am being banded on Friday March 20, and I am concerned with the LONG TERM consequences. Thank you cc

    Band Slippage

Hi there! You might want to go back to "home" page and go all the way down to the "Lap Band Complications" section and there are several threads there regarding slippage and what it feels like and solutions to fix it like getting completely unfilled and getting on liquids for a duration, etc... So, check that section out for some helpful answers... also, you might want to get a fluro done to see it on xray.. I believe that's how they tell.
  23. Hi everyone! I'm not quite sure if this is the right forum, but I'm sure its no biggie. I have just made an appointment with my doctor for a lap band consultation. Currently, I am 24 yrs. old at 5ft 3in and weigh 240lbs (109 kg). I have toiled over weight reduction surgery for the past 3 or 4 years. I was just wondering about a few things that maybe you all could help me with before I even go to my consultation. I know hair loss is very typical post-op, and is experienced differently person to person, but I was just wondering if your hair ever comes back? I was a Water polo player back in my high school days and the swim cap that I wore every day sort of contributed to a slight thinning of my hair, especially in the front, so I'm a bit concerned about if my hair will regain its natural thickness once my body has leveled out (protien levels and all that jazz). I was also wondering about pregnancy after the surgery. Have any of you women had children since you have been banded? I do plan on having children sometime in my life (preferably before I'm 30), and I was wondering if the band has any sort of complications with pregnancy. I've done a lot of self research on this, and I really think that this is the right choice for me. I've been the chubby girl my whole life, and I am the only one in my immediate family that has ever had a weight problem. Any advice or comments would be greatly appriciated!

    Pre-op diet

I was put on low carb three weeks before surgery. Lost 20 lbs pre-op! My doctor also requires clear liquids two days before surgery. Sounds like you have a good plan. Stick to it. It is important to shrink your liver prior to surgery to reduce the risk of complications. Good luck!!!!!!!
