Close to 4 months Postop VSG

Hey, im 4 months post op as well 10/10/22....started at 397 and I'm now 311...this journey is something else
  2. Your fears are normal! I would think it is safe to say we have all felt this way. I have lost 100+ lbs multiple times! I always know how to get it off but I haven't been able to master KEEPING it off. Which was my deciding factor for surgery. I was hoping that the smaller stomach would help me. I had the same worries, if I couldn't do it before what is the difference. I know of a few people that gained most or all plus some of their weight back. So I had the constant fear of why bother if I will just fail here too. I did it, and although I can't officially say I have been successful because I am not even a year post op. I can tell you that unless you eat non stop all day then you just can't enough enough. That is what I needed to help me. I can eat healthy but never felt full or satisfied. I hope to be one of the people here 5/10 years from now, encouraging people and inspiring them from my success alone. I wish I had done this years ago! You got this, you can do it with the help of your tool and a new mindset. I (we) are rooting for you!!!

  4. I’m new to this and to give you some background I’ve struggled with weight for the past 20+ years. Tried a lot of diets and worked with my physician, but nothing seemed to work I was recommended for bariatric however, it took me almost 10 years to get insurance to help pay. It was a lot of work, and it makes the thought of failure scary. since my surgery, which happened on February 1, I’ve been lucky to have very few complications. I’ve been able to eat and drink without problems and I’m starting on the third phase however, I still am struggling with fear that I’m overheating, because it’s been fairly easy so far. It’s been difficult as well, because I can’t, or haven’t been able to identify, feeling full, and not having the negative Effects of made it hard to judge. Maybe this is just post surgery jitters, has anyone else experiencing this?
  5. I absolutely love my sleeve. BUT, I have to have a revision to bypass because it caused me MAJOR gerd issues. I didn't have any kind of gerd or reflux pre surgery, so I chose the sleeve. But it's caused horrible gerd, which made me need very high dose of PPI long term and gave me gastritis and esophagitis. The PPI caused pre cancerous polyps all through my stomach (3 different kinds, all different sizes) that require multiple procedures to remove them. Once that's done and I'm cleared, I have to have a revision to the bypass. If it wasn't for this, I would be ecstatic with my sleeve. I lost 110 pounds in 9 months. I went from a size 10 ring to a size 7. I went from a size 28/30 in clothes to 18/20. I got off my blood pressure medication and all 3 diabetes meds. I'm able to go BEAST MODE in my work outs. I wish I didn't have to get the bypass, but here we are. So just do your research because even if you don't have any gerd issues at all, the sleeve can cause it and you may end up with a revision to the bypass anyway.
  6. Asheville's great! I haven't been there in probably 40 years, but from what I hear, it's gotten even better since then! (it seemed pretty wonderful even back then...). I lived in Watauga and Avery counties - so about 1.5 hours from Asheville. We were about 10 miles from Tennessee and maybe 30 from Virginia - so up in the top corner. P.S. if you're not familiar with that area - it was the Boone/Blowing Rock/Linville/Banner Elk area. Very protty - but I was in my 20s then and there really wasn't much there for young single people unless you were into skiing or hiking. i think I would have been much happier living in Asheville.
  7. you do have to comply with your clinic's program or you'll eventually regain weight (although a 10-20 lb gain once you hit your lowest weight is very common - and almost expected. I planned for that when I set my goal and went a bit under goal to compensate) that said, I'd never been able to lose weight and keep it off. I was over 200 lbs overweight, and I lost 50 or 60 lbs God knows how many times, only to gain it all back. I got the surgery (in my case, bypass) because if I couldn't even keep off 50 lbs for more than a couple of months, I knew there was no way I could lose and keep off 200 lbs. BUT...this actually worked. I did actually lose all that weight - over 200 lbs. Your stomach will be a lot smaller so you can't take in a ton of food AT ONE SITTING - plus, most people lose their sense of hunger for a few months (up to a year) after the surgery. Having no hunger makes it much easier to lose weight. Once the hunger comes back, though, which is does for most of us, it'll be more of a challenge. You're still not going to be able to eat a ton of food at one sitting, but you might start grazing or eating mindlessly if you're not watching yourself. So that's when you have to really make sure you're continuing to comply with the program. people gain weight back because they stop being compliant and old habits start creeping back in. As before, you still won't be able to eat as much as can now AT ONE SITTING, but if you're snacking all day, yep - you'll be able to take in a lot of calories. The examples I always use is that before I had surgery, I could eat half a large pizza for dinner. No way could I do that now. It would be physically painful. All I can manage is 1-2 pieces. BUT...if I ate 1-2 pieces at 5:00 pm, and another 1-2 pieces at 7:00 pm, and 1-2 pieces 9:00 pm, (which would be easy to do), I'd end up eating half the large pizza. So THAT'S what you need to watch out for. the surgery in and of itself shouldn't exaggerate depression. If you're feeling depressed, though, it'd probably be helpful to work with a therapist. A lot of us do - both for that or to deal with eating issues (unfortunately, as they say, the surgery is on our stomachs, not on our brains). where are you living in NC? I lived there for 10 years. I went to high school in Raleigh and when to college up in the mountains. My brother still lives in NC, so I still get down there occasionally...

Surgery more than 2 years ago?

I was sleeved a dozen years ago. I was in my mid 50's. I started at 320 pounds, lost 25 pre surgery, then lost to about 175. I stayed at about 180 for many years, but gained after some very tough emotional times over a few years to 220. But kept that 100 pounds off. About 4 years ago, I decided to try to lose 10 pounds in a year. I lost 10 in a few months, doing nothing but being intentional with what I ate; and going back to protein and veggies first. Over two years I lost 40 pounds, realizing that I needed to learn how to maintain my weight - so I would stop losing weight every so often (usually after 8 to 10 pounds down) and NOT lose more, but maintain where I was. How much was I eating, of what, when.... how much was I moving... watching myself and re learning ! I maintained my 175 pounds for another full year - about 7 months ago I decided to lose another 10 pounds. Got there and a few under. I am finally at 29 BMI ! I weigh 162. Less than I did in college in the 1970's !! Loose skin ? Yes. But at 67 next month, I do not want any elective surgeries. I wear a size 14 petite jeans. I have a ton more energy at 67 then I had at 54. I am still working and I organic garden, raise laying hens for organic eggs. I never liked carbonation, so that was never an issue. I eat a healthy diet. I grow fresh greens and veggies. I eat fresh fruits. I eat kind of low carb - if I have a sandwich with bread, for lunch I won't eat carbs for breakfast or dinner. I eat a treat every day. Even when losing weight. But now I can enjoy an oreo, or 2 little dove chocolates..... Or one skinny cow dessert. I had company for dinner this weekend. I BBQed burgers. I ate a half of a hamburger - half the bun, and some fresh fruit salad. I was almost on over fill ! I use most carbs as sprinkles. If I eat Asian, I order chicken and veggies. I sprinkle rice on top. Steak ? Sure. crumble part of a baked potato with it. I steam most veggies at home. I make fish on the grill a couple times a week and then make it into a salad the next day for lunch. I eat differently than I did before. I am healthy and happy. No regrets at all.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

My surgery is on Monday, February 20. I don’t have to start my liquid diet until February 19 at 2 PM. I had a different surgeon at first and he said I would have to do two weeks of a liquid diet before the surgery but the new surgeon is only making me have a liquid diet for less than a day before the surgery. I am very happy about that. Does anybody else have that less than 24 hours of a liquid diet?
  10. Surgery Feb 10 (sleeve). First 48 hours just plain sucked! Lots of gas pain and I was walking immediately when I got back to the recovery room after surgery. I remember the gas pain from both my C-sections so I wanted that pain gone. 8 days post op and last night was the best sleep so far. I am so over Jell-O and yogurt and protein shakes! Yesterday it felt like something was stuck in my throat and all I have been on is liquids but when I talk to the doctor, they said it was just my esophagus stretching out. I have a follow my doctor on Tuesday. I am so hungry like every day. I just feel like I’m starving and hungry. I get all my water in and protein but I am literally starving all making dinner for the rest of my family. I literally wanted to cry last night because of hunger. I can’t wait for the puréed stage.

Recovery TImes / Back to work

I work from home, had surgery 11/22/2022 on Tuesday and was working on Monday 11/28/2022. My worst day were Friday and Saturday prior to starting to work, by Monday I wasn't taking any pain killers, and was doing decently with my liquids which I prioritize the first week and then moved to prioritizing protein. I personally didn't feel tired but was ready to take breaks if needed and to do 6hrs instead of the usual 8-10. I lined up the medicine cups to have 1oz of water every 15 minutes and got up every hour to walk to the bathroom even if I didn't need to go just to get moving.

Any Feb surgery peeps out there?

Hi Everyone: I back here reporting on my progress. My surgery was 10 AM yesterday (2/17) and it’s currently 5:37 AM and I’m in my hospital room for the over night stay. I can officially say I’m “post op” hahaha. I’m laying in bed typing this here because I got a little bored and then thought about all you wonderful peeps here and said let me go up date them. I feel so so; the gas from the surgery has been the most annoying part for me. Like real bad…. I remember waking up in recovery with all these medical professionals over me and simply whining and holding my stomach begging for some type of relief. They responded with meds for pain and gas relief. Still hurt badly. While waiting for my hospital bed/room; they helped me walked around the recovery unit. I am sure it helped but it did not feel like it at the moment haha. I completely lost track of time once I went in surgery at 10 AM. I was so surprised to finally see a clock once in my hospital room and it was 5:55 PM. I said sheesh that was a daaaaaay. Overnight was not so bad. I’m just laying in silence right now on this comfortable bed which has been amazing. I’ve been walking the unit doing 5 laps about every hr. The gas issues has subsided a lot but still present. Ice chips has been cool; I did sneak a sip or two of the water because I am so thirsty and hungry. Nurse told me I will “eat” for the swallow test later this morning. Surprised bloodwork at 1:30 am while I was fast sleep lol. Results: Nurse coming in hours later to add Magnesium IV bag. So I’m here now chilling waiting for the sun to rise. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    So, so ready....

Had my surgery. Not feeling that great. Stomach is in some discomfort. Had 8 big polyps removed. 1 was super big, inflamed, and granular. So a biopsy was done on it. On the 10th, I'm having 8-10 removed again. Not sure if that's going to be all of them. Might have to do a 3rd surgery. There was some bleeding today, so the doctor could only do the 8 today. I slept a good portion of the day away, and I'm only having a protein shake for meals. Hoping I can move on to soup and maybe soft foods tomorrow and normal food by Sunday. Definitely not feeling great, tho. Blah.

    Before and After Pics

October 2023 will mark my 10 years sleeve anniversary. 🙏🏻🙌🏻👏🏻 I am going to be 53 April 2023 and I’ve never felt or looked better in my life!! This was ONE OF THE BEST decisions I ever made for ME! I did my first fitness competition last year and took second place in the Transformations Category. Nothing is “Impossible” the word itself tells you “I’m possible”!

Surgery more than 2 years ago?

Almost 4 years since my sleeve. Reached goal at 6 months. Exceeded it by another 10/11kg & have basically maintained +/- a kilo or two. Didn’t have co morbidities before my surgery. Didn’t really stall in the truest sense - just odd couple of days with no loss. No complications. Have low blood pressure but always had a tendency towards it. Gone from a couple of times a month to every day. (My higher weight probably kept my BP in the normal range.) Had my gall out about two years after my sleeve but not necessarily related to my weight loss. Still don’t eat rice, pasta, bread, potatoes. They sit heavily in my tummy. Don’t miss them. I have a glass of sparkling water every day but I let it go fairly fiat. Occasionally I’ll have a glass of champagne or have soda or tonic water as a mixer but no other carbonated drinks. Don’t drink much alcohol any more (a glass once a month+/-). Not that I can’t, just not interested. I have loose skin. Not a lot. Can’t really be seen under my clothes … unless you look closely.😉 I wear body conscious dresses without needing shape wear to control the loose skin. No regrets.

    Hungry

Hi - everyone everything is going well. I lost 105 lbs and on March 16th I’ll be my one year gastric bypass anniversary. Initially I had a somewhat difficult time eating- went on omeprazole for gastritis issues-it seemed to work. November I went to ER to realize after extensive testing I had a gallbladder attack. In December I had my gallbladder removed. I am doing well now but I am scared because I am hungry at night. Nighttime has always been my downfall. I try to eat well during the day. I work PT 10-2PM M-F and I start the day off with a protein shake - drink water-iced coffee no sugar almond milk-water-snack on either nuts, cheese, yogurt or protein bar. I try to have lunch right when I get home. I have dinner around 6-6:30. I consume about 1200 calories and always exceed my protein levels 70-80. On top of that I get fatigued. I do walk or do elliptical and recently kettlebells. I work ironically in a school cafeteria and it’s a very busy job. I can’t be very mindful as it is very fast paced. Has anyone got the night time hunger?
  20. Can you crush your pills? Maybe crush them and take them with some protein pudding to help with your protein intake. Another way I have made my goals is I have been doing the protein waters, kinda killing 2 birds with 1 stone. I also made myself jello with collagen protein in it so my 4oz jello has 10 g of protein. I know it can be hard especially with all the rules of eating and drinking after surgery, one of the things they told me to do was set a reminder for when to eat or drink and the man focus is to stay hydrated at this stage of the game. If you can get at least 1 protein shake in a day I would consider it a win.
  21. Hi, just signed up, didn't see an "introducing yourself" section. Have had various gastro related issues for the last couple years, found that I did not tolerate the PPI well, but have Barrett's Esophagus, which has to be addressed. Since I gained a fair amount of weight during Covid, looks like I qualify for bypass surgery which is a recommended approach to dealing with the Barrett's. I'm still going through various qualifying phases, but the surgeon/hospital here seem to know the drill. Still need to get my cardio doc to sign off and to see my primary. At this point in my life, near 70 years old, having been reduced to the Fodmap diet to minimize GERD (acid reflux), I'm ok with the more limited post surgical diet. I'm also looking to get my mobility back-- resumed at the gym, but it isn't as easy to drop the weight as it was 10 or 15 years ago when I stopped smoking and went full maniac on diet (paleo) and exercise (2 workouts/day plus swimming, pilates, etc). Just wanted to plug in here and as things progress on this journey, tap into the knowledge base here. Glad I found this place.
  22. 53 calories, steamed crawfish with Louisiana flavor. Ate it all. Some reason I can eat quite a bit of crawfish vs other seafood and meat. I ate 10 green grapes and 50g Chinese broccoli after.

    RYGB- Limb Lengthening

Thank you. I dont really get full now. But my pouch supposedly is still the same as when I had surgery in 2019. But put on 25-30lbs since 2021.

    Why so many sleeves

I wanted bypass and my doctor was pushing me towards sleeve. I had two friends that had sleeve and also easy regained weight. I knew one other person who had bypass and kept the majority of weight off 10+ years. The GERD was the tipping point for the doctor. He gets paid the same for sleeve and bypass but bypass takes longer for him to do. Yeah, I got the bypass!

    Grazing, is this normal?

Another good post that makes me think and wonder whether I graze or eat mini meals (or snacks) lol. I don't eat on schedule and there are days I am not hungry till 3 pm so I don't eat at all and just drink coffee and other days I begin at 10 am. I am all over the place when it starts but the time in between is naturally steady I guess, like 2 to 3 hours.
