  1. Hey guys. Just a quick question, I had my lap band this time last year. It has been very successful and I am now at my goal weight. Went from 120kgs to 63 kgs. I have had two fills my last being about 6 or 7 months ago. I do feel hungry a lot but I have lost my excess weight before through will power and through a lot of exercise. This seems to be the same I have lost my weight partly to the lapband but more I feel due to exercise and nutrition. I am at the stage where I am not exercising as much and have put some of the weight back on. I am going to see Kevin Dolan my surgeon in a couple of months and was going to ask him for a fill, do you think he will give me one even if I am at goal. I dont want to lose anymore weight I just want to not have to rely on exercise to keep the weight off. Cheers

    Help what do I do??

I had my band put in Oct 10ccband. First fill blind poke three tries 3cc in. Second two pokes dig dig 3cc in, third three pokes dig dig 1ccin RESTRICTION!!! Ya good weight loss happy. Fourth wanted to tweak a little only had restriction in the morning fill 1cc five pokes dig dig. Next day no restriction I think I have a leak. Drive another 200 miles for fluoro and she is able to get 5cc out I should have 8cc plus doc put in 2cc at time of surgery (that is 10 in a 10cc band) she adds 1cc more Fill # Five now I should have 11cc no restriction at all I have a leak. She said sometimes the tube collapses and you can’t get a true read. She said you don’t have a leak because I got something out. They don’t want to take any responsibility for f-ing it up. The obvious problem with having bands in Mexico is the after care. I knew this and yet chose to go for it. If I go back to my doc it is $2500 to replace port and tube. Then what who do I have do the fills? I should have had a sleeve that is what my doc is famous for and there would have been no fills, no leak and it was $2000 more than a band so in the long run cheaper after you factor in the cost of fills and heart ache!! ANYONE OUT THERE DO NOT HAVE NORTH WEST FILL CENTER IN ARLINGTON WASHINGTON DO YOUR FILLS. QUACKS!!! So where do I go from here?? Right now after I beat myself up I am doing nothing can’t afford it so I am trying on denial to convince myself that I have restriction. Any suggestions???
  3. It took me about 4 fills to really hit my sweet spot. Strict protein, no snacking, lots of fluids. I lost over 150#. Just had a baby and now working on the 40 I gained. Good luck and if you need to talk just MSG me or you can find me on FB. Melissa Archer Howell

    Thinspiration: Beth?s motivation

I have struggled with my weight for years, especially these last five or so, well I have committed to myself to lose the weight and keep it off this time, roller coastering is wearing down my system and alot of health issues keep coming up, so for me to continue the wonderful life I have currently and to be around for the future, I have made up my mind. I hope that each and everyone will be supportive with me not just because you asked but because you deeply care. No I don't want to be skinny, if that is what you asking, I want to be healthier: So I can go outside in shorts and not be embarassed by my fat thighs. So that I wont be ashamed by my imperfections. So that I wont be thought of as one of the statistics of obese America. So I will see a difference between myself months ago and myself minutes ago. So I will have confidence So my thighs wont touch when I sit down. So when I moisturize my legs they don't jiggle. So my breasts would be more perky. So I wouldn't have to look for a bigger size in the department store. So I wont have stretch marks. So that I wont be the sidekick to my beautiful friend So I can have higher self esteem. So I can motivate myself to achieve any goal I set my mind too. So that I can fit into a size small rather than an average mediocre medium. So when I put my jeans in the dryer I want have to worry if I can fit in them again. These are just a few of the things that come to mind. A few known people say wait til after the holidays, NOPE, I wanted to do it thru the holiday to prove to myselft I can avoid the tempation of splurging, once that tempation is gone, I will be well on my way to my success. and I have proven to myself I can.... **this was originally posted on myspace blog**

  6. Greetings Gastric Sleevers! My name is Jay. I am 45 years old and I have been Morbidly Obese my entire Life. Here is my story. I had a Work Physical in December 2006. When I stepped on the scale I weighed 326lbs. That was the most Obese I had ever been, and enough was enough. I had had it. I needed to do something drastic to stop the weight gain. I decided to have a Lab Band. At the time I didnt want to have any physical changes to my body, and people were having very good weight loss success on the Band. In February of 2007, I had my surgery. From February 2007 to September 2007 the band worked great!!! I weighed in at 207lbs. I was extremely happy!!! But sometime in September the tubing to the band developed a kink and then the tubing cracked and the band was worthless. March of 2008 I underwent my second surgery, this time it was a port and tubing replacement. Everything seemed fine until I went in for my first fill. When they tried to fill the band they werent able to. The tubing was kinked again!!! Are you F'ing kidding me? I had enough and was just going to do my best on what the surgeon had put in the band ( I think it was 9cc's). It wasnt enough, I started to gradually put on weight. In 2012 I had enough again. I went in to have the band filled under X-Ray Fluroscopy. For whatever reason the band took in 15 cc's The band I had was only supposed to hold 12. Needless to say the band was closed off, and I couldnt eat or drink anything. Two days later I had emergency surgery to release the band. The surgery went well, but the Surgeon didnt replace the band. When I went in for a fill they put in the Max CC's of 12. Guess what? No restriction. Yup in was stretched out so much it was ineffective again! I had had enough with the Lap Band, it was nothing but a big giant headache for me. I decided to have a Gastric Sleeve in 2015. I had my surgery on June 24th 2015. The day of the surgery I weighed in at 275lbs. Today is September 11th and I am down to 240lbs. I am very happy with my Sleeve, but the adjustment to the new diet was very hard for me. I am doing 3 Protein shakes a day and I added 1 KETO OS drink a day to my diet. It has made a huge difference. My energy levels are through the roof and I feel absolutely Fantastic!!! The weight is coming off twice as fast for me ( from 2 pounds a week to 4) I took the time to research this product and it is the best decision I have made in a long time. Awfully Sick at Time- 6 Weeks Out

Has anyone ever not lost weight from this surgery I am 5 weeks out and I have only lost 10lbs Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I am sorry I am new to the site and not sure where to ask questions Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. I sure wish my surgeon had told me that! I have lost 5 lbs since my surgery on 10/22 and my first fill is on 12/01. I have been feeling horrible for only having lost 5 lbs. I even started exercising and I eat around 1200 calories a day. My surgeon didn't say I wouldn't lose weight, but he also didn't say that I would. I just assumed once the band is in....
  9. I'm starting to get really frustrated about this surgery. During the pre-op phase, I lost 23 pounds, and the first three days after surgery, I dropped another 10. Since that point, I have either stayed the same or gained weight every single day. My fiance had the same surgery a week prior to me, and she is dealing with the same thing. I just don't get it. In diets of the past, if I had eaten this amount of food, I would have been dropping 5-10 pounds a week...but after the band, it's nothing. I was expecting rapid weight loss (and was pretty much guaranteed this by my Doctor, as long as I followed the guidelines, which I have), but at this point, I'm starving myself and eating foods that disgust me (protein shakes) for nothing. Has anyone else had these problems after the surgery? I understand the argument about swelling, but if that was the case, I would have gained in the days following surgery. I also understand plateau's, but this has been going on for 12 days now. I weigh almost 400 pounds and am surviving on less than 1000 calories a day...it's ridiculous.
  10. Hi all. I have not been on here for some months. Personal issues that I will not go into here, but I had my sleeve on 11/29/10. So far I am very happy with the way I feel. I was taking Lasix to get rid of excess fluid pre-surgery, but my dr. did not want me to continue it post surgery. I was alarmed at first, because, of course I started retaining fluid and actually put on 5 lbs, from surgery day through 5 days post op. He was right in his decision, because I would have been dehydrated had I taken it. With that said, after I lost that 5 lbs of fluid plus an additonal 10 lbs during week 2, there has been no further change in weight. On monday I will be 3 weeks post op. I have been getting in 64+ ounces of fluids, getting in all my required 60 grams of protein, walking 1+mile on the treadmill for a week now with no further change. Am I doing something wrong, or is this normal?
  11. Hi everyone. I'm 45 years old, 5'8" and pushing my highest weight ever at 295. BMI 44. I was a thin and active child and teen. After college I started a sedentary job and had a baby a year after that. Gained 60 pounds while pregnant and that was 20 years ago! Over last 20 years I steadily and slowly have gone up on the scale. I have done many diets over years with only small early losses but weight always finds me again plus some. My father died at age 43 from a sudden heart attack. At that time I was only 23 and was still at a healthy weight but now that I am obese and older than he was it is a severe fear of mine. In fact I have always had anxiety anytime my heart rate goes up even from daily things like climbing stairs or vacuuming the house. This is probably one reason I don't exercise. Anyway my mom had a few friends that have had some success with Lap Band and she has begged me to consider it but I've kept thinking no way my insurance would ever pay for it. Well recently I called my insurance and they WILL cover it if I meet all their requirements. I do meet them all now except the recent 6 months doctor supervised diet. I did WW within last year but dang it I only lasted 4 months that time before I gave up! My insurance assigned me a case worker advocate and I have my first phone interview on Monday afternoon. I also have a physical scheduled for next Friday with my PCP because I am clueless of my cholesterol or blood sugar. And I will ask for his support and recommendation as well. I have done a lot of research online and read a couple eBooks and I'm actually leaning toward vertical sleeve now as opposed to Lap Band. It seems to have better long term results and fewer long term complications after getting past the initial surgery and leak test. Plus the foreign object inside me forever w LB kind of freaks me out. My husband supports me but has never had a weight issue so he doesn't get why it has to come to this for me. Nobody besides my hubby and mom know yet that I'm considering this. Not even my son yet. Anyway that's my story. Journey about to take off.

    Weakness when exercising

When I am exercising sometimes I get real weak all of a sudden, almost faint:w00t:. I am trying to lose alot of weight of course (150 lbs) or more. Right now I weigh about 357. I just bought a bike and want to ride ALOT. But, I am afraid of having an "episode":scared2: while I am far from home. I wonder if the problem is a lack of calories. I am eating about 1000 calories per day, per doctors orders. Isn't that too little. Or am I just that out of shape or what. Maybe I just need to continue and it will get better. But I just wanted to get others feedback. Thanks
  13. I was sleeved dec1. I am only down 8 lbs since surgery. I thought the weight would just drop off. I guess I fantasized that I would be down 30 lbs the first month, but it's not going to happen. I have lost a ton in inches though. I just keep telling myself to be patient. At least we all are "losers" though. : )
  14. Ok so here it is: a quick bit about me I am 35 Wife and mother, 5'4" and 270 lbs that puts my BMI at 46.3 or very close to that. I like most have dieted and lost weight repeatedly only to gain it back plus some. I do not have a sweet tooth, I am an overeater, I just like feeling full. I've done some soul searching as suggested and other than the physical and contentment from feeling full there is no real other psychological reasoning behind this. I love food like most and that's about it. I also love working out believe it or not .... however I do not enjoy it at this weight ... I loved it when I was a smaller me. I have asthma and have been treated with steroids in the past and my argument to my insurance is that I would like to leave this option open if I ever need to use them in the future. With RN&Y you cannot take steroids period. Stomach cancer also runs in my family so having a shadow stomach just left floating in there might not be the greatest idea. I have done my research and that's what I am continuing to do now so please just don't tell me to research. I feel that the VSG best suits me and my needs. I don't want to worry about malnutrition and deficiencies as much as you do with the RN&Y. I don't really want to mess with the openings to and from my stomach nor have my intestines all pulled out of whack. I would like to hear from you, your feelings and experiences on the VSG or RN&Y. I know that my center is going to push the RN&Y and I will have to stand up for what I really want. I know or I've read that you don't loose the weight at quickly with a VSG as per the RN&Y but I am patient as long as it comes off no difference if it's a year or a year and a half. I love healthy food so I really think this could work for me. Please Respond, I am a girl of quantity and do need much reassurance and input. Thanks a bunch, Micki

    VSG or RN&Y

Thanks Kelly and Leila for your responses. I do wish there was more long term information on VSG however I read through some long term information for the RN&Y and it scares the heck out of me. Leila that is great weight loss for 12 weeks, how is eating for you now as opposed to before the surgery?
  16. Rev Me Up!

    Am I on track?

As you will hear, this is a highly individual process. 12 pounds sounds great!! Now, be sure to prepare yourself because you are on the cusp of your first stall. The 3-5 week stall makes a lot of people crazy. Your body drops this initial weight and then stops to take a breath :-) I lost around 10 punds in the first week and then a couple of pounds for the next 3 weeks. Now I average 2 pounds a week. I am slow, but I also started at a lower BMI because I had a lap band before. Hang in there and focus on your food-- Lara
  17. I asked tons of questions... Besides their stats on leaks/death I asked the following. Is the surgeon around after hours if a leak is found at the ER? If he thinks the sleeve is right for me? Hospital stay? If they use a drain? Size they use, since it can be anywhere from a 28-40? How long before I can pick up my kids? What has he seen as far as complications and their protocol? How much weight I should expect to lose? If they allow gas X and mouth spray post op? If they do a leak test? I know I asked a lot more but I don't have the paper in front of me.
  18. When I started my weight loss odyssey, I was doing so blind so to speak. The surgeons office I was seeing at the time, the scale didn't go past 550. So I was looking around and came across the site below. I purchased their XL-700 scale and have been using it since to get my weekly weigh in results. It's a great scale and has been a great help to me. I was able to see my weekly losses and gain a confidence boost each week seeing the weight go down. So if you're in the market for a scale this is a good company to look at. They have quite the variety of bariatric scales, and they're affordable. http://www.oldwillknottscales.com/obesity-bariatric-scales.html **I am NOT affiliated with the website.**

    Staywell

Staywell requires you to have a 6mts weight management program. Does it have to be consecutive? Or can it be 6 month visit in the last 2 years? I called the insurance company but they couldn't give me that information.

    How I maintain

Thanks Kate! Actually I had the bypass then the sleeve. Not bypass, sleeve, bypass. I know. It's a little weird. I have a sleeve now. What contributed to my anorexia was that I already had an eating disorder before i had surgery and the surgery made me worse. Having been anorexic in my past the wls made it easy to be again. And I took it too far. And I relapsed. It was bound to happen. Having a bypass and then converting to a sleeve contributed to me having a severe stricture for almost a year. Those surgeries created a ton of scar tissue. I also had an exploratory, my gallbladder out, and an endoscopy. I ran the gamut. But my eating disorder was there before surgery and sooner or later I would have had to deal with it. I'd say 99% of people who are obese have an eating disorder of some sort. The surgery can most definitely help but also worsen those issues. Most people regain weight because they still have disordered eating and then their wls restriction lessens after time, they go back to their old behavior, namely, dieting. Which causes weight gain. And the whole cycle begins again. No one fails at wls. They fail to address their disordered eating. That's the real issue here. Your way sounds good. As long as you don't feel deprived... then it sounds like you've managed to find stability and happiness. That's what matters.

Anyone Denied based on psych eval?

I've heard stories of people committing suicide after having bariatric surgery. They think that losing weight will make all their problems go away and of course they don't. So I would think this may be the insurance company's way of saying they checked before approving the surgery. The eval I had about 200 of the 300 questions were about my mental state and about being suicidal.

    Surgery canceled

Don't give up. It took me almost a year to finally get the insurance to approve the surgery. I was so surprise when I got the call it had been approved. I rushed the surgery just in case they decided to change their minds. The weight was worth it. I was banded on Oct. 3, 2008 and I have lost 49.5 lbs. Don't give up. It will happen. Just try and not gain anymore until you have been approved. I'll be praying for you and that the insurance company approves you soon. Lone Star Loser

    Is It Just Me?

When I was on my six month diet I lost a grand total of 12 pounds. The first month, my NUT seemed a little annoyed that I had only lost three pounds in a month's time. But at the end of the six months she admitted to me that she was thrilled that I took it more seriously than most...LOL! I don't know about you, but I was really upset that I had to go through that in the first place. I had lost and then regained on more diets than I can even count. That was the whole reason I was going for the surgery in the first place. Obviously eat less and exercise more were not working for me. I know that insurance companies need to make sure you are truely committed to a change in lifestyle, but I seriously doubt that there are too many people that just wake up and suddenly notice they are fat and immediately run to surgery. Okay, my rant is over. I enjoyed a little good bye tour wtih food during the two months between my last NUT visit and my pre-op diet while waiting for insurance approval. I gained two pounds and then got really serious for my two week pre-op. I lost 15 and was fully ready for surgery. As predicted, I find it much easier and am much more motivated to stick with the plan now that I am sleeved!

    Is It Just Me?

Didn't experience this myself (the benefits of self-pay) but wanted to chime in and say that you're not alone. I've seen this posted before. I completely agree with actingnurse - honestly, why on earth would yet another diet make the big difference and somehow prove that cutting out 85% of your stomach is going to be successful? I half think they do it simply to get people to drop out and not have the surgery! The good things you can do in this time (and I wouldn't fret too much about losing, only be careful not to gain) are work on some of those emotional things that have helped us get/remain overweight. Try to pay attention to your eating habits and avoid overeating. This is something you'll have to do at some point so why not start now? And if you're at least tracking your calories, you're building a good habit that will help you achieve success post op. Good luck. If 1,200 calorie diets and extra exercise worked for everyone, none of us would have surgery. We'd be sporting skinny bods from our first round of Weight Watchers! ~Cheri
