Trouble with lack of hunger! Protein overload!
BLERDgirl replied to VDB's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
There is Protein in nearly everything. I am vegetarian. I do supplement with my morning shake but I get most of my protein from food. I eat greek yogurt, cheese, nuts, Beans, dark green veg, fruit and whole grains. This week I am using something I called green base. It's 3 cups of raw kale, 1 cup frozen spinach, 1/8 cup almond slivers, 1/2 apple blended in the vitamix and poured into ice cube trays. I use 2 cubes per servings. It's only 3 gms of protein but loads of Fiber and Vitamins. I then added 2 ice cubes of orange juice, 1 small orange. 1/2 cup greek yogurt, 1 scoop Isopure unflavored Protein Powder. I drink half before and half after my workout. It's 36 gms of protein. lunch is Explore Asian - Organic Mung Bean Pasta. I'll probably add some sauteed veg with it. 3oz is 38gms of protein. I'll have some nuts for an afternoon snack. A salad with an egg for dinner. A lot of nutritionist tell you to stop Protein drinks because they want you to focus on eating whole foods. I told mine I was never a breakfast person and I always my a Protein Drink for breakfast. She seemed okay with it since I eat regular meals otherwise. I did go through a period where I wasn't interested in food at all. I just went through the motions to meet my protein goals. However for the most part I enjoy being creative and making nutritious things to eat. It makes it easier to continue to make this part of my lifestyle. -
I didn't puree anything either. I had a scrambled egg (which were allowed by my plan in the puree phase) daily, Protein shakes at least once a day, and greek yogurt every day. Not much variety- but at that point I really didn't care, I was just happy not to have shakes all day long!

I make up a batch of protein Greek yogurt at the beginning of the week and have some each evening, usually with a tablespoon or two of low-sugar granola or crushed nuts.

A few things: 1) If you are unclear on what the doctor or nurse has said, you need to tell them that. It is their job to make sure you understand. Ask them for specific examples. 2.) The folks here have posted some suggestions but you have to try. I did some things in the nutra bullet, but mostly I made things up according to my taste buds. My handbook sites examples such as a soft scrambled egg for breakfast., a Protein shake mid morning, 4 tbsp. of tuna fish for lunch, 4 tbsp of chicken for dinner and a shake in the evening. Here's how I make my soft scrambled egg: I take 1 egg, tsp of plain greek yogurt (I use Fage 0%), I whip that together and top it with a bit of shredded cheddar. I either cook it on the stove in no stick pan stirring constantly or I pop i in the microwave for 1 minute. If microwaving it will be a bit under done when you take it out. Stir it together and pop it back in for another 10 seconds then chec to bring out and stir again. You want all of your food at this stage to be fairly moist. You might add some broth to any meats you puree. If they are too dry they may be difficult to swallow and digest.

5 months out- going to do a 3-5 day shake fast-any advice?
mi75 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all- I am about 5 months out now, doing great, but the scale has really slowed. I've been told this is normal, but my 'honeymoon period' is coming to an end, and i still have about 25 lbs to lose until goal. After reading a lot online, I decided to try a shake/broth/yogurt type fast for at least a few days. Something similar to my pre-op diet. I am wondering if that will get the scale moving again? Any advice? -
I did not do a pre-op diet other than 2 days of Clear liquids before surgery day. I was not hungry at all for the first four days and after day five started to increase my fluids, since I was on clear liquids at that point. But my calorie intake the first two weeks was probably between 300 and 700 calories. I have mostly followed the Dr.'s recommendations regarding post op diet and have worked hard to keep my calories very reasonable ( between 800 and 1000 daily). I do track my calories most days, partly track my Protein. I had two atkins shakes today ( 30 gms of protein) and a lean cuisine that had salmon ( must had had some protein, but didn't check how much) Also had a yogurt and that has some protein (9gm, I think). so i know I'm close to getting enough protein. Some days I'm hungrier than others and I do believe the band, even without restriction is giving me some restriction OR like others I'm just used to dieting... not sure. But I totally agree on the issue of keeping the weight off this time. First goal get it off, second keep it off.

Thanks everybody! I'm doing better. Jen, I think I was dehydrated, even though I was drinking alot. The added protein shakes and yogurt made an amazing difference.

This is the first time that I have experienced this feeling and I'm assuming its a reaction. I ate 4 oz of frozen yogurt for lunch. 155 calories, no big deal. Right? Wrong. I feel SO SICK. I am nauseous, I have a headache, and I feel shaky. I'm barely keeping the frozen yogurt down, but I'm debating just letting myself throw it up for relief. I have experienced sliming, but this is 100x worse! Any thoughts?

What is a typical meal like for someone with the sleeve 4-5 months after surgery?
Bufflehead replied to Savannah Lee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was 2 oz lean meat + 1 oz green veggies (soft), or a poached egg over a couple tablespoons of refried beans, something like that. Or 3oz yogurt or cottage cheese. -
When do we stop focusing on food?
Read2016 replied to girl4god77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think the focus on planning food will never end... As a teacher we have a saying if you don't plan for kids, they'll plan for you... I kind of see it the same way with food, if you don't plan your meals you will wind of making poor choice.. I do believe the longer you follow high Protein eating the easier it will be and as you move along in the process you will find more and more sources of protein..600 calories does not sound healthy to me.. During my trip to traders joe yesterday, I found hemp seed... 10grams of protein per serving, good for adding to yogurt etc... 3 months post op & discouraged!!
finallyonmyway replied to neverland's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Everyone, I was banded 9/1/06 and have lost 10 pounds post-op. How many calories should I be eating? It sounds like some of you eat a lot. I've been writing down everything I eat and have been averaging about 600-700 calories per day with solids like yogurt and cottage cheese now in my 3rd week. I have to admit that hearing some of the stories about no restriction and being able to eat whatever I want is scaring me a bit. I want this band to work for me, so I realize it's just a tool, that I have change my lifestyle. Still - a scary thought that it might not work. Appreciate any thoughts on this. -
I'm new here...any suggestions!
GreenEyedMamma replied to MollyMc's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Wow, your pre-op diet is nice. Mine was full liquids for two weeks. Nothing but Protein shakes, crystal light, only greek yogurt and that was only every few days, sugar free popcicles and sugar free pudding. I am VERY glad I did it though because it made a HUGE difference after surgery. I got all of my withdrawls out of the way within the first four days of the pre-op diet. Since you will be on liquids for a minimum of one week (some surgeons require two or more) before you are allowed mushies the liquid diet before surgery makes a nice transition. Once you get past the first four or five days things are much easier. Just stick to it. I found the afternoons were much harder than any other time of the day so I chewed a TON of gum and had to shake up my routine at work. You can do it! Congrats on your upcoming surgery. You will not regret it at all. You'll look back on the two weeks you were on the pre-op diet and think nothing of them. -
I'm taking the Greek yogurt and light&fit yogurt.

Am on day 18 today 6/23/13 and was upgraded to purée on 6/20. I thought that I would love the upgrade but the thought of cooking or making something soft and end up eating two or three spoon is tiring for me. So, I'm sticking with my pudding, yogurt and protein shake especially at work. I tried ice cream at work today out of greed I guess and it just came back up when I'm almost at the last spoon. Any ideas on something interesting that I can make/cook without filling the whole pot? By the way, I'm not impressed with the amount of weight that I have lost so far. Only 10 lbs from my surgery weight on my 2nd week. My coworkers are noticing the inches lost but I'm not. I still look the same even though I walk before lunch and after work. Any words of encouragements? Thanks all for listening.

The soft food stage does by really quickly, so don't sweat it too much. Didn't your doctor's office give you a list? Mine gave me a whole binder of what to eat when through each stage, etc. Basically it's cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, protein shakes, yogurt, soup, jello, sugar-free pudding, and things like that.

The soft food stage felt like it went very quickly for me. I depended on eggs quite a bit, starting with just plain scrambled eggs. Then I started introducing in spices and other things like cheese. I was very concerned that I wouldn’t tolerate spices, but that never seemed to bother me. I also ate a lot of refried beans. I couldn’t stand the thought of tuna, although I liked it just fine pre-op. I purreed some baked chicken thighs with yogurt (or possibly sour cream?). Sounds disgusting, but tasted and looked fine. I’m sure there are some recipes out there, but it was kind of a pain in the butt to prepare and very bland. I think chopping it up very finely and carefully chewing would have achieved the same effect. Towards the end of the soft foods stage I started eating boiled shrimp - just making sure that I chewed it carefully. I am 5 months from surgery now, and I still prefer dark meat chicken and shrimp. I can eat white meat, hamburger, turkey, pork, ham and steak, but dark meat chicken always feels much easier on my tummy. Good luck! I’m sure you’ll do well.

How the Pre-op Diet is Feeling Post-op
Cariboom replied to alwaysvegas's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're the same date as me and it sounds like our plans are roughly the same. I have drank too fast a couple times and now know what "full" feels like. I am not sure that I am craving or hungry per-se, but my body feels like it wants something but doesn't know how to tell me what that is. Not having problems with fluids whatsoever, thank goodness. I am looking for a savory or at least less-sweet option and plain custard sounds really good right now. We're allowed yogurt and very soft things on day 7, so I am looking forward to trying some. -
Hi, I'm scheduled for my surgery this Monday. Having a terrible time with the protein shakes. I have tried Unjury and GNC I get them down then they come right back up! Tonight I decided to go through my paperwork for day before surgery list of what I am allowed to eat. As I looked I notices that the 2 week liquid diet does not have yogurt or oatmeal on it BUT the day before surgery it's on the list?? Does that make sense to anyone? I would be doing fine with my protein if I could be eating Greek yogurt!!! I called my doctors office but they are closed until tomorrow.

Feeling good...can I start the next stage diet?
audefacere replied to audefacere's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've emailed my NUT about starting early with my pureed stage (I still haven't heard from her). I'm not looking to have pizza or burgers though if you're able to stomach them then more power to ya. I would love to introduce some eggs or pureed chicken so I can fulfill my Protein requirement. My NUT doesn't recommend Protein shakes so my protein intake is coming only from milk, yogurt, and other natural protein sources. Thanks for everyone's concerns but I will follow what my NUT until she says otherwise. I just wanted other's opinions. -

For purée I liked chili a lot, refried beans with ff sour cream, cheese, salsa, I did meatballs with spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce/cheese of your choice, then there's easy things that are already purée consistency applesauce, mashed potatoes, Greek yogurt, ff pudding, protein shakes. Good luck!! You can purée almost anything. -
