  1. Yesterday I saw my surgeon for my pre-op. About 3 weeks ago I was having some blood pressure and irregular heart beat issue. My surgery is scheduled for October 21. My echocardiogram was normal but the results from the holter monitor were not back yet. He let me keep my date but said if the slightest thing pings on the holter he will reschedule my surgery. I'll find out for sure on Friday when I see my PCP. He believes the issues were caused by a new medication I had started 3 days before the problems started. Since then I have stopped the meds and have not had any problems. Anyways he gave me instructions leading up to surgery. He told me I do not need to do the 2 weeks pre-op diet. I just need to do a 24 hour liquid diet the day before surgery. I've lost 20 pounds during this process, I started out at 250. I am now 230. He told me to keep the 20 lbs off and continue to try and lose more. If I gain even a pound he will cancel my surgery. I'm over here kinda panicking, I terrified I'll gain bc it will be right before my period and my weight fluctuates about 3 pounds every month. Once I start the weight falls right back off. He also said I need to start tracking everything I eat and drink. So what are your pre-op directions?
  2. YES!!! I think that is a big milestone. When you think about "weight limits" often times 250 is quite the barrier. Most rides, waterslides, etc. will post a weight limit warning "no one over 250", etc. So yes, you need to celebrate that you are below the 250 mark!! Woo hoo!

    3-month surgiversary

I hear ya on people getting tired of updates on the weight loss. I gradually stopped texting my core group of supporters daily (not about weight specifically-- anything interesting I've experienced) cause I figured they were growing wary of it. I now only update them once a month with photos. Keep evaluating where you are and how you are responding to experiences on your journey and adjust accordingly. This is what I think evolves in great maintainers.

    3 month Program with Nutritionist

I also have aetna & I wasnt required to loose weight. My weight went up 1 lb.
  5. I had my gallbladder removed about 10 months before getting sleeved. I gained about 38 lbs in those months and the weight gain didn’t seem to be slowing down so WLS was a must at this point. Comparing the two, I feel like I had less pain with the WLS. I actually asked my mom if she was sure they even did anything! 1. I didn’t need any painkillers after WLS, but I took them for about a week after gallbladder removal. 2. I’m typically a stomach sleeper and was also able to go back to sleeping on my stomach faster after the sleeve. 3. i only needed to sleep on a recliner for 2 days after WLS, but slept in a recliner for about 10 days after gallbladder removal. 4. Moving around was also easier for me after the sleeve, mainly because I felt like I couldn’t stand up straight after the gallbladder removal. 5. I was sleepier after the sleeve and generally had less energy the first week. 6. I had a bowel movement faster after WLS and going to the bathroom was easier in general. 7. TMI but I had sex sooner after WLS than I did after gallbladder removal. 8. Oh, my surgeon used my main gallbladder removal incision (the top one) so I only had 2 new tiny incisions for a total of 3 incisions for WLS. He felt like it was unnecessary for me to have more scars than I should so maybe that’s an individual thing that differs from surgeon to surgeon so I’d ask if that was possible. I only have the 3 WLS incisions visible and the gallbladder ones were so tiny they disappeared (you can only see them if you know where to look). So all in all I’d say my recovery from the sleeve was easier than the gallbladder removal, but of course that’s just me. I’m sure other people have it the other way around. Either way, you can do it! For me, the hardest step was actually deciding and committing to the WLS. Don’t worry, you got this!! Please feel free to message me if you feel like you have more questions or if I missed anything.

    4.20 cc's in my 4 cc Band

Yep. He doesn't seem to be concerned at all. I've read before on other Bandster boards where somepeople have to be filled this high and the band can actually hold more then 4 cc's. I just happen to be the unusual one. I'm sure it is not crimping my stomach as I have no problem eating and the doc would have seen the tightness in the video esophogram. I don't have a big stomach when you look at me so maybe my weight loss was from my innerds and that's why the band needs to be so full. LOL Just a thought!
  7. i thought this as well i think they have done marvelous what ever way they have lost weight but add me as a doubting thomas:rolleyes

    Weight loss time

Tshine01 I'm just curious where you are at now. Has a date been set yet for your surgery? Are you still going strong with your pre surgery plan? Talk to us lady! I hope and pray all is well with you. Don't you dare lose your resolve during this long wait! My conspiracy theorist part of me can't help but wonder if insurance companies torture bariatric patients with this long wait hoping they'll give up the dream of normal weight. Don'tcha dare do it!

    Weight loss time

The average weight loss range is 1/2 to 1 lb/day. You are in the upper range. That's fantastic.
  10. For the last 3 weeks I would go up and down about a pound on the scales. I got pretty bummed. I finally took it all out at the gym on my body on Monday. I walked on the treadmill at a pace of 4.0 and did two miles then I went to bikes and did another 4 miles. I was so worn out I came home and passed out. I woke up the next morning (Tuesday) and had lost a pound and half. Today I weighed myself again and had lost 0.8 lbs. I am now 10 lbs away from my first big reward of an hour massage!!! I can not wait till I hit the 199 mark!!! I have not felt this good, energetic, and happy in years. I have already gotten rid of all my fat clothes and just bought some leggings until I can get down to closer to where I want to be. As an added bonus, my hubby was rubbing my shoulders yesterday and said "you have nothing here anymore, it is all bone" which made me feel good also!!! I can finally see the changes in my body after losing 50 lbs!! BTW: surgery was on June 15 Starting weight 260 Surgery weight 245 Today 210

    Plantar fasciitis post op

My doctor and I traced my battle back to some blisters which turned out to be excema. The blisters altered how I was walking and that led to extra strain on the PF. That became about a year of drugs, stretching, night Splint, physical therapy, 2 cortisone injections, and shoe inserts. So I would look at how you are walking-your gait. Weight loss may have changed your balance or the way you move and that is causing the PF problems. Stretch as much as you can as often as you can. And I wish I did the first cortisone injection when the Dr first suggested. I wanted to try other methods first but that cortisone really made a difference.
  12. I am in the 6 month process and have a BMI of 35. I have elevated BP, high cholesterol and high triglycerides with no meds. I worry about the cholesterol and triglycerides and BP and follow a heart healthy diet with no results (in my labs or my weight). My question is has anyone had luck with severe back pain as a co- morbidity- or did it help. Honestly when I think about why I am ultimately having the surgery is the relief of my back pain. It is AWFUL. Thanks in advance:)
  13. Whatever you decide cook WAY less. If you eat out, eat off some one elses plate. You will be able to eat mashed potatoes or candied yams. Getting it done just before the holidays might sound tough, but look at the bright side- no holiday season weight gain this year. Also, I started to feel a lot better with more energy about the 1 month, so although the food experience will be much different, you should still be able to enjoy good company. Good luck!

    Stuck

Trust me when I say that your body will MAKE YOU fight to be in One-derland. Try eating super high calories in one day. As .many as you can..this tends trick.your body into thinking its nolonger I starvation and you should see a decline in weight the following day. Also... Try and cut out any breads, Pasta, rice and sugar until you break the stall. Also... Enter your food into an app like MyFitnessPal. Maybe your carbs are too high. Just a few suggestions. ~Leticia **HW: 259**PreOp: 216**SURG: 3/21/13 **Discharged @: 221** 3 mons post op. CW: 165.0 lbs. --- Only 15 lbs to my goal ---

    6 Year Post-Op Need Support

Hi Mel I’m also 6 year post op and I, too, have gained 15 lbs. Had an interesting conversation with a friend today who said the opposite of addiction is not sobriety, but connection. Could that be true for you? Are you missing some kind of connection in your life? I think for me, it might be connection to my body. I tend to live in my head, and take my body for granted. Hope you find a way through this dark time. Take care of yourself.

Motivation and Awareness for the long haul

I have been maintaining for awhile. Here is my mindset...goal weight isn't the "end" it is more like the beginning of the REAL challenges. While I do eat more, and follow rules less strictly than I did during the weight loss phase, I still strongly identify as someone who is actively managing weight, fitness and health. I still set goals, I weigh for accountability, I have non scale related goals and victories, I surround myself with active fitness oriented people, etc. This is a fundamental shift for me from my old ways of thinking when I was either dieting and losing weight or not dieting and eating in a disordered way.
  17. I am working on my three month process...Calorie Counting and going to all my pre-op appointments. I am catching myself falling deeper into depression over my weight. I am constantly thinking about my weight, the surgery, the whole process and finding myself getting pretty emotional (at the most inconvienent of times). I am nervous, scared, and so forth. I keep thinking of my food addiction, can I really beat it? What if I fail? What if I don't like what I look like after I reach my goal weight? I see a lot of before and after photos and a lot of people look completely different. What if I loose all my friends? I am living in the land of what ifs and it is driving me crazy and since I am dieting I do not have my binge eating to cope with all the crazy. Am I loosing my mind??

    Help :( overfill?

I thought all the same things when I was too tight...it will go down as soon as I lose some weight...I don't feel like driving back to my doc (5 hours away) to get .1 cc out, it will loosen up, etc. I ended up ignoring the reflux, the not eating, the throwing up and I irritated my stomach so badly that after SEVEN MONTHS of this (yeah, that's how goofy I was) I went back and had to get a complete UNFILL! Talk about terrifying! Had to let my stomach rest and take prevacid for 30 days. After 6 weeks of healing, I was fine and started back up on fills. I'm not at my optimum level yet, but am close now. DON'T be miserable and wait. Learn from my stupidity! If you are that restricted, it is miserable! I didn't even realize how bad I felt until I was unfilled and it was an instant cure! Call your doc!

    Help :( overfill?

I am in the same boat. Got a fill almost 4 weeks ago and can hardly eat anything, unless it's after 11pm. My coffee takes me about 2 hours to drink in the morning, and the same for my Protein shake for lunch. Around 11pm I can have about 1/2 cup of soft foods. This is my 3rd fill and the first time I've felt "true" restriction. I thought I had restriction before but I could eat well over 1 cup of food at a time as long as it wasn't bread. I was considering an unfill, but I know they say as you loose more weight your band will loosen up and I hate to get an unfill and then have to go get a fill again later. I keep hoping it will get better because I am uncomfortable most of the time-that lump in your chest feeling and instant headache. On a good note-lost 12 pounds in those few weeks. I'm going to try and stick it out for a few more weeks and hopefully I will feel better!
  20. G'Day All Well it is the 10th day since my surgery and currently loosing at 3 pounds a day average, a Lot more than I expected , doing fine getting in 100 grams Protein per day plus almost 100 oz Water. I know that this will slow down but I am under dr's orders due to the major damage my stomach had suffered from previous operations I am on 4 weeks of the clear Fluid diet, I think that I will loose fast for these 4 weeks atleast. I have been walking between 1 and 2 miles per day, since I got home 1 week ago. Surgery took 8 hrs to remove the old lap-band and repair all the damage to my stomach area, my Dr was so tired after it and still had another one to do after me, my op was at 11.30 am I was pushed into my room at 11.30 pm and he came by at 1 am to see how I was doing, he expected me to spend easter in hospital due to the long operation but to his and the staffs amazement I was up walking Thursday morning and showered , walked the ward 3 times thursday and again friday morning he came by with a smile saying are you ready to go home I said hell yes , the care there was the best I have ever had in a hospital the staff so friendly and caring. OK my Dr was Dr Cirangle from LAPSF and was operated on at California pacific medical center in sf. Ok wednesday was my 1 week post op check up and weigh in and in those 7 days post op I had lost 20 pounds from the weight I was in pre op. I'm loosing faster than I did with my lapband in 1999 and then I was loosing 2 pounds a day for 8 weeks, I may just loose weight fast I'm not sure but diets never worked like this and this I know was the best choice ever I have made in my life. Cheers Malcolm

    Decisions , Decisions

A lady I knew was 38 bmi and was lucky enough not to have co-morbidities but of course that meant her surgery wasn't covered. She wore ankle weights under trousers. Not recommending it but just saying its silly that theres this magic cut off for 40 than say 37 For me - I got them to measure my height again and i had always put myself as 5 ft 5 when it turns out I'm just over 5 ft 3. Makes a huge difference in your BMI. We always tend to think we are taller and weigh less than we do. In WLS doesnt pay to do either! Best of luck - I'm hoping to do my VSG in March Please God after baby comes in January. Hopefully UHC will still be approving it then

    Hubby has questions

The hospital will give you discharge instructions for things to look for that may indicate you need to call your doctor. Agree that DH just needs to be supportive and keep trigger foods out of the house!! There may be a day or two that you question what you have done to yourself -- this is perfectly normal and passes quickly! One thing DH might need to be aware of if he has any weight issues: Tell him NOT to eat all the food you're no longer eating. My poor DH started doing that as soon as I was back on normal food and now his weight had gone up quite a bit!

    Weight loss time

Proud Grammy you are so right! My expectations are too high. It's like being on a diet before surgery, not eating a Hershey bar one day and wondering how much weight I lost. Totally unrealistic I know. ???? Postop I have been to some meetings at NYP but there were no ds'rs so I might try Lenox Hill. Thanks for the advice!
  25. So encouraged after today. They said I was the most educated patient they had seen. This is due to this site! Thanks to all for sharing. I also learned I have mild sleep apnea. This of course will be eradicated after surgery. So now just working on insurance requirements-- which is the worst part of all of this. I was told today that 3 % of the people who lose weight on their own maintain their loss. 80% of the people who lose weight with the sleeve maintain their loss. AMAZING, I want those odds!
