  1. I was 275 pounds in 2012. I was overweight, unhealthy, pre-diabetic. I did the Sleeve in Tijuana. My goal was to get down to 200. This morning, I was 193.8. I got the weight off, and have kept it off for 9 years. It works! If you consider it and treat it as a life change, it works. For 9 years, I have done my protein shakes twice a day. I do not eat carbs....I work out. I get full, I stop eating. I am 61 and my doc says I have the bloodwork of a man in his 30s. The first picture was a month before surgery. July 2012. The second picture was recent. April 2021.

I am not experiencing this but wanted to say I’m sorry you are struggling and glad to hear that you are getting treatment. May I ask, are you post weight loss surgery? Was this a new development after the surgery?? If not, do you feel like they just missed it during the psych evaluation or did you hide it well. I am post surgery and suffer from emotional eating and they missed it on the psyc evaluation so I am currently seeing a specialist (racing the clock getting help before my tool stops working). i just wonder how often these things are missed during the screening? It doesn’t seem to be at all standardized because the first place I called said that I needed to be there an hour early to take written tests and I found another that could get me in sooner and I didn’t do any written tests. Maybe the tests would have caught it? Anyways, i hope you find someone who is in your same situation and wish you the best of luck in your treatment.

“Too thin” is all relative. You won’t know at what weight will look “too thin” to YOU, until you get there, and when you do, it’s generally quite easy to stop (just eat more or more higher calorie stuff).. To date, I have only read of exactly ONE person on here who got BELOW normal BMI range and truly struggled to stop losing weight (and i’ve been on here for almost 3 years). Most peeps stuggle got to get/keep the weight off. Granted, i’ve read of people who lost a few more pounds after entering maintenance, but I don’t think anyone was truly unhappy about it for very long (i’e., weight came back or they just ended up liking being thinner). Personal anecdote: I got to normal BMI range and stopped before I reached my original goal of 120 as I too felt like i was looking too thin at 127. Ended up losing a bit more, but not because the lbs were just melting off by itself, but because it took me a couple months to transition from consuming weight loss calories to consuming maintenance calories (like breaking a habit, physically AND mentally). Eventually I stopped at 115, and have been sitting here (+/- 5lbs) for over 2 years. Funny thing is I think (and others agree) that I looked waaaaay more drawn and gaunt immediately after weight loss phase at 127 than I do today at 115 (i think it’s because of the carbs, lol) Good Luck! ❤️

    What if

honestly, there are a LOT more people who never make it to goal than there are those who make it. And only about 10-15% make it to a normal BMI (most people who are successful end up in the "overweight" or "class 1 obese" category (which is WAY better than being 100 lbs or more overweight!)) if you're one of the ones who makes it that far, though (and some of us do....), you can always stop the loss by increasing your calories. I was one of the ones who made it to a normal BMI, and my loss just sort of stopped on its own. keep in mind that most of us experience a 10-20 lb rebound after hitting our lowest weight, so consider that if you feel like you're getting too thin. I eventually put on 20 lbs after hitting bottom, which in my case was a good thing. P.S. class 1 obesity is defined as a BMI of 30-34.9. So...not very obese. I started out around a 60 BMI, so I would have been totally happy if I'd even made it to that range!

    What if

I would venture to say that very few people will find that they are losing too much and have to make a real effort to stop. The averge WLS patient doesnt even necessarily make it below the “overweight” category on the BMI scale. Average weight loss is 60-70% of your excess body weight. You get this by subtracting the weight you should be from the weight you currently are and take 70 percent of that. That’s about how much you should lose. Now just subtract that number from what you weigh now and you will see if you lose the average amount what you should weigh. Having said that, several people on this site will tell you that they lost more or less than “average” (because it’s just a statistic) but I doubt there will be many that say they lost much more unintentionally.

    Help needed

Some people lose hair as a response to the trauma of surgery. It usually starts falling out about three months out and stops around 6 months (general timeline). It will grow back. Another hair-related thing that can happen is the de-pigmentation of your hair (i.e., it turns white). As catwoman7 said...it is your body. If you want to lose more weight, do so. A lot of times, once someone has reached a stable weight, what fat they have left will redistribute and make them look less gaunt/sickly/unbalanced. It takes time though.
  7. FutureSkyDiver

    What if

Once you reach your goal weight, if you are happy, you enter maintenance phase. You eat a few more calories to support your body. You should have a dietitian/nutritionist on your team who can help you decide what the appropriate number of calories is for weight loss, maintenance, etc. No one can really give you a number, because we are each different in our height, age, body composition, activity level, etc. Good luck with your surgery.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Good luck to everyone who is awaiting Gastric Sleeve surgery hope it all goes well for you all. Is there anyone on here who is a few years down the line? Is your appetite still curbed ? Are you still eating small portions ? Are you still taking vitamins and protein shakes? Has the weight kept off? Any new medical problems developed? Sorry for all the questions but this is life changing, major surgery and I have to be sure of what I'm committing to. All answers gratefully received. Thank you.

    Please Help, Advice Needed!

I had surgery in the same day as you and. Just went through a similar experience. I was stalled with no weight loss and gaining and losing the same pound or two for a week and a half. I just kept following my regimen and suddenly yesterday ai was down three pounds. I figured my body was just adjusting to the until weight loss and just trusted the process. That was really hard for me because on previous diets a stall like that would totally derail me. I am pretty proud of myself for sticking it through. My doctor said everyone's experience is different except for that first stall 3-4 weeks out. She said universally everyone experiences some sort of stall.
  12. Honeymoon glow. Ride it all you can, lose as much weight as you can, work hard to change your eating habits. Eventually, your old habits will come a knocking...be it in a few months or a few years....but working on these healthy changes is absolute key to longterm success. Great work! Keep at it!
  13. Hi there, I’m scheduled for August 18th. Scared? Heck yes! 14 day liquid diet and I have fell off wagon! But also think I have lost too much weight. I’m down to 164. I started my journey in January. I was 178lbs at 5’0 with pre-existing conditions. High bp, high cholesterol, GERD, and a large hiatal hernia. Liquid diet is killing me. I miss my sushi, shrimp fried rice! UUUURRGGHH! All alone in Houston

I can't make up my mind!

I drink black coffee and was never told anything about quitting. After my surgery I did start to drink coffee but just one cup. I did notice that I was feeling a lot of anxiety but think it was my body dealing with so many changes. I switched promptly to DeCaf and then Half Caf for about 3-4 weeks. After that I was full caffeine and I have two cups every morning without any issues. As far as getting over the fear of the surgery I really had to think through the realities of what I was dealing with because of being overweight (which was not a life long issue for me). Most of my adult life I maintained good weight with regular excercise and then BAM I stopped working out and used food as a way to deal with things in life and was terribly depressed. Thereafter I had diabetes, NASH and sleep apnea to name a few. Being overweight started for me in 2015 and it was the longest 5+ years of my life. Shows how truly damaging being over weight can be to the body in general. I have no regrets and am grateful for all the support I received during my decision process on this site from all the amazing people. We all share so openly here. I am down 68.2lb since my surgery. I still have about 26lbs to go before I hit my goal weight but I know I can do it! I feel so much better about myself, about life in general and enjoy doing things again. Wishing you the best of luck!

Well, thank you for the vote of confidence! I just mean that I lost more weight ‘pre-surgery’ than I am now, after surgery. I know it takes time, but the pace has changed so dramatically!

So...Very Happy with progress so far...went from 54 waist to 46 approaching 50 lbs of weight loss, sleep apnea is already gone. I find that I eat small portions 4-5x a day. The amount of food that is comfortable is approx 4 oz. Having to wait 1/2 hour to drink after eating is sometimes annoying but not overly so. Finding my way through the new way of living is challenging but acceptable. Dr Holover did a great job with my surgery and Mercy Hospital was a great place to get the sleeve. Only wish I did it 5 years earlier.
  17. Maybe you’re being more mindful because you know what awaits on the other side .. I too was losing weight more than usual. Granted I made adjustments like less bread, healthier swaps etc but I was just excited and more on it because i knew what was to come

Hi all! So nice to see so much activity on the thread! I was pleasantly surprised last week when I found out my program had changed their post-op guidelines and that I could officially move to all regular foods this week. It is so nice to eat food that has texture to it. My weight has been coming off at a nice pace. I'm officially 45 pounds down from my highest weight. I go out most nights for a 2-3 mile walk with my husband and dogs and find the walks are definitely getting easier. I still struggle to get my calories up to the 600 minimum they want me at, but, have been meeting my protein goals every day. My nutritionist seems most focused on my protein and as long as I'm meeting that she seems satisfied. I have a feeling the calories will figure themselves out as I get settled in my new normal eating. I did go out to dinner with my husband for the first time in months. It was a tiny bit stressful just figuring out what to eat. We went to our favorite Mexican restaurant and he was on "chip watch" and ensured they never made it to the table. We wound up ordering a single order of seafood fajitas. I put a couple shrimp, 2 pieces of crab, 2 scallops and a tiny bit of refried beans and guacamole. That was plenty for me and my husband had the rest. In the end it was nice to be able to go out and know that I could navigate a situation like that. Overall I am loving my success so far. I haven't had any issues and every food I eat seems to sit fine. I've even had foods I couldn't eat before that I find I can eat now, which, is a pleasant surprise. I have far fewer headaches, have fewer digestive issues, sleep better, have been getting rid of lots of clothes that are too big and just feel so much better all around. I'm excited about what the future holds and all the other things I will be able to do.
  19. I think your husband is being extremely selfish and has other reasons why he doesn't want you to get the surgery. Maybe he is self conscious and is afraid if you lose a lot of weight that he will lose you. Maybe bring that conversation up. If that is the reason, he needs to grow up, pull on his big boy pants and get over it. In ANY case he needs to grow up and get over it. It is his responsibility as a husband to take care of you regardless of his feelings. he can disagree but he MUST take care of you during and after the surgery or to be honest, he is not worth being with. Sorry for the bluntness, but it is really true.
  20. Thanks! I had no symptoms..no snoring, no waking up short of breath etc. We just found out from pre-op testing. I'm hoping that when I lose some weight and retest that I can go off it. It was just NOT helping me as I was coming out of anesthesia, not being able to fill my lungs with air because of the gas/diaphragm and to throw that on just had me panicky. But when it was off and I realized it was just from the gas it was better.
  21. I don't know why, but suddenly, since I made the decision to pursue VSG, weight loss is becoming easier. I haven't changed my diet too much, I don't think—I still eat a variety of food—but yesterday I put on a smaller size jeans and they buttoned with no tugging, and today at the gym I had to cinch my weight belt in another notch before doing strict presses. Reduction in stress corresponding to a reduction in cortisol? Unconsciously starting to wind down my overconsumption? Psychosomatic? Sleeping better? My body anxious to "repair" itself? I don't know which of those it is, but I'm not going to complain about it!
  22. I guess my guy is a 1 in a Billion these days. He is so super supportive & his only concern with this whole process is how hot I will look after a yearish. He is worried I will want to be with someone else & I keep reassuring him that is NOT the case. We have been together 24 years & Married 23. I am 46 & he is 51. No way do I want to start all over with someone else. Documented weight loss attempts!

My insurance has this requirement. In my paperwork from the Doctor, he stated in his write up that I had attempted these weight loss programs unsuccessfully and they accepted that as proof. You can also use the surgeon and the dietician for a period of time as a supervised weight loss program.

I can't make up my mind!

The question I would tend to ask would be if you are just losing the weight to get the knee surgery and then let it come back on or if you think you can keep it off to help your knee surgery work long term. Seems like a simple question, but that to me is the key. If you do not think you can continue losing the weight then you are wasting your time with the knee surgery. I have relatives and friends that have had knee surgery and end up in the same condition because their weight stayed high. Just a thought.

I get what you are saying albeit a little condescending. Unlike most people who are obese, I am quite healthy. I have normal glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol. I exercise very regularly and get around seamlessly. My sole focus is getting the weight off. I am sure that will bring me long term health improvements but right now, it is the weight that is of concern. I am sure there are others like me out there as well.
