Keeping my head up!
2muchfun replied to Gotchaby1's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Consider the 5:2 intermittent fasting diet if you do decide to go back to dieting? I altered it to be 4:3 for myself but I've found that intermittent fasting diets are much easier to tolerate than 7 days a week depriving. I had plateaued for 3 months and now have lost 15 lbs in 2.5 months with the IF method. -
Keeping my head up!
Gotchaby1 replied to Gotchaby1's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have went through 2 c-sections, and 2 other major abdominal surgeries and in no way needed two weeks of round the clock care. 2-3 days seems quite sufficient for this surgery as long as you get up and start moving as soon as possible! My friend had the gastric sleeve 4 months ago and was up and about within 3 days, and wanting to go back to work by the next week and she was larger than me. I'm just saying I would be one miserable you know what if I had to stay there that long! -

Waiting for Insurance Approval
doingitforme29 replied to DaisyBell's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well today I had a consult with a surgeon who specializes in bariatrics. I was weighed in at 229 lbs and a height of 5'4, which makes my BMI 39.3. Firstly, I've always been measured at 5'3. The surgeon stated I was a great candidate for the lapband procedure but stated my insurance would not pay because my bmi isn't 40. He stated my insurance requires my BMI to be 40 or 35 (with a co-morbidity) for the past three years. He did not see what could be done to help me qualify nor did he request to retrieve my medical records from my pcp or other physicians. I immediately contacted my insurance company and they stated they do not have to have pre authorization, but there's a possibility they may request info in the future and if they find it was not medically necessary, they would withdraw the benefit. My insurance company gave me the info for a doctor who has a 98% approval rate. I do not have any comorbidites other than asthma, very infrequent menstrual cycles, and infrequent high blood pressure. I spoke with the staff at the doctor's office my insurance company referred me to and she was very optimistic about being able to help get me approved. I prayed before I went in the doctor's office asking God to reveal the best option to me, I can't help but wonder if I'm going against God's answer to my prayer by seeking approval through another physician. Having this surgery is very important to me. It's something I have desired to do for the past three years. I really want this. I know of a lady who has the sleeve and was denied twice before she received approval. How often do people get approved after being denied. I wasn't denied by my insurance company. The doctor simply didn't try seek approval from my insurance. The moment the calculated my BMI and saw that it was 40, they were pushing me to finance the procedure. Advice anyone. What should I do? How do I get my insurance to pay? -
I know it's easier said than done, but try not to get too nervous. For me, being prepared, and reading up on the surgery and what to expect helped a lot. I had laproscoptic gall bladder surgery awhile ago, and I didn't have any problems with the residual gas, so I was surprised when I kept reading about people having problems with it. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't have any real issues with the gas after my lap band surgery last week either. I was gassy and I felt bloated, but I didn't have shoulder pain or anything like that. I took a few Gas X pills after a day or two, but all in all, it wasn't even remotely painful. Maybe you'll be lucky too.

I have to be honest with myself and my lapband family. I have been cheating for the last 2 weeks and it shows, I started working out and I found my appetite increased from where it was which would not be a problem if i ate the correct foods but my sweet tooth got the best of me and the double chocolate chip cookies from wholefoods became by vice. I have now put back on 7lbs eating junk oh and i justified by saying well I'm working out and it muscle weight (just lying to myself I know) so I decided to come clean and make a new start today so I can move on. So now that I told on myself I feel better. Thanks for listening.

So it's been six weeks since my surgery, and I can't wait to get my first fill. This is truly Bandster Hell and I am so frustrated I could scream!! I haven't felt any restriction since the second week after my surgery. I don't think I've lost as much as I thought I would by this point. I dropped 10 lbs before surgery and probably another 18 or 19 lbs since then. I know, I know -- everyone is different, but my stomach growls SO much and I'm trying so hard to stick to a healthy food plan. Not being able to drink liquids with my meals has been a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. I went out to dinner last week with a girlfriend, and the waiter couldn't believe that I didn't want any water. "Are you sure?" he kept asking. "Can I get you something else, like tea or coffee?" I know he was trying to be helpful, but really -- no means no. Anyway, thanks for letting me vent. It does help...

Feeling good...can I start the next stage diet?
Forsythia replied to audefacere's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You don't want to jump ahead to purees anyhow. They suck hard. FWIW, I was on purees immediately upon coming home from the hospital per my plan. Purees were the longest week of my life. Lol. -

Getting A Cold Post Op
LunarScorpio replied to therealme89's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor gave me the O.K. to take Tylenol products when I got sick about a week after I had my surgery. You should call your surgeon to double check if they didn't give you paperwork telling you what meds you can take and ones you should avoid. -
Get by with a little help....
kmschneiderpac posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had a bad week. I dealt with some emotional baggage and some insecurity from decade ago that took its toll on me. In my depressed aftermath, I took to food. I have gotten off my schedule and track at 5 months post op. The good thing is, I realize it. Now I just need some support and encouragement from other sleevers who have been there and gotten back up. Thanks! -
Does anyone have huge fluid in their band
honk replied to seeme1954's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes I would say I am in the green zone. I also have an appointment with an oncologist tomorrow to see if there's a reason why I'm not losing more weight. I eat less than 1200 calories a day and exercise an hour 7 days a week and I am in a major stall. -
Get another fill so close to goal?
di1138 replied to BillOh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Bill, i have been asking my self the same question should I get a fill. I am almost at goal but I am getting hungry every 3 hours. I am trying to hold out to see if adding maintenance calories will help. I do work out a lot and that could be the reason for the hunger. I am trying to give it another 3 weeks to see what I feel like at goal. If adding calories does not work I will get one. ( I have only had 2 fills in total) Good luck and congrats on your success! -
I was thinking about the same thing so...we did our taxes. I had tons of mileage (100 miles each visit about once a week), copays, medications etc. In order to deduct medical it has to exceed 10% of your total income. It use to be 7.5% but with recent changes (no comment) it was increased pretty significantly. So if you made $50,000 this year your costs must exceed $5000. As far as writing off shakes and supplements typically if your Dr. writes you a script and you keep receipts you've got a good shot at writing it off. Also this year medical mileage is worth .17cents a mile if I'm not mistaken. I always keep my receipts but I have only been able to write off medical one tax year due to unforeseen huge dental expenses that year. You may already know this but many pharmacies are able to make a printout for individual patients and what they paid in prescriptions for the year. I hope this helps. ????

Smart I am going to get some ramekins. Soon I will start cooking & make a recipe book. Some of the foods look very good. I still have 4 1/2 weeks before I can taste them. I will wait til I get closer to that stage. Nice that your husband eats what you eat. My husband loves to cook & he keeps thinking of different recipes he can make. I am glad my family is supportive except for my 18 year old son he is not on board which is expected. Ha

Getting dicourages
johnlatte replied to MyGoodThang's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First congratulations on your loss!. A 50 lb loss in the first two - three months is somewhat above average for most people having this surgery. If I could ask, what was your expectation at this point? I ask this a lot from folks that post similar and it is rare that I get an answer. I really am curious what you thought you would weigh two months out. Did you talk to your surgeon to see where he thought you would be? Again great job on the loss, I would not be "dicouraged" if i were you. -
November 26th Check In :)
BroadwayBaby replied to wondering1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am down 2.4 lbs this week to 191.8 - just 2 ounces shy of my Thanksgiving goal. I hope to get into the 180's by next week - haven't been there in about 13 years! I had a great NSV yesterday. I am a singer and do a lot of gigs every Nov/December with people that I only really see during that time of year. I sang with one of the women last night and she asked me if I had lost some weight. I told her that I had lost 50 lbs and she said that when had I arrived at the gig she didn't even recognize me. That made me feel great! -
Hello, I've been banded for over a week now and I pretty much have no incision pains, but I do have a lot of gas pains. At first they were in my back and now they have moved to my left side. The left side gas pains started Monday night and it was soo bad that I almost shedded some tears. I had to leave work early Tuesday because I could barely stand up straight. I've took the gas-x strips and they really didn’t help. I'm now taking Mylanta and its ok but i can still feel the pains trying to start. Are there any other gas meds that you guys have used for relief? What did y'all do to get through the gas pains. I don't think my poor left side can’t take anymore shooting gas pain....its sore now.

Hello everybody, I am a new member though I've lurked for a while now.=) After years of research into every kind of WLS I chose VSG and once I made my decision things moved rapidly. I made the decision 1 week ago, have my consult with Dr. Jossart via phone on June 1st, and could potentially have the surgery the first week in August, I guess the rapiditiy of the process is due to being self-pay. My unique circumstance is that I work in Iraq as a civilian deployed with the Army. My RnR is for the month of August and I have the option of having the surgery then, but I would be returning to Iraq after only 3 wks recovery time. I knew that VST forum members would understand my excitement and the role it plays in the decision process; I don't want to rush, but I really want to rush! Is 3 weeks enough for recovery time? I'll be back to the states for good after 3 months and we have good docs here so I wouldn't be without care. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thank you everybody.

rooms to rent/ roomates, page 6f of todays paper. be really careful when leasing a place, lots of scams. It's only a dry heat this is what everybody will tell you when it's 120 degrees & your brain is baking like inside a microwave oven. I drink my share of water but also drink FUZE it tastes good. I don't let the Doctors see me with my bottle of FUZE. I don't do very much in the mid-day heat but swim. I also don't travel on freeways during week, as not to cook in car. I was hoping you could come to 1 of our weight loss meetings on the 22nd at SWCC 6pm. I have not tried it but some people use their Danger card when eating out with good results. Tied you yesterday with 119 pounds lost. Good Luck. Hasta Pronto, George:cool2:

Hi Blond Chick! Welcome!! You don't say how long ago you had surgery. I think sit-ups and weightlifting are the sorts of things you can do at whatever level you're comfortable, but probably not for several weeks after surgery (at least for the sit-ups). You want to give your body plenty of time to heal completely before putting any stress on the muscles. 8 weeks? And my doctor didn't say anything at all about alcohol in general. More than a little probably isn't the best idea, though, because even besides the empty calories it can lead to eating more than you might otherwise want. Which, with the band, can lead to major ouchies. :sick

Yes. This is very important. I have not lost as much weight in my first week or so as some people (I'm about 11 days post op) but I have to sit back and realize - I've lost about 22 pounds right before surgery and I need to bring my expectations into line with reality and appreciate my work this far.
