  1. @@arimerm1 hi there and congratulations on your surgery. I love my band and am so glad to have it as I would not have chosen another surgery. When I was doing my research I found this site which as then called Lapband Talk. I learned so much and will always be grateful for all the support and information. The site then merged to include other weight loss surgeries and that's what we have now, Bariatric Pal. Many of the old banders no longer participate because there was so much anti-band posting from people who chose other surgeries. People with revisions from band are not as many as it seems like but they are sometimes bitter and vociferously opinionated. I don't think they understand that they are undermining those of us who chose band. It would be like saying people with brown eyes are in for it, watch out! I try not to let them rattle me and I skip posts that even begin to sound negative. I am not here to get scared; I'm here to get support and to share experiences. My experience with the band has been great and I wouldn't trade it for anything. If something disastrous ever happens I will deal with it and of course we can just have our bands removed if need be. There's no going back from something more drastic. And the reason band is more rare now is because it requires followup -- quite a bit in the first year. I saw my surgeon 11 times. I bet the insurance company and hospital admin would much rather have him in the OR than shooting the breeze with me, but that's what we did. Not all surgeons want that much patient contact. Good luck to you with all that is ahead -- such an exciting new chapter in your life. Here's to choosing ourselves and our healthy futures. We are worth it!
  2. I've never had the band, so I don't know what you're dealing with. A distant relative had a band-to-sleeve revision last year and she's happy. Having heard her story, and on the advice of my surgeon, I went straight for the sleeve. My other option was standard bypass, but that seemed like more life-long maintenance and potential issues to worry about. At first, it's just surgery recovery. A coworker described my post-op diet as "newborn on fast-forward." I think that's pretty accurate. I was on solid foods after 6 weeks, and almost entirely unrestricted by 3 months. At around 5 months out, I started getting hungry again. Not family-bucket-of-KFC hungry, but I-forgot-to-eat-Breakfast hungry. Today, I can eat about two chicken legs and feel very full, and a few cubes of cheese or a dozen almonds is enough to satisfy me for several hours. If I eat too much - even one extra bite - I puke. I can drink as much as I want before a meal. Gulping traps air in my stomach and causes a burp, so I sip or use a straw. More than a sip during or right after a meal makes me feel overfull and causes me to puke. Every food I've tried so far works, but some didn't at first. I don't have trouble with straws. Some do. I haven't tried bubble gum or alcohol.
  3. I had the band a week ago, and so far I've lost 41 pounds in a month including the pre op diet. On this site, I'm seeing all these horror stories of people who need revisions, and that most people don't get the band anymore. My doctors talked me out of the other surgeries, because I'm very young (24) and am realtime lay healthy, which by their admission is extremely rare in someone my size. (praise be to G-d!) I would like to know if anyone here has had the band for a long time and hasn't had a horror story. I'd like to be reassured. Thanks!!
  4. I'm scheduled for September 14th! I'm a band revision and just had it removed this past Monday, 5 years to the day I had it put it. Recovering well and ready for September to get here. My dr. requires a three month healing time between the procedures so wanted to do it the safest way. Im always looking for buddies!!

    Larger sleeve after Lapband?

I think that each persons scarring /damage may vary. I was lucky... I revised from a band that never really worked to an awesome sleeve 3.5 years ago.
  6. I used Dr. Nicholson for my band in 2010 and he just did my revision to sleeve a few days ago at forest park. My mom had a sleeve a few months ago and she used Dr. Roshek out of his office at one of the Baylor surgery centers. The baylor surgery center was a nicer facility just based on aesthetics and room size but I had no issues at forest park. I would recommend either Dr. They were both wonderful and we've had no complications. Everyone at their office is great and very helpful. I especially like Sandy, one of the Nurse Practitioners.
  7. I was banded in 2010 (private pay) and never found my sweet spot. I was fed up with it 18 months later and quit going to the dr for fills and ended up gaining all of my weight back. Then, over the past year I've had a lot of trouble keeping solid food down (regurgitation) and when it got to a point where it was happening on a daily basis I went in to my Dr's office and after an upper GI they told me I had esophageal dysmotility. My esophagus wasnt doing the muscle motion needed to help me swallow and overall that my body wasn't agreeing with the band anymore and it needed to come out. I couldn't afford to pay for another out of pocket surgery so I asked what the cost was for a revision like mine and they told me that if you have a hernia (I did) and/or are having true medical problems that are caused by the band then bcbs would cover my revision. This turned out to be true, but it still wasn't cheap by any means. I paid about $5500 total for the dr, my egd and the surgery center's fee. Good luck with getting your revision!

VSG after long term band removal?

I had the band installed and removed in 2005. So I'm post op 10 years. My phone corrected 2005 to this year and I didn't catch it, my apologizes. I'm going to correct that now. Unfortunately the surgeon didn't say much of anything. He refused to answer questions when asked if being 10 years post op was in my favor or what the possible revision complications could be. I also need my gallbladder removed so he said he wanted to remove that first and simultaneously explore the condition of my stomach while inside before WLS. Which I was really excited to hear because that's what I was hoping for. I'm on their surgery schedule for the gallbladder removal but have been told if he can't get all of my bariatric surgical records than he won't remove my gallbladder, which doesn't make much sense to me and no one could even answer how a gallbladder removal and my stomach are intertwined.

    E6 month revision

Have a new surgeon here in Florida and he says lap bands DO NOT work. I have lost very little weight since my surgery. He offered to do the revision when we return to live here permanently in October.

    E6 month revision

No, mine was 3 years after the band. What does your surgeon say? Why are you wanting to revise so soon?

    Band to bypass approved today

Allie, I kind of relate Im thinking about taking my band out too, i have more than 20 to loose but my husband dosent think im bypass worthy because i dont have 100 pounds to loose. Do you find it hard to keep yourself nurrished? absolutely not. I'm healthier with my bypass than I ever was with the band. I was anemic with the band but I am not with the bypass. All my numbers have been amazing. I take sublingual Vitamins. Honestly I just wish I had done the bypass first. I did have to have my band unfilled (so terrifying) to gain 40 pounds to be eligible for the bypass revision. I did it in 5 weeks lol gaining weight is easy!!!!! Lol!

    Sleeve to bypass

Let's see, your UGI said that you did not have acid reflux. So there is a strong possibility what you are experiencing is a stricture, which generally is a fairly simple fix. Sounds like a quick fix and also a lot less painful that trying to do a sleeve to RNY revision.
  14. Following... I am in the process for revision with FEP... I do think they require that BMI of 35, but if you have other co morbities, maybe they will consider. I do believe you will pay more out of pocket by not using a center of excellence. I am in month two of 3 month supervised diet....my original surgery was done abroad and paid for by BCBS. I have some medical issues as well. I would just be sure to get your PCP to write a really great letter of necessity and follow the requirements to a T. Everything has to be done again.

My surgery is scheduled for July 21. I'm having a revision from the lapband to sleeve. A little nervous but wishing surgery was done already!
  16. I was self pay for band in 2001 and did well with weight loss at the beginning. Had some fills and unfills around 2009 and after that never felt right. Was too tight and did not eat well. Had imaging studies in 2011that showed esophagitis, gastritis, and a hiatal hernia. I had terrible shoulder pain and heartburn almost daily. Finally had the band emptied in 2013 but still have symptoms. Had a surgeon send in a letter in 2011 but was denied. I never got a copy of the denial. I want to try again but I have not been at a 35 bmi for two years. Anyone approved due to medical necessity for similar circumstances? Also my preferred surgeon is not at a center of excellence and I really want him to do my surgery. I have thought about self pay but am scared that if I develop complications since I have had band for 14 years that insurance will not cover the complications. Thank you for your thoughts!
  17. Has anyone had a revision, band to sleeve, in on,y after 6 months?

    Varying Degrees of Restriction?

Thanks for replying Girls Good to know I'm not alone and it's like that for me too. Some days I can eat more than others, but it's always much less at night like what you've both been describing...3 teaspoons full and I'm done!! I've yet to find a reason for it though??? I have my follow up on the 15th so will ask the Surgeon then what he makes of it??? Because I am a Revision, I don't know if I'm feeling less restriction than if I was a straight up Sleever?? I have a suspicion because my adhesions from the Lapband were moderate in degree that the size of the bougie he used probably wasn't as small as it could've been (and I asked for the smallest!! ). Again, will clarify that when I see him. Yes, I lost 56 kg's (123IB's) with the Band and weighed 54 kg's (119Ib's) when I fell pregnant with my daughter in Dec 2014. My band eroded (though none of us knew it) when I was about 23wks pregnant (so couldn't do a barium swallow xray to confirm) and I literally woke up one morning and had lost all restriction (a leaking port or tube was suspected) which led to regaining weight to the tune of 30kg's (66 Ib's) by the time I was sleeved in May this year Am aiming to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight but wondering if it's too ambitious?? Have about 18kg's (39Ib's) to go!!!
  20. July 9 2015 @ 11a Revision from Lap-Band to Sleeve "VSG"????????????????????????????????????????☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️
  21. Hello everyone! I've seen many posts about relatively short term revisions between both operations. By short term I mean anywhere from a 2-in-1 surgery to 6 months after band removal. I'm curious if anyone has personally had or heard of someone having had a revision years later? And what was the outcome? I was banded for maybe only 10 months, 11 maximum In 2005. I had a port flip that went corrected for 2-3 weeks, I saw my PCP at the time who did nothing and I was so dehydrated and my abdomen became so swollen that I went to the ER where a barium swallow and imaging confirmed the blockage of excess saline constricting my stomach. I had a corrective surgery and about 3-4 months later I had minor slippage after my stomach had lost the majority of the swelling and some erosion. I have been fine, but fat, ever since. I'm currently seeking a VSG revision, but can't find anyone in a similar situation for a point of reference. I'm hoping my stomach is sound enough to be operated on. I had a horrible consultation experience this week and am now looking at other surgeons. I've had an abdominal ultra sound and various chest/abdominal scans with no imaging reports mentioning my stomach. My PCP believes I'm healthy enough to with stand surgery and could be very successful. So with that said, I know we're only patients here so I should take answers lightly, what do you feel like could be my biggest set back? Is the 10 year gap in my favor or does the time frame mean nothing? Thanks!
  22. NoMoBand you are absolutely right, I had a lot of scar tissue and my band had attached itself to my diaphram. I was in surgery over 3 hours, I had blood and platelets administered during surgery and I had and still have some scar tissue at my port site. My dr never told me that my sleeve could be bigger than those who do not have a revision. However, I have had good restriction and feel that it was a successful revison surgery.

    Varying Degrees of Restriction?

I don't know this for a fact, but I've heard that revisions sometimes don't feel as much restriction as a strait up sleeve...but if those of you revisions want to chime in and let me know if that's true or not that would be great... But with me, who is not a revision, it varies from day to day. Some days I feel like I can eat so much and barely feel restriction, and other days I eat 3 bites and I'm stuffed. It's really weird!
  24. When I met my husband in 2007, I was smaller still overweight but smaller. I worked out with a trainer and was very active. He was about 270 and he is 6ft tall. I like chubby boys too :-). Well he proposed and got serious and dropped about 40lbs he is very muscular so at 230 he looked amazing. I have gained weight throughout the years. He went to NUT with me and worked out with me. He saw my struggle and understood my decision for surgery. He even did preop horrible diet with me for 2weeks! So here I am needing revision surgery for health related reasons and he is still my biggest cheerleader. We have spoken about this subject. I can't imagine us ever leaving one another. He wants me to be healthy and happy. Plus he knows when I feel better about myself I am friskier! I do believe that with weight loss comes confidence. If there are issues pre surgery they are even become more evident post surgery. The decision to have surgery is so emotional, a strong support system is key. If people are not supportive I think it is important to purge them.
  25. I find it interesting that when the sleeve increased to 51% in 2014 that revisions also increased to 11%.
