Sleeve and Umbilical Hernia in Mexico
OasisTerry replied to wendyemitchell's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi Wendy, I had my sleeve on May 7, lost almost 60 lbs (yay me!) and have not had my belly button hernia repaired. I have not had any pain, I thought that as I lost the weight, the bulge would become more prominent but I honestly can't see it anymore, I do have a bit of excess skin so that's definitely a factor. I'm scheduled for an ultrasound in a couple of weeks and my PCP thinks it was a good decision from my Mexico doctor not to touch it. I'll have to wait and see. Since every case is unique, I hope you find the doctor, group or facilitator that fits your needs. Seems like most of the folks on this site are very happy with the service and the support. I'm 50+ and was initially traveling to Tijuana alone so I looked for a facilitator that would cater to that. I did not want a mini-vacation or shopping trips, I wanted to focus on my surgery and recovery. In the end my daughter came with me which was great, but my facilitator was golden. Let me know if you have any questions about the process and I'll be happy to share what I know. -
July 7th Bandsters to be???
bobbiezhere replied to PSJ71's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Ladies! I'm July7th too! I go in at 10, surgery at Noon. My pre op (2 weeks) starts tomorow - 6/23. And my "last lunch" today was tacos, lol. and a diet coke. Love my diet coke. My pre op consists of no carbs really. 70-80 grams of Protein for the 3 meals. Other than that, crystal lite, Water, boullion, s/f Jello or s/f popsicles. Tho i can also have decaf coffee. I'm excited...well, i'm not excited about this pre op diet, but i am excited that its only 2 weeks away before it all changes for us! Looking forward to all of our successes - please feel free to email or do whatever to share your experiences ! We're on our way! -
Please don't get soo frustrated, the lap band is a tool, not a cure all. I was banded 8/2006 and only lost 70 pounds in the first year. After a long plateau, I finally got serious and started to eat right and diet. Cardio is the best thing you can do for yourself. If only 30 minutes at a time right now,,,,maybe do 2 or 3 times a day if you can. Swimming is also good cardio, esp if you have bad joints. I am not sure of your situation, but feel free to keep in contact if I can be of any help. p.sticern@yahoo.com

Any Jacksonville FL folks?!
*susan* replied to 2Legit2Quit's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey there, just wanted to drop in and welcome you to LBT! I was banded by Dr. Herrera in 2006. In terms of Dr. Herrera, he is amazing. I recently had a bit of a run-in with his office staff that left a very bad taste in my mouth. I met Dr. Baptista for the first time today. I was referred to him for some separate issues I am having, non band-related. Actually, I was quite impressed with him and his staff. I have been having a great deal of medical issues for the past few weeks, and he spent close to an hour with me today trying to find the cause and really listening to me. I have not met Dr. Cywes, but have heard very good things about him. I hear he can be a bit rough around the edges, but is an excellent doctor. -
So my doc clarified that when i can go on to pureed food...i cannot have starches...they want to maximize weight loss in the beginning...it seems that most other places do their stages differently...most of u have had mashed pot since the beginning it seems...i guess its good b.c i will shed some more weight...just trying to come up with other food ideas...my question is have any of you put tuna or chix salad in the blender? is that totally gross? Also, i do puree for a week, then the next week is a "transition" week where i still puree but add more texture..or fork mash things...after that stage i go to regular foods....i am scared that i will be starving b.c right now i feel hungry...and i know i can do nothing about it till my fill at my 6 week checkup...i feel like i will be one of those who lap band doesnt help...im paranoid...i feel like i couldnt possibly be NOT hungry, if that makes any sense...since i feel it now...please tell me that i will have the will to control my hunger b4 my fill, and tell me that my fill will restrict?!?!

Drinking & Eating & Alcohol
Fanny Adams replied to Me1e's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The "no drinking" rule is mostly so that you don't wash the food through your band quickly and end up hungry again soon afterwards. Having a glass of wine with dinner on occasion shouldn't be a problem, but if you find yourself snacking when you get home because you are hungry again, you should probably rethink drinking with meals. Also, as you get good restriction, you may find that drinking anything while eating is actually difficult - I am finding this now. I tend to have a little sip of Water just after a meal to wash my mouth out, but drinking anything more than that can lead to PBing  All things in moderation is the name of the game! One of the benefits that I have found is that my tolerances for alcohol have GREATLY reduced. One or two glasses of wine over the full course of the evening is the most I can manage now without getting really tipsy, whereas previously I could easily knock off the bottle on my own - yay for cheap highs! Be really really careful in a "drinking session with the girlfriends" though - the alcohol does hit you much faster and you can easily overdo it before you realise it. The LAST thing you need is to end up with your head in the toilet bowl throwing up; that is a HUGE no-no! I had a glass of wine on Xmas Day, which was 2 weeks after surgery. -
I had my surgery on 7/14, have had 2 fills since and I am scheduled to go back on 9/23, I was having a problem where everytime I ate I vomited, I was getting scared so I called and went today and they removed 1cc and gave me some ideas of things to try as they want me to stop vomiting. I have lost 47 lbs but 22 of that was my 2 week preop diet but they tell me I am doing great, I lost 7 lbs this past week because of the vomiting and they said that is not the way to do it. I walk between 3-5 miles a day and bowl 1 night a week for my exercise. It does get better.

I share in your frustration! I was banded 08/18/08 and I lost 12 pounds on the liquid pre-op diet and 11 pounds the first week after surgery. I have gained a couple of that back. I am also walking 30-45 minutes a day and the scales aren't moving! I have no advice or help to offer but I wanted you to know that you are not in this alone! I'm not giving up! Hang in there!

It is hard. I had to keep my calories around 800-1200. I also mix it up...really high calories for 2-3 days, lower the following days. I swear exercise is the key...Since I have not been working out consistently, I have only lost 5 pounds in 3 months. When I was working out I lost 70 the first 6 months....

Newbie!: Dr Lopez & Osuna or Dr Perez stories?
megamoma replied to RellaBelle's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had my sleeve done by Dr. Lopez in PV on 6/14/14. It was great. Everything went better than I had expected. I had very little gas pain and was out walking on the beach 2 days after surgery! I flew from Little Rock, AR to Houston, TX to Puerto Vallarta for $467 a ticket round trip. I'm 3 weeks out and so far so good! -
Newbie!: Dr Lopez & Osuna or Dr Perez stories?
Sherri297 replied to RellaBelle's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi there, Dr. Lopez and his wife Dr. Osuna did my surgery in Tijuana 20 months ago (Oct, 2012). At that time he was booking through "A Lighter Me". I was very happy with my care. The reason that I went with him in particular was that he supposedly specialized in higher BMI and at risk patients. (Previous heart attack/diabetes). However Candy Pants had some great questions on her list that I wish I had asked. "Like how many surgeries per day". At that time Dr. Lopez was traveling to 3 cities a month, and in my opinion A Lighter Me severely overbooked him. I was scheduled to have Surgery on a Monday, he had 5 surgeries that day. The Dr. decides after conferring with patients what order he will do the surgeries in. The first 3 surgeries were long with other procedures added as well. 2 - were bypasses with abdominal hernias, all that being said I finally got into surgery at 2AM on Tuesday. Out of recovery at 5:30AM, then at 8 the nurses were insisting that I get into the shower. My recovery went very well with no complications. I've done well with my weight loss, not where I want to be yet, but I have faith that I will get there. -
FEELING THE PRESSURE
1poundatatime replied to Chris Stewart's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been working hard at tracking exactly what I eat and I've trying to eat lots of Protein and minimal carbs. My surgery is a week after yours. I'm supposed to lose 5% - so 13 lbs - and am down 8 in just two weeks! I want to make as many healthy changes pre-op as I can! Good luck to you!! -
My NUT told me that some people (mostly women) lose weight as if they are stepping down stairs (lose and then stay the same for a bit, then lose and then stay the same for a bit). Others lose like walking down a ramp (basically lose the same amount on average every week). For some reason this picture made perfect sense to me and has stuck in my head. I am for sure a stair stepper and it drives me nuts but I keep telling myself that it doesn't matter if you are stepping down stairs or walking down a ramp you'll eventually get to the bottom So it may not be a true stall but maybe just the flat part of the step. Hang in there!!

Hi, I'm struggling with various issues right now, but I am hoping to have RNY in 14. I have the Band which must be taken out. I was admitted to the hospital for four days a week and a half ago with the fear I was having a heart attack, turns out my heart is in great shape, but now I have Asthma. I'm only 47. I now have 24/7 Oxygen inside the house, at work and outside of the house. Probably permanent. Will this keep me from having the RNY?

Hey guy I am soooo HAAAAPPPYY. My neighbors probably don't like me right now because there is a lot of hooting and hollering going on in my house. My 3 yr old is looking at me mad crazy because I was APPPPROVED for my VSG surgery so excited. I have been stalking the insurance company everyday for about 10 business days and final an approval.

Holidays are pretty hard. This will be the first Thanksgiving we don't celebrate either because my dad and brother went away for a hunting trip. Guess just a lot of changes very quickly!!! I am loving the snow right now. Oh I understand the no help with the Christmas Tree thats what I forced the issue of it going up now. My doc said maybe 2 weeks, but then an additional 4 weeks of just desk work. He doesn't want me lifting on patients, doing CPR's and very strenuous stuff just to let the staples heal. When I see him on the 2nd I hope that I get my release to go back This group is pretty cool, I'm not one to do online forums but I do enjoy this and all the helpful advice every one gives. @@M&S thanks for the advice Ill definitely put together a music list. Definitely no walking outside for me the next few days. I'm a natural born klutz and we decided it was not best for me to walk outside in the snow and end up falling on my new and improved stomach

I have on average 5 protein drinks per day (I have to have 100 g a day). I also eat sf Popsicles & fudge pops (my surgon said the fudge pops would be fine, I would check with your surgon) I can also have chicken/beff/veggie broth but it's a lil to salt for me so I don't eat that often. I'm on a 2 week liquid diet & I have lost 15 lbs sine 10/15 for a total pre op weight loss of 50 lbs my surgery is 10/29 & I'm so ready to be on the other side. My best advise is don't try a premix protien & expect the power version to taste the same. I did this with isopure I could tolerate the premix it wasn't to bad so I bought the powder & it's one of the most disgusting things I've put in my mouth, so $100 later & a cabinet full of isopure I had to go to Wal Mart in search of something I could tolerate. EAS & the bullets have been a huge blessing. I mix the bullets in my water because I have to get at least 64 oz a day so I'm getting water & protien at the same time. I hope this helps give you an idea.

What you have to realize is that you have had major surgery, even though you have no big incision. As other have said the first couple weeks you may feel you got hit by a train. Once you go thru all the steps and get to solid food that will be the amazing time. Your sleeve will tell you in no uncertain terms when to stop and believe me it will be only after a couple bites. This is the time you have to be careful and use that space wisely. I am 10 mos. out and am down over 80#. Going on a cruise in Jan. and I cannot tell you how much fun to get clothes and look so good. The other thing is the energy level. You always heard people who have lost say they now have so much ebergy...WOW. My husband is on the phone telling family that he has no idea what I may have accomplished by the time he gets home. I am 66 and my only regret is that I could have had this sooner, but I am truly enjoying and have nver regretted this decision(maybe early on I got teary eyed when I passed the Chinese buffett) The buffett is out but every once in a while I get an order of something and it lasts me 3 days. So just go day by day and soon all these little problems will resolve and you will literally be amazed...

Hey Mia, gosh, we sound like we are in the same boat. I was tiny before having my first child at 18. i was a cheerleader, still have my old uniforms. the skirts fit around my thighs now...lol. how tall are you??? I have to lose 80 lbs or so also, but I am thinking I will be happy at around 60 lbs of loss. I have big hips, and when i was tiny, I always thought my butt was too big, but when I weighed 135-140, I thought my junk was just right! Besides, my goal here is to be Phat, not fat. well, good luck girl! This place is the BEST support system I have found. I have lots of fun on LBT! Another "by the way", I was just banded on 3/13/06....and I have been married 14 years this october, with three kids!!

Congratulations on your fabulous progress! 50lbs is fantastic! Stalls are pretty darn common and as long as you are following the plan, your stall will break. Everyone hates a stall but there will be many more I am sad to say. My longest lasted almost a month, my shortest about 10 days. I am typically a daily weigher although when I am in a stall I have to remind myself not to get frustrated. Just keep moving forward with your diet and exercise and the stall will break. I would also consider that you are working out a lot which is great but what might be happening is that you are building muscle which weighs more than fat. You might even notice that even though the scale is not moving your clothes might be getting loser. I would guess that you are losing inches. Hang in there!

I am currently 10 weeks post op and have lost 50 #. I have not lost any weight in the last 3 weeks, I have heard of the 3 month stall but did not expect it to happen so soon. I work out 6 days a week, all 6 days with some form of cardio(only walking), distance, intervals, fast pace etc. I also do upper and lower body weights 2xweek. I have not started sit-ups as I was told not to start them until my 3 month visit. Does anyone have any ideas to get me jump started? I am getting frustrated and have slipped back to my old ways twice. Please help me.

Yeah I am not happy with my journey so far. Today I went in for my 1st fill & I am up 4lbs since surgery. My Dr. said at my 1 week post op appt that I probably wouldn't feel any restriction until about the 3rd fill. Not my idea of fun, but I am in it for the long haul. I need to be sure to eat as if I have restriction even though I don't. So I assume that is about 2oz at a time. Fun, fun, fun. LOL Ok enough for now. I hope everyone does awesome this week!!!! :scared2:

Surgery 12.8! Today has been a horrible struggle! The 3 "juice box" meals don't really bother me, it's the crunch of real food i want so bad today! I would love to eat a warm meal also! Monday morning can not get here soon enough!

Self-Sabotage & why I eat crap
chavezmommy replied to Ruth1ess's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm 3 weeks post op and I can totally relate. Yesterday I over ate. I cooked and ate green chili soup and it brought me back to "this is my food and this is what I eat. This satisfies me." Evenings are when I struggle most. I over ate the most during the evening pre-surgery. When I eat the allowed food it tastes ok but I have a hard time knowing when to stop. When will I feel satisfied? I think it's a habit that it's not until I feel gross full. Otherwise I feel empty. I'm referring to my stomach and my inner being. I don't have a solution to this yet. I'm glad to see this post and hope learn from others. -
Self-Sabotage & why I eat crap
FocusOnMeNow replied to Ruth1ess's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@InnerSurferGirl Brene Brown is the bomb. I believe OKC Pirate or someone on here posted a link to her TED talk. I am trying to read at least three of her books. Her work on vulnerability, guilt and shame are phenomenal. I would highly recommend to ANYONE who has had or is considering weight loss surgery to go to OA. Try at least 3 different meetings at least 3 times until you find a good fit. The good thing about OA and about seeing a therapist (I am doing both)... is that we cannot do this journey alone. Yes there is a lot of introspection, self-awareness and self-care going on and ultimately you have to do the work for you. BUT I realized that all of the activities I was doing by myself after awhile was pretty isolating. Part of the reason, is that I have been hurt before a lot. OA and/or a therapist gives you some acceptance and some interaction which is an important part of healing, and I feel its very important.
