Pre Op high protein diet
Arabesque replied to Ren2022's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My pre op diet was keto so high protein too but also high fat which I struggled with. No calorie limit though. Why are you focussing on mushy food? After surgery you only eat purées & then soft foods for about 4 weeks & believe me that’s too long! Ensuring you meet your protein goals will be life long thing so I say enjoy any & all proteins in all forms. The protein snacks I go to are cheese, high protein yoghurt, hummus, liverwurst or pate (with crudités or a couple of multi grain crackers), protein bar (be careful some have a lot of sugar or artificial sugars). Occasionally I’ll have nuts or roasted fava beans or chick peas. You can also nibble on some meat like some chicken (watch deli meats that are cured or fatty like ham, salamis, etc.) or a boiled egg. Hope you get a surgery date soon. -
Two secrets: I not only withheld my surgery; I also withheld that I went to Mexico to have it done. I have kept it to a very small group of 4 -- my 3 adult children and my mom. My kids were my emergency contacts and they knew about the surgery before I went. I went alone to Mexico due to Covid and it took me 2 months to admit to my kids where it was done. It was 4 months later that I shared both with my mom, due to not being able to predict her response (she was charmingly supportive). My mom and children have shared it with some of their friends and significant others. I have not told my siblings, best friend, cousins, or close co-workers. About work: My students have not really noticed. Coworkers are a mixed bag - some ask - one in particular who I am not close to brings up my weightloss A LOT. Almost everyone else just ignores it or compliments my outfits. I have had people come to me about weight loss advice and they have told me about how upset they feel. With an honest heart, I reassure them that they look wonderful to me. Since I am a teacher and gossip is constant in our school, I have chosen time and again to not share my journey. The fallout: One of my three children felt betrayed that I lied about where I was having my surgery - honestly this has put a real strain on our relationship. She is hurting, but she has to come to terms with this in her own time. I feel guilty for not telling other members of my family, but I am standing by my decision. I work very hard to stay body positive and I believe that all sizes are beautiful in others - I could not give this grace to myself. Am I going to continue to hold this as a secret? Most likely yes. If I ever have a man that I am serious about, I may confide in him. As time has worn on, I feel even less likely to tell people, not more.

Surgery date: 11/8/2021 Initial Weight: 280 lbs Current Weight: 175 lbs Net Loss: 105 lbs so happy with my progress and did my first 5k (Donut Dash) on 4/3/2022. No donut for me though but it was so much fun. -
Yeah the throat spray was key when i woke up from surgery as well as all the times i woke up from my gazillion naps. Mr. sweet-talked a nurse to tuck the spray bottle in my gurney in the recovery room so it was there as soon as i woke up, thank goodness…my throat was dry like the desert and it hurt! also really handy in the first couple weeks post cuz i could hardly drink any water and hydrate my throat here Is what i used:

Stall or I am done loosing?
Orinskye replied to SleeverSk's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was the same weight for MONTHS (185pounds)… at about a year out I figured “okay, this is it. I’m stable and maintaining now”. Recently they have me increasing my calories (I’ve managed to get up to 1500 calories a day which has been a difficult transition because I tend to eat foods that are lower in calories ) and then I dropped a Lot of pounds very quickly. I am now 174 (I hadn’t weighed myself in a while because I always hovered around 185) . My nutritionist about had a fit and wants me to do more regular check ins now. (Insert eye roll here). I just got Invisalign too so my tendency to snack (which is how I upped my calories) is now nonexistent because getting these Invisalign trays off are like wrestling a rabid animal 😅 anyways…. I know a lot of people have broken stalls by temporarily increasing their caloric intake. 🤷🏼♀️ You could increase your calories and see if that jump starts weight loss again -
I told my family (brother & sister) because I knew they wouldn’t say anything rude to me - that’s just how we are. I told a few friends & if one of them asked about my weight loss I told them. But I told my husband & daughters that under any circumstances while I’m still alive are they to tell his dad & brother! His family has always made us feel bad about the size of all of us & I just don’t want them knowing. We saw his dad a couple weeks ago when my oldest was visiting. His girlfriend hasn’t seen me in a while. She kept calling me skinny mini & going on & on about how much weight I have lost. When she asked how I did it I just said by changing my eating habits & eating smaller portions. (That’s not a lie) I felt bad that she said anything because my older daughter is a big girl. She would love to have surgery but can’t afford it right now. I could tell that it was upsetting to her😿

Had lap band unfilled due to not being able to keep food or drinks down

Had lap band unfilled due to not being able to keep food or drinks down
KayG posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am new to this site so I hope I'm doing things right! I've had my band for 14 years. Several years ago I started having issues with with food going down and drinks. I could only eat certain things and sometimes it depended on the time of day. I know it's weird and hard to explain. I lived with it until 3 weeks ago. I had an upper GI and it showed nothing went into my stomach (at least that thick drink didn't at that time. I had my band unfilled (mainly because I was taking a trip to Costa Rica and wanted to enjoy eating & drinking without vomiting). Since I've been "unfilled" I have been bloated, swollen and have gained weight. I've been very careful about what I'm eating and all I drink is water (which before I was unfilled water would hardly go down for me). I will be having another upper GI at the end of the month and then see the doctor early may. I just don't want to keep gaining weight! Any ideas or suggestions at what's happening with me?! -
My program advised as soon as you could consume 3 oz. of solid protein at each meal to discontinue the shake. Once you are able to do that you can start adding cooked vegetables and then some limited carbs. If you have room. I'm at right about the 3oz. stage now but haven't cut the shake out yet. Probably next week.

Are you asleep during gastric sleeve or sedation

Yea they knock us out with general anesthesia. Most people have a appointment with the anesthesiologist prior to surgery to go over your medical history (I have my appointment next week for that) -
How soon after surgery did you risk trying raw veggies?
DaisyAndSunshine replied to FutureSylph's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
4 months out and yet to try raw salads. I don't crave it nor am I huge fan of it. So haven't tried much. My program allowed it after 3 months mark as long as we are able to tolerate it. Only thing raw I eat are onions with my curries, that too just a little. -

How funny to read this post because I was wondering the same. I'm a little past 3 months out and today I bought a bad of romaine lettuce. I am not a salad girl, but something compelled me to purchase it. I have not tried it yet, but I probably will tomorrow. -
Stall or I am done loosing?
catwoman7 replied to SleeverSk's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
the further out I got, the more frequent the stalls were, and the longer they'd last. Every time I'd be three or four weeks into one I'd think "well, this is it...", and then I'd suddenly start losing again. It finally quit at 20 months out. So in short, this may or may not be the end of it... -
It is such a personal decision! Most of my friends know, as well as my immediate family and my husband's family. Everyone has been supportive (to my face, at least) and no one has given unsolicited opinions. Lots of questions, but I don't mind that at all. My extended family doesn't know - I don't live near them, and they are the unfortunate combination of gossipy and judgmental, so I didn't feel the need to broadcast it. I'm reaching a decision point, potentially, as I will see them for Easter in a few weeks. While I am still obese, by the time I see them I'll have dropped around 100 lbs, so I can't imagine someone won't realize I'm losing weight. I need to decide what I will say when they ask. I don't feel ashamed of surgery, and I want to be a good advocate for the procedure as an option for people so educating them could be good. But, I know I will be the topic of conversation (and probably conversation on whether I will keep it off or not this time) so I need to think through how to handle it. In the end, you have to decide what will give you the best support. I have found having a good support network has been so helpful - they are happy for me and are good cheerleaders sometimes when I need it. But, if the people around you are likely to be toxic, then I would keep my mouth shut. You don't owe anyone an explanation and the potential impact of toxicity on your success is huge.

How long does it take to eat normally at a normal pace?
ms.sss replied to Lucylovesfood's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Rice. This is likely the main contribution to your inability to eat alot and gain weight. Rice is notoriously filling for the majority of us, with low nutritional value. One cup is only 200 cals so if the majority of your diet is (less than) 1 cup of rice and a chicken thigh (and assuming you attempt this 3 times a day) your cals are pretty low by end of the day….resulting in further weight loss. Maybe cut down a bit on the rice and replace with with a fattier meat? Or some avocado? You can also pour a nice high-calories sauce over it all, like a pesto or herb infused olive oil, or a nice peanut satay, etc. P.S. Rice was a daily staple for me too pre-op…now i only have rice when i eat sushi. -
Yes, you can eat out after surgery
ms.sss replied to lizonaplane's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I “eat out” (or take out) all the time…maybe 3-4 times a week (and almost always when its NOT my turn to cook, lol) I don’t actually eat much (compared to others) when i do, and sometimes i wont even eat, i’ll just drink. Im not losing any more weight, but im not gaining any either. -
Food Before and After Photos

Last night’s dinner was from a local Mexican place. I got mixed fajitas. The before and after is misleading as one kid ate about 1/3 of my beans and another had a pretty stuffed fajita. I ended up throwing away the other tortilla. Also, I hardly ever drink and managed maybe 4oz of a frozen margarita. 😂🙃 Although I did end up eating 2 pieces of sopapilla and 2.5 churros. -
How soon after surgery did you risk trying raw veggies?
summerseeker replied to FutureSylph's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
At 8 weeks I could eat avocado's, tiny baby cucumbers, a few sweet cherry tomatoes and some beetroot. My restriction limits my eating so that If I eat salad it limits the amount of protein I can stomach. So salad is a treat. lol. I don't eat much at once and eat it after my protein -

Hi there, My surgery is tomorrow and I am just winding up the mostly liquid diet from the past two weeks. Could also snack on veggies, so it wasn't too bad. I was able to use Premier Protein Shakes and there were lots of tasty flavors, so I could mix it up and not get bored. -
Finally a date-ques. about preop diet.
idk4w replied to mrsjo's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was shocked when someone told me her surgeon had her on a full liquid diet for 2 weeks prior! But again, every surgeon will have his/her own rules. I think it's really just a matter of making sure your liver is REALLY shrunken, not to risk the surgeon being able to do what he's gotta do. My surgery was pushed off bec of a covid uptick just then, and then I was only given one week notice before my surgery. I flipped out, and was like, oh no, what about the 2 week pre-op? They told me to just be super strict with only lean proteins, veg, minimal fruit, and it would be fine. I also did clear liquids one day prior. As mentioned above, it may also have to do with your BMI and what the pre-op ultrasounds showed on your liver. it ain't easy, but then, no one said this would be! Best of luck to you! -

I am currently on day 2 of my pre op diet... It sucks lol I am on 2 weeks... Surgeon says it depends on your BMI... My BMI is like 55, People on lower BMI have 1 week and there are those who dont even have to do a pre op diet just a liquid diet the day before surgery. but yea like someone already said every surgeon is different. Some surgeons allow at least 1 small meal along with the protein shakes a day, Some are strictly just liquid. So if you only have to do 7 days you are lucky in my opinion -
So 1 more week hopefully lol
