    I'm Banned in Texas

"I think my biggest problem will be when I go back to work next week. What will I eat for lunch? In the past, I would just hit a fast food place or Subway." I was in the same boat as you. KFC 6 piece dinner, Subway Cold Cut Combo: foot long of course (with chips and bucket of soda), a whole Papa John's medium pizza with pepperoni, extra-cheese, and some onions and peppers for being healthy. Oh, and I could always go for Mickey D's. Now, I pack Breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack and bring it to work every day, and I rarely deviate. Here is a typical sample: Breakfast (may take a couple of hours to eat all of this): 1 Yogurt 1 Hard Boiled Egg 1 coffee 1 Bottle of Water with Crystal Light 1 small can Diet Red Bull Lunch: Protein shake sugar free pudding 1 bottle of water with crystal light Afternoon Snack: Muscle Milk - Protein Pudding Bottle of water with Crystal light 1 coffee (long ride home) Dinner can be Soup or tuna or any of a myriad of other protein rich foods. I hope this helps.
  2. Ah Cookies. Me too Denise. I will never have a normal relationship with sugary carbs. I could live on them, quite happily. Unfortunately, they go down really easily. What I find helps me (and is this normal? Probably not!) is that every morning, I set out on the bench the 2 pieces of fruit, the carton of yogurt, the 4 bottles of Water, and the five different vegetables I am going to get through that day. The veges I can put aside in the fridge -- usually have some in a sandwich for lunch and several steamed for dinner. I make a pact with myself that the fruit, yogurt and water is to be eaten FIRST whenever I get picky. I usually find if I do that, I can control the cravings for cookies that strikes at 11 am. And contrary to my previous beliefs about water, I do indeed find chugging down half a litre of water if I feel like eating something really DOES quell the urge a lot of the time. If I have to play mind games like this with myself I doubt I could be called normal, but oh well, if it keeps me healthy I'm happy enough with it.

  4. This is an EASY desert, and so yummy. It started off as a high fat desert made with pound cake, lemon curd, heavy whipping cream, you get the picture. Well, over the past year, I have made it so many times, I have come up with an alternative recipe and it will WOW a crowd. Wendy's Lemon berry Trifle 1 14oz Can of Fat Free Sweetened Condensed Milk 2 6oz containers of Light Lemon Yogurt 1/3 Cup Lemon juice (use fresh lemons, not the fake stuff) 2 Tsp grated Lemon Peel 1 Large Whip Cream (FREE) 1 Large pre-made Angel food Cake 1 Cup Sliced Fresh Strawberries 4 oz Fresh Blueberries (or more, but the container I get is this size) 4 oz Fresh Raspberries (or more) 1/4 Cup Slivered almonds, toasted Splenda (optional) Cut cake into 1" cubes, separate into thirds. In large bowl, combine mild, yogurt, lemon juice and peel. Fold in 2 Cups Whip Cream (or more, adjust to taste) In large Trifle bowl, place 1/3 Cake, top with 1/3 Lemon mixture, then layer all of the strawberries on top. I sprinkle a small amount of Splenda on top of the fresh fruit when it isn't in season. Repeat cake, lemon mixture and all of blueberries (and Splenda if needed) Repeat Cake, lemon mixture and all of Raspberries (and Splenda if needed) Top with whip cream Toast almonds in dry pan until brown, let cool and sprinkle on top of whip cream. Refrigerate at least 8 hours before serving.

    Slow Loser with Problems!

To start things off I will start witht the water thing. Try crystal light. That is my best friend, 5 calories and it is delicious. The problem with drinking fruit juice is it has a great deal of sugar, and carbs, basically empty calories. You can find many in light which is useful. You want to be careful because you do not want to drink all of your calories. Next you are probably more tight in the morning as most are because your stomach has not been working all night. Basically you need to wake your stomach up. Try yogurt, cottage cheese, oatmeal, something with protein. You are eating things that are easy to go down which leads to the problem of having our stomachs be "asleep". You should be trying things that are high in protein. Next you said yourself that you are eating things that are bad and high in salt, avoid that. You will not lose weight if that is all you are eating. Get in with a nutritionist, meet with your surgeon, but avoid things with empty calories. Also you said you are eating mostly between 5-8 pm. Studies show this is unhealty because your metabolism slows at night. Try and stop eating by 5 or 6 pm at night, not always possible, I know. Lastly, stay positive. You have been successful thus far and deserve to enjoy this period in your life. Keep your head up and ood luck.

    2 weeks post-op----hooray!!

So I lied. I sometimes just don't have the energy to log on everyday and type as I sit all day at work looking at a computer. But anyway, so far so good. I went to Wal-Mart and got a scale and according to it, I lost 3 more lbs for a total of 13.That's okay, not great in my mind as I am consuming only about 600 calories a day. But then again, it's been 2 weeks so that is pretty good for 2 weeks. I really really want some food but thankfully the dr. allowed me to add yogurt, v8 juice and anything else as long as it is liquid. So prayerfully I can make it through 1 more weekend then on to Pureed. I can't wait to eat refried beans and potatoes or whatever else I'm allowed. Later, Rumar

  8. I guess you need to ask yourself are you hungry? Really? Or are you simply falling into old behaviors. Trust me, I have to do this every single day many times a day. Your carbs are quite high given you just had surgery and are in the weight loss phase. As far as eating dinner, you should not skip meals but maybe starting tomorrow focus on reducing Snacks or choosing a snack that will stick with you longer. sugar free chocolate is not a good option. It won't kill you but there are choices that will keep you fuller longer. I had to stop eating yogurt because for me it is a slider food and I am hungry again pretty quickly. I will usually snack on cottage cheese or chicken salad or lunch meat and cheese. Those tend to stay with me longer. Also I noticed that Protein bars that have Peanut Butter in them stay with me for a very long time.

    Sheesh....

I just have to get this off my chest. I work at a hospital. They have a beautiful cafe that I enjoy dining in. Anyway, I go in there for my morning break and purchase a protein drink and yogurt. Twice now I have bought Light Muscle Milk which has been expired. What an idiot I am, I should look at the date but I don't. Today the expiration date read 11/11. Now my stomach is upset. Being on a liquid diet already sucks because of headaches I am having, now this. You would think a hospital would be more careful of the food or drinks in their cafe for the health of their consumers. Thanks for listening!

    Back to work schedule suggestions

When I was sleeved I worked 12 hour nights as a floor nurse. My packed lunches in those early weeks consisted of foods such as cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, creamed cheddar & broccoli soup, black beans & sour cream, deviled eggs, and white chicken chili.

    What to eat/drink

You can get plain non-fat or low-fat yogurt without anything in it, then add Sweet N' Low and, if you want, sugar-free preserves or jelly.
  12. Ktishernamo

    Soft Foods

Yogurt, creamed soups (no potato or corn), cottage cheese, skim milk, baked fish, canned tuna, salmon, crabmeat, boiled shrimp, chicken or turkey as long as it's soft & moist, creamy peanut butter, cheese, eggs, baked or broiled ground beef patty, well cooked veggies...my dr does not "allow" grits, potatoes, or oatmeal due to them being starchy foods. The whole point of this surgery is for us to lose weight and by filling our bodies with starches that's not going to get it. Even though we're having surgery to lose weight doesn't mean we can't put it back on! So my mindset is to just stay away from those foods as much as I can! Good luck!

    Soft Foods

I was told I could eat anything I could run through a blender. The T-bone steak was crunchy and ruined my blender, but a guy's gotta have his steak! Seriously though, I was eating boiled eggs (sometimes in egg salad as well), yogurt, baked potato (just a little), blendered chicken breast, re-fried Beans and salsa, and bananas.

    Nervous about Stage 4

Dont worry about calories at all. Focus on good quality Protein and veggies and you will do fine. I remember starting with a perfectly cooked piece of fish or chicken. You need to make sure it is moist not dry so dont over cook. One of my first meals was a chicken breast cooked just to done, not over. It was super juicy. I liked to use a low sugar spagetti sauce and a sprinkling of cheese. I could maybe eat an ounce or two and i would be stuffed for hours. In the beginning i always would make some sort of low sugar sauce or non fat gravy. But my absolute favorite was fish. My tummy loved it. It took some time for me to be able to eat beef and pork and even now, i can only eat a small amount and it has to be a very tender cut. It was probably 4 months post before i could eat shrimp but now it is one of my favorites. I ate and still eat alot of cottage cheese and greek yogurt. Just take it slowly, chew very well and did i say take it slowly?! LOL. The worst feeling is when you eat to fast and you feel a huge lump in your chest. It can really ruin a meal and that can be caused by eating too fast or not chewing well enough.

    My first fill

ya know I think you should say then f it to the optifast...I mean your liver won't be different with optifast or the cottage cheese/yogurt thing and it worked for me even when I cheated at the last three days....so have yogurt and cottage cheese, you can eat as much as you want..... and then wil find you aren't as hungry. no head rushes/fainting feelings etc.
  17. Thanksgiving day I will progress to pureed foods. I am very excited about that. I am preparing some dishes that I can freeze in 3 oz quntities. Will make it easier during the week whe I go to work. This coming week I only work Monday and will be off the rest of the week. My brother lives in NY while I live in PA. Tuesday I will pack up and stay with his family for the week. I was trying to work on a menu for myself for the week. Well today my sister in law called to tell me she spent a few hours on the net yesterday looking up blogs from sleevers to get ideas of what I will be able to eat. She told me she went shopping and picked up SF pudding, greek yogurt, tuna, canned chicken and is making a pot of fat free refried Beans. She also has squash, carrots, and green beans. She was so excited shopping for this stage of my diet for me. She even picked up SF ice pops. She said, just bring your shakes if you need them and your Vitamins, we are all set here for you! I cant express how much I love her. She is such a caring and wonderful person and my brother made a phenomenal choice in his life partner. This thanksgiving is going to be so exciting because for the first time in forever, i will not stuff myself like the turkey! It will be about family and enjoying company more than anything. My brother then told me when dessert is served, that he will go for a walk with me so the temptation wont pose a problem. I am really blessed. Truly truly blessed. So excited for this next phase!!
  18. Everything is too sweet to me, too. I dilute the RTD shakes 1/2 and 1/2 with water or milk and I usually use twice as much liquid for the powders as what the instructions call for. I even have to dilute non-protein drinks like Lifewater, fruit juice, etc. I can't eat presweetened or flavored yogurt either...way too sweet. I get plain Greek yogurt and flavor it with Torani SF syrups, puréed fruit or protein powder so I can control the sweetness.

    Food questions

Thanks so much for your note!! It's hard being a foodie and having the wrong assumption that I would be forever stuck eating yogurt and scrambled eggs forever. It seems like there is trial and error but that I can lead a normal life and enjoy some of the same things but at a MUCH smaller scale. I am ok with that. At dinner tonight, we split a meal and I told my boyfriend about my decision to talk to a Dr. He told me he loved me no matter what and would support me in any decision. With him for 7 yrs and seeing how amazing he is in tough times and even emergency surgery, I truly believe him. He said it would help him get healthier as well. One hurdle crossed. Next up, my first orientation is Oct 26th and then my first Dr's appt is Nov 3rd. I have been reading SO much and feel so much better after reading personal blogs and tons of posts on here. Congrats and good luck PoodleLover!! I would love to hear more of your journey since you are new into it. Also, LOVE the screen name. We are poodle lovers as well. I have had poodles my whole life and we currently have a 3 yr old little brat, who is the love of our life. She is Cafe Au Lait color with silver ears. Her name is Gypsy. So anyway, fellow poodle lover here too!!

    May 27th, anyone?

Hey everyone. I was banded on May 27th. So far, I have had a good experience. My Dr. required me spend 1 night in the Hospital. Pre-op the Dr. Had me on a two week HMR shake diet. Since surgery I've done well on my liquid diet. Starting to get a little tired of the cream soups. I had a fat free yogurt. It's staying down, so I think I'm doing good. Didn't have alot of pain, except where my port is. I finally got to sleep on my side night before last. So I'm a happy camper right now.

    Am I eating too much?

I eat lousy during the day but I eat a good dinner every night...I have always had trouble eating breakfast..Look and see if you love breakfast and have trouble with other meals.... I meant I can't eat very much..it is like my sleeve closes up and I can only eat 1/2 an egg and 1 slice bacon....if that..Not that I eat the wrong stuff...Most of the time I eat yogurt for breakfast...It sits well for me!

    This might sound stupid

I've lost 10lbs. in about a month by just giving up my waaaaay too calorie-heavy coffee (20 oz. cup each morning with cream and flavor syrup, total of 350 calories), and having a protein shake for breakfast instead of a fast food egg/sausage/cheese sammich on a bagel (which had to have topped 500-600 calories). Lunch is Greek yogurt with a side of cut melon chunks or a dozen almonds to crunch on. Dinner is a light meal and I use protein shakes to fill in as a snack in the afternoon if I need it. I didn't increase exercise or do anything else, and I lost more than 2lbs. per week. I just KNOW you can find a few small changes, like I did, that will add up to the magic 10%--you can do it!
  25. :hugs. I'm sorry it's been rough. I'm not a fan of shakes either. I've only had 2 since my surgery on July 1. Now that I'm on puree, I get most in with foods by relying on baby bel light cheese 6 grams) and WW low fat cheese sticks (7 grams of protein). My breakfast this morning was 2 egg whites and a baby bel omelet for 16 G protein. Yesterday I had a very high protein lunch by having .3 cups chicken taco meat with WW cheese stick melted on it and a dollop of fat free Greek yogurt.
