    October 2018 Sleevers

I would go by what your surgeon recommends but I will say mine didn’t give exact measurements to eat. I’ve watched a lot of videos as you and have seen very small portion recommendations like 1/4 c and would not feel satisfied at all. When I was on the blended soup I was trying to only have 1/2 a c and it wasn’t enough so my nut said to bump up to 1 cup or 1/2 a can and that made the biggest difference. I would ask your nutritionist. I was sleeved on 10/2 so 5 weeks out today and eating soft food for another week. My requirements are 80-100g of protein, 800-1000 calories, 64+oz of water. I am eating about 4oz at a time or about two sunny side up eggs or about a small can of tuna to give you an idea. Tonight I met a family member at Seasons 52 restaurant and could only do 1 meatball and a bite of a 2nd and was full. So weird! I will also add when I moved from soup to real food and calories closer to 1000/day my lbs seem to drop a little quicker. I’m down 35 lbs total (10 lbs week preop liquid) and 25lbs post op.

    Liver shrink diet

I’m supposed to be on a 10 day post op starting yesterday but I keep cheating 🤦🏾‍♀️. 1 Toddler size portion/meal and nothing UNHEALTHY. I was put on a protein shake, Broth, coffee, popsicles pretty much diet. How are u guys staying committed ?
  3. I was Sleeved on 10/29. Been trying each day to get in all my protein and liquids but I have fallen a bit short each day. A;so struggling to get my vitamins in. I am still not feeling hungry but yesterday I just started growing really tired of the same texture of "food". I am a fast food girl, have been since I could get my own money and get to the drive thru. I miss the crunch, the spice, the different textures, the ability to choose something different everyday/every meal. The food commercials are really getting to me and I'm starting to think, "I can't wait until I can have that". I'm afraid that this means failure is right around the corner. I'm starting to regret that I ever did this. I could really use some encouragement and maybe some suggestions on how to work through it. Thanks.

    October 2018 Sleevers

Hi Hrsnjs. I had my sleeve done on 10/16. I’m eating solid foods now and I noticed that I can eat more of certain foods than others. My doctor wants me to get 60-80 g of protein per day. They never said 1/4 of a cup. Today I was able to eat a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese which has 16 g of protein in it. Just make sure you’re getting enough protein and following the serving sizes. I hope that helps!
  6. My doctor set the goal for 135 to 145 for me. I just kept working out and eating and I eventually landed at 116. At the time I was trying to conceive baby number 2 and doctor wanted me to gain 10 to 15 pounds. So, I did. Gained 30 pounds during pregnancy and only lost 10 of those before finding out I am pregnant with baby 3. Doctor thinks I need to stay around 140 to 150 for my body to be "happy". I am 145 now and 17 weeks pregnant so I will definitely gain some more but hope to be back down to 130 or 135 by my birthday next year.

    Bariatric and Alcoholism....

"transference" in an interesting notion, but based on my current experience, I've become convinced that there's a brain chemical explanation for my alcohol increase post-bariatric...... First off, let's acknowledge that heredity has a lot to do with addiction. Some of us are just born wired to fall prey to over drinking. Study: If neither of your parents were alcoholics, you have a 1 in 10 chance of developing alcohol issues. If one parent was an alcoholic, your odds move to 1 in 2, and if both parent were alcoholics, your odds move to 4 in 5. ack!! Guess who drew that last lucky straw! AA calls it being born 'allergic' to alcohol. Second, alcoholism is a scientifically provable brain chemical disorder; not some kind of moral failing or weakness of will-power. Here's a snippet from a great video that really helps explain. Third: There have been studies which link vitamin deficiency with an increase in alcohol abuse. I'm describing this study from memory, but it goes something like this: Back in the 50s, they did a study where they placed rats in a cage with a bowl of water and a bowl of alcohol and then fed them Puppy Chow. About 10% of the rats turned into alcoholics, which is in line with the general US population. Next they re-ran the experiment with a new set of rats, except this time, they extracted all the vitamin nutrients out of the food. About %85 of the rats turned into alcoholics. Finally, the re-ran a third time, but with Puppy Chow mega fortified with vitamins, specifically B and C. None of the rats turned to the alcohol. When I read this study - true or not - I was inspired. It made a connection in my head. What is one of the major issues facing post-bariatric patients? Vitamin deficiency. And who hasn't been a very good boy about taking his bariatric vitamins for the last two years.... the exact time frame where my drinking went from the occasional bender, to daily drinking? Me!! So two weeks ago I started getting really serious about my vitamin intake, including getting B-12 injections every two days. Wow! what a difference! My craving went from a scream to a whisper. This last 12 days of sobriety has been a piece of cake compared to all my other attempts (none of which lasted more than seven days before giving in to the cravings). Your milage may vary, but if you are struggling with managing your alcohol cravings, give b12 injections a try. Hopefully it makes the same difference as I've experienced the last two weeks (knock on wood) I'll keep this post updated and honest.

    Lapband Replacement

The people I know that have had a second or third band have never managed to achieve the same level of success they did when they first got banded. Potentially you may have lots of scar tissue and adhesions. At some point in your future this band is probably going to stop working or cause issues that require a revision. Why put yourself through that, especially because as Matt says bands are being phased out as they have been proven over time not to be the successful tool that they were initially thought to be. I would be considering my options and looking at something that hopefully won't need another revision 5 or 10 years down the line

  10. Dear Newbie, I'm not a vet--only going on 10months post op RNY. But here is the #1 rule of WLS, like think of it as the eleventh commandment. ELEVENTH COMMANDMENT OF WLS - If you want all to go well in your world, you will learn to pound drink water like nobody's beeswax. Whahhhh???? You don't like water? Then you probably should choose a different road to Thinville. Seriously. Learn to drink BEFORE your surgery. Practice sipping from a 1oz jigger, every 15 minutes...then every 10 minutes...then every 5 minutes, until you can drink up to 4oz of water every 15-20 minutes. And btw? I mean WATER. Learn to tolerate it now without a crapton of MIO or whatever the fork you think you need to add to it. Use a slice of citrus, let some strawberries sit in the water, or a slice of orange. But drink it without man-made whackadoodle sweet crap. Why? Cuz after surgery, your life WILL depend on it--more than ever. And best part? If you stay VERY well hydrated, then you poop better, your nausea rate goes down, it's easier to eat, you heal better, you make better/rational decisions, and you can TCB (take care of bidness), but best of all--you mobilize and move out fat stored in your fat cells. Signed Sincerely, The Water Board
  11. Thanks. Dealing with a lot personally too. If anyone of you want to see what a post looks like when I'm pissed... go read that last one I posted to that thread, that was me like shaking mad. In this day and age, to tell someone they don't understand something because they are one gender or another (or one sex or another, your pick) just really set me off. I'm never anything but honest and factual. I go out of my way to be helpful and understanding. That post... concerns me more than anything because this woman is using her 4 kids as the reason she won't go to the ER because she's unable to consume water... yet, me alerting her to the fact that, she could die if she doesn't... is me being harsh. I can't wait to see someone twist my last post into some "mansplaining" bs. I'm dealing with a bout of shingles w/o a rash. So I've got no treatment options other than dealing with the pain, can't take any NSAIDs or pain meds that actually work thanks to the bypass... I still am greatful for the bypass, but this kinda sucks. I'm not going to make 200 before my 20th anniversary or birthday, and that is depressing, even if I fully understand that it's just some arbitrary goal that does nothing to negate my progress, it still sucks. Haven't been sleeping well because of the pain... BUT I am back to the gym most days now... working towards being able to climb a mountain. Need to be able to climb 500 flights of stairs carrying about 30 lbs of gear. The actual climb is going to be about 5000 feet in 5 miles. 10 miles round trip, 5000 feet up, 5000 feet back down.

    Orange Theory?

OTF! OTF! OTF! OTF! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! I joined OTF when I was pre-op to lose the qualifying weight. Post-op, when I was cleared for exercise, I kept it up. Two years later and OTF is basically the only exercise I do. I start my week "owing" 3 classes. Most weeks it 4 and if I can squeeze it in I do 5. Hour long, coached classes that utilize treadmills, rowers, with free and body weight exercises. The "gimmick" is that everyone wears a HRM and you see what "zone" you are in throughout the class. The goal is to be in the "Orange Zone" (84% of your max heart rate) for at least 12 minutes cumulatively (called splat points). For treadmill work everything is broken into paces for example Power Walker (incline), Jogger, Runner (speed) and the coaches guide you through that. Now before you say "Oh I don't want everyone seeing my heart rate" let me say this, no one cares. I'm in 3-4 classes a week and I'm only looking a 1 number...mine. At the end of the class you see total # of calories burned, and splats (its also emailed to you) For me, it works perfect. Classes are about an hour long, you are coached through everything but can work at your own pace. I need a defined time, with someone saying "ok do that, ok stop doing that, now do this". Then she I'm done, I'm done. I started pre-op as a power walker maxing out at 3.9 mph and (at my starting weight) I'd burn 1000+ calories in an hour class. Now, 2 years in, I'm a runner most days and I can ALL-OUT at 10+ mph and I still burn between 650-850 cals per class. Lastly, they are EVERYWHERE. I travel a lot for work and I can still get workouts almost anywhere in the US. Every studio uses the same template. They all feel the same, the only difference is the coaches. Without context I know some of this is gibberish, but I can't say enough about how much I love OTF, I highly recommend it.

Could you get out of it? I know I'm not cleared to lift 10 pounds until my 1 month post-op appointment. That's enough reason not to be in charge of the turkey, right there. (You don't have to tell them what surgery you had, to say "I had surgery, and I am not up to this.") As family, they should understand. And what I mean by "get out of it" is flexible. Maybe you supplement the things you are willing to cook/can eat with some premade sides and a small turkey breast instead of the whole bird, but you still host. Maybe you don't host at all, and someone else needs to take up the slack, this one year. But I'd encourage you to find some solution along that spectrum that you can live with, rather than try to do the whole thing yourself and (entirely reasonably) resent it. My spouse and I are doing Thanksgiving on our own, and since neither of is is a big eater anymore, we'll either just eat normal food, or we'll mark the occasion with something really special like crab legs, which we almost never eat but both enjoy. I'm also going to make high-protein pumpkin custards (like pumpkin pie with some extra protein and no crust).
  14. Major complications are extremely rare. Reversals are also extremely rare. The rate of severe complications has dropped drastically in the past 10-15 years as newer medical technologies have come into play. Don't let someone's issue sway your decision. Being overweight typically has more complications than the surgery does.

Baby fat is far more than cute

Well if you're referring to that stinky profile, it's almost all wrong. AND my true facts Starting to seek August 15th 2015, that's when I first met Surgeon #1, the back- stabbing fool that let me go through his program not, once but, twice and then refused me surgery. The second time I returned to HIM , I count as my,Highest weight of 355. Leeft him after he repudiated me and my,efforts,in February 2018, cried, raged and signed into right facility's program March 9th 2018, had my presurgical exam with Dr Needleman 7/17/2018 at 334, went on all-August livershrinking diet, surgery 9/05/2018 at 319, am losing 3-5 pounds weekly, most of time, never stalled because of stricture running my recovery, yesterday morning, after converting back from metric 278.9 pounds. Any,other surgery dates are so erroneous it stinks. Why do I not repair them? Because,i am working off of Android Marshmallow app not computer, every change slides away like eggs on teflon, the profile returns nothing. FYI I have had 2 post- surgery endoscopies and facing another, 10/1218,10/26/18 and 11/09/18. and nothing has worked yet, after 3 failed attempts do they do "open" or am I doing this in perpetuity every 2 weeks? Je Ne Sais, French for IT,Iand of course they are all EGJ because a Bypassers. duodenum no longer visible, only Jejunem. That is a certanity!
  16. "Humans are the fattest species on record at birth. A baby human is born with about 15 percent body fat—a higher percentage than any other species in the world. Only a small number of other mammals make it into the double digits at birth: about 11 percent for guinea pigs and around 10 percent for harp seals, for example. Even our nearest primate relatives are not born as fat as we are." http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/crux/2018/01/12/baby-fat-cute/?utm_source=dsctwitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=dsctwitter#.W-G0wxRhPzI

    How to decide?

Getting enough calories isn't going to be a problem. If anything, it's making sure you don't over do it that's an issue. As far as your reason for this post, how do you chose, that's going to be purely personal. Both the Sleeve and the Bypass have similar loss, success rates, and how long you keep the weight off, with the Bypass beating out the Sleeve on all accounts by a small %. The Sleeve has a habit of creating or making any GERD and Acid Reflux issues worse, whereas the Bypass resolves GERD and Acid Reflux issues. The sleeve is not reversible and contrary to popular belief, the bypass actually *IS* reversible. Granted, bypass reversal is rare as it's a complicated and risky surgery, but it is an option and reversals do happen (we had a member here go through a reversal sometime this year). Please don't listen to those giving you advice that don't have any experience with these surgeries, 9 times out of 10, the information they give you is more hearsay, myth and false information than it is fact. Good luck!

Why? Those 5 companies are part of HEALTH CARE SERVICE CORPORATION (HCSC) and they are making a major change which affects anyone insured by them in 2019 who is considering having bariatric surgery. The HCSC Bariatric Surgery Medical Policy no. SURG716.003 is going to become effective February 1, 2019 and, believe it or not, they are eliminating any formal requirement that patients engage in supervised weight loss for a particular time frame (e.g. 3, 6, 12 months, etc.) prior to surgery.
