    New Years

I was just thinking about this. My resolutions year after year have been to lose weight, get healthy, etc. This year I decided not to make a resolution and stick to what I'm doing! I had RNY on 9/22, down 53 pounds, exercising six days a week and feeling great. I have 47 pounds to goal, and am filled with hope and optimism! Do what works for you, and may all our healthful dreams come true! ❤️????
  2. I had a fill on Friday, first time in almost a year. The last time I had a fill it caused acid relux so I went back a week later and he took it out. Intstant relief. This time, I got the same .5cc fill again and I have had a sore throat ever since. I don't have the night time gurgling, it is just constant feeling in the throat. I am thinking this is also a sign of acid reflux and maybe I need an unfill again? No problems eating, but refuse to live with this annoying feeling. Advice is appreciated!!

Excellent link re: what to expect

Thank you. As a new vsg person only 3 weeks post op, this information is very helpful.
  4. I'm with you!!! Also Sleeved 11/28 and in a stall, so frustrating! This past week I only lost 1 lb. Annoying when you're eating such minimal calories. I've only lost 12 since surgery but 27 total since starting my liquid diet 2 weeks pre-op. Just gonna keep on going! I've been hitting my protein, so not sure what's up.

Week 5 Update - November Sleeves.

I am so happy for you on your progress! Sounds like you are on a great road toward your goals. I had sleeve surgery on November 29th and lost 15 pounds in first week and none since then. I've been at a stall for over a week!

    Seeking a surgeon

Hi Shutterbug - I am also seeking Dr. Pleatman for my vSG - my bmi is a bit on the low side (32-33) so I am a self pay... Wanted to ask you if Dr. Pleatman conducted a leak test. His YouTube video only tested the stomach specimen which was removed - not the sleeve remaining in the body. I assume his theory is that if the staples are tight on the disposed stomach - the remaining should be fine - but..gees, who know if a staple didn't catch properly, etc. Why wait for a fever or rapid heartbeat to develop. I am flying in from New England - and couldn't stay in MI for 6 weeks for a wait-and-see period. Can you extend on any advice on your experience regarding leak tests, and his overall treatment of your VSG? Thank you in advance - your advice is greatly appreciated. Ann
  7. Hi, I see these posts are from a few months ago so I'm curious how everyone is doing, especially the Dr. Geiss patient(s). I have surgery scheduled with Dr. Geiss in 3 weeks and am looking forward to it. I'm hoping I'll be having the single incision-option -- if a shorter torso is the determining factor I'm a 5'2" female so it looks like maybe -- although I suppose like another patient was saying if you didn't want to say what the typical laproscopic scars were from you could say they were from gallbladder surgery... or something Hope everyone is doing well!

    Is this normal?

UGH... and I had the EXACT symptoms you do. Mine felt like an overall tightness/soreness /extreme discomfort - like when I took a deep breath, or was sitting/laying in a certain position, bending over, etc. I basically felt it all the time. I discussed with my doctor and he said it's most likely a combination of trapped gas and constipation. I was banded on 11/10 and had a hell of a time (excuse my language) going #2. I had HORRIBLE constipation. I've since taken colace and have had a MUCH better time. High Protein diets are synonymous with constipation, so it’s very important that we drink as much Water as possible. I was 3 weeks post-op yesterday and can still feel it, just not as bad. It’s DEFINITELY gotten SO much better though. I too was very concerned for a while. My port is the lower right side of my stomach closer to my belly button as opposed to under your left rib cage. So for me, this particular ailment wasn’t port pain (though I DO have some port pain, just not there lol). Also, I know that some sleeve/bypass patients have experienced the same pain/discomfort… so I don’t think this symptom is exclusive to banded patients. My doctor also suggested that it may be something called "splenic flexure syndrome." Essentially, gas gets trapped in the bend of the colon near the spleen (the splenic flexure). It’s more or less just gas pains that will eventually dissipate. This may sound crazy… but I found that flapping my arms, like I’m doing the chicken dance helped. I know it sounds weird, but it actually helped alleviate my discomfort/pain But overall, if the discomfort if not manageable and is not getting better at all, I would certainly call your doctor. There’s no reason for you to be uncomfortable and in pain.
  9. Hi there. I am 2.5 weeks out and today I feel like I am coming down with a cold. Tonight I have been coughing a lot. What cold medicines can I take? My go to's pre surgery were mucinex and day quill/ nyquill. I really don't need this. I just started a new job and have lots of training to go to in the coming weeks. I can't be taking off to go to the doctor!!! I usually never get sick in the summer so I wonder if the sleeve is compromising my health already...boo. I have been good with taking my vitamins...

    Energy Level

What you are describing sounds within the realm of normal to me. It's pretty common to have low energy after any surgery, but when you factor in the sudden drop in calories, it's no wonder. I was exhausted all the time for the first 6 weeks, (in the early days, I had to rest after a shower, and I remember a day or two I was so weak it was work holding my head up) but it was steadily improving after the first 4 weeks. Just keep doing what you are doing, and it will get better!

    Energy Level

My problem now s I am so tired. No energy. I am sleeping ok but can't seem to keep up with my schedule. Anyone else have low energy?

Anyone Still Doing Atkins Ir Southbeach??!!

I use the under lined principles of low carb/ high Protein and have had what I consider a good result. I try to keep carbs at around 35-40. I eat mostly lean Proteins ( at least 70g), followed by low cab veggies with the ocassional fruit. I keep calories to about 900. And while I do try to keep moving, I realy don't push it. about a 30 min walk or eliptical daily at a leisurely pace. (If I exercise too much more, I have found my appeite increases substanially and I want to eat more....probably more than I burn.---I do allow myself a few days each month to increase my carbs and calories. One, this lets my eat those carbs that I might be missing like fruit, english muffin, oatmeal..., but I also think it confuses my body and keeps it from getting to comfortable. I have lost 42 pounds in 17 weeks,,,thats about an average of2.5 pounds a week. But the biggest difference is the way I feel!! Wow what a difference!! My energy level is 3 times what it used to be. Now that I am under 195 pounds....I have noticed a slight decline in the weight loss department. Maybe more like a 1-1.5 pound loss weekly, so its my plan (starting next week) to shake things up. Start adding a few more calories and bumoing up the exercise a little....I might also lower my carbs to nothing for a couple of days in hopes of entering ketosis. Hopefully this will get the scale back up there to the 2 pound a week mark again. If this is something you decide to try, I love exchanging low carb food ideas and recipes.---just let me know.

    Sore Throat After Fill...

Have you thought about taking something like Prilosec OTC? It is a Protein pump inhibitor and will reduce the amount of acid your stomach makes. If you're able to eat fine otherwise I suggest trying this for two weeks (ideally 2-3 months). It will help retrain your stomach a bit so it doesn't produce so much acid. If the reflux comes back after you stop, then you may need to find out if you have an ulcer or another issue. It could also be the food you're eating. Monitor when it occurs and what you ate in the hours prior. I hope that helps.
  15. I'm 4 weeks out and getting close to 60 on the Protein most days but I'm struggling with the liquids. I know I'm at least a little dehydrated but I swear I feel like I'm drinking all day long every day. I don't have any problems with how much I swallow at a time but it's just the constant remembering to drink. And, if I drink too big of a gulp, I feel a pain kind of thing around the stomach for just a minute or less. Focus on drinking every minute you aren't having a shake or something with some calories. You'll get to where you can drink more but you really want to be sure you're getting as much as you can right now.

    Pre Op high protein diet

My pre op diet was keto so high protein too but also high fat which I struggled with. No calorie limit though. Why are you focussing on mushy food? After surgery you only eat purées & then soft foods for about 4 weeks & believe me that’s too long! Ensuring you meet your protein goals will be life long thing so I say enjoy any & all proteins in all forms. The protein snacks I go to are cheese, high protein yoghurt, hummus, liverwurst or pate (with crudités or a couple of multi grain crackers), protein bar (be careful some have a lot of sugar or artificial sugars). Occasionally I’ll have nuts or roasted fava beans or chick peas. You can also nibble on some meat like some chicken (watch deli meats that are cured or fatty like ham, salamis, etc.) or a boiled egg. Hope you get a surgery date soon.
  19. I have had some issues going on the last couple of days, and I am just not sure what's going on. It started yesterday with what I am assuming was really bad gas pains. Never had gas pains before, so not really sure, but it was really sharp pains, that kind of went away after taking Gas-x, and burping. So after the gas pains kind of went away I still felt tightness, and pain in the area of my band. Actually I wouldn't really call it pain, but more discomfort. I can eat and drink just fine, but still have some feelings of tightness around the band today. I don't know if it's gas, or if my band has slipped, or if I am too tight or what. I just had a fill last week, but everything was fine until yesterday. Any ideas on what could be going on?
  20. I attended my last pre-op MD visit and pre op visit today which included a class on the pre and post op diet. I was expecting something way tougher based on my reading here. What I received was: PreOp: Starting 2 weeks prior to surgery date, daily diet is: -3x Nectar or Unjury protein shake -1/2 cup oatmeal or cream of wheat -1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce -1 cup of vegetables -1/2 cup of light n fit or carb master yogurt -1 cup of low fat soup This is not an "or" list, but rather I'm supposed to eat everything on that list daily on the 2 week pre op diet. -1 day prior to surgery = clear liquids only. Curious as to why different surgeons have such drastically different requirements for the pre op diet? Also of note, for post op, they only have you on clear liquids for the first 2 days, then full liquids and purees from day 3-20, soft foods (meaning can be cut with a fork) from week 3-6, then all normal food after 6 weeks with the exception of bread/rice/pasta, which cannot have until 12 weeks.

Really hard time adjusting to life with the band?

I was having a really hard time for a couple weeks after I got the band. I was losing like crazy immediately after the surgery but ywo weeks after my post op my weight loss started to trickle off. I am happy to say I have not gained anything, but a I haven't lost anything additional either. I'm having some troubles with my doctor, I really need a fill so I can get started and they never call back. I was banded 6/30/08 and my first fill wont be until probably 10/14/08. My main problem right now is that I can still eat the way I did b4 I got banded, I don't allow myself to, but its scary! Since I don't have any restriction yet, I have taken to just plain old starving myself and taking these organic appetite supressants so I won't let the food get the best of me! But it was quite a shock to my life

    Treadmill Workouts

I do treadmill - I started out doing a 20 minute mile - now am up to a 16 minute mile and punch it up to 4.0 for a couple of song - (IPod) started out doing only a mile - but now am up to 3 miles a day - in 47 - 51 minutes 4 or 5 times a week I go to the gym and listen to my music and people watch - and when a good song comes on - punch it - slow song I decrease the speed but increase the incline - but keep it ususllay at mini level one. If you have your treadmill at home you can by dvd's that has you walking throught the country side or italy etc..

    Treadmill Workouts

I bought a NordicTrack treadmill and it uses the IFit cards. I love the treadmill and the exercise programs that are on the card. There is a different program everyday with new challenges. I use the treadmill 3 times a week and am starting to see a big difference in my body

    Treadmill Workouts

I,m kinda new on mine also, but I use 30min. as my allotted time on it 4 or 5 days a week. Right now I,m at 4 for 28 min and then kick it up to 7 for the last 2 min. I know I said 30 min. but I forgot that I do a cool down for 3 min at 3. I might be tired and used up right after getting off of it,but it sure seems like it gives more energy than if I don,t use it. Just my 2cents worth.

    Treadmill Workouts

We just had a new treadmaill delivered Monday. It is still in the box blocking our hallway. It is HUGE. We will assemble(said it took two steps) it before the weekend because seince it is so much larger than we expected, it is going into another room. It was bought from HSN, free shipping. It has a SD card and designed workouts built into that card. I'll let you know how it goes. There is an 8 week weightloss program on the card. :frown:
