    July sleevers?

I just had my appointment with my surgeon yesterday for a revision from a band. He scheduled me for July 13! I'm super excited, but a little nervous I'm in over my head because I have two little girls and my husband is gone for the summer.
  2. Great news! If you have Presbyterian Insurance and live close to the Albuquerque area, we no longer have to go to El Paso Texas for bariatric surgery. Presbyterian now has a brand new startup local Bariatric program affiliated with Presbyterian Rust Hospital in Rio Rancho. Del Sol is still contracted with Presbyterian insurance and you can still use their bariatric program there, but, if you live closer it may be worth looking into. Dr. William Van Rice is the bariatric doctor for their program. I had lap band to sleeve revision surgery and can only give Dr. Van Rice the highest of recommendation. Jake

    Goal?

I'm 5'8" and my nutritionist told me 140. I laughed at her. So we revised it to 170 but my personal goal is 155. But truthfully anything under 200 and I'm happy. I don't ever remember a 1 in front of my weight.
  4. Question.,,, it seems that a lot of people that are on here seem to have had some real problems with the band... As many have revisions If you eat well and take care of yourself you can lose a lot of weight right? You shouldn't reach a plateau? My surgeon thinks the band is great yet complications happen when you push the boundaries with your band how long does it take to realise the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger? Having a band do you need to take any additional multi Vitamins? I'm scared I won't no how to control myself with portions and eating the right foods don't want to make myself ill.

    Banded in 2009

Update: revision approved! I'm revising to RNY Surgery is on July 20! Any advice from others who have gone through the process?

    Lap band conversion to ?

@@hubbark1, I have lost 34lbs since May 20th and am ahead of my goal at this point according to my team. They did tell me that revision patients do tend to lose slower but that has not been my experience. I have slowed down some int he last week but I was told that was to be expected. It really is the best decision I have made for my health. The band worked for a while and then it did not. It slipped, I was gaining weight and having bad reflux. Glad it is gone!
  7. I didn't read all the replies yet and am short on time... so I don't mean to be terse, just want to share perspective. I was high BMI - 52 to start. I am post menopausal and was a failed lapband patient. Somehow, I managed to get to goal with the sleeve. I am 3.5 years out now and I can ASSURE YOU that if I had not gotten to goal in that first 18 month window, I would not have made it. My advice, look into revision to the DS, or the new modified (less side effects) DS. That is what I would do. While I realize we are all in this together, I think that people with higher BMIs have extra challenges. Essentially the disease process of obesity is much further advanced and much harder to "put in remission"
  8. I am currently leaning to Dr. Louisiana Valenalzuela because I found her at Mexico Bariatric center she seems to be very qualified and will only do 3 surgeries a day. Also I asked the Facilitator if they were referring a family member who would they choose amd he said DR, V without question. I haven't found any negative about her, so that's where I am at. I am going to have a revision from sleeve to bypass done in August, and am also going with Dr. Valenalzuela. Have you decided that is who you are using? When are you going down for your surgery?
  9. I think the reason for this is the band, to be honest. from talking to my surgeon, the month before my surgery, he took out 17 bands and put in only one. Each of those removals would count as a revision I think. That makes sense. I was wondering if it was because the sleeve revisions increased.

    Any August Sleevers?

We are a day apart doing the revision!
  11. It is common for people with lap bands to have a revision to RNY gastric bypass surgery. One of the individual in our support group went through this process when his band started to cut into his stomach. After surgery he was very happy with the results.
  12. I hit the infamous week 3 stall which lasted 3 weeks! I am losing again but slowly! I was a band revision to sleeve and that apparently makes weightloss even slower. I am concentrating on protein and water and letting it happen. Excercise needs to happen for me...rain has left me feeling unmotivated. Keep on the course!!

    Any August Sleevers?

Hi I'm having a band to sleeve revision August 17th
  14. It's interesting to see that so many people were able to have the revision in one surgery. I had a second opinion with another popular surgeon and he too wouldn't do it in one. I'm jealous! Oh well, this is just part of my story and I'll get there soon enough! Thanks all, for your very helpful comments. ????????????

    Barret's and the sleeve

I developed Gerd with my sleeve and luckily have not yet damaged my esophagus. I am being revised to the bypass. I hope it is a solution. Have u always had Gerd? Or was it the silent type? Or Barrett's minus the Gerd?
  16. Is the gastric bypass still most popular? How’s the sleeve doing as it’s no longer quite so new? Are you a die-hard band fan? Are you interested in knowing which types of weight loss surgery are most popular? Of course you are! And I have the latest information from the U.S.! I got these numbers through ASMBS (American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery). Here are the highlights… In 2014, there were 193,000 total weight loss surgeries. Of these: 26.8% were Gastric Bypass. 9.5% were Gastric Band. 51.7% were GastricSleeve. 11.5% were Revisions. And less than 1% were other (including BPD-DS). Compare that to 2011, when there were 158,000 total surgeries. Of these: 36.7% were Gastric Bypass. 35.4% were Gastric Band. 17.8% were Gastric Sleeve. 6% were Revisions. 3.2% were Other. And 0.9% were BPD-DS. Sleeve is up! Band is down! What do you think? How did you make your choice? Are you having second thoughts as you try to decide? If you already had surgery, do you wish you knew then what you know now?

    Barret's and the sleeve

If you have your heart set on the sleeve and your surgeon will do a sleeve with your diagnosis of Barret's you must also see if your insurance would allow for a sleeve to bypass revision in case reflux gets to bad. Most insurances will only cover 1 procedure per lifetime check the fine print. My surgeon wouldn't do a sleeve on me because of my diagnosis of Barret's so I had the bypass on the 15th of June. Hope this helps. Best of Luck.
  18. I have Cigna. I knew the "revision" surgery I wanted was covered but when the paperwork was submitted it was denied. I called and found out that the denial was only because they wanted it done at a different hospital so we re- submitted the paperwork. It was approved immediately and my surgery was 5 months ago. Good luck
  19. I had the revision in 1 surgery and the recovery was very easy. Yes the weight loss is slower. I do have acid reflux at night but I can take an over the counter acid reducer and I'm fine. If I eat that 1 bite too much, I get nauseous. The sleeve helps you feel full not stuck like the band I'm happy just to have that thing out of me. Good luck to you.

1.5 years out, only 40% loss, Devastated

I was definitely a slower loser. I stalled out at about 9 months post op. At that point I lost 10lbs preop diet and 43lbs post op. I got pregnant 11 months post op. I followed my plan according to my dr and Nut. I logged on MFP and worked out so much I developed plantar fasciitis. I did not drink sodas or through a straw LMAO... (That's a big question around here). To say it was not frustrating would not be true. Some people make it to goal in 9-10 months post op. I was not close. My starting weight was 267lbs. Obviously seeing the numbers go down is a huge incentive and my NUT measured me at every appt. After I had my baby I noticed it was even harder to get the weight off, my appetite increased, and I was having extreme heartburn. I consulted with a new bariatric dr and he sent me for Barium Swallow. It was determined I had large hiatal hernia and confirmed Gerd. I did not have that preop. So then he sent me for EDG. There is was determined my sleeve was twisted (not sure why this wasn't seen on barium test) and that my food is backing up... Anyways the dr feels that the sleeve is not functioning properly, as I was in compliance (as document through my post op nutrition appts) and that I will benefit from a revision. He said he could resleeve me, although it is hard to determine if the gerd is from the hernia or the shape of my sleeve. I am also am a bit gun shy of sleeve at this point because I do not feel like it worked for ME. In my heart even without my pregnancy I do not believe I would have met my goal. I didn't have a honeymoon phase. Of course the 1st month was huge but after that I averaged a pound a week. I felt like OMG I had surgery for that? So I totally get where you are coming from.

    Lap band conversion to ?

@@Ligaleagle86 how has your weight loss been? I have heard that most revision people loose weight slower than if they would have gone right into bypass. I only lost about 5 pounds a month with the band. I too had horrible reflux. The kind that would wake you up at night gagging. I HATE this band and cannot wait to remove it. At the same time I am scared that the bypass won't work either.

    My biggest fear with VSG

Personally I think it is worth it because if you don't lose the 40 lbs where will you be? and if you do you are 40 lbs healthier. When you lose those first lbs it sets you up for success, you feel better, look better, want to do more for yourself. And it just might help you to lose the rest anyway, get you in the right frame of mind and with a smaller stomach that helps you to eat less. I also think with the pre surgery diet and the post surgery restrictions you get started with healthier eating and smaller amounts and it is easier to continue because you want to continue the success. I am revising from a lap band that I had great success with, if you don't consider that I was basically throwing up everything I ate all the time, and then it slipped and had to be removed. I get my sleeve a week from tomorrow. Can't wait. I was where you are and I have logged every excuse in the book. I ate everything after my band was removed and gained a good 50lbs in 2 months. Now on pre surgery diet and losing again so I feel much better. I wish you luck in whatever decision you make. I have anxiety too but that should not keep them from giving you surgery.

    Had my surgery today!

Looking forward to hearing how u all do. I'm getting my band removed and revised to gastric just waiting on insurance.
  24. Looking for support and knowledge. I had my band placed in September 2012 first half went great down 100 lbs and so much energy ! My friends thought I started drugs! Super happy right!?! Then I got my band to tight and it's been down hill since. Finally after a year and a half of absolutely no energy and terrible heartburn, even while taking omeprozole, I finally convinced them to do the scope. Well now I have Barrett's esophagus that my band has caused and a high risk of it developing into cancer. Devastated at this point but optimistic that the revision surgery will go great and I can get back to life. Waiting for insurance approval and a surgery date! Looking forward to being in this group for much needed support! My family lost someone close to me hem who had gastric so they are not supportive of my decision to want to be healthy and run someday!
  25. Good morning: I need some help! I had my surgery 8/24/2011; I lost a total of 112 pounds. I have since gained 45 pounds back in the last 1 1/2. I have been exercising, reduced my carb intake to zero, increased Water, no caffeine, eating salads, increased my Protein to 70 grams a day. Drinking 64+ oz of water. And I can not lose any weight. I am so frustrated & disappointed. Please any suggestions. I would greatly appreciate it. I went back to Kaiser for the revision surgery & the only option they gave me was to have the gastric by pass. Which I do not want to do. Please someone give me some advice. Thank you so much!
